And I had to ask "What is a Jamaican Style Meat Patty"? and they told me it's like an empanada! But WOAH. It's much bigger than any empanada I've ever seen! The staff was super nice on the phone to me when they explained what it was and that we were able to turn the meat patty into a vegetarian friendly version - nice! They also had a vegetarian one! So we grabbed 2 and got 2 free then decided to also order their vegetarian curry because we thought the meat patties wouldn't be enough. But omg. It was more than enough! The meat patties were huge and thick! And so so so FLAVORFUL! When you come to their shop inside the food hall the shop looks unassuming, it's cluttered and doesn't really give me the excitement of wanting to order here but wow wow wow. Once we ate it we were like "we shouldn't have judged!" Once we dived into the curry we were just waaaay to full but the vegetarian curry was so good. Not as flavorful as the meat patty (should've had the curry first so our tastebuds wern't overwhelmed!" but still tasty nonetheless! It had so much chickpeas and the rice was pretty good! I think we're going to have to come back and try it again when we're in the area!

We started with the appetizer of empanada with beef, which was stuffed with tasty picadillo! For mains I had the ropa vieja with arroz con gandules which are pigeon peas. Everything was cooked to perfection and full of flavor! My companion had the pan con lechon or pork sandwich with the slow cooked mojo pork. The bread, the pork flavor and toasting were all spot on! I haven't had Cuban food this good since moving from Florida! We loved it so much we tried their drive in sandwich shop on the way back and everything was also amazing! The restaurant was super cute decorated for the holiday but is normally decorated in Cuban flare and is very clean. It was a weekday night with just a few tables so the service, everything seemed cooked to order and the waiter was very nice.

The meat was tender and juicy, had a great authentic Cuban flavor, nice big lunch portion that will make a nice snack tonight. A+ I tried the Cuban fried rice and was very happy with the portion size and the flavor. Loaded with goodness and super fresh and tasty. The staff was very friendly and quick. Will definitely be back the next time we have a hankering for tasty Cuban food.

The first time I went I tried the Jamaican beef patties, the oxtail empanada and the chicken empanadas with both their ranch and their hot sauce. The staff was very friendly and I love that this is a woman owned business. The oxtail empanada is to DIE for. The chicken one has a curry like flavor and was also delicious. The beef patty was unlike anything I've had before. The texture of the filling caught me by surprise because it's softer than I expected but once I figured that out I really liked it. Both the hot sauce and the ranch are also delicious, but if you like heat I would definitely recommend the hot sauce the most. In fact I liked this place so much that I went back the next week to get more and at that point also tried the beef empanada. Beef was also delicious! Altogether my favorite was the oxtail hands down, then the Jamaican patty, then chicken, the regular beef. You won't be disappointed with any! I also found that they reheat really well in the air fryer. I microwaved them out of the fridge for about 30 seconds to a minute, just until they were slightly warm to the touch. And then put them in the air fryer at about 350 flipping once for around 6-8 minutes. Amazing!

I provide that information because sadly, the food tasted as if I was served the portions of chicken curry, cabbage, and mixed vegetables that had been sitting in the pots all day or had been reheated from previous days. This truly hurt my hurt as it has been a long time coming for a Caribbean restaurant to arrive in Long Beach. The chicken curry lacked balanced flavor due to it sitting and seemed to have more and more curry added and no other spices to play on the notes from the chicken. So it was just an overcooked, concentrated, high sodium, scotch bonnet(ed), abused curry with meat that was struggling to maintain its right to be chicken but the flavors of chicken had been executed. Second, spoiled cabbage anyone? I knew it as soon as I opened it. It smelled of cabbage that had been forced to over stay its welcome and by the portion size, I was to see the extra servings of it as an award but it just turned into a punishment. I truly believe, or at least want to, believe this was an off day and whoever permitted the "last of.." to be served was just off their game and will read this review and never make these mistakes again. I believe in you and am definitely willing to give this restaurant another try in the future. For now I need to take some time and recover. But please, I rooting for you, believe in you, and know that your love for the food and culture will step back up to the high quality standards it created!

And am I glad I followed my spirit in this one! When I pulled up I was greeted with fragrant scent of spice then the doors opens to deep aromas of jerk and curry! Bag was ready and piping hot! And I must tell you it was the longest 14.6 miles home ever with all those spices slapping me in the face! We ordered 2 Dinners and a side. Dinner one was Oxtails with gravy the second was Curry Chicken. Each dinner comes with rice and peas, a cabbage mix and plantains. Along with a side of jerk chicken. The oxtails were delicious. Be sure to ask for heavy gravy as that's kind of light (Wish I had asked for that on the Curry). The flavor was so deep I flew back to my island retreat in my mind!! I am know as the bland food eater so the curry and oxtails were at my spice max. I enjoyed the fullness of the spices and even appreciated the heat that came with it . I polished off the remaining rice and peas later in the evening (glad I ask for additional gravy) and I think the flavor may have been a bit better after settling at room temp, as I I was staring at the plate like why isn't there more!! I did bravely taste the jerk and it too was a very Carribean scent (although too spicy for me personally) the flyover was rich and chicken was moist so that a plus and my partner gobbled it up so tells me that the item was good. Tameka, you and your hubby need a store front restaurant , food truck or hell a cart to be tablet to serve the AV. Y'all owe it to yourselves, the AV. The community, heck to me! I can't say enough good things about this place!…read more My husband and I went out to Joshua Tree for my birthday weekend and this was a last minute find for a birthday dinner. I'm so happy we found this gem. Make sure to have reservations, as the night progressed I realized how popular it is and for good reason. The ambience is amazing at night when the lights are on it has a beautiful atmosphere. They curate everything perfectly. Our waiter was so kind, very knowledgeable on everything we ordered and shared that the chef was Jamaican which was such a neat surprise. The drinks were strong and still delicious. We ordered Brussel sprouts, broccolini, Jerk Chicken and Chimichurri Steak. Everything was incredible. If you're ever in the area I highly recommend for an unforgettable meal and experience. Will definitely return even if it's not on my birthday!

Went to dinner two nights ago and honestly, I'm still kind of shocked at the level of hospitality…read more We were only about 10 minutes late--and it was a Tuesday, not exactly peak rush. I walked up first with my sister and mom right behind me, immediately apologizing and saying hello to who I assume was the host... or maybe a manager? It genuinely wasn't clear. I explained that I had tried calling, got no answer, and followed the instructions to text the number provided saying we were on the way. When I brought that up, my sister stepped forward to show the text, and the response we got was, "What am I looking at?"--said in a way that felt unnecessarily rude and dismissive. It was literally just the message we were told to send. Then we were told they don't even receive texts and that it goes to "headquarters"... for a small restaurant? That alone was bizarre and off-putting. We were seated, and from there the service stayed pretty mediocre. I had noted in the reservation that we were celebrating my sister's birthday, which was completely ignored the entire night. For context, we were only in Joshua Tree for three days--we were visiting from Portland--and this is a place we usually make a point to come to. So yes, expectations were higher because this was supposed to be a special dinner. The food itself didn't help. Our chicken came out with an extremely spicy sauce underneath that completely overpowered the dish. It was so intense we were literally turning red. We mentioned it to the server, and nothing was done or offered--no acknowledgment beyond that. What really stood out was the timing of everything. The server didn't check on us until we had already eaten about 80% of the meal, which made it pointless to even give feedback at that stage. By the time we were finished and had been sitting for a while, we couldn't even find him. Then suddenly he appeared to ask if we wanted dessert... well after we were clearly done. Still, no mention of the birthday, no effort to make the moment feel even slightly special. On top of that, it was freezing outside. The table next to us was given blankets, but none were offered to us--even though we were sitting there in tank tops. At one point, the same host who had been rude earlier was folding blankets right in front of us without saying a word, which honestly just added to the uncomfortable feeling. Overall, this was a really disappointing experience, especially for one of our first nights back in town. It kind of set the tone in the worst way and brought everything back to that initial interaction at the door. There really wasn't an excuse for it either--the restaurant looked nearly empty, even around 6:20. Save your time and go to Pioneer Town.
