Canal side is great. There is a lot to do for everyone. They have kayaking, water biking, paddle boats, bikes to rent, restaurants, a beer garden, tour boats, ping pong, fuzz ball, giant chess and checkers, concerts, festivals, great views. And in the winter they have a huge ice rink, and you can ride ice bikes! They really have built canalside up so much and I hope they keep on going, which it looks like they are. Great...if there's actually some kind of event going on at the time of your visit. During my visit yesterday afternoon, there was some kind of small car/boat show. I didn't really see the boat show portion though 'cause I think you actually hafta be down at the dock area. Yes, it's a nice area with a boardwalk, a seasonal café, some chairs, outdoor foosball table, chessboard, etc., but aside from that immediate area, it's sort of a dead area of town. I was expecting more of a restaurant, café, pedestrian streets with a market or something, but there wasn't really any of that going on. It was relaxing, but very quiet, not lively like other waterfronts of other cities. I'd equate it to Toronto's Harbourfront, but there's always something going on there, live concerts, festivals, vendors, something. Plus, there is a strip of restaurants just outside that immediate area. Just outside Canalside, underneath the highway overpasses, seems to be a bit industrial/commercial. Another observation was there was no real "entrance" or indication of where Canalside actually is. I just followed where people were going to figure out where it was. Otherwise, I'd have no clue. Parking was not difficult to come by, but again, this may be because there wasn't that much going on at the time of my visit. Does Canalside have a planning committee? read more

The old Buffalo has returned, and it's not a good thing. We had friends come to visit for the July 4th weekend, planning their trip in part to photograph the Tall Ships and spend a bit of time relaxing at Canalside. Instead, Canalside and the City of Buffalo chose to erect large construction fences to force people to pay for unobstructed views of the ships. To make matters worse, the fences also limited the access to the Adirondack chairs and seating on much of the grass, ruining the charm of a Buffalo "jewel". What a shameful and embarrassing decision by all those who did so, and all the other "movers and shakers" who have a voice (Pegula, Brown, Higgins, etc.) in this region. Welcome back, greedy and stupid Buffalo - we didn't miss you. read more

Can I tell you how I was not happy today???!?!?. So I had my grandson. 12 months old and just started walking a couple weeks ago. Actually exactly the day before his birthday, before turning one. Anyone with little ones knows that once they start walking the dare not stop! So I had the famous idea to take him to canalside and play with him and let him roam freely with his little steps. My daughter and I had to use the restroom. We waited until we got there just to be locked out! Bathrooms are locked. The play area was just sand and a big boat. I was more annoyed by the restrooms being locked. There were several others who tried the restroom as well. The food stand also closed everything thing was closed. It was about 4:15 pm. I'm turned off we let him walk around and we played with him but I live close to the town of Tonawanda. I didn't go all the way downtown for utter disappointment. We made the best of it. We shouldn't have had to though. read more

Starting to turn into the visitor hub gem it was intended to be....but it just keeps getting better. In a city that really likes to turn a great things into crap...this they certainly did not with this area. Bravo Buffalo!!! Winter update: Ice rink just opened and it's pretty impressive. You can rent ice skates and ice bicycles as well. There's also a side portion of the rink where you can curl. The outdoor space is very well maintained with copious amounts of outdoor heaters and a Tim Hortons close by at the Harbor Center. I haven't seen a time when this has not been crowded so expect to wait a little. Free parking is there with a small walk and there are pay lots adjacent to Canalside for those of you that don't want to hear about walking in the cold from your wife. Very well done! read more

Buffalo is doing great things canalside!! It's getting better every year. Every Friday during the summer the East Aurora Explore and more museum of play sets up tents with different activities for all ages. They have their staff there to assist and monitor. They also have the giant sandbox behind the ice cream and food hut. They do provide some toys and chairs. They are doing kayaking for $20 a person or paddle biking $15 a person! The kayaking is so funny and a great work out!!! You can borrow yard games so bring your ID they hold it for collateral! Summer concerts every Thursday! Being somewhat new to the Buffalo area, i really love what they have done with Canalside. There is so much to do here all the time, and in every season! In the summer they have carnivals, water bikes in the lake, paddle boats, vendors, concerts and more. In the winter they have ice skating and curling and winter festivals. Shark Girl lives here, and has quickly become a Buffalo institution. They have good vendors and food trucks on the regular. The metro train drops you off right there. Not sure if this is the page where I write my experience or not... Brad and I came to the Canalside rink yesterday to do some ice skating and ICE BIKING!! Whaaat?!! The rink is beautiful!! There were bridges people could stand on to watch and a lot of interesting vendors. It costs $3 per person to skate for up to 8 hours and $7 to rent skates per person. We opted for the ice bikes that cost $10 for 30 minutes per person. The ice bikes were so much fun!! Such a great and unique experience! I now know what I want for Christmas, an ice bike!! The only complaint I have is that they needed to Zamboni (is that a verb?) the rink more often. The bikes took a lot of effort to go fast because it wasn't on smooth ice. Of course, right when we got off, they cut the ice in half and Zamboni-ed it. I would definitely recommend coming to the Canalside rink! It was a great day date event. Parking is an ease ($3 for all day parking) and it's great being downtown! read more

Cool place. Went with my daughter and grand daughters. Met friends. I think that it's pricey in that not only do you need to rent skates (if you don't own any) but you also must have them sharpened prior to use ( extra cost). Whatever. COLD FREAKING DAY, high winds, sub zero real feel and commissary was out of all things hot. At 3pm. Again, whatever. Work the quirks. Perhaps then I shall revisit. This is the best place to be during the summer! Sooo many free events and activities to participate in. You can walk along the boardwalk or sit across the grass. Who doesn't love coming to canal side?! If you are ever looking for a fun activity to do any time of the year just stop by canal side! I recently went to the silo light show they had last night, although I did not stay because there was over 8,000 people there. They have a website with all of the activities and events so certainly take a look at that. I personally like the Thursday concerts they offer but I hear through the grapevine that they are looking for a new location for that, if it's true I will certainly be disappointed along with the rest of Buffalo. read more

I had heard about this new park in downtown Buffalo this past winter when there was a lot of press about ice skating at Canalside. We were in Buffalo late on Saturday morning and had time before some other tourism stops so we decided to check it out. A big Color Run crowd was just breaking up so the park was still hopping but we were able to snag a table and chairs next to the canal. It is a very nice set-up and with the other new urban development nearby it left us with a very favorable impression of Buffalo and its rebirth. We are already planning a return trip to take the nearby harbor boat tour and to look around a bit more. read more

This is a place that calls you to linger, and take a moment to relax and enjoy a bit of life. I loved the colorful inviting relaxing lounge chairs spread throughout the green area, the larger than life games such as connect four, and the unique artisan sculptures like Shark Girl. Buffalo is slowly moving in the right direction in terms of developing things more and more on the canal side, which hopefully shows the potential of what the rest of the waterfront can do which is sadly way underdeveloped. The change from Thursday in the Square concert series to Thursday at the Harbor concert series was a great way to start the push for proving canal side can bring a new look and feel to the rest of Buffalo's waterfront area. The turnouts for the Thursday at the Harbor is always a good turnout, and sometimes even great depending on who is playing that Thursday. There are paid concerts that are also being thrown in the Summer mix at rates around $40 for a ticket. The city has a festival called Citybration that they have here now as well. Each year it seems more and more types of events are being brought here which is great news. The parking in this area isn't very great as of right now unless you feel like paying 5-10 bucks to park (some places even charge more). You're better off parking near Chippewa street and taking the train down. You can also find some other places in the area to park and walk a short bit which isn't a bad thing in the nice Summer months all of these great activities are happening during. read more

Not being a Buffalonian, I don't have authentic beef with how the city has f@!^%ed up its natural resources in the past (skyway, 198 through Delaware Park) but my husband has given me the cliffnotes on the history and the well-deserved pessimism a lot of folks have about what the city was going to do with canalside. Well I think the city has done really well especially with the city's history being not so great. I am one that was glad the city's desire to team up with Bass Pro fell through--Canalside should be a green space for hanging out, concerts, athletic workshops, small businesses (water bikes, silo climbing, bflo kyak etc.) not stupid gigantic stores. The space is gorgeous and is being really well maintained. Its clean, friendly and easily accessible. Once final construction is done around the last few minor spaces, traffic will flow even better. The main space also leads to other areas such as the gallagher space. All this space is great for hanging out, biking, walking, running, picnicing, just good ol' family fun. My main concern was safety and cleanliness. My friend and I did visit recently and there were very 'unseemly garbage" in the canal water (right by where families were). That needs to be kept up better. Still I think the space is very well cleaned seeing as there really is no way to 100% close it off. Safety wise I feel 100% safe here during the day and during the night during major events there is a visible police presence so I'm not worried about myself or my car. read more

Lovley state but Buffalo was and is always in my heart. I love this place! It's great to see Buffalo introducing fun activities to the public. In the winter they have an ice skating rink that is super fun where you can give ride a bike on the ice! In the summer they have a ton of fun activities as well. I went there last week with my mom and went kayaking and water biking. It was a great work out and a fun activity. We were able to pass by the Labatt Blue Towers and the General Mills Building (it smelled like Cheerios!) You are also able to walk around the area and see the famous shark girl or sit in the extra large lounge chair. They also have a couple of places you are able to eat and many normal sized lounge chairs to sit on and relax as well. It's a great place to bring the family or have a date night. I love coming here when I'm home and look forward to see what else they add next! read more

Yesterday was such a beautiful day in Buffalo so I decided to head down to Canalside after I finished up at my gym. I didn't have a plan but upon entering the area I noticed a sandwich board that outlined all the organized activities offered for the day. It seems that there is a full slate of activities going on there everyday. Something for everyone! I opted to sit in on a Shakespeare performance for a bit before heading over to Clinton's Dish for a quick bite to eat. Clinton's Dish is a cute little food shack on the wharf that offers a variety of simple food items (see my review: http://www.yelp.com/biz/clintons-dish-buffalo#hrid:uHrFRcYfK5qxO8UZAH7sfA). I then decided to take advantage of a one hour historical 'walk' entitled "The Erie Canal Harbor Story" where I was enlightened with a very informative presentation about the history of the Erie Canal. It was fascinating! It was so interesting to learn about some the rich history that our city was built on and it seems that so much of that history started right there, where Canalside now sits. If you get down there, don't hesitate to take advantage of one of these FREE historical presentations - you won't be sorry. It's exciting to see Canalside coming along so nicely! This place has drastically improved in such a short amount of time. Once they got the ball rolling it's been nothing but good things ever since. This place had been so deserted for years. But the recent upgrades and installs make it a target spot to spend time with friends and family. The ice rink doubles as a small water way where you can go boating in the warmer months. But whatever you do get there early bc the crowds come packing it out!! They have food options and play areas for youth also. read more

Stopped down here for the Feist show last night. My first concert at the Harbor since moving back from Vegas. All in all its places like this that make me glad I moved back to Buffalo. This is definitely a great place to come an enjoy the waterfront. Stroll along the boardwalk side. Grab some ice cream, a deck chair in the sun, or maybe a free concert. Also saw the large sand pit area. Will have to bring the kids down to enjoy that for sure. Places like this are what breathe life into a community. Vegas could learn a thing or two from Buffalo on how to do it right. read more

I love Canalside! Buffalo's waterfront is HOPPING. Even on a Monday! This place gets better and better! There are concerts, kid events, water sports, the Naval Park, restaurants, Kayaking and all of this under the skyway. You can't go wrong here and it makes me happy I live in Buffalo which just keeps getting better by the minute. read more

Ridiculous system to skate. You have to wait in the same line to rent skatea as you do to just buy an access ticket. So if you have your own skates, it's a major pain and in my opinion not worth it. So many other great places to skate in Buffalo area read more

I love what they are doing with Canalside but it is ridiculous that they are now charging to park for the free concert series. All those tax dollars we pay... Also, the alcohol tents are not well monitored, since people can enter from any side, I saw a bunch of under age people, without bracelets easily get beer. I know those working the tents are overwhelmed with the pace and lines of people but the bracelets are easily checked. read more
