So I'd been to what many Rhode Islanders would consider an "institution " once before an it was over a decade ago and was for lunch. Last night Laura and I decided to try it out for dinner. The ambiance is dark yet elegant as Capriccio's is in the basement of an old turn of the century building. All the wait staff are dressed in black slacks white shirts and black bow ties. The service was professional and Heidi our waitress was friendly and efficient. We started with splitting a Caesar Salad and we are glad we did as it was plenty for both of us and quite good. Laura got the Sea Bass special with lobster risotto and spinach. She gave it a 3.75. I ordered the Veal Parmigiana assuming this place would do it well. And they did but I was hoping for a bit more gnocchi than 8/9 pieces. Overall it was a good dining experience but I think there are better Italian restaurants in RI. Salud! read more

It's been 45 years since my last visit and my wife's first time. 7:15 Friday night resy and the place seemed to be about half full. Our guest was not a native English speaker so I asked the server to slow down his explanations of the specials. He wasn't able to do that and our guest didn't understand a word. The wine steward broke off a piece of cork on our first bottle and it ended up in our guest's glass. Our guest removed the cork and laid it on the table. The steward joked about it but not a word of apology. Wife and I both had veal Saltimbocca. Waiter brought sharper knives before the meal came and they were needed. Taste was good but unremarkable. Our guest had the filet. He didn't complain but left half of it on his plate. That says something. Fourth diner had a pasta dish which he liked. Prices were not inexpensive and there are many options in Providence at this price range. Capriccio really needs to make improvements or the future of this venerable institution is uncertain. read more

We ordered littleneck clams, lobster cardinale, and some fish. The clams aren't the best for the area, the lobster was overcooked and rubbery, and the special underwhelming. A fly landed in my glass of wine, the vodka might have been watered down, and the bread tasted stale. There are many great restaurants in Providence, but this may not be one. I haven't been to Capriccio's in like 20 years, so during our staycation, we decided to try it again. I used to frequent it for biz meals and fondly remembered it's excellent service and food. In the coronavirus era, I was happy to see them take all the precautions - disposable menus, outdoor dining option, distanced tables, mask-wearing staff (and the valets wear gloves in addition to the masks when parking your car). Service was generally very good and personable, although a little slow between courses. My family and I shared some appetizers and pastas: smoked salmon, kobe carpaccio, seared foie gras, and oysters Rockefeller for the antipasti; and for the primi: cacio e pepe, cavatelli bolognese, and although it was off-menu, a linguini pomodoro. All were excellent, but shout-outs to the salmon, carpaccio, and the cacio e pepe. For secondi, we chose respectively: the Berkshire pork porterhouse, veal isola verde, Grand Marnier duckling, trout almondine, and seared diver scallops. Unfortunately, this is where the menu fell a bit flat. The scallops exhibited a fishy odor which indicated that they weren't at the peak of freshness; the duck was on the dry side while the Grand Marnier sauce was cloying and made the crisp roasted duck skin soggy (the accompanying ratatouille, however, was very good). Both the pork chop and the trout were only deemed okay. The best dish was the veal isola - this was excellent. These main entrees were rather lackluster in general; I think where the menu got lost is that they weren't truly Italian in style (with the exception of the veal) and more a fusion cuisine of French and pan-European which just didn't execute well. The desserts, however, recovered the menu's equilibrium: a cloud-soft and boozy tiramisu, a smooth creamy creme brulee, and a rich chocolate mousse were a fine ending to the meal. These were all top-notch. So all in all, if we were to repeat this, we'd overload on the apps and pastas, and if desiring a main entree, probably stick with those dishes that are more Italian in heritage or style. read more

This was my first time at a restaurant as fancy as this one. I felt like Julia Robert's in Pretty Woman We were seated at a small table surrounded by brick. Michael was our waiter. He was sooooo nice, knowledgeable & attentive. An absolute treat to have him waiting on us! He knew his stuff! Walked me to the restroom and everything. He's been there 20+ years and it was so special to have such amazing service. I had the beef Wellington! When I saw that on the menu I was sooo excited! That's something I've always dreamed of having & knowing it was finally my time with the best ingredients! Ugh. Tearing up thinking about it! And endless wine/spirits list! The good: Valet service. Staff - everyone except our waiter towards the end. Drinks great. Great ambiance. Nice decor. The bad: Food - they need to be ok with actually seasoning their food. Fried frog legs had no flavor. Alfredo dish with the shrimp and the other Alfredo w/ salmon lacked flavor. My friends used the sauce from my duck dish to flavor their pasta dish. The worse: After we calculated the bill and handed over cash and credit cards, we didn't realize we were short by $9 before tip. The waiter comes back, sternly hands the bill back and states, "You are short $9 and there's no tip" This statement ^^ pissed me off. I felt very offended as a group of black women enjoying ourselves. A simple mistake of being short of $9 can easily be corrected. However to say the tip was not included out loud was unacceptable especially when the waiter didn't finish running the credit cards! After telling him ok we will fix it, a member of our party entered the $9 incorrectly. So I entered it properly on my bill and handed it to the waiter. He returns and asks me what he's doing with card. He also states you gave me a very nice tip already ma'am. By now, I've covered the $80 tip we were planning to give on my card. I said sternly did you not say we were short $9?! Run the card! At this point, I didn't want to be in the space. I didn't drive an hour to have very expensive unseasoned food. We went here after our 25th anniversary and after our vow renewal. We have been here before and this visit was not very good. Started off with watching the Valet open the door for the car in front of us, hug the people in the car and then walk by our car with my wife in passenger seat and open the car behind us. Atmosphere was the same and nice. Waiter was jovial and we tried the Price fix menu. Frog legs were "Swimming" in sauce. Escargot was greasy but Arancini were good but needed more sauce. Service is very slow. I hate a waiter that removes my drink before I am done with it. Finally got our meals and we ordered our Filets medium rare and they were Well done. Took awhile to flag down our waiter, as he had a big party also, and he stated that the cook that normally handles the steaks called out and his replacement "obviously cannot read a thermometer!". He also stated that they "threw out about $9,000.00" in incorrect orders tonight!?! He offered to bring out another Filet. Everyone was finished and we were still waiting so we asked to make them to go and iust have dessert. Will probably not go back after this meal. Got home and this was the steak. I haven't been to Capriccio for over 20 years. Went last night to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and it didn't disappoint. Seated immediately, served water and bread instantaneously. Waiter came over to order drinks and review all of the specials. We waited for nothing. The veal soup was divine and the veal parmigiana was fabulous. My only negative comment would be there was too few gnocchi. My husband had the beef Wellington and he said it was Fabulous. The cannoli topped off this fantastic evening. 3.5 Stars if I could. First things first - the food was delicious, so thank goodness for that! I picked this place for my bf's birthday bc he had mentioned wanting to try Boeuf Wellington at some point and this was the only place I could find that does it locally (if you know of others, let me know!!), reservations were easy via Open Table and complimentary valet is always nice, especially on a Waterfire night. We were seated promptly - I should've requested a more intimate table. Although we weren't sitting on top of anyone - it just felt very cramped. Seemed like they tried to maximize their seating as much as possible. So much so, that a couple 2 tables away from us had to watch their "table side" service being cooked next to us. It was too tight for the cart to be maneuvered to their table so they basically had to watch their meal being made from afar. Not much table side service going on there. Our waiter, although friendly seemed a bit frazzled. My bf asked what the Sam Adams beer was that they had - he said Winter but they came back and said it was Octoberfest. When the beer actually came it was Summer Seasonal - no explanation, he just poured and walked away. My bf is not picky so didn't complain. All of the food was delicious - we ordered the foie Gras, smoked caprese, Boeuf Wellington and Pollo Arnaud. A nice touch - they split our appetizers to share for us already. Little did they know, my bf ate all the foie gras by himself lol. We enjoyed the food but we just felt like the intimate factor of a nice romantic dinner was just so so. I attended a dinner here a few weeks ago and despite all the hype i'm not that impressed. First off. Valet parking. You had one guy just ripping butts who seemed very standoffish with customers. I got stuck trying to get into the Valet line and got blocked in. These guys were as slow as molasses. We were stuck for about 25 minutes unable to move, we eventually got the car behind us to move so we could get out and park in a garage. First impression not impressed. We get in and are seated. I noticed there were lots of fruit flies. Not like one or two. There were tons of them. Personally over dinner I killed 5 or 6. When the waiter asked me how I was doing I said, "fine but there's an abnormal amount of flies" He told me he has not seen any. Come on man. There were tons of fruit flys. My wife's drink came with a fruit fly in it and they looked at us like we were insane for wanting a fresh drink without a fly. I'm sorry if i'm spending $20 some odd dollars for a drink I don't want a damn fruit fly in it. The entire dinner there were fruit flies buzzing around. Everyone at the dinner was talking about the fruit flies. The food was meh. I got the gnocchi with veal parm. No where in the menu or did the waiter mention that only 3 pieces of tiny gnocchi would be with the veal. Yikes. Did I mention there were fruit flies all over the place? I wont' be back to this place, obviously there are some health standards that need to be taken care of and reading a ton of other reviews shows that this place seems to have a fruit fly problem. This place hadn't been on my radar before even tho it's been around for a while. If you want low lighting and an upscale feeling, this is the place. It's nice that they have the $39.99 3 course option which has a good amount of choices. I went with the arancini which were tasty and light. For another $6 I got the tenderloin which was a bit beyond medium but still very flavorful. The mushrooms and cippolini mushrooms were good but I would have appreciated a green veg too. Friend went all out with escargots, lobster bisque and a pasta dish w lobster when they no longer had the duck available. Lots of people were ordering flambéd dishes which was a fun show. Tiramisu was fine, good choices of wine and beer and a back bar area that looked fun (if all the mirrors don't confuse you getting there haha). Let's start with the food, I ordered Veal Parmesan and my wife and Son had the filet mignon EXCELLENT!!!. all three meals were cooked to perfection. John was our server and he was very attentive and such a nice person to talk to. From appetizers to dessert, everything was perfect. I love the ambience of the restaurant being downstairs is very quiet and the decor is beautiful. do not be afraid to go to Capriccio's because every dollar you spend is worth five between the food service and the ambiance you will not be disappointed. For that classic upscale Providence Italian restaurant, Capriccio is definitely a go-to. Right next to the Providence River, Capriccio is pretty hard to miss with it's big lights and white doors. Once you go inside and go down the stairs, you feel like you've entered a delightful wine cellar with cozy warm fireplaces. Grabbing a seat by the fireplace, the waiters really can't be beat. In their black and white tuxedos, their hospitality makes you feel like it's a comfortable dining experience. For the food, I would describe the menu as being impactful. All of the dishes I ordered, ranging from Kobe Carpaccio to Berkshire Porkloin, really pack a punch of flavor. Ugh. This is a difficult review because I really wanted to LOVE Capriccio. If I could exclude the food, I would give 5 stars ... but that's just not how this works. The decor, ambiance, and service are truly impeccable. You are greeted with friendly valet and a coat check attendants. You then walk down a few steps into an underground Italian restaurant. We went at the end of valentines day weekend so there were red hearts and red decor everywhere and a red rose on every table. I was impressed immediately and thought "this is the perfect special occasion restaurant". The service was truly impeccible and our every need was met. For the food .. we started with the Kobe carpaccio and the mozzarella fritta. For $17 each I was expecting so so so much more. The carpaccio is not even in the running for best I've ever had but definitely wins for most expensive. The meat itself was very fresh but the dish had basically no flavor and was soaked in way too much oil. I had to doctor it up with lemon and black pepper. The mozzarella fritta is described as " prosciutto & basil wrapped, panko-breaded and seared mozzarella" and what we received tasted simply like mozzarella sticks with a side of marinara. I was expecting something more. For entrees: my fiancé had the Beef Wellington. He requested to have no truffles in the dish, and to his dismay it came out with mushrooms. He still enjoyed his meal. I had the Scampi all Gino which is flambéd at the table. Having the meal prepared at the table was great fun and added a special touch to the meal. Unfortunately, the flavors in this dish fell short for me again. The description boasted a lemon-garlic white wine sauce with plum tomatoes and shrimp over angel hair pasta. Instead of any flavor of a delicate lemon and wine sauce, the dish had a strong flavor of red peppers. Sadness :( The shrimp were very good though! With that being said, maybe we came in on an off night or the flavor just isn't for me. For $133 for two people, there are other high end places. read more

Will never go back. Maybe our waiter was having a bad bad but he was rude, disingenuous and seemed like he wanted to be anywhere else. Prices are expensive enough where you expect servers to check in to see how you are doing, how is food, do you need anything - standard stuff. I don't understand the appeal, feels like a tourist trap which we fell for and are not tourists. Food was not bad, but the experience, decor, waiter was and will never give back, nor recommend. My company takes is here annually for a thank you holiday event. It's always amazing food and great service. But this time they went above and beyond. I'm a new mother who is breastfeeding which means I have to pump when I'm out. And this can be very awakwrd, challenging and anxiety causing as you may image. The wait staff were so kind and understanding. They set me up in a private room that wasn't being used and let me use it 2 times while we were there. They honestly made it so easy and welcoming that I really enjoyed me time (which rare now having an infant). So the service is WONDERFUL. But let's get to the good and drinks. Now I can't speak for the alcoholic drinks but I can say the red wines that everyone had smelled amazing and the team seemed to enjoy them. They did even make a speciality drink not on their menu for a few of my coworkers. Well trained bartenders for sure. The food, oh my God. We eat for abt 3 hours and everything was so good. The one item I didn't love was the rice balls. Typically these are a little more cheesy and to my liking but they just didn't have enough cheese to have the right flavor me. We shared a ton of apps, caprese, stuffed zucchini flowers, calamari and it keeps going. All wonderful. That was a meal in itself. Then o had a lobster bisque. I have to say it was like it had a base of chicken stock or something similar it was good but not the classic creamy new England bisque I was hoping for. For an entree I had the veal parm which came with some gnocchi as well. SO GOOD!! I love veal and this veal was prefect melt in your mouth. Can't wait to eat the left overs. Dessert I had tea and Panna Cotta. I had never had a Panna Cotta before but this was delicious! I think it's become a new favorite of mine. We were treated so very badly in that restaurant as an African American couple! We were put to seat at a small little that was way in corner of a back door exit so we won't be seeing and might you the restaurant was not busy, they walked us through the whole room, past 7 empty tables to get us out of the way. When I asked to switch seat I was asked what's the problem with this table, which I have never encounter in my life if I had asked to sit at a different table at a restaurant, why was I being questioned?? I didn't want to make a scene so I just said I don't feel comfortable sitting back there! The service was okay, our waiter was so busy that he practically forgot about us from time to time I don't blame it on him because he was running around a lot. While the Maître D never even acknowledge that we were there, he walking around to everybody else's table checking on them. I will never go back there and I want to know why do they feel that African American does not belong there, or shouldn't be seen there because that's what they were doing hiding us where they put us to sit. Food was not that great, my salmon was dry, dessert was delicious and cocktail was made freshly well. But as far as the respect that they gave to my boyfriend and I it was terrible. At some point, we needed to get our food packed to go and felt like everybody completely forgot we existed, until another waiter notice that and packed up the food for us. And to tell you, my boyfriend and I drove from Boston to Providence to try it out because we love to try new restaurants. Capriccio was a very big disappointment on the treatment we received there But we still give the waiter $30 tip on $148 Bill we didn't go in there begging for food we went in there to enjoy ourselves and they're made our date night terrible read more

This is my second time at Capriccio's and I must say The restaurant experience compared to take-out is much different. We can explain the experience of waiting to get our food as unpleasant, disengaged and uninviting. I understand it was busy because of restaurant week and we were not dining-in costumers, however, we are still paying customers that deserve the same respect. I would have given this establishment a 4 because of the food and my previous experience - which was wonderful. But, unfortunately this was disappointing. $90 for takeout and bad service, gee wiz! On a positive and saving note, the food is always great. I ordered a goat cheese, beet, pistachio and mixed green salad which was deliciously sweet and packed with goodies. For my entree I ordered Cavatelli Bolognese which was very cold but still yummy. The pasta was aldente and the sauce meaty. It did not have the xtra sweet or spice flare that some Bolognese sauces do - it was just a nice classic sauce. My friend ordered the Aricini risotto - crispy, delicious sauce was the verdict, but yes cold. We only live 5 minutes away so the food should not have gotten cold that quickly. The Marsala was great- fresh mushrooms, tasty sauce! The green beans were hardly cooked and the potatoes were too cooked. Lastly the tiramisu was superb! Last night my husband and I went to Capriccios in Providence Rhode Island. We go there every year for his birthday. We ordered our favorite shrimp flambé. To say the shrimp was like shoe leather is no exaggeration. We could barely cut it or chew it. We brought some home and had our daughter try it. She also described it as shoe leather. My boyfriend has been talking about this restaurant for ages and we finally had a chance to dine here last night. The ambiance was gorgeous and incredible cozy. We ordered the Oysters Rockefeller and it was superb. We then had the duck and the day boat scallops with pasta. The duck was wonderful. Perfectly prepared and delicious- with crispy skin and juicy meat. It was truly excellent. The 4 scallops were large and well cooked. Sadly, the seasoning had way, way too much table salt added and they were left inedible. The server and management were excellent though and replaced the scallops with another dish. The decor, the grand chairs and well spaced tables, perfectly lit light; could not ask for more!
