I really used to love this place and they have a few great techs, but my experience here a couple weeks ago put me off so badly I'll never return. Let me start off by saying - I'm a licensed cosmetologist. I'm trained in nails as part of my licensing, I know how to do gel, I know the state board regulations. I do my own manicures, I just like to have someone else do my pedis - its a tough service to do on yourself. :P I walked in a few weeks ago and requested a gel pedicure. I picked out a gelish color and they sent me back to the chair, I selected the chocolate pedi from the list. The tech was gone quite a long time, but whatever. I had already removed my old polish at home in full, but the tech suddenly whips out an electric drill and starts filing away at my bare, natural nails - a HUGE no no every single nail tech and cosmetologist is taught in school. WTF? I stopped her immediately and said I've never had anyone do that, and my nails were polish free and natural - to please not use a drill on them since it could cause damage to the nailbed. She huffed and put the drill away, and pulled out a regular file. I should have seen this as a huge red flag and stopped the service, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt. She lazily filed my nails, barely shaped them, and didnt push back my cuticles at all or trim any dead skin. The scrub and mask part was weird. She did a scrub on one leg, but not the other.. she seemed totally distracted and off in another world. I just wanted her to finish up already - the service was taking a bizarrely long time for a lot of nothing having been done, and a woman who had sat down well after was already being polished. When it came to the gel polish, the real mess began. This woman blatantly had NO clue how to do gel. Which - look, its fine. Everyone starts somewhere. But if you dont know the steps, ASK someone or stick to regular polish services. She didnt wipe my nailbed clean and starts using what is blatantly labeled as gel topcoat as a base coat. Predictably, this means the color coat wouldnt cure properly. I pointed this out to her and she ignored me, and pulls out the drill again to file off the improperly cured gel polish, in spite of my previous request and in spite of the fact that this is a soak off gel polish, which should be soaked off with acetone, not drilled off. At this point, we are nearing a 2 hour long pedicure and i still dont even have color on my feet. I was ready to ask her for the polish and let me do it myself - gel isnt rocket science.. buff the nail plate lightly, dehydrate with a swipe of alcohol, base coat, cure, 2 color coats, cure between each, top coat, wipe the sticky layer with alcohol. Done. She starts again, with a base coat this time. She puts on one coat of color and wipes it with alcohol. Then surprise, surprise, because shes wiped off that layer, the second coat once again doesnt adhere properly and she busts out the drill again. The tech next to me who clearly does know how to do gel just stares blankly at her and offers no assistance. I begin to wonder if this woman is even licensed. I gently suggest she ask someone for some guidance, and someone finally comes to help. The tech who came to assist fixed the botched filing of my nails and reshapes them, and starts soaking off the polish and showing her the order in which to apply. After this, she finally starts again. The application is sloppy, but somehow we make it through. 2 1/2 hours later. They charged me $65 for the privilege of this mess. My natural nails are super thin and look like garbage thanks to the drill. If techs arent properly trained on services you offer, they need to shadow someone until they are - dont just throw them to the wolves and charge full price to customers. I got an eyebrow and lip wax and while I thought it was fine, I noticed 5 minutes later that my eyebrows were too far apart and that I got a BURN above me eye. It hurts to even touch it and then afterwards the women put something to "soothe" it that made it sting even worse. I recommend finding a better place. read more

I was put in the chair at the sane time as my friend and wasn't stated for 30 minutes after they stated her. Last time we were here they asked us to sit on separate sides even though we always make appointments. However, EVERY time I make a reservation and each time I end up waiting 15 minutes to a half hour. This has been going on for years and it's getting old-time to find a new spot. Horrible customer service. I've been here on multiple occasions hoping for better service. Brought my 6 year old daughter with me for her birthday, nail technician did not interact with her at all. Showed my nail technician a pic of the length and design I wanted, we I got was way shorter because she did not want to do a full set even though I said I would need it get the look I was going for. I went for a dip manicure and acrylics. The man did a horrible job. I had to tell him at least 5 times to cut my nails shorter and he did not understand the shape I wanted. He didn't do anything as far as a manicure, my cuticles weren't even cut. I told him repeatedly I wanted a manicure which you pay extra for at this salon. I had to go back a few days later to have my nails cut down and get an actual manicure. When I arrived, the lady asked what tech had done my nails. She had the same man fix them. Again I had to tell him multiple times what I wanted done. He had a very poor attitude and did not apologize or even smile. My daughter got a manicure and was left sitting for 20 minutes before a different tech came back to finish it. Never again! read more

My manicurist talked to one of the other manicurist, who didn't have a customer, the entire time she did my nails. She would actually stop working on my nails and talk to her coworker. If you're a man, don't get pedicure there. My husband and I went to get pedis... we told them we wanted just the basic pedicure. Should have been $35 each... well, upon paying, they tried to charge my hubby $45 because there is "no basic pedicure" for men.... They said men can only get the deluxe (even though I specified regular and she said ok) The services they provided him were identical to mine and he was done first!!! Same ol' same ol'. Never visited the hair salon. The "spa" part looks clean and the staff is friendly enough. Had a pedi where my toenails look oddly shaped when complete. Yesterday, went to get my brows waxed. The tech peeled the paper too slowly and plucked the hell out of them. Today they are itchy red and irritated. Won't go back. Second visit to empty a gift card. No base coat on my pedi, rough cuticle trimming and scraping. No lotion massage on my hands. My ring finger on my right hand is bleeding. Terrible. read more

Why do I always end up with the one person who can't speak English and is the most inexperienced? I was kept waiting so my mother was done WAY before me. Not fun when you come in together and have an appointment. Please don't massage my legs with salt scrub until they are raw. And for some reason I can't get her to even trim my toe nails?!? I've asked 3 times. $30 for the "classic" then the prices go up to $45-$65+. Hmmm...we'll see if she trims those nails after being asked by 4 of her co-workers...ok, yes, but not her forte. If I could give this place zero stars I would. I had an appt at 1:00 pm on a sat and they had me waiting until almost 2 pm. They served 3 different people that came in after me and once I realized It was a trend I said something. They advised that they had an appt. I informed that I had one too. After seeing the trend of them servicing 3 white women prior to me and 2 other women of different ethnicities, who appointments were at 130. One lady who sat beside me even told me that she did not have an appointment but was advised to come back, and received service before me ( and I had an appointment). After the third lady came in who was a white female and received service right away, I stated my issue and left. I would never patronize a place who value one customer more than others. I waited over an hour and saw people go ahead of people who had an appointment and were there longer. I have no issues that the women were white but It started to become a trend once they went ahead of people who were from a different background and it seemed like blatant racism. If u could give this place 10 stars than I would. They are professional, clean, friendly, & masters of their craft! I tried them out when they first opened this winter to have them correct a lifting/breaking problem I was having with my gel nails that were done by another nail salon. I have been going here ever since & have never had a problem with lifting/breakage. It is a one-stop-shop with state of the art facility for nails, massage, & hair. They offer an array of products & services that most other salons/spas do not offer. I could go on & on but all I really have to say is, "Stop in & give them a try. Unfortunately, my experience here was not good. I had a manicure with Dip Powder. My nails were natural and healthy but the manicurist encouraged me to get the powder type of polish because she said it would last much longer. It did look good and might have lasted but I had to have the polish removed just a week later. I developed a fungul infection under two nails. I have been told that it will take months of antifungul treatment to get rid of this. My understanding is that this occurs because of unclean instruments and/or poor application that allows moisture to build up between the polish and the nail bed. The manager was defensive and unkind (certainly not apologetic) though she did agree that the powder should be removed. To the credit of the manicurist that removed the polish, he did not try to charge me but he was a bit rough with the file (see attached) and offered no refund for my trouble. read more

They are very relaxing(I like that they spend a good a amount of time on the foot massage) and you can choose from many options. However; my last trip I sat in the pedicure chair long enough that my water got cold- twice. Then I requested a chin and lip wax. The wax was so hot! I didn't see her even blow on it. I now have crazy annoying pimples and a burn spot. Would recommend for a good pedi but find somewhere else to get waxed. read more

Very clean, modern salon. Candle has 12 pedicure chairs in their own softly lit alcove. The techs were all very friendly. Today, I chose to have the mango pedicure. Right off the bat I was impressed that they let me soak my feet for a fairly long time. Some places rush that part of the service which to me is the best part! My tech shaped my nails and removed my calluses. This was followed by a nice, hot paraffin treatment with a cooling masque on my legs, wrapped with hot towels. A thorough leg and foot massage was next and then my toenails painted with nail art done on each big toe. The whole thing took a bit over an hour and was $50. Absolutely worth it. Just a heads up - bring cash to tip. They even provide tip envelopes if you want to be discreet. I'll be returning to Candle Day Spa for my pedicures in the future. read more

I have been coming here for over year, at first getting regular manicures and pedicures and then I started getting SNS manicures. They got me hooked on the SNS manicures because they really do a great job and the SNS manicures last a long time especially on my nails which are brittle and often break and usually chip with just regular paint on them even right after leaving the store. I never bother making an appointment because they always have somebody available, they rotate their staff so you often get somebody different. They are all pretty much trained in the same way although there are a couple outliers people who I wouldn't want to do my nails and if offered I would say that I'm willing to wait longer for somebody else. I was a walk-in to this spa and lesson learned, not the best idea (make an appointment with a technician you know or have been referred to by someone you know). The technician I was given literally scraped the side of my foot with a scrubbing sponge & it was only because he wasn't paying attention to what he was doing. My girlfriends and I spent a weekend in Frederick and wanted to get mani/pedis. We were referred here and they did not disappoint. We made an appointment for 3 of us and when we walked in we were greeted by name, asked to choose a color then led to the back for our pedicures. The place is clean and the music was soothing like a spa would be. We were able to actually relax and not feel like we were in a club with loud music. The nail techs were great. My tech, Nancy, was especially great as she made tons of recommendations for where we should eat dinner, brunch and go for drinks. All of out manicures and pedicures were great. I came from out of town and chose this salon because it had a website with prices (others in this area didn't have websites with a price list). I liked my nails but didn't like the overall vibe in there. They get you in and out, and act as if you don't exist the second they're done with your nails. My daughter and I went for our manicure and I liked my manicurist, Chin, he was friendly and personable. My daughter's manicurist, Tracy, was the reason I rated this with 3 stars because she was not friendly or personable. She was a big turn off for me. At first, I thought, wow, she's beautiful until I saw her snobby attitude, no longer think she's beautiful. Such a waste! I've been to many nail salons and have not met any manicurist who isn't friendly. In my opinion, to be a manicurist, one should be friendly and personable enough to keep a customer coming. However, the guy (didn't get his name) at the front desk was really friendly. :-) Guess we will go back to Rose Nails. I thought I'd give Candle Day Spa (CDS) a try but, nah, Rose Nails (RS) are friendlier. Not only that, I felt CDS didn't have enough nail colors to choose. RS has much more options. read more

This place is nice for Frederick. It is big and clean, and they have an extensive selection of services, polishes and stations. I was recommended to the salon by my former nail tech, who is friends with one of the guys who works there. Note - I did not catch his name and was unable to request him, so I had some random woman service me. The Pros - generally clean shop (although when we were getting the service we noticed yucky build-up on the floors beside the pedicure chairs), the techs were friendly, and they offered a number of choices for the pedicures. I purchased the hot stone pedicure. There was a LOT of massages - my legs probably didn't need that much attention but for a leisurely day, it was nice. Cons - the amount of massaging was a bit excessive. I declined the neck and shoulder massage at the end. My biggest pet peeve was the aggressiveness of the staff. I am pretty picky and know what I want and what works for me and my nails. Several times they asked and I told, but they kept suggesting other options. Finally, I put my foot down and stated exactly what I wanted, and the polish I wanted it in. And I did not get it. My nails were cracking and chipping by the next evening. And she didn't properly clean the look up so I and my friend had random polish and gel on our fingers and toes. Also there were a lot if employees lounging around chatting in the front. This was distracting and looked unprofessional. Bottom line - the pedicure was nice (but time consuming). I think it was worth the money, but I would definitely not recommend the manicure service. My nails look horrible, and I had to try to clean them up myself after my appt. read more

Just stopped in for a pedicure. Was taken back immediately to the space where pedicures are done. I placed my feet in the tub of water ... and waited, and waited, and waited. I noticed another lady was escorted into the room. I watched and within minutes a technician began her pedicure. I left. I was told by an employee as I was leaving that the other lady had an appointment. Ok, I understand that, but my point is, if you don't have a technician available to do my pedicure, then why do you have me sitting in a tub of water that is getting cold. Simply advise how long the wait will be and allow me to decide if I want to wait or not. I'll be looking elsewhere. read more

Best pedi I've ever had, and I've had MANY!! Very clean! Don't skimp...get one of the specialty pedis for $65...it's worth it. First time ever my pedi came with a neck and shoulder massage while my toes were drying!!! I got the Earth Spa Pedi and my sis got the Jelly Pedi. Both were incredible!!
