These guys are wonderful. Friendliest, most professional mechanics you'll ever meet. And fair! I've been to many dealer garages, corporate chain garages, and some independently owned garages. By far, these guys are the best. They talk to you like a human-being as long as you treat them the same way (I saw one reviewer seriously gave them a list of potential problems that he looked up online? What?! They're mechanics! How stupid can you be?). I did see a lot of reviews talking about their "lack of communication." There have been times I've dropped my car off and didn't hear back from them for about a day or two, max (rarely). I didn't fret about it though because, well, THEY'RE PROBABLY WORKING ON IT. AND THEY'RE BUSY. Novel idea, I know. Diagnostics can take time, and sometimes other jobs before your car can take longer than they expected... it does happen. Extremely unprofessional, Rip off, be careful!! My car's mirror got damaged while I was out of town and one of my friends took it to Calfo's to get it fixed. They said they need to order the part and will call once the new mirror arrives. After several weeks of silence from them, and several calls from my friend and me to figure out what's going on, I was told the mirror has arrived. When I went to pick the part, the first thing Regis, the owner, told me was that I had to pay an extra $21 because he forgot to collect taxes from my friend, which was not true, I even had the receipt to prove it. He told me that he couldn't find his copy of the original receipt and had to see MY receipt to verify the price. I took the mirror home to install it myself, just to discover that the wrong part was ordered. I called to the shop and explained that the correct mirror for my car has a very different wiring connector and there is no way I can use the mirror they gave me. This was clearly a mistake on their part because they had the car with the VIN number, and it was their job to order the correct mirror for me. They told me that they can order the correct one if I pay the price difference AND the return fees! They charged me $300 dollars for the incorrect mirror, and, when I checked the aftermarket company they ordered the mirror from, the price was only $100.25! Regis acted so agitated and aggressive towards me, acting as if it was absurd that I would need the correct part for my car. He told me that he needed some time to check price for the correct mirror, but when I called the next day, he was not available. He wasn't available a few days later when I came to return the old mirror either. After several more calls and days, I returned only for him to tell me that I need to pay $25 for the return fees. He said that he has to run his business and needs to make money one way or another, so if I don't pay the return fees, he won't process the return at all. After I agreed, it took him 30 minutes to process the return, all while mumbling under his breath and visually angry. Don't trust this place, they will rip you off. Regis is unprofessional and hostile and absolutely does not have his customer's interests at heart. read more

One star here cause the unprofessionalism was unbelievable. Dropped off an old truck just to see if it could pass inspection and wanted the E-brake reconnected and rear brakes adjusted. He said it would never pass inspection (too much rust), ok, I figured it was a long shot. But he lied and said they broke the e-brake cord, which they didn't cause they never tried fixing it AND they never adjusted the rear brakes. They had it a WHOLE WEEK. When I went to pick it up, he said, 'bad news, your truck broke'...I guess the frame popped when they lifted it, like I said, I'm aware it's old, but be a professional and explain it, he just wanted my work gone. He was actually mad I brought him my truck...THAT NEEDED FIXED! He could've explained things and gave me options. Instead, when I went to pick up, HE STARTED DROPPING F-BOMBS at me in his office!!! He didn't fix my e-brake, he didn't adjust the rear brake, and they broke my truck, THEN HE STILL CHARGED ME FOR THE INSPECTION, then I had to deal with him yelling and cursing at me, so he could collect his $40. Absolutely unbelievable. This guys an unprofessional emotional child who just wants to over change old ladies for brake pads. read more

I'm probably in the "easiest target to scam at an auto shop" category, so I tried to find a place that would minimize the chances of that. Everyone at calfo's was super straightforward with my ancient and failing toyota yaris and were able to tell me what was wrong, what options I had and the cost of those options, and their professional opinion that it may not be worth fixing in the long run. Straight to the point, which while not great news, was what I needed to hear after every other place just had me replace part after part to no actual improvement. And if I recall correctly, I'm pretty sure they gave me a discount to lighten the bad news lol. Later when I went to buy a newer car, they immediately squeezed me in to their tight schedule for a prepurchase inspection, saying something along the lines of "I don't want you to buy that car until we take a look at it first." They definitely care. Also the first time I was there, there were a few other girls picking up their keys in the office, and all the mechanics were super polite to all of us. Hands down the best mechanics I've had work on my cars. They do not over fix, work is done quickly and professionally and they communicate problems effectively. They do state of PA inspections. I have had them do brakes, tires, cooling system, electrical system, general tune-ups, etc. on several cars over the years. Schedule an appointment and work is typically done that day. Drop off is convenient to Greenfield, Southside and Universities. Can walk to Universities via the Hollow trail after drop off. The crew is friendly and helpful. Terrible service! Learn from my nightmare and go elsewhere. I've come to calfos for 4 years whenever my car (2013 fusion) had any problems. I recently bring car in for faulty sensor then immediately need to come back 2 days later for broken water pump. After 1 week of no contract , I call to check status and am informed that while repairing water pump, car was damaged by mechanic and in need of further repair. I'm no mechanic so they said something about timing belt slipping and causing damage but either way they said they would repair. I express concern with damage, that I want it inspected elsewhere, and they say they will stand by their work. I request written copy of damage. Again a week passes with no communication. I contact and they say now the driver door is having a problem closing. They ask if I have had any problems in past and when I say no, mechanic says, "figured you'd say that" insinuating in hiding something??? I say this is pretty wild and mechanic response with "I never want to see this car again". Like this is my fault? I finally pick up car and due to a death in the family my brain is fuzzy and i don't ask for list of damage at pick up. Now here we are, within a month of damage, car is unable to drive. I call 3 times and request written copy of damage and work performed. Keep being put off. I'm currently sitting in their office waiting for written list. They say it may be an hour. I'll preface with this with I normally don't like to write negative reviews. Here's an outline of how terrible Calfo's is: 1. COVID-19 is still a thing and all three mechanics at Calfo's who were in the small office weren't wearing masks. 2. I called two weeks ago and talked to someone for around 5 minutes and mentioned he'd be able to work on my car's issue. He was really friendly and booked me for Wednesday the following week. I showed up on Wednesday morning and the gentleman at the counter had no booking for me and said it was too busy to get in that day. He said he could get me in the following Tuesday. I was a little annoyed but wasn't in a huge rush so I went ahead with the booking. 3. I show up the following Tuesday and I talked with the same gentleman I spoke with the week before. He was kind of short with me. Anyways, I outlined the four things I needed done for my vehicle on a single sheet of paper. They call me back two hours later and a different gentleman says "You gotta come pick up your truck, I can't work on it." After inquiring why he explained "this sheet you wrote is just offensive. It's telling me how to do my job and the prices I should charge." On the sheet I copied and pasted from an online forum some very helpful and straightforward advice on potential issues I was having with my clutch for my particular model vehicle. I thought different clutches on different cars may have intricacies and it's not like a one size fit all issue on any clutch. I was getting quotes from all over the place for this $500 for a fix. Now, people on this forum were saying they could do it themselves for under $100. Unfortunately, I didn't edit the part prices from the paper I gave them. And I realize a mechanic needs to make money off of parts and labor. I also realize a lot of mechanics like the fact that a lot of people drive cars and many of those people don't know anything beyond filling their gas tank. I am pretty much in this category myself. However, instead of tinkering around and wasting their time, I thought my sheet would give a quicker approach for them. I didn't even consider that it could possibly "offend" them. Well, anyways, I find it hard to believe that this place legitimately has a perfect 5 star rating. Please take your vehicle elsewhere. Everything that I read about this place is true. The dealer could not figure out the cause of the loud metallic bang that we were hearing in the rear of our all-wheel-drive Buick. Rege drove the car for just a short period and immediately determined that it was the rear differential. I just moved to Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago from Philadelphia and I knew I had some alignment/steering issues I needed fixed. I had gotten a quote for about $1300 at local Firestone in Philly to get it fixed, but decided to wait until I got to Pittsburgh. After the guys at Calfo's inspected my car, they said a lot of the quote from Firestone was BS. They got me in the next day and cleared up my steering/alignment issues for $1000 less than Firestone quoted me. I have had no issues since. I always feel like I'm being taken advantage of when I get my car worked on, but not at all at Calfo's. Real nice guys who explained everything that they were doing. Go ahead and call your mechanic right now, and let him know that unfortunately, you will not be returning. THAT's how good the service is at Calfo's. They might not have all the bells and whistles that your Lexus dealership does, but they have better customer service and will save you absolute thousands in the long run. As for my personal experience, I contacted Calfo's to have some things checked before I ventured on an 18-hour road trip in my 7-year-old Nissan Versa. About 1.5k miles earlier, a well-meaning mechanic at an NTB informed me during a routine tire rotation that my front driver's-side ball joint was starting to wear. Said it would pass inspection, but as only going to get worse, and would buckle on me if I didn't get it fixed. Blah, blah, blah, give us money. How much? A thousand dollars. I don't know if I could have fled that NTB any faster. I know a bad deal when I hear one. Enter Calfo's. I contacted Reg through the message function here on Yelp, describing my situation and wondering how much the ball joint, an A/C that no longer blew cold, and a check engine light that I suspected to be transmission-related would run me. Reg replied within a couple of hours and invited me to call him to set up a time for him to look at my vehicle. Truth be told, I had contacted a few other mechanics, but none had quite the personality or desire for my business as Calfo's did. I called Reg the next day and his phone manner matched up perfectly with his written manner. I dropped my car off that evening, and he assured me that my car was in good hands. He even mention something I was already aware of, but shocked to hear an independent mechanic mention; if anything was awry with the transmission, Nissan had extended the warranty on the Versa, so I could take it to a dealer and get it fixed for free. (Btw, this shop is in terrific walking distance from Oakland, and I'm sure a bevy of other Pittsburgh East End neighborhoods.) The next day, Bob gave me a call. I am so used to receiving bad news from a call from a mechanic, that I actually get anxiety when I pick up the phone. Well, no longer. Bob called and laid it out plain and honestly for me: there was almost nothing wrong with my Versa. There was a small amount of play in the tire on the driver's side, and after some discussion, we decided it would be beneficial to replace the control arm now, rather than 10,000 miles down the line. You want to know what he quoted me, right? $270. I wish I could bold things on Yelp right now. $270! Folks, that comes out to a savings of 730 DOLLARS over what NTB tried to charge me! What's more, they found the check engine light had shut off, and the A/C simply needed more refrigerant, no $700 compressor part necessary. My car was ready for pickup about 3 hours later, but I called and explained that I wouldn't be able to get in until later the next day. They were totally understanding and accommodating. All in all, my total came to around $290. This was so tremendously well-worth it for peace of mind alone, much less much needed cold A/C, and a suspension system that doesn't panic me from time to time. All in all, I am just really upset that I am moving to Texas in a few weeks. However, I will sing the praises of Calfo's far and wide to all of my Pittsburgh friends for years to come. They always and only charge for the time it actually takes them to get the job done, and the prices are affordable compare to other places.
