Norwich has quite a few hidden gems and this spot is definitely one of them. Fantastic Peruvian food served in a friendly, lively environment. We were a party of 5 reuniting for the first time in a while! Our friends from Montana were home for a visit. We were there for quite a bit! We ordered dishes and ate them family style as we talked and caught up. The perfect way to try a little of everything. The wait staff was so wonderful and kind. The cooks we could see and hear as the kitchen is open. They could also see and hear us as we oohed and aahed over all of the dishes and savored every bite. We were not the only party and we were not the only ones having a good time, so at least that night it was a little loud and lively. Overall, great spot with really good food and a fun vibe! If I could give this restaurant 6 stars I would! It's located on a quiet street in Norwich so eating outside, which is what we did, was wonderful on a warm evening. The food is AMAZING! Our waitress was AWESOME! There were GF options for some in our party which was a plus. Most of us had seafood (Coffee Crusted Salmon) but some had beef and they modified a dinner for our younger son. Appetizers were excellent - Yucca Frites (loved the dipping sauce) and Calamari. And the two drinks - nonalcoholic and the Strawberry Margarita, freshly made. We celebrated graduation with our family and the food, service and ambience were wonderful. Nestled near the Slater Museum at the Norwich Free Academy is found delightfuluL little Peruvian restaurant. We were a party of twelve seniors asking for separate checks and ordering from the full menu but had called for a lunch reservation. What could go wrong with that!? Everyone was very pleased with their lunch order and my table neighbor thought the mussels were the best. This restaurant was so cute and tasty. It was very cozy, but we were there on a Wednesday night and didn't have to wait at all. The restaurant was full, but there happened to be a free table or two. My husband and I shared the Chicken Chaufa and Lomo. They were both delicious! The only thing is we really wanted to order the Pollo a la Brasa, but apparently it's in such high demand that you have to call ahead to "reserve" it . Tried this restaurant today for the first time. holy cow. It was incredible. Hash browns with clams with over easy eggs. Super tasty margaritas. One friend had a steak sandwich that looked amazing. I had been hearing good thing about Canggio for months and I am sorry it took me so long to visit! We had a wonderful time from start to finish. We were so excited by the food that it was hard to rein my tablemates in long enough to take pictures. We started off with the complimentary canchitas (Peruvian popcorn) and quickly ordered multiple appetizers since so many were quite appealing: -calamari were perfectly fried. -chicharron consistency was slightly uneven: some were crisp while the others were a bit chewy, but the combination with the sweet potato wedges, red onion, salad, and sauces made for a delightful mouthful. Good portion size meant several mouthfuls even split amongst 5 people. -empanadas (2) were huge, juicy, flavorful, and the crust was just the right consistency. -wings (8 per flavor) were nicely done. Everyone *loved* the spiced dry rub (5/5 stars). The Inca Kola BBQ were slightly less popular (4/5 stars) but still quite good. For the main course, the other 4 split a cuban panini and Inca Kola BBQ Turkey BLT wrap. I enjoyed the zucchini goat cheese pasta immensely and the portion I took home was just as good the next day! The ratio of vegetable to cheese to pasta was well-balanced. Lastly, totally get a dessert. If you prefer a sweeter option, the chocolate banana cake comes in a huge slice great for sharing. Otherwise the picarones (pumpkin and sweet potato donuts) are also great for sharing but a more savory option. All in all, highly recommend and will be back! read more

Tired of eating at Mohegan Sun, so we ventured off to Norwich to this restaurant we found on YELP! Heather was a most pleasant server when we did not find the 1st salad to our liking she immediately offered up a substitute salad and that was the quinoa salad and delicious! We had the Pollo a la Brasa dinner and wrap. The best roast chicken and amazing crispy fries and a small salad for $9 for a 1/4 chicken! Heather also told us about a purple corn non alcoholic drink called Chicha Morrada and it was laced with hints of cinnamon and also delicious! We'll come back next time we're in the area! Canggio was awesome. I came in on a whim after seeing that this place just opened in Norwich, and I am glad I did. The ambiance is perfect for a date night or a casual meal, and after tonight's experience Canggio is solidly in my rotation for both dining-in and takeout. Our waiter Kyle suggested some great starters. We had the jalea (like a seafood sampler), and the Spanish mussels. The broth that the mussels rested in was so outstanding we had to order up some more bread to finish it off. We also tried the Peruvian wings, the lomo (steak, string potatoes, rice, fried egg), and the ceviche. The ceviche was... wow. I was not expecting it to be so flavorful. We also tried this ridiculous blue corn and cinnamon drink that was a perfect way to finish the meal. The portions were generous, the service was extremely attentive... it was a beautiful surprise. There was absolutely no room for dessert, but if there was, we would have been all over the pumpkin and sweet potato donuts. There were so many good choices to make, it was hard to go wrong. What an awesome menu. When it was all said and done, we were all so pleased with the meal that we asked if the chef could meet us for a quick hello. That's when we met Julio, the master in the kitchen. It is his first venture, but it turns out he ran one of Hartford's best joints for many years. He was the real star for me; you could see that he was passionate about food, and also interested in revitalizing Norwich. I loved it. One of the most exceptional restaurant experiences I've ever been at-- DO NOT MISS THIS!! Our server, Kyle, was so wonderful and I don't know that I've had better service elsewhere. Kyle went out of his way to be friendly, introduce menu items, give us free samples of the Peruvian drinks, he even held the door when we were leaving! This place is a MUST! Visited this location after apple picking at an orchard nearby. Driving up to the location, you do not know what to think by the area it is in. This place was amazing - love the atmosphere and it felt like viaiting family. All the service was friendly and amazing. We called ahead to see if we needed reservations for 6 - we did not - but they reserved the table for us anyway. Upon entering we were greeted warmly and sat immediately. Food was very authentic (after having abundance of spanish food in NY), and tasted incredible. It was so amazing, I completely forgot to take photos, which is very rare. For appetizers between my wife, best friend, his fiance, my kids and I - we ordered ceviche, chicharron and chicharron de Pescado. We devoured everything! Lomo Saltado for entree was really good - the meat/beef was big and very tender compared to how it is typically served. The rice was a little left to be desired (tasted more like box rice), but the main parts of the meal were great. The arroz Chaufa was like a shrimp fried rice and tasted delicious. Last but not least, the server Norma was fantastic - answered all our questions, explained options for us, kept checking on us and was super friendly while providing great service. I observed another table of 2 ask her about 35 questions on the menu and kept calling her back and she never lost her patience and was smiling and friendly the whole time. As a long-term chef, I decided to attempt brunch as a first visit, as most restaurants lay out a variety of breakfast/dinner samples, albeit on a lower price scale. Although I plan on another visit, there were many ups but very few shortcomings. I arrived about noon with just three tables in attendance... additional patrons came later upon my departure. It was not too busy on a Sunday morning. I ordered two brunch samples (mostly to experiment as much as I could, and to take home the balance): hash/eggs, and stuffed french toast (and a De Chanco sandwich to savor later). The hash was not noteworthy nor presentable as a flat 1/2 inch hodge-podge pancake of clam bits mixed with corn beef (?) diced potatoes, and some spices, yet still somewhat bland. I had to add salt/pepper to kick the taste. It was dutifully fried, but needed a gravy or some moisture--perhaps the 2 eggs I ordered? Or beef stock? Perhaps bacon bits? (it did not come with the eggs/toast as I ordered, but delivered as a side-dish). It was delivered not cold/hot, but warm. I was hoping for a mound or structure of hash, perhaps with a light touch of brown sauce, red wine, or Worcestershire mixed in? (I'm from Ireland after all). The filled French Toast did not disappoint. It presented well as three 1/2" toast points with runny yet velvety cream cheese sandwiched therein. A bevy of sliced strawberries and powdered sugar, whipped cream, as well as a circular thin drizzle of chocolate around the plate's edging, volunteered a more welcome presentation. It, too, was presented "warm." The offered maple syrup helped to complement the taste. The De Chanco sandwich--which I took home-- needs to be eaten fresh at the restaurant, as while it was tasty, its sauce of aji verde and salsa ran into the brioche roll. The accompanying fries were sizable, yet soggy. The pork bellies were not crisp as advertised (more like soggy bacon). I think the sandwich was pained for being in its plastic container far too long--again, due to its tastiness, eat this directly in the restaurant for its superb combination of flavors. My waitress, Jillian, was ever-mindful, but not intrusively so. She initially offered her personal view of favorites (much appreciated, as I wanted her panorama of Peruvian dishes). While not delivering the full compliment of my order, she significantly made up for it in her scrupulous timing, super-friendly manner, and offering of coffee, etc. There was a minor difficulty with the final check (customer can pay at the table via a scanned online payment, which did not work). But Jillian thankfully interceded and helped with the final payment. Some issues: - outdoor parking is at a premium, both a small number of curbside spaces (5?) in front, and available parking after hours across due to the friendly generosity of a dental establishment. - This restaurant is--for lack of better words--an "Americanized" version of Peruvian selections. Having traveled abroad, I was hoping for a better array of actual nativist dishes, such as Gallina (chicken); Papa Huancaina (cheesy potato sauce); Roccoto Relieno (stuffed pepper); or Juane (rice mixed with meats, eggs and other spices wrapped in leaves). But they do offer a welcome version of Loma (steak), Ceviche (white fish), and Causa (layered potato cake)--which I aim to definitely experience on my next visit with others. - I might add that the restaurant introduce a couple of brunch entrees taken from the dinner menu as a lead-in for continued visits from customers (like the Loma, for ex); - on my next visit I would yearn to see table linen--with complete accouterments--to reflect the food quality and pricing, and not have the balance of my meal (to be brought home) to reside on top of my dining table (with its possible bacteria on its bottom) in a large brown paper bag for all to see that merely holds a small container--best if the bag was left on an empty chair alongside...or just place the small container. - the open kitchen intrudes slightly into the patron area, and its background fan noise and warmth harasses the wonderful Latin music and chatter that transcends the restaurant. I would rate a B+ read more

We had read about Canggio before coming. We were here from out of state and wanted some place away from our inn for breakfast/brunch! This restaurant simply doesn't disappoint. It's cozy, cute inside and the service was impeccable. But the food...simply outstanding! Lots of choices with their personal twist on everything. My frittata was delicious and the arugula and lemon dressing simply added to it. My husband's stuffed French toast was outstanding, chock full of filling and covered with strawberries. I saw waffles go by that were as big as your head and more than an inch thick. There's a wide variety of mimosas and Bloody Mary's available but they also have a full bar. I tried the chicken and it was full of flavor, and I got the arugula salad with salmon, they had run out of arugula but used different greens and it was still delicious. Good food and good service. They're cash-only, contrary to their listings online, and tell you when you get there before you sit down. There's a sign that says it's due to a technical issue, but they have a Clover POS system running and an ATM installed .
