Still a 5-star rating! I went to get my car's smog check at a different business. I was told that the car would fail because of a permanent code. Turns out the transmission needed to have a small repair made. I then took my car to California Auto Care and I told Urbano what I was told by the other guy and he told me to simply drive the car around 200 miles so the code can reset. We did, and then I took the car here to get a smog check- it passed! Keep giving these guys your business! They're very honest! read more

They charged me $51.75 for the smog check , it failed I went to fix the issue , came back and Miguel said they charge another $51.75 for the retest. This is the only smog check I've encountered that charges for the retest . STEALING YOUR MONEY . They should at least tell u or put a sign that tells u that . read more

They are my favorite longtime mechanocs. Have been coming here for 20 years and never disappointed. In fact Miguel helped me when my 2013 Hyundai Tucson's engine failed and he couldn't fix it. They would have had to replace the engine if they could locate one. He referred me to Hyundai first to see if I could get it replaced under warranty / recall. I was just over the mileage for the recall. I went to Hyundai Garden Grove and I was taken care of. Engine replaced which took 1 month to repair. Miguel saved me $$$ and regrettably lost a sale.. My 86 yr old mom has a 2011 Lexus Hybrid with only 50k miles (yes 50k). She contacted the Lexus dealer for the cost of 50k service... they quoted her $700 plus for basically an oil change, air filter change, inside a/c air filter change etc., pretty simple stuff! She was referred to California Auto Care by a neighbor. She dropped of her car in the am, they said 3 hours time to service, gave her a ride home and they'd contact her if they see or recommend any service needing to be done. 2 hours later they call.... I've searched all over Orange County to find the best auto care shop! My main concern was finding someone who wouldn't take advantage of a young woman and try to charge more! So my check engine light was coming on CONSTANTLY in 2020 and 2021. I did have what I thought was a good auto shop, but my check engine light always seemed to come on month after month after taking it there. As soon as I brought it here, Miguel took great care of my car! The check engine light hasn't come on since then (knock on wood). I have brought my here a few more times after to fix some different issues and every time my car leaves fixed. I appreciate the kindness of all the staff there. I wish I could give negative stars. I took my car in today for an oil change. When they called me to tell me my car was ready I couldn't come right away to pick it up. I came about an hour and a half after they called me. When I got there I noticed my car in the parking lot was on! They finished my car and parked it in their lot and left it running for an hour and a half. They drained my gas and hybrid battery. Not to mention my car could have been stolen. When I asked why my car was still on they tried to reassure me that it hadn't been left on that entire time , but I know it was. They didn't so much as offer me an apology. I've been a long time customer , but won't be back anymore. I at the very minimum deserved an apology or a discount on my oil change for all the gas they burned and they did neither. read more

Went here to get my under warranty battery replaced. These people charge $45 supposedly to check / test your car to see if the battery is actually bad; something that AutoZone does for free. The guy at the register says, "The employees at AutoZone aren't mechanics". Do really have to be a mechanic to load test a battery? A computer does that, and doesn't require you to be a mechanic. Long story short, the guy at the register said he doesn't know if my Interstate battery is under warranty and doesn't know how to check. Once I told him that I called Interstate, and they said all you have to do is check the sticker on the battery, he proceeded to tell me how anyone could alter the sticker, and how there some numbers on the side of the battery you can also check. I said oh so you do know how to check the battery. Anyhow, I then told him well then let's go check the battery, because I'm not paying $45 for a test, only for you to then tell me it's not under warranty. As we are walking outside, I asked him if it was his first time checking a car battery. He said no. I then said, well two min ago, you were inside telling me how you don't know how to check the warranty on the battery. He then says, why are you giving me such a hard time? I said because I don't trust mechanics, and you should already know that mechanics have a bad rep for ripping people off. He looks at the sticker on my battery, which indicates that it's about a year and a half old. He tells me how my battery doesn't look like it's a year and a half old, and how it looks much older. The funny thing is that anytime I'm under the hood of my car, I actually wipe down all plastic parts and occasionally my battery. So clearly he was trying to back up his claim of stickers being altered, so I'd have to pay for them to check it. I told him never mind. I left and got a new battery from Costco a few days later. Stay away from this place, or know what you are talking about before you deal with mechanics. read more

Would trust these guys for oil changes! Brought my 2015 Ford Focus in for its second oil change at 15k (first one elsewhere at 7.5k) at 8:15am on a Monday and was helped within 5 minutes from Miguel, who was super friendly. He saw I had a Groupon for 3 oil changes for $33 (redeemed with merchant and exchanged for punch card) and did not even blink an eye. Processed me like a regular paying customer and was quoted 45 min wait. Though he proceeded to tell me the car needed a synthetic blend which would cost $13 extra, he did not try to push it any further when I said I wanted the regular (which I believe the other place had used and which I think I read about on blogs). An hour later (at least 20 mins of which was spent on my car alone, including tire rotation), I left a happy customer, paying $0 additional. The best part is the car drives amazing now, in terms of handling and feeling the engine hp! Doesn't matter whether it's the new oil or the tire rotation/alignment, I am super pleased and will continue to get the next 2 changes with them! Thanks!! read more

Have been taking my car's here for years. The people that run this place are super friendly and the most honest repair guys I've ever seen. They never try to oversell you and they always take care of the problems. One thing you can never take for granted is a good honest repair guy. They are always quick and reliable. I took my car in for what I thought was going to be a major problem the guy looked at it and just retighten something and told me don't worry about it it was on him. Most other places would sit there keep it for a while told you they did all these things in charge you a fortune. For that kind of honesty they have had my business for life. Upon submitting payment to the DMV for my car registration, I received this message: "Thank you for paying the requested fee. Since your renewal was incomplete, a Notice of Incomplete Registration will be mailed to you within 2 weeks. Please follow the instructions on that notice to complete your registration." I scratched my head - what the heck did that mean? Naturally, I turned to the Google machine and quickly received an answer: I needed to get a smog check. I called my car magician... I mean mechanic and he referred me to California Auto Care. They were open on a Saturday, score! I called first to make sure that they wouldn't be swamped when I arrived, as can sometimes happen on everyone's errand-day. To my delight, there was only one car ahead of me when I arrived. The gentleman who helped me, Miguel, was friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. He explained the smog check process and that the DMV message was likely due to me needing one. Worried about my Corolla not passing, he assuaged my fears and explained that there was a very slim chance of her not passing the check. About 25 minutes and $40 later, I was the proud owner of a smog-test-passed car. Service: 10/10 Price (I'm actually not sure how much a smog check SHOULD cost, but $40 seemed like a fair price?): 10/10 I treated the Corolla to a car wash later in the week :). read more

Given they are state-certified for the BAR program, one would think that the person manning the desk all day would know that they were BAR certified; there is literally a sign hanging behind the desk when you walk in. Miguel, the person manning the desk and phones all day for my experience, had no idea what I was talking about. *I* had to explain that *this* particular location was BAR certified - No hyperbole, it legitimately appeared that this was the first time he had heard of this information, let alone the fact that this shop was state-backed for SMOG check & repairs. Again, there is literally a sign hanging up behind the desk detailing what I had to explain to Miguel. I presented official DMV papers that explained the issue I had with a smog check. Miguel had no idea what the paperwork was for, or what to do with it, so I had to explain everything. An increasingly relevant Better Business Bureau placard attached to the small wall next to the bathroom hung there. Curious how long it's been there, and if it's still active. This repair shop also somehow managed to screw up something that made it so my brake-lights would not turn off, even with the engine turned off and keys removed. Miguel "fixed" it, but even he admitted it was not a problem before I dropped off my vehicle. Given how difficult it was to reach & fix the problem this shop made, one would be hard-pressed to call it an accident. Funny afterthought - I had taken my vehicle to this location a few years back before this, for an almost identical issue (just not smog related). Lo and behold, the parts they replaced are also the major contributors to why my vehicle cannot pass smog. One can only wonder how up to date that Better Business Bureau placard is. read more

Smog station number 2! Smog test $51.75 I previously used this repair shop in 2016. 2 different cars, 2 smog checks, 2 years ago, without a problem. I drive into their parking lot on 2-28-2018 around 1 p.m. Walked in, waited for 1 customer ahead of me, gave them the keys and sat down to wait. A 45 minute procedure per customer service. 35 minutes later he called me up to the counter. Visual-Fail. Functional-Pass. Emissions-Pass. Technician Noel Burton claims I have a vacuum leak and an air injection hose must be replaced. I CAN'T HEAR ANY VACUUM LEAK! Wonder how come the 1st smog shop shows I passed the Visual test? Told service man, cant get it fixed today, gotta be at work in an hour. I ask him how much will it cost when I return??? Replace vacuum hose $45. Retest $32. Cert $8.25. After 2 smog tests, now I'm $96.75 in debt and still no smog certificate. On to smog station number 3 cause......... You don't want to know what I think at this point in time! read more

My husband went here on 1/9 to get a smog check. I must say that I wish he had had the experience that those of the 5 star reviewers. But I did get a phone call from him telling me the following: "They said that it failed because of the Airaid aftermarket intake not having an CARB EO decal. I called the retailer and they gave me the decal number via email to provide to them but they still would not accept it" I went on to ask him if anything other than that missing decal was the issue and he said no. That the car passed all testing except for the missing decal. I thought well that is a quick fix. We can call Airaid and have them send us one and this should be done and done right? Well my husband goes on to say that even if he has the decal sent that California Auto Care would not re-test the car for free, the best thing they could do was re-test it and give him a $10 discount. I've done many smog checks before in Los Angeles and in Anaheim. My experience has been that if my car failed they would re-test the car for free or at the most I was charged $10 to re-test as long as it was within 30 days of the original testing. I got the offer to re-test for free when I got the needed repairs with the shop. I would have told my husband to go to the shops we are familiar with but we have moved to the Cypress/Buena Park area so we are still looking for a go to Shop for our cars. Needless to say, the search continues. The decal will arrive in 2 business days and we will be going to a different shop for the smog check. I guess we can take the loss of the $50 as a lesson learned that this was not the shop for us. read more

I had just bought a California car after moving here from Nevada and needed a smog check. Came into CAC on a Wednesday around 10am and my car was taken in within 15 minutes and an hour later I was on my way. The only reason it took longer than the normal 20 minutes is the smog system went down and he needed to re-test so he could send the info to the state. Smog check Ripoff!! ($80) I had the same experience as another reviewer here. My vehicle passed every test except for their visual inspection. It was a very minor hose that needed to be replaced. Of course they could not fix it and they told me that I would be charged full price for a retest ($71!!). I left this place in the same situation I arrived in munis $71. We have been taking our vehicles here for years. On this particular morning, they looked busy - and I had to have the car back within 4 hours. They said that they could do it. Support these guys, really difficult to find a good honest shop. I have been to many bad shops because of sheer laziness and little knowledge. [I'm a woman.] Urbano provides courtesy service. Doesn't oversell and their daily rate for storage is really cheap $15/day. [that's a bargain.] I've got a regular guy who fixes my car, but I couldn't trouble him with a simple oil change because he's got so many big jobs. I just do these oil changes at these places.
