First trip to Austin and found this delicious little gem while paying omage to Franklins BBQ where I got a sharing of the best pecan pie that has possibly ever existed. Maybe it was just the best accompaniment after the most delicate brisket ever but I just had to taste more of these pies before we left.. without waiting the 2 hours in line ofc. Well we tracked the pies down to the SFC downtown farmers market on Saturday morning where not only were the fresh pies warm, but Melissa's golden personality as well! A farmers market stand with so many indulgent looking baked goods. You know it's going to be a tough morning when you have to choose between pie and cake! But thankfully, whatever you choose, it will be great. Key Lime Pie: It's a good pie when you can't decide whether you like the crust or the filling more! The crust was one of those graham cracker crumble crusts. Instead of random clumps, it was uniform coarse granules and a nice buttery taste. Thick too! The filling was so creamy with nice tangy bursts of lime. Didn't have any of that funky curd aftertaste, which is a great achievement. Chocolate Pie: Looked like it might be a soft pudding pie, but the chocolate was more like a thicker ganache texture. Very rich! Had to eat it in two sittings. The buttery crust and whipped cream are essential to cut the chocolate intensity. Texas Pecan Pie: A very generous amount of fresh pecans on top. Lightly toasted so not to taste raw but also not overdone. Tons of goopy brown sugar filling underneath the pecans to give an intense sweet burst to the nuts and to the dough. And wow, that pie crust was firm and buttery and delicious, a real great pairing to the rest of the pie and I'm not normally one to care about crust. Buttermilk Pie: Essentially like a custard pie, where the custard is very buttery and very flowing. The runny pie filling was great against the familiar firm buttery crust. Mom's birthday and she doesn't like cake. What does she want? Pecan pie. I don't have a good recipe for pecan pie. So I Yelped and found this place. Praise Goddess! This pecan pie transported us. It was worth its weight in gold. It was the best pecan pie I have ever had. Granted... I haven't tasted every pecan pie. My cousin, an Austin native, had multiple pecan trees on her property. We made pecan pies together. But THIS pecan pie was in a league all by itself. It made my generous mother hoard the leftovers and hide them behind the condiments in the fridge. For someone who is super picky of dessert I have to say, if I see their product I will buy! The best pies and scones I have this side of the pond. Pies, not overly sweet and the perfect bite. The taste is right on even for picky key lime eater. My favorite is the banana bourbon, pecan pies and key limes. The flavor is right on and not artificial, unbelievably good. I typically can get this at Franklins BBQ or at the farmers market. Scones, what they are well known for at the farmers market. I am skeptical of scones outside of the UK because that's where I had the best and in the states they make it so hard that I have a hard time trusting. However cakes and spoons scones are very moist and the flavor comes thru so well. I am impressed! My mother in law had it and loved it also, however they don't ship pies but would special order for pickup. I can't wait for the next party to have these goodies. Pies here are amazing. No physical location, though it is at the Saturday farmers market and Franklin's BBQ. The pecan pie was the best I've ever had. Tried the apple pie and chocolate orange scone, that I picked up from the Lakeline Farmer's Market. The scone had impressive giant chunks of chocolate. I couldn't taste the orange though and the scone overall was pretty basic. The apple pie however was excellent! Delicious flaky crust and perfect texture and sweetness on the apples. Stumbled upon this place at the Lakeline Farmer's Market and I'm so glad that we did! We bought a scone and ate it before leaving - it was so good we turned around and bought 3 more, a sausage roll and several quiche. Everything was so incredibly good. The scones were perfect. She had read about their Dark Chocolate Espresso Shortbread. OMG! OMG! OMG! It is like three buttery, espressoey, chocolatey vices in one! At five years old still without brick and mortar, instead opting to keep it simple and fresh at several local restaurants and markets such as Saturday's Sustainable Food Center Downtown Market it was to a wide variety of items and a friendly clerk happy to tell Cake and Spoon's tale that I was greeted and simply asking her what was "best" after a ten minute chat my attention was directed to a trio, the flaky crusted caramelized pecan pie I'd already swooned for at Franklin and two cakes just as good. I heard about this place n had to try it. I think it's called cake n spoon because u will want to spoon these cakes! I bought 30 bucks worth of stuff which pretty much is close to half my farmers market budget. And I don't regret buying a single thing. I got the chocolate cocoa baby cake, the lemon custard baby cake, the key lime tart, the lemon lavender shortbread bars, the ginger scone n a red onion quiche. In short: oh my heck! Everything I heard was true: their baby cakes were soooo moist! The flavors, just so perfect, the scone-- who would ave thought to put candied ginger in one? This place puts bountiful bakery to shame. Yep, seriously . I will splurge on cake and spoon whenever I go to the farmers market -- it's worth it for quality bakery items. I hope they never get a storefront because I'm afraid the quality might suffer-- and I'm greedy-- no one else needs to hear of their good stuff. I am getting really tired of places like Cake & Spoon, they have officially ruined me for any other bakery desserts. If I'm not dreaming about their Lemon Curd tart, I'm wide awake craving it. Cafe Caffeine in South Austin is the only place to get Cake and Spoon items other than directly from Melissa at the farmer's market. Since I work there, I've been lucky enough to try everything we get from C&S: * scones (double ginger and cream, fresh pear with cinnamon, and dark chocolate with sour cherries) * tarts (chocolate with hazelnut, frangipane with seasonal fruit, pecan, and lemon curd) * cheesecake (with seasonal fruit toppings) Most coffee shops around here get their baked goods from Quacks. We did, too. I'll say I never had a problem with any of the fine products Quacks offers, but C&S definitely kicks it up a notch. We're talking the best in town. read more

The aspect of selling baked goods at a farmer's market is admirable, especially in this day and age of mass-produced breads and baked goods. Heck, even artisan bakeries are commonplace now. This dedication to bring confections to a market provides a nice change of environment to your typical coffee and pastry at the local sandwich shop. Cake and Spoon takes a stand with boldness, wielding quiches on the left and scones on the right. It even offers some cakes and bars to boot. I grabbed some things on my way to a brewery picnic, and they made great beer snacks. The quiche has a nice crust, and the scones are solid and rich. There is plenty to try here, so head on over to the market and see what it is like to eat a freshly baked good with some coffee outdoors with hipsters abound. read more

Baked good are my weakness and Cake & Spoon is my kryptonite. Found them at the Cedar Park FM this weekend and managed to escape before I bought the whole booth (I was sore tempted). Beween two of us we've eaten a spinach quiche, a lemon custard tart, a piece of Italian cream cake and some flap jacks all in the space of a lazy Sat morning. This place is that dangerous. Everything was was fall on your face delicious- the lemon perfectly tart & smooth with a crust just perky enough to not be overwhelmed by its generous lemony creamy contents. The quiche was seriously one of the best I've ever had- not too dense but full of perfectly matched egg, cheese and spice. I'm already dreaming of sampling their scones next weekend. Cake & Spoon, if you create a storefront, you will make my dreams come true. It's difficult for my husband and I to make it to Austin early on a Saturday morning for farmer's markets as we are at Fort Hood, but Cake & Spoon is so delicious that it makes getting our butts out of bed early on a weekend morning absolutely worth it. It doesn't hurt that the lovely ladies are always so pleasant to us. We have tried several baked goods from Cake & Spoon, including the chocolate hazelnut tart, apple walnut cake, date scone and blackberry almond bar. Everything has been absolutely delectable, incredibly fresh, and perfectly balanced so that it's not overpoweringly sweet. Although we try to hit up new stands every time we go to the farmer's market, we make an effort to buy something from Cake & Spoon every time because we know we are guaranteed to something tasty. In fact, on a trip to Franklin BBQ we ordered lemon chess and key lime pies simply because we knew they were from Cake & Spoon, despite the pounds of meat we were already planning on consuming. The simple fact that all of my pictures of Cake & Spoon's desserts already have a bite taken out of them should mean something. I discovered Cake and Spoon at the downtown farmers market and was thrilled to see the stand again at the Triangle. I am picky, picky, picky when it comes to baked goods, so you have to trust me that their quiches are exemplary. The one I bought had greens and leeks, I think. Really, it didn't matter. The crust was so light and flaky and the custard had just the right silky almost jiggly consistency you don't find anywhere, and that's all I could focus on. I could substitute any add-in and be happy. Another nice thing is that one mini quiche can keep you full for several hours. Makes it well worth the $5. My kids had scones, too, but I can't help but go on about those quiches! I'll have to try other items on my next visit. read more

Quite possibly the best quiche in Austin, and well worth getting up on a Saturday morning and heading for the down-town Austin Farmers' Market. The Caramelised Red Onion one is particularly delicious. Only downside is having to queue behind people who don't know how to, and push ahead, and dogs. As of Nov 2011, $5 for a small quiche. They sell out really fast these days, so I recommend placing an order in advance if you know you'll be going, which you can do on Facebook or via email. You can now get their treats at Franklin BBQ and Hillside Farmacy as well. The scones are the main draw for me (ginger creme, pear cinnamon, dark chocolate orange or cherry, fresh blackberry...), and they beat every other scone I've had before - and that's a lot of scones. Other highlights are the quiches, key lime tart, dark chocolate hazelnut tart, blackberry almond and lemon lavender shortbreads, and anything with the lemon curd. The Chelsea buns are super sticky sweet, but nothing here screams "over-sugared". The baby cakes are very tasty and I love the flavor combinations (coconut cream, lemon poppyseed, sponge cake with homemade marmalade and buttercream...). Please do not cause me to gain weight. read more

This place is amazing. Every time I go to the Farmer's Market, I have to stop by the Cake and Spoon stall. I've tried a couple of their delicious items -Bourbon Banana tart from Franklin's BBQ... with the hint of bourbon, it was wonderfully dreamy and smooth. -Frangipane Tart. The crust is flaky and buttery and the center was rich topped with fresh raspberries filling. Once you start eating it, it's difficult to stop. Definitely do not eat on an empty stomach, it will just leave you wanting more! read more

OK people. One word. Pastry snob. OK that's two words. But seriously. I LOVE pastries/baked goods. Baking was my stress relief in college and I was there for 9 years. So I got REALLY good at baking. And as such I am a total snob because I make some mean pastries. So I am usually disappointed by the various dried out scones, danishes with canned fruit filling and ho-hum blueberry muffins to be found around town. But the Cake and Spoon is the REAL thing. The fruit they put into their pastries is fresh and comes in these huge delicious chunks that you can feel when you bite in to them. And the surrounding pastry, be it a scone or a muffin or whatnot, is so delicious you would eat it without the fruit anyway. I was introduced to Cake and Spoon by a chance rendez-vous at Franklin's bbq trailer. Dear god they make amazing pies! As pie lovers, we were not about to skip dessert, so chose the personal-sized key lime and pecan pies (the 3rd option was Lemon Chess, which we later cursed ourselves for not taking to-go). Our pies came with business cards from Cake and Spoon, who had baked these gems and who were obviously born to do so. We are super pie nerds, with big demands for both crust and filling -- neither should be so buttery, flavorful, or sweet as to overwhelm the other. It's a tough trick, but Cake and Spoon executed it beautifully. The key lime pie crust was a perfect blend of graham and butter, with a tart sweet filing that managed a perfect custard texture even in 102 degree heat. The pecan pie was a real find, though -- too often pecan filling is all corn syrup and the sweetness is totally overwhelming. Not so here -- the pecan flavor was outstanding, with just enough sweetness to allow the pecans to really shine. This is one damn good dessert. I went to Franklin's and bought a bourbon banana pie and immediately had to research where Franklin's got it from... turns out it's cake and spoon. I'm glad I found cake and spoon. FANTABULOUS custom work. She made my wife a pistachio cake for her birthday and it was magnificent!! She was the only baker in town that would even take on the project. Most of the other "Bakers" and sweet shops would only make a vanilla cake with pistachio icing if they would even make one at all. Melissa did not even hesitate to respond. In fact she said "standard or vegan?" GOTTA LOVE IT!!!
