I initially ordered the blackened red snapper, recommend by the waitress, it was the absolute worst fish I've tasted in years. It taste like "fish" if you know what I mean. The restaurant that looks like a boat! Upon arrival we were greeted by multiple staff members standing by the host stand. It was a pleasant welcome. They gave us the option of an outside patio or dine in. We opted to sit at the bar. The atmosphere had a relaxed feeling with walls and decor relating to fisherman and the ocean. Once we found our bar seats at the bow of the boat we were immediately greeted by the bartender. Water no ice for me but most guest were enjoying cold beer served michelada style (hot sauce and seasonings, or bloody Mary mix at a lot of places). We ordered the seafood gumbo which was tasty but had shrimp shells inside. Then the entree followed which was a grilled skewer of shrimp and scallops. The rice and coleslaw were my favorites. The protein was over cooked for my liking giving it a rubbery texture. Once we left the staff at the door opened it for us and thanked us for our business which was nice. Price point was fair. She offered us the special which we split - it was 2 stuffed shrimp, 6 fried shrimp with fries and 6 grilled shrimp with rice. The crawfish fingers were small and dried up and only came with like 10 pieces the baked oysters were also dried up and soo small and burnt!! OK, so it's the beginning of my spring cleanse and I was also in the mood for oysters, so I decided to hit up Capt. Benny's on Hwy 290. Short version: a very quaint locale with a lot of Hispanic customers and pretty decent oysters, but be armed with patience and a good bottle of hot sauce. Long version: I was craving oysters and the billboard outside Capt. Benny's on 290 advertised a dozen for only $11.99. SOLD! The sign inside says "Seat Yourself" so I did. I went to the oyster bar and asked for a menu and a water to start with. Here's where things go a little loco. I had no idea who my server was! One girl asks me for a drink order, then she disappears after delivering my water and I never see her again. Then a Hispanic guy behind the oyster bar asks me for my order. Uh, who dis be? So I order a dozen on the half shell. If there's one thing I don't like, it's not knowing who your server is. ZAP - one star gone. Now, the one good thing about this place - hence the 3 stars - are the oysters. Not only were they freshly shucked and fat, but also delivered with a ton of lemon and lime wedges. Pic attached as proof. The oysters were OK but could have been a little saltier. Given the fact that they were so fat, I would guess that their oyster supplier probably didn't let them mature in salt water. Let me explain: You see, in Southeast Texas and all across southern Louisiana, oyster beds are usually started in freshwater so that the oysters can grow quicker. Then, about a month or two before being harvested, they are transplanted into salt water so they can absorb the sodium and make for a delicious bivalve. Not these oysters. They were too flabby and sweet, which necessitated a good douse of Tabasco and lots of lemons. In this instance, size didn't mean anything to me. (Yes, I know what I said, bitches!) Anyway, the oysters were the high point of the lunch. I ordered the po' boy and gumbo lunch, which is a steal at $9.99. I decided on an oyster loaf with the gumbo. The gumbo was served piping hot, which was great. However, it was probably the blandest I've ever eaten. On top of that, it was not served separately from the rice, which is how gumbo should be eaten. Plus, it too needed a lot of Tabasco to pick it up. This experience is rare for me - I've had gumbo from Danton's and Jax Grill, both of which were infinitely better. Heck, even the Pappas people know how to make gumbo - and you already know how I feel about them. Bottom line - If a seafood restaurant can't make a decent gumbo in Texas, then it's a badge of shame to be worn. ZAP - second star gone. The oyster loaf was good. The oysters - 4 or 5 in all - were breaded in cornmeal and quick-fried, then served on a dressed bun like they do in New Orleans. Not bad! The french fries were crispy and not greasy at all. Again, pics are attached. You decide for yourself. What really bothered me was the whole "barrio" atmosphere here. As some of the previous Yelpers have noted, service is either hit or miss. And on top of that, you could tell who the regulars were from the way the bar staff was treating them. Other posters are correct - this is a place where being a gringo is not exactly kosher. When you've got vatos here drinking micheladas and yelling "en espanol" across the room, it's not exactly a pleasant dining experience. Hey, it could have been worse - I could have been wearing a MAGA hat. But I digress. So - will I return? For the oysters, maybe. For the po' boy, maybe. I used to call this place "The Boat" when I was growing up, as I'm sure many other people do. It has a cool looking bar, many tables, and some sports on TV. Even outside seating is available. There used to be a nice fountain for decor, but they have since removed it. Parking is pretty easy considering the restaurant is right on the frontage road of 290. The easy access into the patio is also a plus. To start they have several drinks like beer, soda, and other liquor upon request. The menu is pretty thorough, but be prepared to spend a pretty penny for some items. I had the dozen oysters on the half shell. They're market price so depending on the time of year, they can be really cheap or high. They really taste better with Tabasco sauce, and for the month of June, these weren't bad at all. I also shared the fried alligator with my dining companion. I wasn't a huge fan as it could've been a little less overcooked. But everything else looks good to eat; they have a nice looking shrimp dish with fried oysters I may try next time. Come and have some good seafood and watch a game on TV if you have an hour or two to kill. I've loved this place since I was a little kid. read more

It's probably been 9 years since I have eaten here. Last weekend I finally got back by to give it another go. It seems the interior is different from what I had remembered. It has both indoor and outdoor seating. I liked the setup here. After being seated and looking at the menu I ordered the fish and shrimp dinner that come with French fries and cole slaw and hush puppies. The food arrived about 10 minutes later ( see pic). I liked it! Great setting for the locals it seems. I sat at the "boat" also known as the bar and it appeared the bartender knew most everyone that sat down. It wasn't overly crowded on this Wednesday night and I was fortunate to have Reyes as the tender of the bar who was doing anything and everything to ensure everyone was taken care of, taking orders, serving up the food and shucking oysters like a pro. I've eaten take out at another Captain Benny's location and found this one to be close to my hotel so I thought I'd see if the first time I enjoyed food from Captain Benny's was a fluke or the real deal. My conclusion is yep it's pretty awesome for what it is which is a very causal come as you are type of place that serves ice cold beer and simply prepared fresh seafood. There were several types of oyster offered tonight cold, fresh and clean. The jalapeño boudin app was excellent very spicy and great with a cold locally brewed beer. The shrimp diablos was a treat nice medium shrimp warped in bacon and stuffed with a slice of jalapeño then fried try that at your next party. I also had a sampling of the fried shrimp and fried catfish it was awesome as well, fried up Louisiana style and cooked to perfection. I am glad I found this place cause it will definitely be a place I frequent when I'm in town and just want to relax and have a beer and some excellent tapas regardless of what they call them.
