Jalapeño corn bread + conch fritters
    David H.

I consider myself an OG fan of calypso when it was one of downtown Edmond's best kept secrets. Not gunna lie yall, I used to go there just to get their jalapeño corn bread with honey butter (it's a little different now, tbh not as good as before). Some things have changed but I still feel like it's underrated relative to other options in the area. Try their jerk chicken, oxtail Rasta pasta, or their curried goat!

    Worst calamari ever.

This place is straight up bad. Service is great and location is cozy, but the food is blander than a Denny's. The only good thing I tried was the oxtail naan and the cornbread. The beef stew and jerk chicken were under-seasoned, and the calamari was terrible. 16 dollars for a tiny plate of soggy chunks of squid that had zero character or flavor in the batter. I had to go to Bongo's cafe the day after to cleanse my palate of this facsimile of "Caribbean" food.

Most of our dishes missed the mark in some way. At least we had a prime view of the Friday night sunset in Edmonds. Our calamari escovitch app took forever to come out. It looked pretty and had a decent spice profile, but it was tough to eat. Even the tostones were totally dry inside. When it came to our mains: The peppered beef stew, which was the least regional dish we ordered, nevertheless clearly won the night, thanks to the yummy starch finish from the garlic mash. My brother finished it off in no time. In contrast, my chayote citrus salad was just disappointment: its oily dressing was totally lacking in acidity, and it lacked a soft element for texture. I'm not even sure where the chayote was. My mother's seared scallops, at $42, had an exemplary cook - glistening white and tender throughout - but the runny sauce failed to achieve flavor concentration. I also ordered a painkiller, which was drinkable, but obviously used cheaper rum. In the end, I'm not sure I'd recommend Calypso to anyone based on the night we had. I found our server energetic and welcoming, but she never even acknowledged that our appetizer was late.

Top Tear service and the food was Ladt night my wife and I had my birthday celebration at Calypso and let me tell you all they was so on point with everything they even had a sign made for me and not to mention the yummy food Our server Rob was very tentative and made sure we're taking care of. They even brought out a Birthday Cake for me which was very thoughtful and special to me. Thank you to Jennifer, Rob, and the amazing staff at Calypso for hosting my birthday celebration there. One last thing PLEASE BRING BACK WEEKEND BRUNCH

Came back for dinner/happy hour. We enjoyed our food. Our server was kind, and very helpful. Started with the calamari on happy hour, which was topped with pickled escovitch. Very good- On the softer side. The jerk chicken was good, but a little dry and not spicy at all. However, I eat a lot of traditional jerk, so I'm used to the normal spice of the dish. The curry goat was fantastic! If you're trying to decide on a dish, I highly recommend going with that. It was tenter and seasoned beautifully. I also got the cornbread again, which was very good. For drink, I got the Mule cocktail which was okay, but didn't have the strong ginger flavor a mule usually has- probably wouldn't get it again. In all, still highly recommend for brunch, dinner or happy hour.

I'm struggling a little on this review and how to rank it. The ambience is simple with a full bar and great staff that helps you through any questions you may have along with giving suggestions when needed. We chose to try a few things so stuck to the appetizers which might not have been the best move for bang for our buck. We got calamari table favorite the sauce was good too Chicken wings nice earthy flavor Scallops--okay but wouldn't get again for the price Corn bread amazing including the butter!

The food was really good. The server was friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. They also had Fix habanero sauce that was so good I bought some on Amazon. The restaurant is located on the Main Street and easy to get to

Easily one of my newly found favorite restaurant in Edmonds. Calypso brings the flavors and the hospitality of the Caribbean to the PNW. My first visit to this restaurant left me with a positive impression. The space exudes tropical vibes and relaxed atmosphere. The menu showcases various dishes from the islands including the ubiquitous jerk chicken. This is I had to try. The bone in thighs was tender and had a nice spice. This was served with rice, beans, and vegetable mix. The pineapple scotch bonnet jam add an even greater kick to the chicken. I also ordered a mojito which was served in a hurricane glass with garnish and flexi straw. My second visit was just for drinks and an appetizer. I tried their jerk chicken wings and asked for the sauce on the side. Very flavorful and full of spice. My third visit was for brunch. I ordered their hash bowl which had peppered beef, roasted vegetables, breakfast potatoes, and hollandaise. The beef was tender, vegetables cooked perfectly, and generous amounts of hollandaise sauce. Service was friendly and attentive. Rob constantly checked in on our table and made sure the drinks flowed. This restaurant is a must visit when in Edmonds.

4 stars today because the service was a little frazzled. 1. Waited 45 minutes for a table but total 10-15. 2. Asked for a napkin and silverware 3 times 3. Asked for our app ASAP to feed the kiddo. All the complements go to the chef. Per usual our meal was delicious. We typically know when we go here that the service will be slower than usual. Which is fine, unfortunately, it seems like they are understaffed. I do have some sympathy for our server that was wearing several hats - hosts, food runner, bus boy and server. He was running the show solo. The owner was helping here and there, sitting folks, cleaning tables and delivering drinks. All the while, our server was serving the entire restaurant! Go you dude. #skills They added a bar which is a nice touch to the floodplain.

We went around 11:30 AM thinking we would get a lunch menu, but it happens that it's brunch menu until 2 PM. Still went ahead and ordered the calypso toast, the jerk sandwich and steak and potatoes along with the wings. The jerk sauce which comes with the wings had a different taste and was good. The wings was little bland for our taste. The potatoes which came with steak wasn't liked by my wife but otherwise everything else was good. They also had a pina colada virgin! The ambience was good and so was the service. Would definitely visit again for the dinner menu.

A sign lured us in as a light rain began to fall - a sign promising drinks in a pineapple. We had already eaten earlier, so we were intent on drinking only. it was fairly quiet when we entered with only a couple tables occupied which isn't uncommon for most restaurants during the time between typical lunch and dinner. Our waitress was very friendly and ensured we had drinks as long as we wanted them. The drinks were very good; most of the one I had were on the sweeter side, but that was to be expected from a restaurant that proclaimed tropical vibes. We ordered the conch fritters and while I didn't care for them my partner loved them. I do not think it was any fault in the preparation, I just don't think I'm a conch fritter fan. All in all it was a lovely escape.

My husband and I stopped by Calypso for an impromptu date night and had a great time! Be prepared to wait - we thought we were beating the dinner crowd by coming around 7:30PM, but were told it would take an hour to be seated. I do appreciate that the restaurant calls you when the table is ready though - this allowed us to go grab a drink elsewhere while waiting. We were seated right away once we got back to the restaurant. Props to our server that Saturday night as it seemed like she was the only one on the floor. My husband and I went with the: - Pina Colada & Bahama Breeze - These drinks were bigger than expected! I'm a sucker for Pina Coladas in general, and this one was great. The Bahama Breeze was a pass for me - it was almost TOO much alcohol hahah - Jerk Chicken Wings - Loved the seasoning on these wings! I liked having the sauce on the side - keeps the wings crispy - Rasta Pasta - You can order the dish with a choice of either jerk chicken, shrimp or just veggies. The jerk cream sauce worked really well, and the bread was perfect for mopping up every last bit! - Jerk Pork Loin - The pineapple jam on the pork was a great touch, and my husband finished his dish completely :) There's so much more that we want to try on their menu, and we'll be back for another tropical drink (or two!)

My girlfriend got the Black Bean Mole Kale, which is one of several vegetarian/vegan items on the menu. Equally good. We shared a plate of the Papas; the garlic sauce, although bright pink, was delectable. They have a fine selection of brews and ciders on tap. I ordered the Finn River Organic Cider and felt it went well with the meal (dry, subtle flavor). Service was cafeteria style (order at the counter). It did take a while for our food to arrive--there was a larger party just ahead of us and everything is freshly made--but we really didn't mind the wait. FYI, the place is tiny, and I could see it filling quickly at busy times. There are two large tables inside (we shared one with another couple), a smattering of tables for 2, and some counter seating inside and out. Great place! I'll definitely be back!

Lorenzo opened Paseo in 1994, where his popular Cuban roast pork sandwiches were regarded as among the best in the country. After years of local expansion, Paseo abruptly filed for bankruptcy in 2014. The brand was subsequently bought out by a local entrepreneur, but the sale did not include Paseo's secret recipes (the reboot attempted to reverse engineer the sandwiches with varying success). So, in 2015, Lorenzo's sons revived Paseo under a new name, Un Bien, armed with their father's original recipes. Nowadays, Un Bien is generally regarded as superior to Paseo, and you can grab their Caribbean sandos at one of the three locations across Seattle. You can't miss the pastel pink-and-teal palette of the original shack on an otherwise drab block of Ballard. As you approach the wooden window, you are greeted by the aroma of sauteed meats and veggies. Communal laquered wood benches are lined up underneath a covered pergola. Fifties hits ring respectfully around the kitchen. My partner and I visited for late weekday lunch, and we ordered immediately. We opted to focus on the signature pork shoulder, so we split the #1 Caribbean Roast and #2 The Press. Across both sandwiches, we were impressed by the tender pork, rich onions, lemon-forward aioli, and marinade-soaked baguette. The standard roast pork sandwich added on pickled jalapenos and crisp romaine, culminating in a dynamic flavor that accentuated the meat. Meanwhile, The Press featured tart banana peppers, smoked ham, and melty Swiss, amping up the sweet and savory flavors alike; we agreed that this extra-messy sandwich just edged out the standard version. Our order took just minutes to be prepared, and the bill just topped $30. Despite the fanfare, I still found myself surprised by just how satisfying Un Bien's sandwiches turned out to be. Across all the food I ate in Seattle, only these pork sandwiches would be worth a return visit, even if I had to venture out of my way.

When we asked for clarification because the restaurant was advertised as being open until 9:00 PM, staff confirmed they were open until then but said the seating area would close earlier anyway. After receiving our food, we were told not to sit down and were asked to leave the seating area altogether. The interaction felt abrupt and discourteous, especially given that we had arrived well before closing and had purchased food with the expectation that we could eat on-site. The food itself was average, but the poor customer service and inconsistent messaging about seating left a much stronger impression than the meal. There are other better places. Skip.

Everything arrived at once rather than in courses, but it didn't take away from the experience. Every dish was packed with flavor. The aloo pies had a taste reminiscent of samosas :: crispy on the outside with a warmly spiced filling :: and were served with a tangy chutney that complemented them perfectly. The jerk chicken was the standout. Tender, juicy, and beautifully seasoned with warm, balanced spices :: it was easily the highlight of the meal. It came with rice and peas (beans), which were some of the best we've had, along with a simple green salad that surprised us with its freshness and bright citrus vinaigrette. She mentioned that they often have live music on weekends, which sounds like a great reason to return. I also noticed they offer an all-you-can-eat buffet on Wednesdays, and after this experience, I'm especially excited to come back and try more of the menu. If everything else is as good as what we had, we're already sold. Oh! I almost forgot :: my husband ordered a wonderful drink, the Trinidad Smash. One sip transported us to vacation mode, instantly! So good!

The restaurant didn't seem very busy the night we came in, but they did have a lot of takeout orders. We placed our order via QR code at the table and waited... and waited. There were a lot of takeout orders coming from the kitchen but those of us dining in seemed to be sitting around a long time waiting for food and drinks. No one came to check on us and since we paid on the app, there was no interaction other than being seated and having our food brought out. I'd like to try other dishes but will just order takeout from now on.

The service was really great throughout our meal. Our server was attentive, polite, and she made sure everything was good. We ordered a few items from the Happy Hour menu, along with the Carnitas and the Baja Shrimp Tacos. We shared everything among 3 people, and portions were generous and filling. Everything was tasty and well prepared. We enjoyed our lunch and service. Definitely recommend this place and would be happy to come back!

The restaurant has a cozy vibe with patio seating during warmer days. We chose to sit inside as it was a bit chilly that day. We ordered the scrambled eggs with steak, eggs Benedict and shrimp tacos. All dishes were great and freshly made. The highlight was their salsa and chips they provide as complementary. The salsa is amazing! Not sure what it is made of - not spicy at the same time full of flavor. Will go back mainly for that salsa. Finally about the service, the people are very friendly and patient. Overall a great experience and will definitely visit again.
