Candlelight is the quintessential, family friendly, no-frills Long Island diner. The owner is really kind and attentive to all of the guests, and the waitress Dolores is such a sweetheart! There's a lot of space to sit inside, and no matter when we've gone there has never been a wait. Their menu is huge, so the downside of such variety is that some things aren't very good. The macaroni and cheese was much too gloppy, the BBQ pulled pork sandwich very heavy, and the chicken Alfredo penne was covered in cheese with not enough sauce. That being said... there are other things on the menu that are delicious, like the turkey club, gyro, cinnamon raisin French toast, and ESPECIALLY the Amish chicken salad sandwich. Amazing first time experience!! My boyfriend and I really wanted to try something that not only felt nostalgic but tasted amazing too, and what's more nostalgic than a good diner? I usually go to Peter Pan Diner, but since they have closed I've been trying to venture out. This place was pretty close and seemed like my type of vibe. I've seen comments of it being "outdated" in my opinion that "outdated" look is what I look for in a Diner. I don't want new age modern diner looks... it just doesn't hit the same. So for me, this is perfect. Service was amazing and our waitress was lovable, warm, and very attentive. I believe her name was marry-- I can't remember but it started with an M LOL. anyway, very nice and kind. Food came out exceptionally fast but yet tasted so good and fresh??? Plates themselves weren't hot meaning it wasn't microwaved lol My boyfriend got the pastrami sandwich I got pancakes. I've been craving pancakes for a week and when I crave I WANT IT AND I WANT IT GOOD, and they were AMAZINGGG! Nice and big with such a soft center and a nice tiny crust on the outside. Like cartoon pancakes. My boyfriend's sandwich came out to perfection-- and tbh pastrami is usually a hard eat (for us) in places bc it's never really made as well but they nailed the flavor profile as well as texture. After having great experiences for years I had to come to review after the last few visits. The time before last they messed up my order. I took it home and realized it after. I called of course and let them know. There wasn't even an apology from the manager. It was more of lemme get rid of this customer and off the phone. This evening was even worse. We dined in and my father ordered something from the dinner specials $22,99 or something like that. He pointed to the menu while ordering. The waitress seemed to understand and didn't come back once after delivering the dinner. The busboy came to clear everything and actually asked us to pass the plates to him. It was comical. Now the hill is finally dropped and my dad's dinner says $34.95. A mistake of course so we go to clear it up. Nope. Even though the waitress got it wrong, we had to pay for her mistake because my father didn't realize it and didn't send it back. This isn't customer service whatsoever. What should have happened was the manager took care of it since it wasn't what we ordered. No good. Don't think I will return because of the poor management. read more

The broccoli was boring and wet. The house salad was cold and I knew the waiter pulled it from the refrigerator. I didn't eat all of it. I attempted to eat all but three pieces of the chicken. I dogged-bagged the rest, bringing it home adding my own seasoning. Maybe it was a bad night for the cook. My friend girl didn't complain about her chicken salad. Then again I didn't ask her. This is hands down the best destination for late night quality food. Any time for that matter, plus it's on a budget! Go for the eggs Benedict, the hollandaise sauce is made to perfection. Making it correctly is a lost art these days. They must've trained with ninjas in the Himalayas or something. Covid19 great find! Outdoor dining, new tables and umbrellas, plants, protection and a lovely water pond. We stopped in for breakfast, and it was fantastic. They are all geared up with face and hands covered, continuous cleaning and attention to detail. Very welcoming and warm reception from the hostess. Service was excellent. Waitress was happy. It makes a difference because it's authentic. A fresh outdoor menu also. I had the Grecian Avocado Toast topped with poached eggs. Wonderful! He had BLT, fries and coleslaw. He gave it a 10. BLT is his litmus test for all diners! To the smart ownership at this diner- thank you for smartly investing your money to pivot during this crisis. For an island, there are very few outdoor spots. I don't remember my visit date most likely it was towards the end of August 2017. We were with my husband's uncle who had helped us try to do some Eastern healing on my mom while she was in the hospital. We decided to stop here for dinner before we bought his uncle home. I liked my experience here. I have a funny story that I will get to in a minute and the wait staff and management were friendly about our son running around the place while either my husband or I chased after him so the other one of us could eat our food. The omelette I had was pretty good as well. The staff was friendly enough they were charmed by my toddler. They gave us a good assortment of bread in our bread basket but because I am avoiding a huge amount of carbs unless I'm having a rare cheat day I didn't indulge in any of the bread. But it was the craziest bread basket I've ever seen in a good way. My funny story which has nothing to do with the dinner was that I was in the lobby letting my son play with the quarter toy machines (one small thing to be grateful for is he is too young to badger me for quarters to get the toys inside) and I was chatting with a man who was waiting in the lobby when we walked in. I thought he was the diner manager. It turns out he was waiting for a date who stood him up. After some time he told me if his date came by to tell her he had left and wasn't waiting for her and he expressed some anger because he came all the way from Queens to meet her. I told him I was sorry even though this wasn't my fault and made my husband and his uncle laugh when I came back to the table and told them what happened. I did feel bad for the guy. read more

My kids and I have been doing the "Long Island Diner Challenge" where we go exercise on Saturday mornings early, and our reward is a nice breakfast at one of the many, many diners on Long Island to find out which one is the absolute best. So far we've managed to hit about 6 or so, and Candlelight was next on the list for today. We pulled in around 730am and I thought the place was closed. We essentially owned the place, because nobody was in there. My kids wanted to sit up and the counter and there were two super pleasant ladies working there who greeted my kids and I very warmly. The menu is typical diner fare for breakfast.....and they have a separate breakfast specials menu. My kids and I aren't hard to please, generally between the three of us, it's chocolate chip pancakes, Challah bread french toast, and two egg platter, eggs over medium with wheat toast & home fries. Besides that, we get coffee (for me) and orange juice and apple juice. It's pretty darn simple. First off, the service here was fantastic. I didn't catch the ladies name who was working behind the counter, but she had bionic hearing and took care of every little thing we needed. Half n half for my coffee, extra syrup, napkins, more coffee, our orders, you name it, she was on it. She really made my kids feel super comfortable, which is not the easiest thing to do. The food came out within 5 minutes, which is always amazing to me, but hey, we're not ordering anything too complicated. The food was good. My kids loved their meals. My eggs were cooked perfectly, and the wheat toast was also good. I got ham with my eggs, but this is probably the only thing I didn't like too much. Ham had a funny taste, and didn't look grilled. Should have stuck with bacon. However, this is just a nitpick, in all honestly. With tip, we spent about $45 for the three of us, which is a bit pricey for the three of us. I didn't see a kids menu, but did ask for a short stack for my son, and my daughter ordered specialty french toast. Still, this was an expensive breakfast for what we got in our opinion. In terms of the Long Island Diner challenge, I'm not going to say that Candlelight is near the top, or near the bottom. They are a solid diner with great service and good food. I would return given the opportunity, but I'm looking forward to trying another diner too. read more

I've found this diner to be hit and miss for years. Some things I get are good and others are meh-- the one thing you can count on is incredible pasta salad. My family & I will literally order a tray of it to go when we host BBQs. I prefer breakfast here over dinner. The egg white omelettes are consistently good (except they don't use fresh mushrooms, so I tend to stay away from those here). The lox & onion egg white omelette is my favorite. I always ask for well done potatoes. I've never really had a dinner option that I love and would order again, but this is a good late night option, too! They have good munchies if you don't feel like waiting in line for Taco Bell after a night out. :) read more

Ok so trying to be positive as I really don't like leaving sub-par reviews, but I gotta say this is really warranted. So we get there and were greeted by 2 uninterested night managers (I assume they were seated together at register). We requested a booth and were seated at a table. I get there might not be a booth available, but there were several open. We pointed this out but was basically rudely told to deal with it. Ok. Next, there was the obviously inexperienced wait staff inappropriately dressed in street clothes. What ever ever happened to professionalim? Rude servers who really treated us like we were inconveniencing their cigarette break. We wanted more coffee, and the waitress we saw through window was standing basically on the otherside of our window smoking a cigarette. Really? We ordered Deluxe burgers and extra fries and of course there was no ketchup to be found. We had to wait for our waitresses cigarette to be finished until we were able to ask for it. Really sh**ty service and delivers with a real sh**ty attitude. We brought this to the manager's attention, but they were disinterested and offered no apologies. Mary was my waitress when I asked her what type of teas do they have she said "we have all different ones" then I asked if they had mango (I was referring to iced teas) she tells me no with an attitude then I tell her I'll just get a mango smoothie which my friend also got. She signs also with an attitude says okay as if it was such a bother to ask questions. A man who I believe is the owner kept peeping his head around the corner which made me and my table (just females) very uncomfortable. We also felt comfortable being that we were all of different races and the tv was on to channel Fox 5 talking about trump. Now the food,,I ordered the chicken cesar wrap with onion wings. My wrap had no cesar dressing on it and my onion rings were almost burnt (very crispy and hard but yet oily). Now my friend just ordered the potato skins which had American cheese slices on it instead of shredded cheese and towards the end of her picking at them she realized there was a hair on the food. I went to a candlelight yesterday. I am someone who is very conservative when it comes to the pandemic and being near people. This was the first time I was at a restaurant since March. They have a really cute outside area with picnic tables and umbrellas. Honestly I have seen a lot of restaurants do tents outside with tables looking almost on top of each other and that makes me so uncomfortable. At candlelight with the umbrellas it felt very open. The other tables were far enough away that I felt comfortable. All the staff wore a mask and wore them properly. I went for a late lunch so there was only one or two other tables there while I was there. It really was such a good and relaxing experience. I will definitely go back! We ordered breakfast for four people and three of the four meals were disgusting. The only meal that was "finished" (didn't finish the side) was the Belgian waffle. Just ordered $108 worth of dinner from Candlelight. I got both Chicken Noodle Soup & Chicken Matzoh Ball Soup and at $15 a quart I expected Chicken, Noodles &Soup Nope. No chicken anywhere to be seen. I called & was told they don't put chicken in their chicken soups: It's really consommé. So it's $15 for 2 cups of consommé. Why would I ever have ordered that? The Chicken Waldorf salad has grilled chicken in a separate small container. But the salad itself is a small container of lettuce with occasional regular, not sugared, walnuts, and some large slices of apple that were browning. And craisons. About 1/3 the size of a salad from Dix Hills Diner. But actually more expensive at $23. I have eaten here many times in the past, and while they have always been more expensive than nearby competition their food has always been excellent. This time I actually feel cheated and misled. How can you have chicken noodle soup with no chicken ? the gentleman I spoke to when I called was very nice and offered to send me some grilled chicken to put in the soup after he explained about how their homemade chicken soup was really broth not soup. why would I want to wait 20 minutes for someone to bring me a packet of grilled chicken to put in cold chicken broth? Candlelight is off my list not because the food had a problem but because I cannot trust what they tell me they are serving me. If the chicken soup does not contain chicken can I trust that the beef burger contains beef? And who knows what is under an entrée with sauce on top. Hopefully Candlelight will take a hard look at their current and fix what they've broken practices read more
