I was a walk in to get a gel manicure with no current polish or gel on my nails. The lady rushed the entire process even though there was no one else in the salon. She only put two coats of color gel polish on my nails and the color was still see through and not built up all the way. I asked for another coat and she refused and said if she put another one on then the polish would peel off easy. I let that go even though I was not happy with the passive aggressive answer. She finished a full gel manicure in 15 minutes. It was insane. No massage, poor cleaning and a half color on my nails. Now it's been less than a week and the gel polish is totally peeling off!! I'm furious. It was a waste of $50 and I didn't even have a good experience in the shop. So disappointed, would love a refund. read more

Beautiful inside. Several areas to accommodate for small groups of friends to get pedicures at the same time without distracting other customers. Very clean and modern interior. First thing they had us do was wash our hands and we were only getting pedis, so I appreciate the sanitary efforts being enforced! They were able to remove old polish that regular nail polish remover did not remove (be sure to always use/have them use a base polish to help this) by sanding. Sadly, my leg massage (came with my pedi) was just okay. She literally set a timer for 10 minutes so I know I got what they advertised. I was talking to my companion the whole time so I don't know if she did more than one coat. Based on the current status of my toes less than a week later, I think she inky did one coat. I would give them another chance in a pinch. I scheduled a surprise nail day for my mom's birthday here at Modern Chic and we are thrilled about the service they provided! Firstly, because it was a surprise, my initial appointment was changed a few times to try to ensure that my mom was free and could make the appointment. It was a Saturday appointment that started at 1, then changed to 4:30, and finally, back to 2:30. The salon was extremely accommodating. I could tell that a late appointment would be pushing it but she still allowed it for us. Thankfully, we were able to get fit back into the early afternoon to allow ample time for our services. It was our first time there and I'm sure it was obvious as my mom and I stood around waiting for additional instructions lol but they didn't waste time in providing us directions. We were seated in one of their pedicure rooms where it was just my mom and I and we appreciated the fact that we were seated privately. I didn't catch the nail tech who worked on my mom's nail but my nail tech was Jolie and she was so sweet and kind. They both did a great job with us, and I appreciate that they were patient with us as my mom isn't totally confident in her English. So, as far as services, we got the spa pedicures and their classic manicures. Both packages came with a paraffin wax which was new for my mom but she did comment on how soft her feet were afterwards. She was a nail tech herself back in the late '90s and mentioned that these additions are very new and nothing she remembers. She mentioned that she'd like to come back for more spa pedicures which tells me she had a great time and a wonderful experience. Since it is the time of Covid I'll start by saying they are VERY clean! I walked in and was asked to sanitize then asked to wash my hands with soap and water, assuming so I didn't contaminate the sink handle. All the seats were covered in single use plastic covers. The tools used were sterilized and properly sealed before each use. All single use items like pumice stones were promptly disposed of after use. This should be standard practice by any nail salon but it is not so I was thrilled to see they were following standard procedures that go beyond Covid. I had a little gel left on my toenails and Mary, my technician, removed the gel the RIGHT way by soaking it off. She didn't grind it off, she didn't peel it off, she soaked it. I was already so happy with how it was going and we hadn't even really started yet. Mary was quiet most of the procedure but not in a rude way, she let me sit in peace and enjoy everything she was doing but she was very friendly! She didn't knick me when trimming my cuticles and she didn't dig too deep when cleaning my toes. The presentation of the lotions and scrubs was gorgeous and just went a step beyond in my opinion. She was thorough, precise, and did quality work from start to finish. I picked a color for my nails that was very sheer, which we agreed wasn't as pretty as the display, but she made sure it looked amazing with an extra coat. I loved the store. I loved the cleanliness. I loved that she was following the right procedures. I was cared for and made to feel very welcome. Mary did an amazing job and I cannot wait time go back to see her again the next time! I used to enjoy coming to modern chic for both Pedicures and SNS manicures but since i started coming both my nail techs have vanished, I was told the first was "on vacation" whenever i would call to schedule an appointment, but come to find out from my most recent nail tech she no longer worked there. It's very pricey and the quality has continued to decrease with every visit. The man who did my nails the last time spent 20 minutes cutting the sides of my fingers, not even the cuticles. UPDATE TO OWNERS response: The owner and employees at this salon are absolutely the worst. Their response to my concerns with GEL polish that started chipping 5 days after my service is unacceptable. I posted photos on yelp and their Facebook page. Clearly my nails started chipping well before I called to voice my concerns. I actually held off complaining because it was just one nail. When I realized more were lifting and peeling I called. The business owner claimed that i intentionally was peeling off the polish. I will never return to this business and will ensure not to recommend it to any of my friends. I managed salon and spas for over 5 years . I know how these services are supposed to be performed and how long they last. I've attended CND gel training. These folks are trying really hard to fool a customer that could of been a repeat client. I got my gel polish nails here 9/5 -10 days ago. My nails started chipping last week 9/10. I called yesterday 9/15 and explained to them the generally gel lasts 3-4 weeks for me at any salon I go too. They told me to come back in to get them fixed-9/16. Lena had me wait in their waiting room for 10mins and had her coworker search for the sign in sheet from the day of my services. The woman tells me it's been 11 days and they can't re-do my nails. I have to say , I am shocked . They basically refused to make a service right. I paid for an upgraded pedicure and gel nails plus tipped cash of over 25% and they don't even have the decency to admit their mistake. Lena was rushing when she was doing my nails and did not have them cure under the light long enough , which is why my polish did not last. Instead of understanding that gel polish shouldn't start peeling off 7 days after a service she had her co-worker search for proof to not provide me a service . There wasn't even an option to pay to have it redone. Ultimately this business refused service to me for trying to be a repeat client and catching a mistake. I knew there was going to be an issue when I walked in as she didn't even remember that I was just there. Over $100 in nails services. Also, since I chew my nails (I know, I know...), a polish barely lasts long enough for me to leave the salon. I walked past the day spa while it was still under a little construction and it peaked my interest. I made my way in this morning and I was in awe! It's gorgeous! Needless to say, Lena took care of me immediately, she did a wonderful job with suggesting the dip powder and my nails turned out beautifully. I also had a pomegranate spa pedicure and my feet are saying yes ma'am with the attention Christina gave them. They conveniently had matching nail polish for my toes! I used to LOVE this salon and had great experiences. However, my most recent experience has completely changed my mind, and I will never return. I got a gel manicure done on Friday. The guy who did my service seemed new, which I was fine with. Coming from a licensed cosmetologist stance, I know what it is like being new to the industry. After leaving the salon, I noticed that my color needed another coat of polish since some of nails weren't completely covered, nails were filed unevenly, my cuticles looked untouched, etc. At this point, salon was closed. I called on Saturday stating that I was unhappy and explained why. I was told over the phone that I could come in so they could see my nails and to refund me my money. They close at 5 on Saturday but told me I could come when I got off work (5:15). I go out of my way to drive to the salon, to find that they locked up and left. Since they are closed on Sunday, I call again on Monday, explaining my frustration. They told me to come in Monday and they will take care of my return.. only for me to come in on Monday to be told I cannot get a refund, that they can only fix my nails. Being a full time working mother, I did not have time for my nails to be fixed that day/week. The manager spoke with the owner, who also said I could not get a refund not a gift card to come back when my schedule allowed me to do so. For someone who has been a loyal customer to Modern Day Chic salon, I am now out $37 I had spent on a service that I could have done at home for free, that would look the exact same. The customer service I received was handled very poorly and unprofessional. And after the lack of acknowledgement and understanding towards my situation, I now see they are more concerned about their money income rather than making "the customer happy". It is safe to say that my friends that I've recommended to this salon and I will definitely NOT be back. read more

Call me Karen but this was a crazy experience!!!! First let me start by saying it was all good when I came in, I was greeted and taken good care of by the man at the front. Good job for him because he was very nice and did a good job on my toes. I came here bc i have 2 weddings to attend in 2 weeks and right now I am handicapped I asked for something very specific!!!! This place is fantastic! I've been going to multiple different salons since moving to Frederick and this is the best one. I always get dip powder cause I like it better than acrylic, but some salons don't use enough layers and they break too easily. My nail artist used enough layers that they have lasted almost 3 weeks now with zero cracks or breaks. She also filed them well so they are very thin and lightweight still. The staff is very respectful but the salon doesn't stick to the appointment time at all. They have made me wait 30+ minutes despite having taken an appointment twice so I never went again even though the location was very convenient for me. The service itself was below average. During my second visit, the lady wanted to know where I got my acrylics done because they were so thick and untidy (she forgot that she was the one who did them). I'm not one to write a bad review after one visit - usually I go multiple times because it could've been an off day. But I have to admit I've been very disappointed in my last few pedicures here. I had high hopes for them when they first opened. During this past visit, the technicians rushed us through and even played tag team with us - after ignoring us and making us wait in waiting area despite having appointments. After a week my polish was chipping. My feet were still very rough after the pedicure and my cuticles hadn't been removed. They seemed to have skipped a few steps . I'm prone to ingrown toenails and a few weeks after my pedicure my ingrown nail is worse than ever before - they obviously didn't trim my toenails correctly. They get two stars for cleanliness. Hands down, I have been to so many salons where they rush to get everyone but don't do a proper job or don't respect what you want. The entire staff were nice and enjoyed talking to them. I had a return visit to Modern Chic since Covid started. My visit in March was pleasant and I didn't mind paying more than I usually paid for because Margaret did a good job and was very pleasant. My visit yesterday was the worst experience I've ever had in a salon. The person named Lena was very rude. Did not greet you just told you to sit and don't touch anything. Stay away! The actions of Lena were hurtful and still days later have me feeling shocked and cheated. I initially called to ask about booking a group for my bridal party/ close family before my wedding. I was a little hesitant about the prices, but the salon was convenient, so I asked Lena if I could reserve the group block. I told Lena that I was not sure of our numbers yet, but that we would definitely meet the 6 person minimum. I told her I would find out our exact numbers and services and asked when she would need to know by. She said that was fine and she would call me the week beforehand to talk through those details. I paid her a $100 deposit over Venmo and we exchanged pleasantries. I was genuinely so excited and initially had a good impression. Days before my wedding and she hadn't called, so I called her. I told her we'd have 8 people, 6 arriving at our start time of 11:00 and 2 more coming from further who would be there around 12:30. I asked her how long each person needed, how many could go at once, if we could bring in food, and if she needed me to make a schedule/tell her who was getting what. She said we would have from 11:00-2:30, that each person would need 2 hours if they were getting both a mani/pedi, 5 people could go at once, she did not need a set schedule, and we could bring in food. I said great and that not everyone planned on a pedicure. I was so excited to have this extra time to enjoy and relax with important ladies in my life who were coming together. On the morning that we were scheduled to come, I was surprised to get a phone call from her at 10:00 am saying an appointment canceled so we should come now. I said I'm so sorry, but we are still en route and we will be there at our scheduled time. I was surprised that she sounded annoyed by that reply. When we arrived I said, "Are you Lena? It's so nice to meet you in person!" She frowned at me and said aggressively, "I thought you said 10 people, all manis/pedis." I was shocked by her tone and initially felt bad. I said back gently, "I'm so sorry if you thought that, but I said 8." She grumbled and the day just got worse from there. Every 15 minutes she would bring up the "10 people" and every time I would apologize even though I had no reason to; I never promised 10 people. I tried to be kind to her and compliment the job she was doing. She ignored me. My mom ran out to get us sandwiches since we were there over lunch. She grumbled about how she didn't say we could have a party, even though she told us we could have outside food (there were no decorations or anything to make it a party other than the food.) She also got angry at me because my future mother in law and aunt were running behind (but within our time) and she said they could no longer come. The entire time she spoke to me aggressively and nastily. We were all shocked as we are known elsewhere as low maintenance, respectful clients. I genuinely had no idea I did anything wrong and I felt accused of wrongdoing. I was nearly shaking by the end of our time there. I went up to pay for myself and my mother ($115 for a regular manicure, a gel manicure, and a pedicure!) and asked how I could get the deposit back. She said she would not give it back to me because there were not 10 people. I insisted she give it back and I said again that I never said 10 people. She yelled at me. My friend tried to calm her down and suggested that we split the difference since it was clearly a misunderstanding. She yelled at her, too. I walked away, embarrassed and upset and she walked over to me and continued berating me. I said I don't want to speak to you and walked out. My bridesmaids hurriedly paid, cleaned up, and got out. My mom never got to eat lunch and my mother in law and aunt never got their services. The experience cost me $215 total, but more importantly made me feel terrible and humiliated. I'm not sure if Lena has something going on in her personal life that spurred this behavior, but it was unprofessional, uncalled for, and extremely hurtful. Luckily, I was surrounded by amazing friends and family and went on to have a great weekend, but here and there my thoughts went back to the horrible experience at modern chic. The only thing I would change about my wedding weekend was going there. I would rather have all gotten our nails done separately before coming to town. I have since requested my deposit back on Venmo thinking maybe Lena would reflect and have a change of heart, but she denied it. I learned a lesson to never pay a deposit without an agreement in writing. And more importantly, I learned to truly appreciate other businesses that are ethical and treat their customers with compassion and understanding. Lena, and by extension, Modern Chic, are unethical and unkind. read more

We took a huge chance not knowing anything about this day spa. Wow....our expectations were exceeded by far! The pedicures were FABULOUS. So relaxing, including wonderful massage, hot towels, and paraffin. The people could not have been nicer or friendlier, and they allowed us to bring in wine and snacks for our celebration.
