There are a few places that make me giddy, and one is a cheese shop. This charming and delightful shop features a number of cheeses, and we should know, as we tried several! And who can resist bringing home...um...several slices? All wrapped snuggly in their paper blankets. The gentleman serving the group of us was friendly, knowledgeable, and generous with his time, as he patiently answered the questions we asked: where's this cheese from? Why does this one have a different color from this same kind? How does this Brie compare to this kind I'm familiar with? And so on. I can only imagine the amazing sandwiches and grilled cheeses that come from here. However this was dessert for me. In a town full of bakeries, that's saying something! read more

Loved my grilled cheese from Cailloux Cheese Shop! I got the gouda which was perfectly made. It took about 15 minutes to make, but the area is full of great spots to check out while you wait. Really cool shop. Staff were a bit detached from the service and overall distracted, but that didn't detract from how great the food was. read more

Cailloux Cheese Shop is a hidden gem located in Solvang. It's a little hard to find, unless you know the area. Tucked away in downtown Solvang and shares space with Alma Rosa, Alessio Gelato and other wineries. On my latest visit, we ordered mixed olives, a cheese plate and glass of wine. Customer service here was excellent! The lady that helped us could have been the owner but I'm not too sure. She was very good at explaining each cheese and such a sweet person. The mixed olives were a great little snack to munch on. They are briny and coated in herbs. The cheese plate comes with four different types of cheese. They range from mild, pungent and nutty. Each paired well with my glass of white wine. The cheese plate also came with fig jam, habañero jam, nuts, olives, and dried fruit. Well worth $22! It filled me and my son up. The cheeses are sourced from the best dairies around the United States and Europe. You can tell each cheese is high quality upon tasting it. They also offer grilled cheese sandwiches, escargot, Mac n cheese, soup and more. Overall, a great little spot to check out and escape from the busy streets of Solvang. read more

Adorable little shop with a very large selection of cheeses, we came here for lunch and the people working seemed very busy behind the counter. We both ordered grilled cheeses and soups, all of which was amazing. My nanni says the french onion soup is the best she's ever had. Wonderful experience aside from the service being slightly inattentive, but it doesnt claim to be a cafe. Definitely coming back, visit if you want good food and cheese. read more

To the business owner. I hope you're looking at your most recent reviews. Also, I didn't pick the wine off the shell. I pointed to the item I wanted off the menu and your staff brought me the wine but once at the registered, the price had gone up by 230%.! We were excited to try this cheese shop, but the experience ended up being unpleasant. The entire place felt disorganized from the moment we walked in. Prices printed on the permanent menu did not match what the staff attempted to charge. A half bottle of port listed at $26 was suddenly $84 at checkout -- a 223% increase. When we questioned it, we were told the menu was "outdated," even though the shop only opened in 2019. It's unacceptable to have permanent printed prices and then try to charge something entirely different. Even more concerning was the lack of basic food safety. One staff member was cutting figs with bare hands, coughing on them, and at one point dropped a fig on the floor, picked it up, and continued preparing food as if nothing happened. It was extremely unsanitary and made us question the overall hygiene and handling practices of the shop. We rarely leave negative reviews, but this was truly unacceptable. Until they address pricing transparency and basic sanitation standards, we cannot recommend this shop. Do NOT go! read more

The shop is small and it was hard to know who was next. I didn't get any attention until I started preparing to leave. I put on my sunglasses and the employee said "let me know if you need anything". After I had been ignored while checking out the cheese counter for several minutes. It felt half-baked. And I continued out the door. Not sure if they were just too busy, it was too chaotic, or if I don't look like I can afford their products. The owner is French and sounds well-informed and enthusiastic. I just was passing by, and came across this little gem of excellent choices of cheeses, pâté's, crackers, and much more, in the corner, surrounded by several wine tasting rooms in the square. Attended my second SB Vintners event here (money raised to support the true heroes of wine: the farm workers) and we really do enjoy this cheese shop very much. The owner is extremely passionate and knowledgeable and we've never had a bad cheese here :-) Bought a few Alpine type cheeses and this past weekend devoured two of them. Service is always good here and now I understand the wine is priced at bistro level, not retail. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and I prefer the outdoors here as it's not directly on the main drag, and sometimes there is live music from McClain's winery. We paid with a 100$ bill, which sure, you should always check, but these girls looked at each other like we were about to rob the place. Ive never seen so many wide eyes dart around each other before, like our money might not be good here. Told me they could walk me to my table while they counted out change. Never had that happen before. Went back to the counter to purchase a baguette and some escargot, I asked if they sold baguettes and homegirl looks me dead in the eyes and points at bread saying nothing. Diva, CAN I BUY SOME??? I picked one up and she said I should get the other one and I could just put it back, which I did, but like my fingers were all up on that bread, I hope no one got that one. When they brought the escargot out, this woman tosses the snail holder (she didn't throw it but that clank turned a few heads) which was like. Come on. Idk, bad vibes. Super cute little cheese shop. We tried a sample of blue cheese that was delicious and the girl who was cutting it and handing it wore gloves. We wanted to try one more cheese and a young red headed guy helped us. He didn't wash his hands, or put on gloves and I watched him cut and hold the cheese pieces in his fingers, then put them on a napkin with his bare hands. I opted out of trying anything from him. We saw the sign that said that happy hour is until 5:30. We were told NO to happy hour due to the kitchen being closed. This was super confusing due to the fact that nothing on the happy hour menu needed to be cooked. We were told no a few more times which was very disappointing. As a business owner, I have learned to never say no. The answer is always yes. We are not cheese or wine aficionados and we're not sure how or what to order. We wanted to try some different cheeses and wines and possibly some charcuterie. It would have been nice to have a friendly person to walk us through our options and point us in that direction. The girls behind the counter seemed annoyed by having to help us and answer questions. This place has a lot of potential, but the people who work here dropped the ball big time. Best lunch my friend and I have had for a very long time. We chose the Onion Soup - absolutely fabulous and a Ham & Cheese Sandwich with confit - so good. We split both and were very satisfied. The bread was a rustic white for the sandwich and it was filling and so very good. Our server was French and so fun. And she assisted us in choosing our sandwich. Excellent service! And fun stories too. The ambience was delightful. We sat inside among bottles of wine, beautiful artwork and cheese casings (or imitations?).
