With several locations in California and Hawaii, and international locations as exotic as Bali (2), Japan (7), Australia (3), Argentina (6), France (14), it's a wonder to find a second location to go with Park City here in little ol' Utah. Especially since Utahns only do a lot of their three areas of focus (snowboarding), a little of another (skateboarding), and, because of Utah's land-locked geographical location, none of the third (surfing). Still, here we are! Although it is like many retailers focused on the surfing, skater, and snowboard communities (like Zumiez, Vans, etc.), Volcom's focus seems more on the clothes than the accessories. So, if you, your spouse, and your kids all vibe with Volcom's style, you'll all be able to find things to wear, especially in the summer: A lot of swimsuits and board shorts, tees, caps, sandals, rash guards, hoodies, jeans, and flannel. My only beef is with the sizes ... not much for the big, not much for the tall. While not a lot many jaw-dropping outlet mall prices, their current "Essentials Kit" of 2 tees, 1 pant, 1 hoodie, and 1 hat is an excellent and well-priced way to get indoctrinated into the Volcom way.

The box was so aggressively over-taped that it ripped apart while opening, and the boots literally fell out. One boot was clearly a display model, visibly dirty, scuffed, and worn, showing obvious signs of being in and out of bindings and tried on countless times. After some digging, it appears this display boot dates back to around 2012, which makes this even more unacceptable. It still had an ink security tag attached, suggesting little to no quality control. When contacting customer service, the interaction was calm but completely unhelpful -the representative was disengaged and dismissive, offering no real solution. We were also told we'd have to send the boots back and wait for them to receive the return before any refund, which meant we couldn't afford to buy replacement boots in the meantime. Charging $140 for mismatched, outdated display boots and backing it up with poor customer support is misleading and unacceptable. This was meant to be a Christmas gift, and instead it turned into frustration and extra stress. I would not recommend this shop. Edit to add: The business responded stating I asked for an "80% discount with free shipping." What I actually asked was whether they would reasonably work with me on price after sending boots that were clearly used, damaged, and later identified as old display boots--without that being disclosed beforehand. A $40 discount on a $140 charge did not reflect the condition or age of the product. I'm adding this clarification so buyers have full context.

He talked me through the sizing requirements I needed to acquire for my bike. I found a new tire and I sent the old tires back. Bubba made sure that I was taken care of by paying shipping and handling both ways, and also paid the difference in the amount for the new tires. My favorite thing overall is when they have sales and whatnot, you get a personalized email from the person that helped you before, letting you know you have first pick for the sales - that makes this business jump into a better category than any other clothing store I've been to in SLC. Maybe earlier and more aggressive mark downs would help turn over inventory quicker? When something is months old, it should go on sale. I've mostly shopped at the gateway location and despite some choppy customer service have remained a steady customer for especially their Gstar jeans. This week I got the regular presale email. Lots if regular items on Sale, a presale plus 10 % off everything in store for preferred customers. As I arrived I was greeted without anyone telling me about sale. I found a bunch of racks with red dot on tags but when I asked what dots were for (hoping presale) I was told it was marked for inventory purposes only. I found a nice dress in the regular sale area marked down to $100. As I was paying I pulled up my email and asked about the 10 % off. The man behind the register answers that that is for presale only. I said "well what's presale items then?" I get a reply from another associate that everything marked in red dots is 40 % off for presale customers. "Oh, we'll I wish I would have known that was all on sale, I wasn't told when I asked" I replied. After having gone through all those clothes thinking they were regularly priced I simply didn't have it in me to go through them all again. Frustrating. "So what about 10 % on everything in store as listed in email?" I show him the email. He replies that he can give the 10 % but that I will have to pay now and pick up dress on Saturday. Why??? Talk about making it difficult for someone trying desperately to shop the sale in their store. Argh!!! I waited for him to be decent and give me the 10% off since the sale and extra discount was the whole reason I made the special trip there and now I missed both. Silence. I finally said "oh well I guess it's not worth $10 for me to come all the way back here on Saturday". Clueless of golden opportunity to treat a loyal customer with some proper customer service, he took my $100 and wished me a good day. Felt like stomping out of there like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. "Big mistake, HUGE"! The money doesn't bother me really but how easily he dismissed and confused a clearly loyal customer who was trying to get the deal the email had advertised. So when I had a friend mention Mago, I knew it was time to pop in. Situated in the massive shopping complex at Traverse Mountain (the one with Harmons) it's just a little pocket of outdoor vibe. The space is clean and flanked with racks on one side, and shelves on the other, with a few fixtures sprinkled in. I was here on an errand for someone, actually, so I came looking specifically for a long sleeve Patagonia shirt. They had plenty! They do feature a lot of Patagonia, Hippytree, Cotopaxi, and Naturebacks among others, including a few things with their own house brand. It's primarily clothing, and I didn't really look too much into the gear stuff. They had some nice sweatshirts, tees, and long tees. With those brands, you can imagine that they're not giving the stuff away. Long tees were anywhere from $25 to $50. That's about par for the course on the stuff, so not unreasonable so far as comparison shopping goes. I dig the vibe, I dig what they're into. It's a small store so you can pretty much peruse everything and see what they're about in one trip, but with changing inventory you have plenty of reason to come back again.

I met up with them, but noticed a store in the strip that caught my attention. They had Patagonia, Cotopaxi, and some other brands I recognized, so I ditched the girls and went over to check it out. This store is awesome! It has a nice vibe and a great assortment of comfortable and useful clothing, gear, bags, etc for outdoor types. Definitely has the mountain vibe that compliments the nearby mountain ranges! One of the owners, Amber, was super friendly and helpful and I really loved the selection of clothing and accessories in the store. If you are looking for a local boutique to feel the outdoor Utah spirit, MAGO is the place to visit!
