We stumbled onto Canggio the way I usually find a good meal on the road -- via Yelp -- and I mean that literally. We were camping nearby in eastern Connecticut when a rainy evening pushed us off the campsite and toward something warm and worthwhile. Canggio was at the top of the list. The restaurant occupies a modest but comfortable space on Lafayette Street in Norwich. We sat at the small bar, which ended up being exactly the right call. That night we were the only bar guests who weren't grabbing takeout, which meant we had the staff's full attention. Small bar, attentive service -- a combination I always appreciate. We shared the mussels to start, and they were genuinely unlike any version I've had before -- in the best possible way. Rather than the standard white wine and herb preparation you find everywhere, these arrived in a rich, layered broth alongside Peruvian bread that was made for soaking. My partner made a meal of the empanada and the Canggio Ensalada together -- chicken, aji verde, and Kalamata aioli in the first, mixed greens with pear, goat cheese, candied walnut, and balsamic in the second. She was happy with both. On the owner's recommendation I went with the Pollo a la Brasa, quarter chicken, dark meat. It was the right call. The chicken is a family recipe, slow roasted, and it showed -- the kind of dish that's simple on the surface but takes real discipline to execute consistently. Tender throughout, well-seasoned, with an aji verde I kept coming back to. What pushed this from a very good dinner to a memorable one was the owner himself. He took time at the bar to talk with us about the food, the concept, what we'd thought of the meal. On the way out we made a point of stopping at the open kitchen to thank the chef directly. That combination of genuine hospitality and cooking with a real point of view is exactly what I'm looking for when I travel. I'll be back the next time I am in the area, and I'd recommend Canggio to anyone who leave nearby or is willing to make the drive to Norwich. Five stars. read more

For the first time in a long time, we had the best dining experience. Everything at this restaurant was great! The food was really good, and the portions and prices very reasonable. My husband had the grilled octopus, said the best he has had, 2 diners had the Paella, full dishes of seafood, I had the pesto pasta with shrimp, so good. The wait staff was so nice. We had a mother daughter team who were the best!! Ordered coffee and dessert that took a little bit of time being served and our waitress comped the coffee and desert because it took longer than it should have. How is that for service!! We were very impressed and are already planning our next visit. read more

Excellent tasting food. Very well presented. Staff is friendly, funny and eager to please you. Beautiful location.

If you're anywhere near Mohegan Sun & craving something truly unforgettable, do yourself a favor & check out Canggio Restaurant in Norwich. This hidden gem is serving up bold, vibrant Peruvian cuisine that will leave your taste buds doing a happy dance. I started off with a delicious papaya passionfruit jalapeño margarita. It was the perfect balance of tropical sweetness & just the right kick of heat. It's the kind of cocktail that makes you pause after the first sip and say, "Wow." Whenever I see ceviche on the menu, I almost always order it but especially at a Peruvian restaurant. This version featured Baramundi fish, lime juice, cilantro, onions, sweet potato chips, leche de tigre, rococo. There was a ton of fish, it was firm & super fresh, just the right amount of acidity, a little bite from the fresh red onion... put it all together on a warm sweet potato chip & it was the perfect bite! Note: The warm sweet potato chips were so awesome, we just had to have more! The chips were crunchy & slightly sweet, the perfect combo for the cool citrusy ceviche. On the recommendation of our lovely server, we then opted for the Spanish mussels with fresh herbs, tomato, onion, fennel, garlic, white wine & cream reduction, topped with toasted baguette slices. There were a good amount mussels nestled in a rich, creamy sauce that had us practically licking the bowl (no shame in our mussels game). By then, we were almost full but the next course was Pollo a la Brasa: family recipe for slow roasted chicken, fries, garden salad & aji verde. The chicken was tender, flavorful & perfectly charred - simple but perfectly executed. The sauce was a vibrant, herby green sauce that I would happily slather on everything. The ambiance is cozy yet contemporary, the service is attentive without being overbearing & every dish that came out of the kitchen had us planning our next visit before we even finished our meal. As a wife of an Army veteran, we were both touched by the missing man table - a table set in honor of fallen, missing or imprisoned military service members So if you are at Mohegan Sun & want to venture beyond the usual options, Canggio is 100% worth the short drive. Make a reservation, thank me later! Highly recommend. read more

Went last night for an early dinner around 530. We had made reservations a week or so ago but there were free tables so you probably could just walk in as well. The place is super cute and decorate well! It's clean and a everyone was so nice and attentive which made for a really welcoming environment. I really wanted to love the food but my Italo Peruano was way too spicy when the description on the menu/the ingredients listed didn't indicate anything that would give it that much heat. Also the steak was cut very large for being served in a pasta dish and in a bowl where it was very difficult to cut it. The Lomo was good but too salty. The dessert we shared however was amazing! We got the churros which came with chocolate sauce, strawberry puree and Lucuma ice cream! They told us it was a South American fruit! It's hard to describe the flavor but it was awesome! Kind of like a caramel/butterscotch with notes of sweet potato and maple syrup! It doesn't sound like it would all work together but it absolutely does! Overall we had a good experience and would be totally willing to come try the food again next time we are in the area! read more

Canggio, located in a neighborhood in Norwich near Backus Hospital that's not usually known for modestly upscale dining options, is a cozy restaurant serving tasty, freshly made-to-order modern Japanese-inspired Peruvian cuisine served by friendly, helpful waitstaff. Inspired by the overwhelmingly positive Yelp reviews, my dining companion and I stopped into Canggio for dinner on a recent Saturday night before a show at the Mohegan Sun. The restaurant is located in a mostly residential neighborhood, so we were not entirely sure what to expect. It was a very positive sign that the restaurant was completely filled with a combination of folks grabbing dinner before heading over to the show and locals enjoying a tasty dinner out. Despite a packed house and being short a server, our server was very friendly and she took the time to offer some terrific suggestions for dinner. Even with an open kitchen and dining area (and a large table of 12-15 diners sitting at a table adjacent to us), the noise level in the restaurant was manageable and it was easy to converse with my dining companion without straining our voices. With so many appealing appetizer and entree options on the menu, my dining companion and I decided to split two appetizers and an entree. We shared the YuccaFrita ($12), a shareable portion of fried yucca served with shredded lettuce and a piquant Aji Verde sauce; the Ceviche($18), comprised of a shareable portion of white fish served in a sauce with lime cilantro, onions, celery, and salsa criolla, and topped with homemade potato chips; and the Aymara($30), a broiled Peruvian COFFEE-crusted (!) salmon filet and several pieces of broiled asparagus served atop a bed of spinach mashed potato. Everything we ordered was OUTSTANDING. It was obvious that all of our dishes were made with fresh, tasty ingredients and prepared with care and served quickly by the disciplined but friendly staff. We will DEFINITELY be back next time we're in the area. PRO TIP #1: Canggio doesn't have a private parking lot, but there is plenty of on-street parking off Lafayette Street. Leave your coins at home.. there are no parking meters. PRO TIP #2: Canggio has a full bar offering both Peruvian and mass-market brands of beer (bottle, can, and draft), wine, and cocktails PRO TIP #3: Reservations for Conggio are available on OpenTable.com. read more

Last minute decision and we stopped by Canggio on Sunday evening. We didn't know how close to closing they were, and we felt bad so we wanted to leave. The staff insisted we stay and were extremely nice. The place got a nice update, it looks great. I love the colors and light all over. The food was great. We decided to try a few new things. We tried the trio with Ceviche, papa a la huancaina, la Causa Salad. We loved the shrimp fried rice and their Cuban. We will definitely be back with a group of friends. read more

We were curious about this Peruvian Japanese place near a concert venue. We stopped in to find that it was in a former deli and has the charming icebox that's been in the building for more than 100 years. They were out of a couple of items on the menu which wasn't too much of an imposition. We opted for a salad and the Peruvian paella. Portions were large and much to our surprise we struggled to finish everything. Tasty food, but a bit too salty for me. Peruvian beer is delicious! We would come back again to check out more menu items. read more

After a long day exploring Newport, Rhode Island, and visiting Mohegan Sun, we decided to try something different and ended up at Canggio--and we're so glad we did! We started with the potato croquettes and empanadas, then enjoyed the seafood paella, roasted chicken, and salmon. Every dish was outstanding, fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. We couldn't leave without dessert, and we're so glad we didn't! The flan and churros with ice cream were absolutely delicious and the perfect ending to an amazing meal. What made the experience even more memorable was the exceptional staff. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm, friendly smiles and made to feel welcome. Everyone was attentive, kind, and genuinely happy to make our dining experience special. The food was fresh, made to order, and full of authentic flavor. We can't wait to visit their new location in Centerbrook, and we'll definitely be recommending Canggio to all of our friends! read more

We happened to find Canggio on Yelp, after being at the Mohegan Sun and wanting to eat elsewhere. The food was amazing. I had the steak with tomatoes and rice, seasoned with garlic. The steak was as tender as I've had in any steakhouse. The seasoning was perfect. Dinner was topped off with their churros, which come filled and with ice cream. They were super. I had the flan which was among the best I've ever had. The chef came by and we had a very enjoyable talk with him. The icing on the cake was our waitress Jillian. She was so friendly and helpful. She was attentive and had a great personality. The empanadas are a must and the papa Rellano is something different worth ordering. The lomo is superb. For the love of god, get the homemade flan. The whole experience was excellent! Our waitress was wonderful, attentive, very friendly and gave great recommendations. The atmosphere was unique and full of character. The food was amazing--so flavorful and truly unique. I started with the Andes salad, which was unlike any ordinary salad. For my entrée, I had the Ocopa. I have a gluten allergy, and they were happy to make it over rice, which I really appreciated. It was absolutely delicious, with so many interesting flavors. I'm already looking forward to eating here again! read more

It was pretty late by the time my friends and I got here, so there weren't that many people in the restaurant. The waitress was the bartender, and she was very nice. I got the Sangria, it wasn't too sweet, and it had the perfect mix of fruit and wine flavor. Chicharron: The pork belly was really crisp and juicy. Yucca: Way better than fried baked potatoes. If you haven't tried yucca, I highly recommend to try this to ease into the main dish. Chorrillana: The octopus was cooked very well. It wasn't too chewy. However, I thought the portion was pretty small. I was not full. The sauce and everything were very delicious. Creme Brulee: It wasn't too sweet and very flavorful. I just wish there was more crisp on the caramelized sugar. There is only two parking spots in front of the restaurant, but there are more seats inside, so I suggest either getting lucky or find a parking spot somewhere else on the street. read more

Located in a relatively quiet area, this hidden gem suddenly pops out to you as you're driving by. Very relaxing & smooth ambiance as you walk in. Cute space with a lot of character and authenticity to give you a lovely Peruvian feel. Very kind, charming & attentive staff and also extremely helpful with navigating through their very authentic menu. And now... the food!! Empanadas Careful they're hot! Two standard size empanadas with a very rich & flavorful chicken tomato filling. Comes with two different dipping sauces. I'll leave it to you to decide which one you like best. I certainly enjoyed the green cilantro based on. Seco Was torn between the Seco & the Lomo for my entrée. Ultimately what sold it was that Seco is a traditional Peruvian stew and for me, stews in the Fall are the best. Served to you in a clay pot, you are suddenly taken by both the generous portion and the heavenly aroma of spices & flavors sizzling from the pot. Delicious pairings of herbs & spices with steak, rice, beans, red peppers & potatoes sitting in an exquisite and tasty broth. Picarones She had me at Donuts! But these were not just any mere donuts. Mini pumpkin & sweet potato donuts with a fruity orange spiced syrup. Pair that with a nice cup of hot coffee, and the feast ended at an extreme high. So if you're ever in the area and looking for an authentic Peruvian culinary experience, I highly recommend this wonderful little gem of a read more

Mother's day brunch today was perfection. Started with passion fruit and pineapple mimosas. No stingy portions like some places. They were delicious and refreshing. Extra staff on for the busy day and everyone worked together. We opted out on coffee but could see the frequent refills all around us and water glasses were replenishee when we needed. Mom and I both loved the saffron risotto with scallops and lobster cream. Decadent and cooked to perfection. The lobster cream was as rich and creamy as could be. I will look for this combo again! My husband opted for prime rib and mashed because he's been craving it and it came with a full-flavored mushroom demi-glace and asparagus. No leftovers for any of us because it was just too good to not finish! Thank you for such a delightful meal! Can't wait to come back soon for your mussels ! read more

What a hidden gem! Fabulous food, outstanding service, delicious drinks, and great atmosphere. Our first visit was for brunch on Father's Day. My husband and I ordered the Bloody Mary Del Mar. it was a perfectly mixed house made Bloody Mary mix topped with extremely fresh Oyster, shrimp and ceviche, meal in itself. My daughter chose a peach mimosa. I normally avoid these as they are generally overly sweet. This was not, it was delicious. For our entrees I chose the Peru Frittata. It was perfectly cooked an flavorful and large enough for me to enjoy the next day. My daughter chose eggs bene. The eggs were perfect and the sauce had just the right amount of lemon. The bread was crisp, not mushy. The guest of honor, my husband chose two eggs over easy over clam hash, with a side of spicy home fries. He said it was great. So glad we found Canngio. We are adding it to our list of go to spots. read more

This is a local restaurant for me. We have gone for dinner several times, and for brunch as well and breakfast.... When I tell you that this place is really a magical place...You have got to take my word for it. The owners are amazing... The food is fabulous and the drinks are great as well. We wanted to order a certain dessert, but unfortunately , they didn't have any more of that particular item... The chef prepared a special dessert for us on the house. The Churros...OMG, the chocolate cake, the molten cake, the cheesecake, truly spectacular. And I haven't even spoken about the meal....apps are great, calamari, wings, ceviche, empanada, I had a tuna app that was so fresh and delicious, and a goat cheese WALNUT salad that was GINORMOUS and so good. Hubby had the steak, another guest had the Paella that was phenomenal! Seriously do not sleep on Norwich, CT... this is a GREAT SPOT all around ... Sorry I didn't take pictures of the appetizers and the meal.... But this is a picture of the dessert that the chef made for us... And was on the house. A hidden gem.... DON'T MISS OUT!!! read more

During our family trip to CT. We wanted to have breakfast and looked at Yelp for recommendations. This one had I think 5 s. I can see why! It's a nice place but a tad warm in there. I think it's because of the open kitchen. You can see the ‍ making the dishes. What really caught my eye was the missing man table. Wow! Made me feel proud to see that displayed. Now the food. They were beautifully presented and delicious. I ordered the lox and enjoyed it. It's not the best I've had but was good. My husband ordered the BYOO. The omelette had ham, cheddar, mushrooms, and bacon. He said that the bacon really stood out to him. Sounded like a compliment. Lol. Both of these dishes came with potatoes. They were very delicious. So savory and the right amount of crusting. Daughter had the Nutella with fruit crepe. She loves it but by the end, it was too much sweetness so she took my husbands side of potatoes. Son ordered the stuffed French toast. He was disappointed to see fruit over it. Typical 19 year old but he ate all of it quick. It was stuffed with cream cheese and he added syrup over it. For a guy that was disappointed about the fruit, he ate every single bite. We were the only ones there when we got there but by the time we left, it was a full house. Would definitely come back to try other items on the menu. read more

This was our 2nd time for brunch on a Sunday. The food was excellent. The staff outstanding. The only complaint would be it was chilly inside today but the temps have been so low outside. Prices are very reasonable. Last time I got an omelet (you get to choose 4 fillings for the base price), my daughter go the stuffed French toast, and my son got the eggs and toast breakfast with home fries and bacon. This time I again got the omelet as it was exceptional. Daughter got the Benedict and son got the stuffed French toast. Everything was fantastic both times. Fresh and definitely all made in house. The wait staff is so attentive and warm and hospitable. We will continue to go again and again. I have been a couple of times for dinner as well. I always get the half a chicken. Authentic Peruvian at a very reasonable price. The owner/chef is the real deal. This is not Americanized Peruvian food. Even the bar carries Japanese vodka and whiskey's influenced by the Japanese culture and history within Peru. The bartender was kind and conversational, and made me a phenomenal Mezcal martini. I had ceviche for a starter, which was authentic as it gets. For anyone who is a Ceviche connoisseur they know it differs from country to country. and my entrée was equally good.
