This restaurant had bad food and bad service. The menu options were very limited and I had trouble finding something I wanted. I asked if they could do egg whites and they said no, they use egg beaters. So, I ended up with the Mediterranean salmon salad without the dressing, olives or feta. We waited 55 minutes for food. It turned out that the owner actually went in and started making our food without telling the cook she was doing it, so there were duplicates of our food and we would have gotten it a lot sooner had she not messed up. The good part of that was, our food came out faster once we had to send it back when they messed up our orders. I ordered my salad without dressing and there was; my dad ordered his sandwich with multigrain bread and they gave him white. My mom's food came out before ours and that was even after almost an hour of waiting. No one liked their food. My salmon was fine, but that's only because I love salmon. My family and I were in Coronado looking for a place to eat & none of the restaurants interested us so we expanded our search and found Calypso, which was about a 12 minute drive from Coronado. Service is very quick, we were seated right away and got our food quickly. The woman that greeted us helped us with the menu and recommended that whatever we get that we should get the pancakes. I ordered the Islander omelet and a stack of pancakes. I'm not one to order or eat fluffy pancakes, but the pancakes here are so delicious! They are fluffy, light, and have a sweetness to them that make them taste so good! The islander was delicious also. It's stuffed with cheese, tomato, and turkey and topped with avocado. It was cooked to perfection! And the potatoes that came with the omelette were a good portion and crunchy on the outside and so soft in the inside! Plus, the view is so pretty! I usually order the Italy express because it reminds me of the fat sandwiches my uncle used to make with salami capocollo and mortadella from the local Italian deli. It's legit! While visiting San Diego, my family (4 people) went to this café for breakfast around 11 o'clock, after reading Yelp reviews and thinking that this café is a full serving restaurant. The lady at the front instructed us to order at the front from the menu on the wall. I showed the lady some photos of the dish I found from one of the Yelp reviews. She said the food was on her dinner menu and that she does not serve during lunchtime. From the minute I walked in this place until we set down for a table after ordering at the counter, I got the impression that she didn't really want to serve us. She was so cold and rude that we wanted to cancel our order and leave. We were very reluctant to have our last day meal at this place in such an atmosphere. We drove about 20 minutes to get to Coronado Island from downtown, and we had to head back to Los Angeles by 4pm to catch an airplane, so we decided to order three food items to munch on just for soothing our hunger for everyone and then have lunch somewhere else on the way up. We ordered Huevos Rancheros, Atlantic Salmon Mediterranean, and the Benedict Muffin. I asked for some hot water, and she said water is self-serving and that she does not serve hot water. She came out with the big plates of two entrées and a bowl of the salad. We asked for small share plates, but we were told that normally she would charge for each share plate. Instead of the requested share plate, she said she would bring two spoons and raved about it: "These are good for serving". I was astonished how rude her tone of voice was to her customers. The table was not set up with utensils. All the food we had was saltier than other places we dined at in San Diego. The Hollandaise sauce tasted especially creamy and greasy. I have seen restaurants that charge for split plates; however, I have never seen nor heard of a single restaurant that charges for share plates. Is that a Coronado Island thing? Though I understand in a sense that high-class restaurants would have to charge if fewer entrees are ordered than the number of people who is dining in. She could have been the owner of the business who sets up her own set of rules when it comes to serving her food. I have a feeling that she is so stingy that she could have charged us for one more set of utensil because we only ordered three food items when four people were eating, haha. This is the worst place I have ever tried in San Diego. More than anything, I don't want to deal with this lady's attitude and rudeness ever again. I will never come back! read more
