I went on a Sunday night and food was good. Had one of the specials and it was good members of my party had the trio and overall ok. I think the food needs more seasoning in the meat choices. Great addition to the town of red hook. Quality Mexican food, reasonably affordable. I ate chicken enchiladas and they were great. My family got a pitcher of margarita and that was relatively expensive but tasty. They used to offer 15% off for Bard students but I believe they stopped that deal unfortunately. Had originally given Cancun a pretty poor review a few years back as the food was mediocre at best. Have gone back a couple of times this year when we'd heard they'd changed owners or chef and have found it to be much better than it was. Good decent Mexican food. Last time we went, the waitress heard my daughter say "oh, they have flan" and she brought one for the table...super sweet. Seafood was nice and fresh, sampler plate good. We have not been here in quite a while and WOW just blew us away tonight. Service was a bit too quick--barely had a few sips of their killer Margaritas and the meal was there. Food was great, I had seafood burrito which was very good along with rice and refried beans, wife had vegetarian burrito and our son had fish tacos. Tried this place for dinner for the first time Sunday evening. Called in a take out order. We live 25 minutes away. So we are reasonable people and expected that the travel would affect the food. Service was friendly. The only reason I gave it two stars. They slightly messed up the order instead of a main dish they gave us a second kids taco dish. So my wife missed out on her meal that she ordered and was on the receipt so we paid three or four dollars more then we should have. Not that much of a problem. The salsa was soup with some tomatoes floating around in it. The food was very bland. All the food looked like it was literally just thrown in the containers. The nacho platters were burnt. My wife ate the kids taco meal that was given to us by mistake and one of my kids ate some of it and the nachos. Both fell ill about ten minutes later for the rest of the night. Was excited to try this place now sorry I have. Oh well on to the next place. read more

I really don't get the negative reviews of this place. I honestly feel that those people have never had real Mexican food. They're probably the same kind of people that would prefer a flour tortilla over corn, or horribly pronounce carne asada, or perhaps (sigh) are vegetarian. Cancun is an honestly good, as authentic as you're going to get in these parts of NY, Mexican restaurant. The food has always tasted fresh and drinks are well made and strong. Service does lack at times when busy but that comes with the territory of a lot of restaurants in town. There's a solution for that: don't come here when its packed. I personally am offended with the reviews that say 'Try Bubbas Burritos instead'. First off you cant get a margarita at Bubbas, secondly its vegetarian so screw that, and thirdly the chicken taquito bites at Cancun's are way better than anything at Bubbas, that's a fact of life. Don't get me wrong Bubbas is a great burrito stand. Healthy and stuff. Good homemade salsas. But to compare the two is like comparing cheeseburgers to pizza. Cancuns is good, Bubbas is good, both are two completely different entities. Cancun's is a Mexican restaurant, Bubbas is a roadside vegetarian burrito stand. If you do go to Cancun's which I highly recommend you do, do so with an open mind and empty stomach, try the taquito bites, get the chicken mole enchiladas, brave the super hot sauce that comes with the steak tacos, GO CORN not flour, you will not be disappointed. read more

Not a big fan of the food. I ordered a chimichanga 2 different times and I either got a burrito or they just don't know how to make a chimichanga. Disappointed because I could live on Mexican food everyday so instead I go to Santa Fe in Tivoli. They do make good margaritas though and I have been over charged there a few times. Unimpressed. "slop on a plate" They messed up our take out order, when we called they insisted it was what we ordered... so we (at work) let it go and tried again a few months later. DITTO on the messed up order, and overcharged us; no compensation, no apology. The chicken tasted and had the texture of canned chicken I might take backpacking (dry and stringy). Those that ordered beef were sure it was shredded chicken with a brown sauce. Mole was horrible. (sorry, that's a deal breaker for me!) -... Overly processed /Cisco food. Lacks freshness, flavor. The staff was nice the one time my husband & I TRIED to eat there but the service was slow and our food was so mediocre, my dish was cold, except for one side of the plate which was soggy- [it screamed] MICROWAVE (reheated, I am convinced) My husband said it reminded him of school lunches as a kid- slopped on a plate, with equal flavor and flair... We baled and went to Flat Iron across the street. Too bad. The town could use a good family sit-down establishment. Want Mexican/southwestern/TexMex style? so many local options!! TRY: Gabi's in Rhinebeck, Mexican Radio in Hudson; Once Upon A Taco stand in Hudson, Santa-Fe in Tivoli; THE BURRITO STAND @Hardemann farm stand in Red Hook; Bubby's Take Away in Red Hook, and then there's a new Taco place coming in 2 doors down from Taste Budds (great café) in Red Hook... The interior is a great colorful party atmosphere... but just don't plan to eat here and be impressed with the offerings... OH, they did not honor THEIR "grand-opening" certificate a friend gave us who was there for the grand opening... I guess because we mentioned it was given to us, and it was supposed to be used by the same patrons (??) We will not be returning. But I do hope they take note of the reviews and repeated comments so that we may read the reviews in the future and change our minds... and make us want to return... but if history repeats itself, they will brush it off as the patrons problems, managers not responsible. watery salsa, lack of flavor and canned and processed food is not why we go out to eat, but is clearly their business plan. no gracias! adios Amigos read more

Best mexican food I've had in a while. Im not from the area, but we found Cancun's while driving through town. There were a few places we were thinking about going but I'm glad I chose here. I had a the Loco Burrito which was huge, definitely worth the money. The staff was extremely nice, and caring. Next time in NY I'll be sure to go there again. read more

I ate at Cancun's two weeks ago- and it will be the last! As I feared there are times that no matter how bad the situation, it may just have to be something you suck up and hope doesn't happen again. Pulling out a used, soiled bandaid from your mouth, that was inside your food is NEVER okay!! But what's even worse is when ownership/management literally laughs it off, gives you the bill, and says "Oh well it's the first time this has happened, don't know what you want me to say, good night!" And then referred me to the Internet to find out any additional information I was requesting. That latter response was probably more insulting than the disgust of chewing on a used bandaid. That I remained discreet and polite was a reaction that I had no idea was within me considering the panic that set in when I realized what I pulled out of my mouth.I know the importance of reaching owner/ manager and how anything can happen but just as important is the trust we put on those who prepare our food. The response to a situation like this could have made all the difference. That response to me has no place in any town's eateries. read more

My wife and I tried this place on a lark. It has been consistently good even though management has changed. None of those changes were due to malfeasance or incompetence. The head staff these days seems to be a genial Mexican gentleman named, Isaías. He is maitre'd, bartender and waiter. He makes a great Michelada, one of the best I've ever had. The food is as good as any I have had anywhere in the USA or Mexico. (I spend a lot of time working in Mexico, so I am quite familiar with many of the various dishes.) I think it is easily the best Mexican food and very superior service available in Dutchess and Ulster counties combined. As someone that has been going to Mexican Restaurants regularly since the days of "La Casita" in Poughkeepsie, as well as months spent in Mexico, I wholehearted recommend this place. Try the Dos Equis Amber on draft. It will make you wonder why you keep ordering the others. read more
