I went into this cafe intending on ordering lunch. I asked if they had a restroom available. The woman who I asked seemed irritated that I needed to use the restroom and was very rude. When I returned the key i asked the young man behind the counter if she was the owner. He replied yes. I decided I didn't want to contribute to her business due to her ill manner. Tonight was my first time at Calypso Cafe and all I can say is what an amazing experience I had! Owner Hanan was very warm and welcoming and really added that personal touch as she walked table by table and made sure our dinner was perfect. Our server Dago was friendly and very attentive to our needs, he made our dinner very pleasant and made great recommendations ( Sangria and Paella). The Paella was amazing and even though it was a busy night Chef Jorge Gonzalez was meeting customers and making sure everyone was enjoying their dinner. The reason im giving five stars to this Restaurant is because the Paella was delicious, the staff was very welcoming and committed on providing outstanding service, in addition to the amazing food the patio has an amazing view, this place is a must!!! read more

Went here to get a bottle of wine for a gondola tour of the bay. Paid $27. The wine tasted like sewage, it went bad. After one sip took the wine back and the manager refused to give me a refund or to substitute a different bottle. Very poor form, I will not be coming back or recommend this place. read more

We have lived in Coronado for about a year now and have yet to try a local hole in the walk breakfast joint. My sister found this place through Yelp and seemed like a good place to eat at due to the positive feedbacks from others. Well I wish I can say the same. The service was pathetic and the server had no idea what was in the menu let alone how to communicate with customers. The manager was rude and hated criticism about her food (more on that later). The place it self looked disgusting (despite the view). The cups were dusty. The utensils were rusty and had dried up food stuck in it. The tables weren't cleaned. The coffee was cold. The presentation on the food could be a lot better instead of slapping the food on the plate, show a little class. You're feeding the people and tourist of Coronado after all! Back to why I'm writing this in the first place. We had ordered a two big plates, a breakfast burrito, a breakfast sandwich and a side of pancakes. Pancakes were delish, so fluffy that even my picky toddler who never eats pancakes ate it! The breakfast sandwich was okay according to my Step Father, but ordering it was a pain. The server didn't even ask us if we wanted it on a bagel or toast and how we liked our egg. We ended up having to go back to the cashier and making sure she got our order right (for the third time). The big plates we ordered came with cold bland 'house potatoes' and NO toast. The burrito I had ordered was pretty good, but towards the end I saw a black hair squished between potatoes and the tortilla. I felt sick to my stomach and wanted to puke knowing I had eaten a majority of my food and someone else's hair was chillin in my food! When we paid for our bill, we had brought the burrito to show the manager and she was in denial and not apologetic at all. She kept saying this has never happened and the hair wasn't there. By the time she toon apart the burrito in her hair ..it would've fallen out no doubt. She claims it was OUR hair and mind you we all colored our hair brown and blonde so there's no way that black hair was ours! And like I said, it was squished between the potatoes. She threatened my family that she'd call the security after she made a scene. She made sure no one knew as she waited till all her customers were outside and out of ear shot to hear what we had to say. After eating here and having bad exoerience , I read previous Yelp reviews and there are several ones regarding management and how rude, unapologettic and not willing to please customers or solve problems that happen in her establishme. Welcome to the only restaurant where the customers are not always right ...according to the manager! To anyone who decides to come here ..make sure you check your food first no matter how good it looks! read more

It's unfortunate to have to write this review, because we LOVE the owner, want to support this place, and have been trying for a couple years now, but Calypso is far too unreliable. This experience was the last straw. Called ahead to place an order (a breakfast burrito) and side of potatoes. Arrived 20 minutes later to find that they had forgotten the order and that they were out of potatoes. Was asked if I still wanted the burrito (which has potatoes in it) and, if so, if they could instead substitute sweet potato tatter tots in the burrito and as a side. I agreed, because at this point I was invested in getting something to eat, then waited another 15 minutes. During this time, I witnessed the wrong order brought to a table, and another person be informed (after his meal was made and given to him) that Calypso was out of some of the ingredients meant to be in the meal. He left angry. By the time I got the burrito and side of tatter tots, what was presented to me was, effectively, 10 tatter tots ($3.50) and a burrito missing additional ingredients. They agreed to refund the meal, but what a waste. Unfortunately, of the last dozen or so times we've come here, there were only a handful of times where things went smoothly. I wish the best in the future to this establishment, but I would not currently recommend them. read more

Cute little cafe- we sat outside overlooking the bay. Tip is to get here before 10am. When we came at 9:30am on a Sunday, we were the only ones here. By 10am they were packed. The owner is gracious, the food was absolutely delicious. We had the Greek omelette, huevos rancheros, Benedictine, choc chip pancakes, & side of applewood bacon, all served family style. We went here in between soccer tournaments...looked cute and was a convenient location...what a mistake:( we waited over 45min just to put order in...-and waited another 45 for food that we never ended up getting because we ran out of time...the owner was very rude..people were being served undercooked bacon and the owner was yelling at them that it was not raw...after waiting almost 2hrs to get food the owner told me to sit down, and that my food would not be ready for at least another 20min...we got our money back and left realizing we would not be eating before my son's next game...nice location but horrible customer service and very rude owner...DO NOT eat here when they are busy. First, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. You can sit outside and soak up the sun while over viewing the little lake. And there's a beautiful park around the corner so you can even walk off your meal for a little exercise ;]. Second, the service was wonderful. I've forgotten the owners name, but when I told her I was a vegetarian she said to sit back cause she'd take care of my meal herself. And she sure did! Which goes into my third point: SOOO DELICIOUS! She made me a veggie wrap, and idk what she put in there but it was fresh, and flavorful, and so filling! I had to stop myself from devouring it. Not to mention my mom loved the Mediterranean chicken wrap :] they even gave us chips on the house.. Free snacks are always a big plus. One of my favorite places to take my family for brunch. Everyone was so happy with the first visit and I have been taking them back every time they visit me! The blueberry cream coffee is amazing and the owner so graciously gave us some to take home! She also let us try some of their delicious bundt cake while we were waiting for our food to come out. She truly works hard for her restaurant to be successful. The views are stunning, the food is unbelievable and the prices are right. I couldn't be happier to find this gem in Coronado. I've been there many times for lunch (when it was a sandwich stand outside & the restaurant it is today!). I ALWAYS get a great meal there. My husband and I found this restaurant on line. We wanted to walk to breakfast and this restaurant is about 1/2 mile from Loews Coronado Bay Resort. It's a great walk or a quick bike ride through lovely residential neighborhoods. The food is GREAT, Fresh, and Delicious. I really don't understand how this place possibly has 4/5 stars. Everything we ordered ranged from terrible to mediocre. The coffee tasted like folgers, mocha was terrible, pancake was soggy on one side, scrambled eggs were runny and mushy and the fruit bowl still had parts of the rind on the fruit.
