Water fountain in Flint, Michigan? Nope! World's largest chocolate waterfall.
Glen N.

The first stop of Day 2 of an epic road trip across the I-84, the roadside attraction candy store seemed tiny for an outlet store, but the appeal is the World's Largest Chocolate Waterfall. Don't get all Augustus Sloop on me because it's nothing like Willy Wonka-- it feels more like a water fountain in an old mall in Flint, Michigan-- but it's a cool photo op nonetheless.

This place is deceiving from the outside: huge on the outside but super tiny store. It's mostly regular priced taffy and chocolates with a tiny section of "oops" chocolates. Not really much of an outlet. The giant chocolate fountain was a neat touch in the entrance but it this place wasn't right next to where we were staying, I would've been mad for wasting the gas to get here. Honestly, you're better off just grabbing something while you're out and about in the city. WARNING: The taffy flavors are great but do NOT chew them cold or room temperature; I know if I had dental work the first one would've pulled it right out of my mouth. That being said, the hot cinnamon flavor was excellent- but do yourself a favor and warm it in your mouth before you try to chew. Just trust me on this one!

Beware! Over half the items I looked at had partially hydrogenated oils within the top 5 ingredients! NYC has banned the use of this chemical yet this Portland company uses it liberally? For shame! Otherwise, staff was friendly and fountain was ok but overall seems like they can't decide between bring a factory, an office, and a store. The store seems almost like an afterthought. From outside, I almost didn't go in because it looked like a wholesale only kind of place. Go to Moonstruck instead.

The Chocolate Waterfall is not working! There is NO estimated time of repair. :( This shop is located on the outskirts of Portland, close to the freeway and with plenty of parking. The mechanism for the 20 foot Waterfall is right at the entrance. Even though it's not working, it is interesting to look at, not to mention finding all the chocolate splatters on the walls and ceiling. Now that the Waterfall can't steal the show, if it were me, I would decorate the heck out of this place. It is far too drab for a candy shop! The shop is quite spacious so don't be afraid to wander to the back corner where the discount "Oops" candy is. I have to say I was a little weary trying their confections by the simplicity of the shop and how inexpensive the "Oops" containers were. $4.75 for 8 oz.?! I asked what was wrong with them and the super sweet saleslady said they were imperfect. I thought they looked perfectly imperfect--nothing majorly wrong in appearance to me! Oops they tasted so good! What I recommend: Molasses Chips--I have never seen anything like this, they are amazing! They are similar to toffee but with real molasses flavor. Valencia Ganache Truffle--real orange flavoring mixed into dark chocolate, super rich and satisfying. Fleur de Sel Salted Caramel--I really don't have to explain this, it's a big trend now. I came for the Waterfall but left with amazing chocolate!

Inside the medieval ramparts of ancient Bruges in Belgium, small crowds press into the cramped shops of world renowned chocolate confectionaries. Some people, like wine aficionados, take chocolate tasting very seriously. I'm pretty sure they don't have a Candy Basket outlet in Bruges - it's more of a Rockwood sort of thing. The Candy Basket is actually an outlet store attached to the Shorthill Taffy factory, where between sixty and seventy candy makers work in a windowless industrial building churning out all manner of sweet confections. What would have been the front office and reception area, had the building been occupied by a metal stamping company, is the Candy Basket store. I felt like I should be carrying a lunchbox and a timecard as I entered the featureless building - featureless except for two wooden nutcracker sentries standing on both sides, and the "The Candy Basket" sign above, the door. Inside, a molten chocolate river falls from a slit in the wall and drips down a sheet metal object, I think is supposed to look like a big candy or maybe a cake. It's called the "Chocolate Cascade" and there is a sign warning visitors not to eat from it - this they didn't need to tell me. The store is very matter-of-fact; acoustic ceiling, rows of industrial strength fluorescent lights, well worn indoor-outdoor carpet, and racks upon racks of candy. There are sampler boxes, gift packs and baskets. There is peanut brittle, taffy, jelly, gummy, marshmallow, and "oops" - candy that isn't perfect. The glass counter holds the good stuff - newly minted nuggets, creams, truffles, fudges and chocolate covered jellies. The wall behind the counter is lined with glass jars of jelly beans and other jelly and gummy candies. They offer sugar free candy as well. The young folks working the store are knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. I bought a bag full of chocolate creams, chocolate covered jellies, and Asian pear juicy jells. To be sure, it's factory candy, and doesn't compare favorably with the fine and ancient family shops in Bruges, and the store itself could use the services of an interior decorator, but the candy is pretty good, and I don't think there is a kid alive that wouldn't love the place. It's an honest place, making an honest product, and there's a lot to be said for that.

Came to check out the fountain. Fell in love with their white chocolate sea foam. Omg so good, it's supernaturally good. Caramels were a+++++ too.

Inside is bright, with sherbet colored green walls, lots of shelves and tables stocked with beautifully wrapped candy, gift assortments, boxes of chocolates, novelty candy, gummies, lollipop, and even candy from around the world, including a large variety of Asian candies. For those wanting just an individual piece of chocolate or wanting to create a custom purchase, the counter holds individual pieces of a variety of chocolates. They have all the usual suspects - truffles, salted chocolate caramels, chocolate with nuts, cream filled and more. It was October, so there was a section dedicated to fall colors and Halloween, with candy coming in black cat boxes, candy that resembles an eyeball, witch, ghost, and of course, candy corn. Never understood the appeal of candy corn, you either love it or avoid it, but it's definitely representative of the season. Candy here is priced high, so it's more like a treat or gift, not an everyday purchase. Personally, I think they would be more profitable if they had a broader price range so it could be the candy store you always purchase something from while at the mall.

As many have said before, this place is pretty spendy but the stuff they sell all tastes delicious…read more It's always fun to window shop and ask about their products. The staff seemed extremely friendly and down-to-earth while having a lot of good suggestions on what would best fit our tastes. Cherry cordials, pear cordials, apple cordials in chocolates. Caramel chocolates, chocolate caramels. Thing is it's hard for not to love the store because it has three of my favorite things: 1. chocolate: shelves and shelves of unique artisan chocolates made with skill and care from all over the world. 2. And salt -- am a VERY big fan of picking up local salts whenever one is traveling -- including actual blocks and blocks of Himalayan salt stacked. Not imitation but the real stuff. They even have fresh popcorn for you to taste the truffle salt with. 3. Lastly they have fresh cut flowers. It's like a florist and you can create your own bouquets. Beautiful specimens with structure and freshness. I have to say they also have bottles and bottles of bitters -- crafted bitters. King Floyd chief among them. The staff person was super helpful. She was kind and educational about many things.

I've purchased some of the Maldonado finishing salt, and it absolutely makes a difference. Never use these salts as an ingredient, it's used to sprinkle on meats, veggies, potatoes, right before serving. Awesome on chocolate cookies. They even sell small containers for salt, known as salt cellars, so you can keep your favorite salt in your purse in case your restaurant meal is lacking that little something extra. They refill for life, for the tiny ones only. I enjoy checking out this store when I'm in the area or when looking for a gift for one of my foodie friends. I'd buy more, but the prices are very high, especially the pasta and chocolate. I can't rationalize $12-15 for a chocolate bar that I'll eat in one sitting. Maybe I'm the problem, maybe one bar is supposed to last for many servings!
