My husband and I drove over 45 minutes to dine in. As soon as we walked in, no one came to greet us. I walked towards an empty table. There were several empty tables. My other friend ordered An old-fashioned and she said, it tasted pretty good. I ordered the catfish and grits, 10 out of 10. The catfish was fried perfectly. The grits were nice and creamy I. Also got a side of red beans and rice and they were fire. Really, really good. My friend additionally got the grits with shrimp. She said it was good. Now. Would I return back to this place? Probably not. Would I order pickup? Absolutely because the the one big issue, as someone else stated, the food is good, if you can get it, it took an hour for our food to come out. We had finished our drinks and were parched. They don't offer you water because again, you have to order at the counter and the food took an hour to come out and to the point some people that ordered after us got their food before us. First time coming here and the experience was warm. Was met by the owner and his mother in law and they were both engaging. The ambiance was cozy and felt like a neighborhood spot that their frequent customers know, they can come here for their favorite dish. Decided to get their full order of fried shrimp and they didn't disappoint. They were fresh and they had just the right amount of seasoning to leave a lasting taste in your mouth. I'd compare this to Galveston gumbo such as you find at gumbo dinner or little daddy gumbo bar on the strand. They use like a steam pot thing. Leaves a distinct flavor to the gumbo thats not "gumbo" flavor at least for me. Not sure its the same here just taste like it. The fish was really a star for me, as well as the star beer. You can never go wrong getting seafood here. The gumbo haw plenty of ingredients and you'll be very happy. I was disappointed with my fish sandwich though I always get it on a bun with a beautiful presentation. This time they actually made a sandwich with regular bread. I have no problem with that, but I could get this same sandwich at Nickel Burger for half the price. This was $20 for a small fish sandwich. I should have sent it back and got something worth $20. This is my 2nd time, maybe 3rd time here and tonight I brought 2 of my dearest friends to share in the wonderful experience I enjoyed during my previous visit. I was so disappointed, after waiting 45 minutes without being able to place an order I took my guests and left. My friend was disappointed she went to the front and relayed her concerns regarding the lack of service and our 45 minute wait without being able to order. There was a female who said she was the owner, which I thought was odd because I met the owner who was male. When my guests and I arrived the male seated us and had someone come and clean the table because my guests wanted a specific table. The atmosphere was great, the people there were 40 plus and that was lovely. We all were able to discuss the changes to the neighborhood and the businesses we used to frequent. I love that about the clientele, and was the main draw for me! My guests wife went to talk with the lady behind the counter. When she came outside she was so disappointed with the conversation with the female who identified herself as the owner, she said she was doing a review. This woman proceeded to tell my guest that I have not come to the counter to place an order. My friend held her ground saying "ma'am that is not true, I saw him go there at least 2 times and you were not here. This is one of those spots that the locals know about. It's definitely...IYKYK spots. Outside, there isn't a sign that says the name. There's a place for it, but it may be under repair. ‍ I did get a laugh at the sign over the front door. Once inside I was pleasantly surprised! The bar is right up front, and to the left are several romantic swanky tables. Jazz and R&B music was playing. Great ambiance. Be careful when walking, because the floor is plank like flooring. Same for when heading out to the backyard patio area. I was told by my party to order food at the bar before going to the patio. This was a good tip because I didn't notice anyone servicing the tables prior to the food arriving. The outdoor area is literally like being in a backyard with several areas to sit. The food looked really good. However, being allergic to shrimp, I didn't want to risk eating fish fried in the shrimp oil. So I opted for the Cobb Salad. Note: They don't offer diet sodas. So I had water with a slice of lemon, in a fancy wine glass. I felt fancy! My group had an awesome time. I ordered the crab rice and it was priced at $17 for an 8 oz cup, I wasted my time and my money. Let me tell y'all, this rice was absolutely disgusting, I couldn't even taste the crab meat in it because it wasn't actual lump crab meat and the rice itself is cooked with a lot of thyme, so if you are not someone that eats a lot of thyme, this dish isn't going to be for you. I heard of this restaurant and dish by word of mouth. This dish doesn't belong on anyone menu but it does belong in the trash can. Our group is visiting Houston and we saw Backyard Boil House was a few minutes away from where we are staying. We decided to give it a shot and we are glad that we did! I tried the shrimp and grits and shrimp po' boy. The prices are a bit steep, we were originally going to try the etouffee but couldn't justify spending $33 on it. However, you can taste how fresh the ingredients are and you can tell they put care into preparing the food. Everything was delicious, and I would recommend the shrimp and grits. I just have a few suggestions from a customer's perspective. When you enter the restaurant, it's a bit unclear whether you're supposed to seat yourself or order at the counter. Additionally, I would have liked to see a description of what's included in each menu item. For example, the po' boy came with tomato, onion, lettuce, and pickles. The shrimp and grits also had leeks or maybe celery (?) in the grits. I think it would be helpful to see this on the menu before ordering.
