I contracted Cal Tree Care to site and install a dozen new fruit trees. The owners are friendly and personable but that's the best you're going to get from them. They were consistently late, lacked communication, and the billing was slipshod at best. I thought I could overlook all of that. Unfortunately, instead of sending an experienced tree specialist to site my trees, they just sent a work detail that didn't speak English. When I asked him where each tree should go, he said "I like sun" which isn't exactly helpful but whatever. Suddenly they were all leaving. I followed them to the truck, and asked if they were going to lunch, or if I could pay for lunch, and they shook their heads and left. Turns out someone got butthurt with something I said or did. Instead of working it out with me or calling someone to interpret between us, the crew packed up and left. There I am with huge, expensive, unwieldy trees out in the open, being eyed by hungry deer. I didn't get the expert citing. I didn't get anyone to resolve the communication issue. I got blamed for something not my fault. Know what else? I got billed. Three of those stupid trees up and died and I still got billed for the entire stinking lot. Don't know whether I'm more sad or angry. :( ETA: The owner now states that his employee says that I verbally abused and struck him. This is new information which has come up since the incident; it was not mentioned to me in the subsequent phone calls. I have neither verbally nor physically abused anyone who has ever come to work on my property, ever. I'm very sad that the owner, and his employee, believes this, and I wish we had had the chance to resolve it. read more

Randy & his team are true professionals. A couple of years ago, they replaced all the diseased, dying fruit trees in our backyard with a one-year guarantee. They provided multiple options to get the work done based on surrounding environments (pipes, space, etc.) and provided guidance on risk/benefit analysis so that we could make an informed decision on which service to get done. On the day of the job, Oscar and his team showed up a little earlier to set up everything so that they could get started right at appointment time. They were professional and efficient. I've used Cal Tree Care in the past, so I was happy to find their business card in my desk. I gave Randy a call and he came by to see what I needed done. He gave me a reasonable estimate and I hired them. I had a holly tree that needed to be removed, a camelia tree that was 1/2 dead, a blue potato bush growing over my fence from my neighbor's yard, and needed to be pruned, and a orange tree stump that I wanted removed. Oscar and his fabulous crew arrived at 10:30a (I expected them at noon, but this wasn't a problem), and got right to work. It took a while to cut down the holly tree, but they did a wonderful job. They cleaned up after themselves, carried all the branches to the front yard and used a chipper to dispose of everything. They finished around 2:30p and I inspected their work. So the same day as my previous post I got a message from Randy. They did in fact let go of the employees that drank on the job and are issuing a 10% refund to us. It was never our intention to get people fired and we felt very guilty - but he reiterated that they all knew the company's zero tolerance policy and that it was an incredible liability to have people drinking while operating heavy machinery and driving their trucks. I finally had the time, inclination and a little money put aside to redo our backyard. My husband and I were in agreement that the tree (and most other things) back there needed to go. I called a few companies for estimates on the tree. Cal Tree Care wasn't the cheapest estimate, but their estimate included the most amount of work completed. Others weren't willing to follow the roots on the tree, but they did. And they offered to grind the roots on my lilacs if I was willing to cut them down before they arrived. The turnaround time was great. I wanted to avoid taking any more time off work, and they worked around my schedule to find a time that worked for me. The crew was thorough and cleaned up messes that weren't theirs! Imagine my surprise to go to the front yard and find that the mess left behind earlier in the day by an unrelated group was cleaned up. So, when it's time to tear out the boxwood in my front yard, I'll be contacting Cal Tree Care again. read more

Tom, Randy and the rest of their staff were awesome. We had a HUGE eucalyptus tree on our front yard about 4 stories high and they did a great job cutting it down for us and replanted two other trees in its place back in April. They showed up on time to give me a quote, was the lowest out of the 3, were responsive to email, showed up on time for our appointment, checked our roof when the job was done, cleaned up afterwards, and were very personable. The previous owners installed a tree house in the eucalyptus and it had a bunch of nails in it. Unfortunately we found out as Cal Tree were cutting it down and it really slowed the process. They didn't charge us extra for the added time and even helped us wheel some wood chips to our back yard. They helped us trim the street tree in the front too. Cal Tree Care just left our home and our trees look great. We had an ugly shrubby tree in the backyard that they removed. We had a gigantic orange tree that was super dense. They thinned the tree, pruned it, and shaped it. The guy really knew what he was doing. He told me exactly what he was going to do to the tree before he started the work. He saw how the tree had been pruned before and knew what he should and should not do when pruning the tree this time. Our diseased Ash tree was in dire need of being cut down before it fell on someone or something. My husband called Randy of Cal Tree and another company. Both company reps came out the same day, but Randy was forthright, friendly and professional (I only talked to him by phone). Emailed these guys with a pic to give me an estimate on a magnolia tree that needed a lot of work. Their response was quick and they gave me a round about figure before coming out to give me a solid quote. The quote was extremely reasonable. They had their guys come out and the work was done quickly and expertly. They even ground down two small stumps they noticed free of charge. And despite the fact that their wood chipper had given out earlier that day, they manually took care of the Immense debris and hauled it out that day. I want to make note that there was some miscommunication on the degree of work I wanted done and I called the owners (Tom and Randy) when it came to light after their crew arrived. Tom and Randy not only resolved the issue by not charging me the extra I was willing to pay but immediately drove out to make sure everything was taken care of to my satisfaction. This type of customer service is unheard of today. Bottom line these guys will do all my trees from here on out and they have my highest recommendation. Cal Tree did an exceptional job trimming and thinning a large ash tree in my front yard, and the guys on the crew were friendly and courteous. The two men who were doing the trimming did a great job of deciding what needed to be cut, and the laborers on the ground were literally running around the yard picking up what fell to the ground and trying to keep the job site as clean as possible while the work was being done, which was quite impressive. The company removed and stumped two big sick trees with two new trees replanted and nicely trimmed our three big and tall redwood trees for airflow in our backyard in March, 2012. This year, due to the Fremont 50-50 tree program, we had decided to remove two big and dangerous city trees from our front yard with the thought of the cost to be reduced. We recently bought a house and had Cal Tree out on two occasions, to take out 2 large trees, 2 medium trees and several bushes. Additionally, they helped to find the exact replacement trees we wanted and planted those. (This was huge for us as we could not find what we needed at any local nurseries, and we went to several.) Their prices, we got estimates from 3 companies, were lowest and they were the only one of the three that would remove stumps as well. Top it off, Randy is a class act and treats customers very well. Needed a peach tree stump and some rose plants removed so after research on Yelp called and spoke to Randy and he was able to come out the same afternoon and give me an estimate. However I had to knock down one star since the two guys that came out used my green bin to throw some stuff away when I had spoke to Randy about how they would haul everything away. I become somewhat skeptical when I see all comments with five stars thinking comments might be from friends and family. Well any thought of that is out the window after having Cal tree Care do some work on the trees next door to us. They ARE a five star company. Our neighbor has several huge Monterrey Pines that had not been touched in probably two decades. Ivy growing up the trunks, dead wood everywhere, etc. For us many large limbs overhung our property depositing a plethora of pine needles, cones and broken branches. It was a hot mess. The property owner (tree owner) contracted with Cal Tree Care to clean these trees up so I decided to have them provide me a proposal to remove the large branches that overhung onto our property. Their proposal was reasonable and prompt so we elected to "add on" to their work when they came out to do the originally contracted work. The crews did an excellent job. The trees look great and we have a chunk of our view back that we lost years ago. We are completely happy and will have them provide us with a proposal for one of our trees when we are ready. I can easily give them five stars...now I see why everyone else did. Top notch, reasonable rates, responsive, did what they said they would do, cleaned up after the job. I recently hired the crew from Cal Tree Care to take apart my extremely large fallen pine tree. The tree came down around 10PM one evening. Randy and Tom came out to assess the job within the hour. The next day I had the crew (Randy, Tom, Robert, Roger, and Steven) cutting away and hauling off the debris. The job was so large it took a few days. Tom came back after the last day to inspect the completed work and the surrounding area. He personally called me to make sure I was satisfied with the work. My husband and I were taking our morning walk and stopped to watch a crew of 8. Two were up in the trees and 6 were on the ground. We just want to let you know how amazing your crew was. They all worked as one like a well oiled machine. My husband and I were so fascinated with their professionalism. You have good men working for you and we can tell they not only were careful regarding the customers property but they also watched out for each other and no one slacked off, as soon as branches were fallen they worked together to feed them into the chopper and then raked the street and waited for more limbs to fall. You must be a good company to work for. We have never seen a crew work so well together and fast. You should be very proud of this group of men. This company deserves 10 stars, not just 5. This company did a GREAT job removing a 25ft tall tree that had a trunk approximately 2-1/2 ft wide. The roots were 15ft long along the back side of my cement patio and 10ft along the other side of my patio. Enrique and Manual spent 5 hours, non stop, working to remove this huge tree and its roots. i had a couple of Christmas (small pines) trees in my yard which i did not want. the previous owners thought it was a good idea to plant Christmas trees in the yard. it's not that big of a yard either.
