Alright. The silver lining ... we are happy with the end product. Was it an ordeal? Yes. Did it take forever? Yes. Would we recommend.... Depends on your timeline. Here is the timeline: Feb 18: We called and got a virtual appointment on the last week of Feb 2024. Carlos was good. We had our dimensions and he gave us options with his fancy 3D software. Mar 4: walk through at our house. March 29: Closet install Apr 18: Return to correct issues identified March 29 w/ installer. Note, we wanted the same installer. We even waited a week later for the same installer bc we want to limit the number of strangers in our home. Yep, you guessed it. Some random installer came. He fixed one of two issues. He didn't even have the part for the second issue. Need to schedule another appointment. May 17: Third and final visit. All is well. As you can see, it took awhile. Customer service was good. I have no complaints. My only issue is it took FOREVER to get this done. As for price, it was cheaper than the Costco folks by a few hundred. Honestly, we probably would have went with Costco if the seller was not so pushy. It's that sellers pushy and rude attitude that made us come here. Carlos was awesome and not pushy at all. read more

We worked with the California Closet Roseville store just east of Sacramento. We wanted to install a Murphy bed in a studio apartment above a garage. Murphy beds are expensive and we also understood from a neighbor that "self assembly/install" options could take upwards of a day. We checked into a variety of options, many of which didn't seem to have California Closet's quality or ability to customize. Our consultant was extraordinarily patient with our agonizing over costs and options. We were at first put off that even getting an estimate required an in-home estimate. Fast forward: Our California Closets Murphy bed is installed and about a year old. It's quality is amazing and the bed itself is very comfortable (we went with their mattress as well). The built in side tables are very functional. Our consultant and installation team was very accommodating about including "non-California Closet" details like handles, lights and grommets for outlets/USB ports (we just had to provide them, including the right size drill bit). In short we got exactly what we wanted and needed. The installers were very professional, accommodating and skilled. It was an investment, but we couldn't be happier with the results. We were glad we went with California Closets. read more

Very helpful team and great results! Yes, initial consultations can take some time to get, but it is so worth it. Bob Holcomb has helped us with three rounds of closets now, as we have remodeled our house in stages. Every time he has patiently found solutions to make the closets do exactly what we want them to do. (Including the 7' deep closet that was only 3' wide--making that work at all was a miracle.) This last time, we found that none of our hanging rods were tall enough to accommodate pants, and the shelves above them were all "permanently fixed." I panicked a bit ("We spent all this time and money on closets and I can't hang up my pants!") But Bob said he'd come by and solve the problem. Just a few days later, he did just that--no drama, no nothing. He just fixed the problem. I absolutely recommend California Closets. read more

My husband & I had our master bedroom closet remodeled by California Closets in February. Although we were happy with the work, no one let's you know about the strong off gases from the materials used. It is so bad my husband hasn't been able to sleep in our room, he coughs wheneverhe enters the room. My nose gets congested & we both get a headache. The gasses are from the glue & materials used. Maybe also formaldehyde. A representative came out & washed down the cabinets. It was a little better for a day or two. So I called the company again & they ordered a vinegar water & lavender spray & had it shipped to our address. I sprayed & wiped down the closet materials twice. It still has an odor. The company also sent a diffuser. Nothing is working. My entire bedroom smells bad. We have kept the windows open every day. I honestly at my wits end. Let me clarify that I don't know what main office they were based out of. We are very unhappy & dissatisfied with them. They obviously know about the odor because they sprayed a strong orange concentrated spray after installation. We don't recommend this company at all. read more

My bf gifted me with the California Closets experience for Christmas. We'd been needing to upgrade all four of our closets and he surprised the hell out of me. Better yet, he had the closet designer meet us at the house and deliver the news to me. I was thrilled. She measured everything, designed the spaces in front of us, to our specification. We couldn't WAIT to have the four closets installed. Fast forward to date of installation. My bf took the day off of work to supervise the project. The designer and keeper of all of the notes critical to the installation never showed. The laborers put what they had in place and came up several shelves, hooks and inserts short. My bf, always the patient one, was placated by the fact that they promised to come back with the missing items. Weeks went by. My bf called and called our point of contact and got no response. Or, he'd get a response and she wouldn't address the issue at hand. She'd leave a cryptic message and would be unavailable for days after that. Five weeks after installation the installers came back with...drumroll....the wrong shelf and no insert. Really? There was a lot of head scratching and again a promise that it would be made right. A few more voice mail messages later and still no apology, no embarrassment over the confusion and no promise of swift resolution on the part of California Closets. Installing four new closets is no inexpensive proposition. Time, money, energy and a lot of emotional investment goes into the process. Not to mention time off of work every time we had to stay home to oversee the delays. Not real happy about this process. Sadly, everything was going quite well right up until install and then it's like our designer/point person couldn't care less about our happiness because she'd been paid. I guess she doesn't count on repeat business or referrals. Sigh. read more

Deciding to work with California Closets was a colossal mistake. Another family member recommended them based on a project they had done about 3 years ago. We decided to go with just a smaller hallway bookshelf unit before committing to the bedroom closets and rec room. On the first appt. the designer didn't show up and we had to call her several times ourselves to reschedule. We printed out a few photos of similar closets with features and hardware we liked, but during our appointment we were told that several things we liked were not available or told that it "could not be built that way", even though they were right on their website. We scaled our vision down as per our designers suggestions, but the final price was at likely 25%-50% more than we could have gotten elsewhere and we ended up with a very boring cabinet that doesn't look like what we had in mind. We are very unhappy with both the product and experience. The installers had to come back 3 times to get the drawers working properly, and one of the installers also badly nicked the finish and said that to fix it the whole unit would need to be taken apart and we would have to schedule another appointment to do it. We're just going to live with it because it's such a hassle to work with them. Bottom line is that we paid much more than we should have and received a product that's not what we wanted. California Closets is way overpriced and the quality and service has really gone downhill in recent years. Save your money and hire a contractor or another professional. read more

Short story- I was stood up three times for a follow up meeting, and they won't give me a price break for that. Long Story- I tried to use California Closets, because I'm about to have a baby, and the bedroom closets are woefully small and badly organized. The first representative met with me promptly, and sent me a design. After a month I got back to her asking for a second meet-up so that we could finalize the design and go ahead with the closet redo. She canceled the first meeting, calling and letting me know it was an emergency. OK. Not ok were the second and third meetings that she completely forgot about. No phone call courtesy. I called the main line and told them that a) I want a new person and b) I want a discount. They sent me a new person who looked over the drawings that I emailed to them, and finalized them. She had to check with her manager to get a price break. The follow up call on Wed never happened, but when I emailed today (Friday), I got a call immediately. Apparently I got a discount for a promotion that had been happening when I initially had tried to get my closet done with the first rep, some doors and drawers discount. HOWEVER, no additional discount for the pain in the ass time I've had to get my closets redone. I've concluded that they don't want my business bad enough. Apparently me spending 2500 on two closets, is not enough money to warrant appointments kept on time. I thought the whole point of using these people was for the service and ease. The original salesperson was a brand new hire who did not have command of his product information. He was kind but clearly over his head. The real problem came when a manager called to tell me that my original closet doors selection was not available and to chose another option., I did and called back to confirm my choice. That was 2 weeks ago . I have left 6-8 messages , asked for a a supervisor and as of today I still have not received a call back! I am done! We had two closets in our master bedroom, a walk in and a reach in, so we converted the reach in closet to an office, with new doors and a built in desk. We had started the project before Covid, but it has been great now that we are both working from home full time. The doors are beautiful, we installed frosted glass doors that are pricey but really add to room. Our apartment isn't small but in Oakland you definitely want every square foot to be maximized and this really did the trick. I would highly recommend, a beautifully organized workspace is worth the cost. The installers were also professional and always wore masks. read more

What a rip off! I spent $5000 less than 3 years ago for shelving in my walk in closet. They were more expensive than the other companies I looked at but I figured I was getting a trustworthy company that would provide excellent customer service. The initial install was ok - they messed up a few items but eventually it was all corrected. Flash forward 2.5 years and we are remodeling our bedroom and bathroom. My contractors carefully removed the shelves and stored them still assembled 5 feet away from the original closet. Now that the remodel is nearing completion we want to reinstall them in our new closet. I called California closets to arrange an installer. This should take no more than 2-3 hours. Guess how much they want to charge me? $250 to come out and evaluate then 30%($1500) of the price of the original job! Really? $1750 to screw in a few pieces? It is no wonder that this company has so many negative reviews... they charge a premium and then underwhelm when it comes to customer service. I had a great experience with California Closets. James Paris, our designer, came up with a simple but elegant solution for closets in our three bedrooms. He emailed me the designs within a day or so of being here, and then fine-tuned them with my feedback. The cost was surprisingly reasonable for a project of this size. He also gave me some very good design tips about how to paint the closet walls to make the shelving system stand out even more. He told me to expect about a 60-day wait for installation, but I was called soon afterwards with a date about 30 days out (there may have been a cancellation). At any rate, the installers showed up right on time, were incredibly professional, and did a beautiful job putting in the hardware. We now have incredibly functional and spacious closets. I was extremely pleased with the overall experience and will certainly use California Closets again if I have other similar projects around the house. read more

California Closets, a grossly overpriced operation, was a major pain in the neck in our remodel. They delayed the process ("It's the contractor's fault," was a pretty classy excuse, given that the contractor had recommended them), brought the wrong doors for two closets and damaged doors for two others, then a couple weeks later brought the right doors, but the replacements for the damaged ones were wrong. Oh, and the hardware was wrong both times. The frat guys doing the installation thought all this was hilarious. Somehow I thought CA Closets had a warehouse w/ their modular parts. No. When something is wrong, it's "We'll have to contact our vendors." If all you do is provide middleman service between customers and vendors, you ought to be a whole lot better at communication. I have remodeled the entire interior of my home. I decided to have California Closets do all the bedroom and linen closets - 11 in all. The designer with whom I worked was friendly, knowledgeable and did an excellent job helping me design the spaces. The materials are not much better than Home Depot. The melamine does not even go to the edge on some of the shelves. The workmanship is spotty. Some shelves do not go all the way to the back or side. I'm willing to accept some leeway because not all walls are perfectly straight, but when a shelf does not touch at all, it's simply was not cut correctly. Further, the workers do not do any caulking to hide the gaps and if they are not sent with spacers, forget it! It's your problem. I had a very simple job today. The wood was cut at least 1/4" to 3/8" too short - another gap. I don't know if what I have experienced is the result of COVID and the labor shortage, but I will not use of recommend California Closets again. There should be more pride in the job, and that is more than a reflection of the individual workers, it is a lack of training and oversight by the company. read more

The craftsmanship and the materials used appear to be very nice. The two-man crew laid down heavy moving tarps across my new hardwood floors. They took care not to damage anything. They were prompt to complete the two closets over about 5 hours. The closets were odd shaped in a condo unit. Plus the older construction made the walls off here and there. But no worry, they have neat side filler strips to fill the gaps. It gave a nice finished look. There is so much usable space now. From the time I measuring appointment, to upcoming date, and even after, this CC keeps you updated via calls and email. Their communication was excellent. Call backs from the rep was outstanding. She gave her mobile number to me to call anytime. I couldn't sleep at 2 am, she's there to answer a closet question. Just kidding but you get me. My wife and I could not be more please with the service, from layout to completion. I highly recommend CC and will use them again. read more

Our existing closet systems are approaching 12 years old now so when my daughter accidentally damaged one of our storage front doors when driving into the garage I reached out tho California Closet. I seemed to recall they installed them originally, however when I went through my old records I discovered that they were installed by Closet Innovations and later discovered they were out of business. I reached out to California Closets and they were very helpful. Claudia from the Walnut Creek Office was very kind and helped me place an order with the CC Berkeley manufacturing office on 4th st.. Today (2 days after placing the order) I drove to the Berkeley office with a copy of the door I needed replaced. Much to my surprised, they (Caity, Elyse, Teesha, Gabrielle), not only told me the work would be done while I waited but said there would be no charge. What a pleasant experience. There were options that we were not aware of, like hidden keyboard. The installers were very courteous and got the job done right. CONSIDER ANOTHER COMPANY. We selected California Closets to refit two closets with organizers. They were the most expensive estimate (almost $7600) but we convinced ourselves due to their size and longevity that they must be the best and therefore most likely to give us the best experience. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way. Bob, our design consultant, started out very professional and provided excellent designs for our closets. We discussed the issue of the prep work. We were clear that we didn't want to do it ourselves. While he said they only spackle and paint he did not discourage us from using their preparation services. His only comment was that many people do it themselves to save money. I can see why as they wanted over $500 to remove existing traditional shelving. Still, we decided to let them handle it. In for a penny, in for a pound, eh? Next we found out we would have to wait over two months for an installation appointment but they still insisted on sitting on half our money during the extended wait. One thing that we considered (and asked California Closets about) was how they could do the prep work and install the organizers in one day. We were assured it was no problem and they had plenty of experience at this. Finally, install day comes. While they were in fact in and out in a day and the organizer materials and installation are of acceptable quality, we were left with an unbelievably poor preparation job. You can even see the original carpenters marks left behind after the removal of the old shelving (see picture). To say we were surprised is an understatement. We spent the next three days trying to "patch" the prep work which was very difficult with the organizers in place. We contacted Bob from California Closets and of course the back pedaling started. It was all of a sudden our fault that they did not have enough time to do an adequate preparation job as they had to be in and out in the same day. Our expectations were obviously too lofty. Why would a company specializing in closet refit be capable of doing competent preparation? Bob saw that we take pride in our home and in fact were ordering very expensive organizers so why would anyone assume we would be satisfied with an incompetent preparation that remains clearly visible once the organizers are installed? Why would a company who was not competent to do it sell those services? While finally admitting that perhaps the job did not meet their standards we were asked what would make it right. We explained that refunding the prep fees (over $500) and crediting us back an equal amount for the time we had to spend doing the job they should have done in the first place (by the way, paint and spackle was all we used). They offered to refund $250. We considered this an insult rather than an honest attempt to mitigate the poor quality workmanship. This is not how a company (especially one charging top dollar) shows dedication to their customers. We are very disappointed and it goes without saying we will not use California Closets again, nor recommend them. In fact we will actively recommend that people consider other companies. read more

California Closets - I thought this company was the pinnacle of custom closet solutions. We were so wrong! Wanting to take advantage of the February 20% off and free upgrade, we met with our sales person at our home for measurements then again at the Berkeley showroom to finalize the design. We were told we would receive the contract and final design for approval in a couple of days. As each week progressed we were told we would have everything in the next day or two. Now a month later, no designs or contract. Apparently they have too much business to handle a $5500.00 closet install. If you're looking for a first class experience, I would not choose California Closets in Berkeley. Totally disappointed in the poor service. california closets in roseville (yuk) came out and sent an old crimudgin ..he was snippy at best .. but i decided i loved the design they came up with ....2 hrs later i was told to look for an email the next day .. after several attempts to get this email.. the sales man either had my email addy wrong .. then 3 times he forgot to add the pdf,S to see plans .. then the deposit situation he told me and the method of the way things would work were completely different than how they actually went.... when i finally got ahold of this old crimudgin .he snapped that it took me too long to get back to him .(hence his errors ) i then told him that the deposit situation was a bit different than he had told me at the (time of sale) his reply "well you shouldn't have paid it " .. wow! really .?so anyway things finally did roll along . not at all as i was told, finally 3 days after paying half 2900 dollars down i got a call from the installer .(only after i had to encounter that old crimudgin ..) so the installer and i came up with the date and time .. and i was finally happy .. the next morning i got an email .explaining the ins and outs of what to do the day of install and what to expect.. later that afternoon i got an email from some unprofessional woman saying they refunded my money and no longer wanted my business. (they didn't feel they could make me happy ) i have made several attempts calling the corporate headquarters etc... all they will do is reply back like cowards ,with standard email... I have sold my desk and ordered a queen size mattress as per the old crimudgin's advice .. I would never do business with this unprofessional operation again .. not to mention there competitors are as good or better and way more affordable read more

I chose California Closets because of their quality and design. I worked with Nancy Hall and she was very responsive when we were going over the designs and what not. The installation went well and overall looked nice at a quick glance. Upon looking further, the measurement was off and resulted in 0.75-1 inch gap on each side of the closet. Once I have a problem, it took many days and emails to even get a response. After two months, they finally sent people over to fix the gap. Unfortunately, they wanted to do a quick fix by jamming a filler on the opposite side of the gap to shift the whole closet to cover the gap. The end result was about 2.5-3 inches of wood (3 planks) on wide side and 0.25 inch remained in the gap. The closet now looks even more hideous. I asked the installer to remove it at once and he quickly removed it and put the closet back. Now the closet has gaps on both sides and the hangers and shelves are crooked. He refused to level it stating that the closet wasn't measured appropriately and that it should have never been installed in that state at all and left abruptly. I emailed both Nancy and Rich Cook, supervisor at California Closets, after the second installer left and they did not respond. I called their office to talk to them and the customer service person initially stated that Rich was in the office next to her and said that he will get her. 5 minutes later, she came back saying that he's not available. However, I heard their conversation when they put me on hold. She said that someone will call me in a couple hours. Well it has been many hours and they have not. I would give them a lower rating but their material and design were good. Workmanship is quite poor. Professionalism after they take your money is quite offensive. read more

The design consultant, Caren Antone, and her associates were careful and attended to the details to create an very good product, and the installer took the time to do a first rate job. Very satisfactory, all the way around, from designer (Paige) to installer. The follow-up visit to rectify a slight problem went very well. Communication was quick and clear throughout the design and installation process. It's been about 6 weeks and I'm still thrilled with how well the two closets -- walk-in and reach-in --are simplifying my day. It's amazing how good design can actually create more useable space without changing the actual size of the closets. At the same time that I can access all my stuff more easily, the bedroom closet has become a calm space that I enjoy being in. That's what we paid the bigger bucks for, and I'm glad. read more

I recently had my pantry rebuilt by California Closets. My initial experience was great. They came out and measured the pantry area showed me the designs that I could choose from and set up the installation date. The Installer and the Sales Rep were present for the installation of my pantry and everything went great, but there was a problem with the measurements for one side of the pantry so they had to set up another installation date. I wasn't bother by this because they were honest and forthright about it. However, it took weeks to set up the next installation. I let the Sales Rep know that I was displeased with this service and he told me he would forward my email to the Operation Manager. A new install date was set. The installer came out on time and constructed the remaining part of pantry in about a half hour. It looks fantastic! I emailed the Operations Manager regarding a discount for the remaining balance. I explained the inconvenience of my time and he agreed. He gave me an incredible discount and apologized for inconvenience. Now I'm writing this Yelp to say that in today's society, many businesses would have given me a 10% discount and called it a day, but this business went "above and beyond" what I requested and expected. The quality of their work speaks for itself, but the integrity and business ethics speaks volumes. Not only do I recommend this company because of the quality of the work, but due to their exemplary costumer service, they will also be my first choice for bedroom closet makeovers. read more
