This place was AWFUL. The food was disgusting, the service was awful. Stringy flavorless pork. Literally 7 pieces about the size of a quarter for $12! Never again. The server never came back to check to see if everything was ok, I literally took one bite and had to pay for my whole meal. read more

So gross never again! We ordered BBQ pork And it smelled like ketchup didn't taste any better actually looks like pork smothered in ketchup.. The chow main was bean sprouts in some kind of soup and beef no noodle at all.. tried to give it a chance thinking maybe it tasted better than it looked.. so gross instant regret.. I tried calling and they just made excuses.. plus all the food tasted old. Wish there was a way to get out money back or something, we can't even stomach the food! read more

Canton Restaurant - Chow main - Chinese Near Me - Barstow, California

See all

It really is a great restaurant. They have cheap beer, good cocktails and a huge assortment of items. The food was very low cost but tasted great. My girlfriend and I enjoyed ourselves for lunch today. The server was very nice and helpful. While the food is not high quality Chinese the price point is well below what you get, tons of food!!! read more

Don't go near this place for any reason. I should have had my head screwed on right by reading that this was an American-Chinese restaurant. That was the huge warning sign, but feeling desperate for some Chinese food, my wife and I entered the zone. The menu didn't offer any clues, so we both ordered what was supposed to be chicken with snow peas. When the plates came there were lots of boiled vegetables, a decent amount of chicken bits but no snow peas whatsoever. So, we dig in and find the entire mixture to be entirely tasteless ... I mean utterly tasteless. My wife was so disgusted that she ordered a second dish -- one that was supposedly going to be very hot and spicey. It turned out to be the same damn dish. The same flavorless vegetables (not stir fried but boiled). It became evident that we were dupes. The major eating area was completely absent of any other customers. The only people who seemed to have the dope on this place were seated at a bar. They seemed like regulars and most likely were eating american-type food. Fools that we were, we sat alone in their main dining area, munching some bites of the kitchen's boil-in-bag level of cuisine. I wasn't expecting the best Chinese food but something mild Cantonese and tasty. I was vastly mistaken. I don't know what it is about Barstow. Sure, it has a small population, but still you'd expect one good Chinese restaurant, one good steakhouse, but no. They simply do not exist. Living in Barstow is like living on a failed colony of Mars. read more

Not an ideal place to eat. We were desperate and totally forgot the better area of Barstow at the outlets.

The worst food in California. I have been there 3 times in 3 years being invited by friends. Now I question my friends if they ever had any good food in there life. Service is slower then being fed by waiters from a rest home. Food so disgusting it would be unfit to serve as witches brew in Guatemala. If I could give this place the rating it deserves it would be -10 stars read more

Was looking for old Barstow Tea Party meeting there, but they may have had to go underground to escape Soros violent agents. Limited menu, but good food and nice, helpful staff. read more

Came here because I was getting my tires done next door, so me and my family decided to get breakfast. Well it is a quite little place and home feel. But the service sadly was very disappointing, the female waitress was so slow and talked so low it was actually annoying cause you could not understand her. The food was ok,. Typical breakfast, it was good. The wait time for food and a refill was ridiculous. It was pretty dirty too. Ooohhh and they give cold ketchup. ( I hate that ). Don't think I will be back. read more

I wouldn't eat here again. It is over priced, the food quality is low, the atmosphere is terrible. You are better off going to Panda Express AKA Cat-Dog read more

If your idea of fine dining is a truck stop patty melt, skip this place and hit the truck stop! We couldn't finish our dinners as "over-processed" didn't begin to describe the food. If you happen to stop by, I would try the bar for a beer, but be sure to grab a bite to eat before you come! read more

I've loved this place for years. It's always hard to find a good Cantonese place versus Mandarin or (unfortunately and most often) Chinese American. Every Chinese restaurant is overrun w/ curry & cornstarch. I recommend the moo goo guy pan & chop suey. Sit in the back room or big bar area to eat in this place. Ambiance is nicer in the back & you get bigger portions when you order in. read more

Went there just to use the wifi and ended up having a great 4.00 breakfast and great company with all the regulars. But the best part was the waitress Savanna, really liked her attitude! Thanks Savanna for the help with my kindle !!! read more

we were looking for a simple place to eat, and pass by this one. From the look outside, we didn't expect much. Surprisingly it was not bad at all for something in the middle of no where. We were all surprised their Cantonese food is as good as some of the ones in the sf bay area, authentic Cantonese. read more

Been here twice and the food is very very good, going to become a regular here. Fast service food is always good quality food the servings are big. A must try in Barstow. read more

This is not a bad restaurant. However, we just happened to order 4 dishes, ended up looked like two only. Three of them are just exactly the same vegetables as ingredients to mixed with different meat. One was stir-fried with Chicken, one was stir-fried with pork, another is won ton soup. These three were tasted same, looked same, just like one big dish.... it is ok to have something to eat. If you want to eat good Chinese dishes. Maybe it is good to ask waiter or waitress about what's in the dishes to avoid our situation. By the way, the soup was very salty.... read more

Yuck, the food was horrible. My wife ordered lo mein with chicken and got a big plate full of bean sprouts, there was probably only 10 noodles in there and some chicken. My daughter had orange chicken and the sauce tasted strange. Everything seemed dirty. When I got home I had serious diarrhea. We travel a lot and have been all over and have lived in Asia, my wife is from the Philippines and loves and knows all types of asian dishes. read more

Best hot and sour soup in town. The restaurant can use a good cleaning so we get our food to go.

This place has the absolute worst food I've ever tasted! Fried rice tasted like it was boiled in dish water. Don't eat here! Keep driving, anything is better than this! read more

On a Sunday night we ordered the family dinner for three. The food was on our table in five minutes. Cold fried rice, egg foo young with a biscuit gravy, sweet and sour pork that had been sitting in a warming tray for days, egg roll so greasy you needed a bib and fried shrimp, you know the kind with a tiny shrimp covered in a heavy batter. The star attraction was the almond cookie. The worst Chinese food ever, ever, ever! I suppose the "learning moment" here is when the nightly special at the Chinese Restaurant is Prime Rib, order it! Or turn around and head out the door. read more

NOTE - this is a late review - it's been about 18 months since our visit. In fact, it was this experience that motivated me to get a Yelp account so I could leave a review. I just forgot to leave the review! This place is the epitome of the "before" Kitchen Nightmares! I wonder from the other reviews, if there are two "The Canton" restaurants in Barstow. For many years I've gotten a creepy feeling from this place and either not gone in or quickly left without being sat or eating. Finally thought I'd give it a try for take out - some friends came over, suggested we try it and in the spirit of adventure, I said What the Heck - it can't kill us.. About two hours later no one could eat more than a bite or two of any of it - really strange looking, chewy, unfamiliar tastes from all of it. I threw away about 50 bucks worth of carry out, but on the plus side for all you large portion fans, for 50 bucks, there was really a lot of food! Just couldn't eat it, that's all. So about six months later, thinking the above experience was a fluke (the parking lot is usually full - good sign, right?), my Lady and I give it another shot. It was late - the place was almost empty, save one or two at the bar. The décor was dated, the place was dirty and well, not wholesome feeling at all, more cartoonish - felt like the twilight zone - bright humming fluorescent lights with a kind of green hue, like something you would expect in a morgue or a broken power plant break room. We order - I don't even remember what it was, but as any good first time patron, you go with the waitress recommendation. The green tea was good - and though I can'ton remember what we had, I will never forget the oily film it left in my mouth that no lie, was still there the next day. If my memory serves me, they took out order quickly but it took forever to be served, and the food, all of it, when we finally got it, looked like it had been previously served. We poked at it a tiny bit, put small amounts in our mouth - not enough you'd think, to get an oily film from hell, but No exaggeration, that's how it went. The waitress agreed that the food didn't look very good, and with the bosses permission, we left without paying. On the plus side though - the portions were large, very large, and it was reasonably priced. read more

I was tempted to give this place for stars because I was pleasantly surprised but I came in with seriously low expectations. If you see an American Chinese restaurant run. It usually means you're going to get served Chop Suey from a can and Soggy fries and burgers. But it was either Canton or fast food in Barstow and we were too hungry to wait 2 hours 4 Las Vegas. You walk in and the place feels dirty. It's old. It just does. Our server was friendly and efficient and we ordered safely. Veggie fried rice and moo goo gai pan with the intention of returning the moogoo if the chicken was nasty. The portions are huge and our food was flavorful. The chicken didn't kill us. I was a bit disappointed that the veggie fried rice had only bean sprouts carrots and peas and that's it, and the only vegetables in the moogoo were celery cabbage and water chestnuts with a couple of peapods. In a non-american Chinese restaurant you would have fresh vegetables like broccoli, fresh not canned mushrooms. Overall, I didn't get sick and I wasn't disgusted so I was happy with dinner. read more

Great prices, but you are getting what you pay for. The food is just average. The Chinese is very fresh with the possible exception of the fried rice which is neither fresh or good. Egg roll is different-almost like a tempura batter rather than an egg roll wrapper. Also ordered a burger and fries. No complaint here, entirely ordinary. The bacon we ordered on the other hand was a little odd and looked like maybe it was deep fried too. Biggest let down of the day... no refills on soft drinks, but all the iced tea you want (yuck)! Really glad they told us up front though. Waitress service is about what you can expect in a Chinese restaurant-ok, not great. The location itself is old and out dated but it is obvious that they try to keep it looking nice. It is nice and clean read more

I was very disappointed with the Mongolian Beef. The gravy on it was extremely salty and the beef was tough and of poor quality. The rice was over cooked and had bits of scrambled eggs in it which is not the type of rice to accompany Mongolian Beef.It is supposed to be Spicy it wasn't just very Salty. The egg roll had no meat lots of cabbage and a thick crust/shell. Part of the vegetables inside were cold even though it was deep fried. I don't recommend this restaurant. I gave it a one star rating because ZERO STARS were not available. read more

We had a good run for Chinese buffets for this whole trip until this one. We thought Canton restaurant was a buffet place. Turns out it's a regular American restaurant, not a buffet restaurant. It's a wannabe Norm's restaurant. We had 3 dishes: meatloaf, pan fry pork chops, roast chicken. They all come with salads, soup, dinner roll, green bean. Pork chops were too dry. Roast chicken tastes like 5 day old stinky socks, even the baked patato tastes like 5 days old stinky socks . The only edible foods were salad, apple sauce and meatloaf. They do give a lot of food though read more

I've passed by this place many times without knowing that it was actually open. The restaurant sign looks like it would be in front of an abandoned place . . not to mention. Matter of fact I was so sure that was closed that I even thought it was closed when I went up to the door after the guy at American Tire Depot suggested I go there to get a coffee (I was thinking, isn't that place closed?) Outside of a few corporate spots (iHop, Denny's) , there's 4 restaurants in Barstow that are worth your time. One Italian and two Mexican . . This place is a good optionm I plan on returning. They just need more vegetarian and gluten-free options and they'd be great If you count the vegetable fried rice there's 2 vegetarian options - the other is eggplant in garlic sauce . . but it's very oily read more

The food's Ok but have eaten better Chines food. Prices are so-so. I only recommend the Egg Foo Young.

Everything with fresh veggies was outstanding. Anything fried was very greasy. Beer was cold.

I eat lunch here, large selection of American sandwiches, all good. Large selection of American and Chinese (Cantonese?) dinners, all large portions. They even have Chinese family style dinners for 3-5 people. Prices are very low, portions are very large. American breakfasts are good, and I think are served all day. I've never been disappointed, always satisfied. Well worth the price. Large parking lot (large vehicles should enter from street behind restaurant). Located north of I-15 on West Main St. East of Ave L exit. read more

The food is pretty good. The staff is very friendly. If you are looking for good, home cooking style food, this is your place. It's not fancy, but it's made fresh and all hone ade, no frozen crap. read more

We wanted Vietnamese Pho but nothing like that in this town. Every fast food joint you can name is here. Went to Canton for some hot and sour. My wife got that and she liked it. Just too much. I thought I'd try the pork egg foo young. Taste was good but the gravy they smothered it with was an interesting concept. And gravy on the steamed rice. And a bowl of rich gravy on the side just in case!!! Never have I had Chinese food with gravy. Ate about half of it. The menu was limited with about half the food being American favorites like chicken fried steak, burgers, sandwich and some simple chines samplings. Looks like the local go hear because it is cheap eats. $20 for two. read more

I really enjoyed the clam chowder; spare ribs and stur fried rice at an extremely reasonable price. The hostess was very friendly and engaging. So much food was given a to go box was a sure thing. I will be returning often and with anticipation. read more

my wife and I live in Barstow and have been eating at the Canton for many years. The establishment traded hands a little over a year or so I believe and today 90/19/18 we decided to see how the new owner were doing. Much to my surprise it was fantastic. We ordered the Hot and Sour soup and Shrimp Foo Yong, which was one of the norms for us to order here. Unbelievable, kudos to the new owners. The food was outstanding, the place is clean and neat, a little higher in price than some other places, but the price was well worth it. We also ordered a side of broccoli/beef, we took enough food between the two dishes for another two meals. My congrats to the new owners, outstanding food, great service and incredible take off on the two dishes we were so used to eating there. Five stars, without a doubt. We will start going back again and try some of the other dishes we used to order. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone, located on main st, route 66 easy to get to from the 15 freeway, drop down on L st, left to route 66 and right on main. down on the right hand side maybe a mile or so, on the right. Worth going out of your way to get there, just be hungry. Don and Happy Shater, Barstow residents. read more
