It was my first time in Lucerne Valley and I was originally looking for a thrift store but it was closed. As we made our way back home we realized we were pretty hungry and came across China House. There were other small cafes nearby but who doesn't love Chinese food? The place is certainly vibrant and interesting. Everyone was very welcoming and genuinely kind. We ordered Chardonnay and soda, white rice, chicken fried rice, chicken chow mein and sweet and sour shrimp. Honestly everything was fantastic but the fried rice... MY GOODNESS. My hometown is Korea Town so I'd like to think that I know my rice. This was hands down the best friend rice I've ever had thus far. For all the food and drinks we ordered, the bill came out to $62 and we received a coupon to return. What a steal! They were so nice they brought us almond cookies and fortune cookies and even put our food away for us in take out boxes. Overall I'm very glad that we stumbled upon this restaurant and I look forward to returning. I hope they get more exposure because the food is way too good to go uneaten.

    "Fried Rice" ITS SPANISH RICE!

Went to the China House in Lucerne Valley yesterday for dinner. I used to come here alot along time ago but found out yesterday during my visit that they have changed ownership since the last time I've been there. I don't wanna sound like I'm bashing the new owners but this place no good anymore. Below is a picture of Mongolian Beef (there was almost no beef) and "Fried Rice" (actually Spanish rice). However staff were very friendly. Sadly we will not be returning after yesterday's visit.

We came out here looking for Rumaki, a popular appetizer from the Tiki era associated with Chinese-American cuisine. It is exceedingly hard to find so we had high hopes after perusing the menu online. This is an older establishment, the only Chinese restaurant in the Lucerne Valley. The exterior and interior has a well-worn ambiance to it. It is easily missed if you are driving through town so slow down and keep eyes peeled. GPS helps, too. The Rumaki here are large, made with chicken livers, water chestnuts, and bacon. Too bad the livers were overcooked so they disintegrated into tiny bits with each bite. The Rumaki could have been improved with the application of the same batter that the Butterfly Shrimp had prior to frying but they were okay as is. Served with the intense yellow mustard sauce found in Chinese restaurants. The appetizer plate came with fried shrimp, paper chicken, egg rolls, and bbq pork spareribs. The fried shrimp was battered nicely, crisply fried, and tasted very good. Eggs rolls and spareribs were good. The paper chicken not so much as they were very bland. War Wonton Soup was very delicious with a clear, light tasting broth. It had plenty of Napa cabbage and snow pea pods. There were slices of tender chicken breast in the soup; the well filled wontons were plump and flavorful. This is a definitely a good soup to have either with the meal or by itself. We also had the Lemon Chicken and Three Delights. The Lemon Chicken was rather unspeakable with a heavy, doughy crust and no discernible lemon flavoring whatsoever. The white meat chicken itself tasted bland and not freshly cooked. Three Delights was also bland and lacking in any caramelization flavor from the wok. There were plenty of beef, chicken, shrimp, and vegetables in the visually appealing dish but not much overall flavor. So disappointing. Other reviewers have noted the strange coloration in the fried rice as being very pale or pink. The predominant flavoring for their fried rice seems to be chicken bouillon and white pepper only, with the white pepper being most forward. Bits of eggs dot throughout the fried rice. It appears no soy sauce is used in the preparation and unknown if there is tomato to account for the color. However, I found that I enjoyed their fried rice since it is not the usual preparation. The white peppery kick definitely adds interest. It is uniquely theirs. Exemplary and very attentive service. They certainly do have a good business with returning clientele so I guess the locals find the food decent. The owner is from Taiwan so it would have been nice to have a few dishes from that region on the menu. The current menu is heavily Chinese-American since that is what people are familiar with but there is always room to introduce something new to update things.

Both visits were for pickup lunch specials, and each time the staff was welcoming and friendly. The ambience inside was very relaxing, with soft ambient music and dim lighting. The first visit I ordered the chicken and broccoli, which was excellent. This time I tried the Mongolian beef, and it did not disappoint. The meat was incredibly soft and tender both times. I'm originally from NY, so I'm pretty particular about Chinese food, and after living in California for 10 years, this is some of the closest-to-home Chinese food I've found here. The lunch special is a great value and comes with a generous portion of fried rice, an egg roll, a fried/tempura shrimp (which is delicious), plus almond cookies and fortune cookies. Consistently great food, great value, and a really pleasant experience overall. I'll definitely keep coming back every time I'm in the area.

I hate to write this, but my first time there will be the last. I ordered the Orange Chicken Rice…read moreBowl and asked if I could have fried rice instead of steamed rice. No, I could place a second order to get the fried rice. Ok, whatever, I'll take the steamed rice. The Orange Chicken was like rubber. I tried to bite a piece in half and it wouldn't pull apart, so the whole piece went in my mouth and I had to use my fingers to pull it apart which was embarrassing on a first date! It didn't taste good either. I looked for a knife in the plastic silverware, but there was none. I then went for a bite of the rice and it was so stuck together that I really had to jam my fork into it. It had no flavor at all and I was not offered any kind of sauce for it. I got some salt, but it didn't help. It had obviously been in a cup and turned over on a plate (there was no bowl) so I don't see why they couldn't have substituted the fried rice. The carrots were rubbery too. The only thing half way good was the broccoli. I opted for water to drink because I couldn't see paying over $6 for flavored ice tea. I didn't want my date to feel bad for buying me such a horrible meal, so I managed to get a couple of bites down. He asked if I wanted a box. No, but I said yes, again not wanting him to feel bad. I tried the Orange Chicken again when I got home, using my paring knife, and it was still so bad that I threw the whole thing away. There were only 6-8 people in the place, but it was so noisy that I had to keep asking my date to repeat what he said because I couldn't hear him. I was looking forward to a new place to eat and the online menu looked so great... How sad.

I normally do not like fried or grilled tofu but this was different. Nice crunch on the outside and super creamy on the inside. They have a pink sauce in little packets and it is really good on the crunchy tofu. Not too sweet and just the right flavor. I also had a mango green tea with Boba. Of course it was delicious just the right amount of mango but it was sweet. The second time I visited I tried the shrimp chow mein and the crunchy tofu again and I tried peach black tea with Boba. The tea was delicious and sweet but really nice. I'm not sure how you could make that horrible. The shrimp chow mein was just OK to me. The noodles seemed gummy and I'm not used to that. We also had the sautéed gyoza. The first batch came out burnt, but they were very nice and very accommodating when we brought them back and they brought us another order that was perfect and delicious. By the way we ordered vegetarian Gyoza and it was surprisingly good. I have also had the Ramen at this restaurant and it is also excellent . Many choices and they're really good about cooking what you need. This is not a fancy place but the food is great and the girls at the order desk are really sweet!

The wontons were small but the filling tasted good. The proteins in the soup consisted of chicken and shrimp. There was plenty of meat for sure. When I got this home, I found the container was 32 ounces filled to the brim. I added an avocado and lime juice to brighten the flavors but it was fine as is. It was one of the best valued wonton soups at under $10, considering the generous amount of ingredients in the soup. Highly recommended. I also ordered a Three Entree Combo meal. I had Orange Chicken, Mushroom Chicken, and BBQ Pork with sides of steamed rice and chow mein. The batter on the Orange Chicken was thick but it had a crispy crunch. Mushroom Chicken had mostly meat with just a few pieces of mushrooms and zucchini. BBQ Pork was seasoned well and tender with a few pieces of thick pork fat. These provided a textural contrast but are easily removed if desired. Not too sweet as well which is a plus. The ordered Veggie Egg Rolls were good with a ginger flavored filling.
