Extremely disappointing experience at Canto. Their website clearly states they open at 3 PM on Thursdays, and we even had a confirmed reservation for 3:15 PM. When we arrived on time, we were abruptly told to leave because they "weren't open yet" and that no bartender or server would be available until at least 3:30. It felt excessive to turn away guests with a confirmed reservation over a 15-minute discrepancy. We returned at 4 PM and explained the situation to the hostess, who dismissively responded, "the website isn't right," with no apology, accountability, or attempt to remedy the situation. Mistakes happen, but the lack of professionalism and customer service was far more frustrating than the scheduling error itself. If your hours have changed, update your website and reservation platform instead of making customers feel like they did something wrong. What makes this more disappointing is that I've actually been here before and recommended the restaurant specifically because their frozen espresso martinis are excellent. That previous positive experience is the only reason this review isn't lower. That said, service during this visit continued to miss the mark. The restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived before dinner service, yet we felt like we were inconveniencing the bartender every time we ordered another drink. We also ordered the bruschetta appetizer, which took over an hour to come out despite us being among the only customers there. I went to Canto for dinner on a Friday night. I would recommend making a reservation since the place is packed. I was actually impressed by how much seating they managed to fit into the space. They really optimized every inch. I tried their famous frozen espresso martini and loved it. It's almost like a tiramisu martini because they top it with mascarpone. They have a good happy hour deal, but unfortunately we weren't able to make it in time for it. For dinner, we ordered an arancini, carbonara, and a risotto from their specials. It is VERY tight quarters inside which was cute & cozy but quite loud. There are more bar seats available than tables and they were seating people with reservations at the bar. I came here late one evening with my friend and we were seated at the back bar facing the wall. The restaurant interior is cute but it was hard for us to see it. It took about 15 mins for someone to come to us to actually get our orders placed but once we placed them, the bread and wine came out pretty quickly! My friend and I shared the meatballs (8/10 - on the smaller side but good) which was a good addition with the free bread and I ordered the rigatoni e gamberi which was really good and the pasta was Al dente but definitely light on the sauce! My friend ordered the tortellini di carne which I tried but I liked mine better. I want to come back to try the frozen espresso martinis but I wasn't trying to drink that at 9PM! Sadly, this was the worst customer service I've experienced in a long time. Our host/server, Peralta, P., missed far too many basic steps of service. I made a reservation for five at 5:30 p.m. on a rainy Tuesday. I've been to both Canto locations several times and wanted to introduce two friends to the espresso martinis, which were excellent as always. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'll be returning. Service started off okay. A busser poured us tap water without asking if we wanted something else. The four of us ordered espresso martinis, then frozen Aperol spritzes (which none of us enjoyed), and several food items to share. We spent nearly $350 in under an hour. While the food was good, no one checked on us once to ask how everything was or if we needed anything. We had to flag someone down twice for more bread, and at one point our server began walking away before I'd even finished speaking. Our fifth friend arrived late because of severe thunderstorms and a long commute specifically to try this restaurant. That's when everything changed. We ordered another round of drinks, but instead of being offered dessert or asked if we wanted anything else, a busser silently dropped off the check while we were still waiting for our drinks. We assumed it was a dessert menu until we realized it was the bill. Since our last friend had just arrived and hadn't ordered yet, we set it aside, planning to continue ordering food, rounds of drinks and dessert. A few minutes later when our server walked up, she held her Toast handheld close to my face without saying a word, clearly indicating payment. When I explained that we would like to continue ordering, she replied with an attitude saying "We only allow for 120min seating times and you guys have been here for 135mins." I pointed out that this was never mentioned in my reservation confirmation email, text, at check-in, or at any point during service. Her response was, "Well that's the policy. And we weren't even supposed to seat you without your full party and we did anyways." Is that really how employees are trained to speak to guests? We understood there was a wait, so we didn't argue further. However, when we asked why identical drinks on our check had different prices, she explained that happy hour had ended while we were dining. That would have been completely understandable--if anyone had told us. We were only given happy hour drink menus, which didn't list the hours (as many restaurant happy "hours" are longer than one hour and at various times), and no one mentioned when happy hour ended, gave a last call, or replaced our happy hour menu with a regular one. We obviously never expected happy hour to last all night, but we did expect basic communication. That's deceiving and bad business practice. The most disappointing part wasn't the missed steps of service--it was the dismissive, unapologetic attitude and lack of accountability when concerns were brought up. When we asked to speak with a manager, we were told there wasn't one there. I didn't buy that, but either way, is unacceptable. There was never any help, apology, or attempt at accommodation offered. All five of us currently work or have worked as managers, bar managers, and lead servers at several major NYC restaurants, many in the same neighborhood as this place. We understand how stressful busy shifts can be and are always quick to give grace when service isn't perfect. We recognized that she had her hands full. Missing a few steps happens. Missing nearly all of them, then responding with attitude and refusing accountability, does not. We always tip generously as fellow industry workers, but this was one of the few times we questioned whether the service deserved it, and she's lucky she got one at all. read more

decided I had to get my hands on the frozen espresso martini at Canto and we all know I'm not paying full price - I love that they have this martini on their happy hour menu for $12. it is honestly so delicious. the cream on top freezes into a sort of ice cream consistency. love the three chocolate chips and how you can tell it's still strong despite being delicious - I also tried the regular espresso martini which was solid. you can pick vodka or tequila. it's definitely stronger, but the other one is tastier - they have such good truffle french fries. they have that like crispy layer on the outside and have such a good amount of truffle flavor. they would be brought to the next level if they came with an aïoli or if they did like a parmesean truffle layer on top. - after a few rounds of drinks, people got hungry and got the lasagna. it is definitely well-made and good quality. prices on the normal menu are high - our server was really nice, but they were absolutely swamped. we were told to move tables halfway through the service so they can make room for other people... and then they did kick us out. I think that they overbooked without considering they actually don't have room for people. everyone seems so stressed and our waitress even told us that there "was a situation going on." read more
