I had a mixed experience at Bastone's, where I went (on an old family friend's recommendation) to get a wheel arch repaired. The positives were that they were able to get me in very quick and were, overall, friendly and professional. I do think they know what they are doing. The major negative was that the final price came out nearly twice the original quote: close to $600 instead of the original $320. This was, I was told, because an additional part had to be sourced and installed. While I was already disappointed in this unexpected cost doubling, the icing on the cake was that I wasn't asked if I wanted to proceed with the repair. I was just informed that the cost had jumped, that the repair was complete, and that I now needed to pay up. This suggested to me that the original assessment of the damage had not been as thorough as it could have been. While a quote is an estimate, not a certainty, it's not good practice for businesses that run on quotes to let customers pay twice what they were originally expecting. In this situation, for instance, I would have appreciated a discount on the unexpected new part. That might have eaten into their profit margin, but it would have guaranteed that I would become a return customer, whereas now, I am not so sure. read more

My daughter had her 2012 Outback serviced here on January 7th, 2025, to have her radiator replaced. They charged $616.21 to replace a $270 radiator that sells for $120 at NAPA. They also wanted to replace the battery for $300, which I declined, and it tested fine elsewhere. Also noted that the hood struts were bad, when they worked fine right before the car was dropped off. Finally, the shroud for the serpentine belt was missing after the radiator was replaced. I have a timestamped picture from when it was dropped off by AAA showing the hood struts operational and the belt shroud in place. It is almost impossible for both hood struts to fail unless someone forced the hood up, breaking the seals, and causing the gas charge to release. I just noticed this now when my daughter visited us this weekend - we are 4/12 hours away - and I serviced her vehicle. She had Bastone inspect her car last September with no issues. This incident makes me question their integrity and will not have her return again. In response to the owner's reply... The hood worked fine when it was dropped off by AAA. We have a picture of it opened. Yes, it now does not stay up, and upon inspection, both strut showed damage as if it was forced open too far. Two struts do not fail simultaneously. The battery was drained because the car was sitting with the 4 ways for two hours on the bridge prior to AAA arriving and during the tow. Her car was not driven for over a month while she was away. She took it to Autozone, who ran a load test and found it to be just fine and only required a charge. I appreciate the reply but disagree... The facts do not add up here. read more

I was in town from NYC to visit my daughter in CMU grad school. Dropped by because I thought I heard some weird noise on my Honda minivan so wanted to check out before my 6 hour drive back to NY. Bob was extremely nice and professional. Without appointment, he asked one of his guys to drive my minivan with me sitting next to him. He didn't hear much noise after driving for 5-10 minutes. So I felt much better heading back on the road. They didn't charge me anything for the check/ drive. Greatly appreciate it. Seems like a honest business that have been around for years. It's difficult to find someone that you can trust with your car and ensure that they're not telling you need things that you don't actually need. I was very happy to find Bastone not too far from where we live. I scheduled an inspection appointment online and they responded promptly. A week later, I dropped off my car early in the morning around 7:30, and they called around 11am to inform me that it passed inspection. However, the rear wiper blade was stripped and the battery was close to dying. I appreciated the fact that they were clear that the car required neither immediately to pass inspection, but it would soon. I ended up resolving both issues with them, because that was easier. Bastone was quick with my inspection and repair. I am new to PA so they did my VIN verification prior and scheduled my inspection then for their first opening 2 weeks out. With the inspection, I needed one of my tail light lens replaced and when they called they stated everything was $200 together, originally $300, as I needed my windshield wipers replaced too but I replaced them myself. When I want to pick up my total was $294. Maybe there was a miscommunication regarding pricing. But I assumed that with the $200 price they told me over the phone maybe it would have been slight over, if they rounded, and it would have been closer to the lower end of $200 when I picked up my car. The convenience of the service station is the main draw. I took my car for an inspection and the quote for repairs to pass inspection was just under $1200. i thanked them and took my car to another station for the same exact repairs and the total was less than half of their quote. The owner may try to respond in his defense, but in my opinion, proven by getting the repairs elsewhere, this station seems to quote on the high side for repairs. I came here for a state safety inspection. They were able to fit me in the same day without an appointment, which was nice because I was working from home with a cold that day, so it was convenient. The shop office is a little dated with floor to ceiling wood paneling - but in some weird way, I really liked it. All over were posted old photographs of family, friends, etc, and I could tell there were a lot of memories and history in this place. The inspection went fine, they didn't try to sell anything unnecessary to me, and I was given the same price I was told. Unfortunately, no experience actually getting my car repaired here, but based on this experience, I'd be happy to give them a try. read more

Bastone is the best auto service I have found in the US. I have trusted my car to them for all the years I have been in Pittsburgh and I do not plan on changing them. They are very professional, logical prices, and they make everything possible to meet your time schedule if you ask them for. They even give some perks for "loyalty" customers (e.g., free oil change for every 6 oil changes you do there - of course this means every 2.5-3 years but still). The also have a shuttle to drop you off (I have never used it but I have seen other people using it). However, because they are so good they are very busy too, so make an appointment ahead of time. So many of these places can be gruff, unprofessional, jargony, condescending. All of my interactions with the folks at Bastone have been great. They are professional, polite, and friendly. After dropping my car off (which i waited over a week to even do that) to get the air conditioning fixed, they told me i needed a valve replaced, but they couldnt help me because "Their mechanics are too old and dont bend that way anymore". I asked if they could recommend someone and they said "I dont know? The dealership?". Then they charged me 110 dollars for their "assessment". I went here complaining of gas smell in our car. I was already pretty sure that this was due to loose clamps on the fuel line, but wanted to take it to the specialist to make sure the car was safe, and no actual lines/hoses were leaking, or anything worse. Mechanic diagnosed problem accurately and honestly (no attempts were made to push anything else on us, or over-diagnose). The problem was fixed promptly, and the car was ready for pick-up in a few hours.Shop was clean, orderly and staff were straight up. Didn't feel like I was being manipulated or anything like that. Only complaint is price. I should say straight up I do not know the going rate for this sort of work in Pittsburgh, but once diagnosed (it is the first thing a mechanic would look for with this problem) the fix is very basic and would require no new parts except maybe a few new clamps (can be bought at Walmart for a buck each). Just locating and tightening clamps. We paid over $150 for this. So, in conclusion: Good mechanic, good job, good environment, but pricey. read more

I'm from a small town and have had the same trusty mechanic for 10 years. Pep Boys was my first stop... who tried to take advantage of me. My mechanic back home found Bastone Auto for me and even though they close at five told me to head over at 4:40! You walk in and immediately feel like you've walked into a real auto shop - where people are treated like people and they know how important your transportation is to you! Not once did they try to talk down to me or treat me like I didn't know what I was talking about... They showed and explained everything to me! It's great to have that small town feel in a city! This place is horrible. If my vehicle broke down in front of his place I'd have it towed to a different garage. I took it in for a simple inspection. He called me back with a mile long list of things. I told him go ahead and replace the two burned out tail light bulbs and tighten the control arm bolt that was loose. I came back to pick it up and had a bill that was charging almost $100 in labor fees for changing those two light bulbs and looking at another bulb!!!!! He didn't tighten the control arm bolt because he said it would need an alignment so he preferred sending the vehicle off with loose control arms. He didn't pass it for safety inspection and we settled as me paying for the entire inspection even though he will charge me another $30 if I bring it back for the other sticker. I hope this place gets shut down. I thought Los Angeles was supposed to be the city of shady vultures...I guess it's called Shadyside here for a reason read more
