This little gourmet shop is adorable and so many great foods to indulge in for hosting a party or just to treat yourself. There are many gourmet cheeses, meats, olive oils, whole bean coffees, wines and more. The woman behind the cheese counter invited us to try the cheese samples. There was a lavender cheese and the black cheese with lemon that caught my eye. I bought the black cheese with lemon. The shop associate told me that the black color comes from licorice powder yet you cannot taste the licorice, only the lemon. There were many things I wanted to buy but had to have control. I love that a mother and daughter team run the shop and I loved hearing the mother speak Danish to an older woman that is one of their regular customers. I tried to have a conversation about her cheese selection asking for suggestions and she was terribly rude for no reason at all. The checkout line was disorganized because no one knew which way to wrap around the awkwardly placed cash register. Two women were helping customers with their purchases, but not without one of them being super passive aggressive to the other. Her comments were condescending and borderline bullying, making myself and other patrons clearly feel uncomfortable as we glanced at each other, listening to this poor woman get berated. This shop has an enormous selection of cheeses and they often have little cubed samples. They also sell a variety of crackers, several types of salami, and offer a decent variety of wine. A fridge with non-alcoholic beverages sits in the corner. We purchased a little of everything for an afternoon snack. As the elderly woman checked us out in slow motion, I realized we needed a knife to slice the cheese. I was about to ask her if they had any plastic knives when she, without a word, nonchalantly reached under the counter and produced a couple plastic knives and napkins and placed them in our bag. She'd probably seen touristy folks like us make this sort of purchase for years and knew we'd ask. I thanked her profusely and she just offered a grandmotherly smile. Sweet. I lovvvved this little cheese and wine shop in Solvang. I love cheese and I'm from Wisconsin so I was happily surprised by all the delicious cheese from Wisconsin. I also loved trying all the cheeses from other countries. I just love cheese lol. I did not try any wine during this visit but next time I will. Awesome cheese, wine, and anything you could need for a charcuterie board shop in the heart of Solvang. We stopped in to check it out on our first day and saw that they sold to-go charcuterie plates for 2 for $18.95. Since we were planning on wine tasting the next day this was perfect! Important to note that, although the shop opens at 9am, the woman that makes the cheese plates doesn't come in until 11am. Unfortunately we were led astray and told 9am, so we learned that the hard way. Luckily for us they had some pre-wrapped cheeses in small portions that ranged from $2-$3. Ultimately we ended up building our own plate with what we could buy from the store. Our supplies cost more and had slightly fewer offerings than would've been included with the plate, but it still worked out. Really cute shop with a great variety of cheeses and wines. I would definitely come back and build another board. I just wish they would've been more clear when we asked about coming back to get the cheese plates the next morning, because we could've gotten the plate when we were there the day before. read more

I've visited here a handful of times now since coming upon this place over 10 years ago, but the past couple of visits have been less than stellar. The selection of the store is pretty vast -- lots of wines, cheeses and other shelf goodies. The cheese selection is quite impressive. The older lady at the main register is absolutely lovely and very sweet. Meanwhile, service at the cheese counter is pretty sub-par; it's been this way the past couple of times we've been this year. This time, it took quite a while for the two ladies behind the counter to finish up their personal conversation to ask details about our cheese plate, as we were given it with no explanation on the various cheeses. The service isn't the greatest, and the attitude could probably use a bit of an adjustment. Suffice to say, their customer service could definitely use a revamp. Also, since the door is wide open for customers to come in and out of easily, the cheese samples were sitting on the counter wide open and had flies landing on them (a word of caution on taking those). Would love if they could place covers over the samples as to keep them away from the flies. While this place was previously a must-do every time I've come to town, sadly will likely pass on this the next trip. read more

Wonderful place in Solvang to get a cheese plate, buy a bottle of wine and sit outside and enjoy the foot traffic and ambiance. The two ladies working this spot are incredibly nice and helped us pick what cheeses we wanted on our plate and even bought some extra meat to put on the plate. I usually love coming to solvang around Christmas time for the good vibes and I've stopped in this shop before with a good experience but this particular day I had a really weird one. My friends and I walked in and weren't greeted which is completely fine as the owner or worker seemed busy with other clients. My friends and I proceeded to shop around me grabbing a couple chocolate stocking stuffers and them picking out some sparking wines and such to try. Not once does any of the employees address us or ask us if we need help again not a big deal they just must be stuck in convo w these customers because she's being so kind and talkative to them! Cool whatever they get ringed up leave now it's our turn, the first thing she says is "you know you can't drink those while walking around here" in a very unfriendly tone. Which was weird no how are you, no how was everything no did you find anything completely different demeanor than the people in front of us. Which my entire friend group notice and it rubbed us a really wrong way. We don't know what we did for her to assume we were going to do that when it's perfectly normal for people to buy drinks and enjoy them on their property with cheese. But we felt so uncomfortable we just took them home and decided to try them at home. I don't know why that was her decision to greet us with that honestly I just felt uncomfortable and judged for something we weren't even planning on, treat every customer equally. Thank you Vinhus! We got to Solvang mid-morning to purchase some oil, vinegar, and wine as gifts. Most wineries and tasting rooms open around lunch time. Vinhus usually opens early in the morning around 9:30. Due to Coronavirus, they open later in the morning but it was good enough for us. They recommended a bottle of Firestone Cabernet which my cousin tasted last night and loves. And can't wait to try the oil and vinegar with some baguette. One of the must visit shops in Solvang. The variety of cheese, wine, gourmet food items is vast. They even have at least two different brands of Iberico ham. Their pricing is very reasonable. I ordered the cheese plate that feeds 2 people. I asked the lady what cheeses are included in the cheese plate and she said that "it depends, it's a variety" as she made the plate in silence. Then she just turned around and said, "It's nothing weird." She handed us the plate that was wrapped in plastic which is ideal for on the go. She then did a quick turn around as we looked at the plate and she named the cheeses that were on there. There was a "weird" aged green havarti and it was not good at all. We bought some Underberg Natural Herb bitters, a natural herb bitters usually taken after a meal as a digestive. These little suckers contain 44% alcohol. I also bought some Tabasco Chocolate. A bright red, brown-framed Dutch-style building stands extending a small brown sign towards the sidewalk with the words "Vinhus" in yellow, stylish wording. Inside is a rectangular shop filled wall-to-wall with displays and shelving and refrigerating units holding all sorts of Dutch goodness. Goodness like cheeses, cured meats, olive tapenade, some sweets, and other dry goods. The good bit lay within the left-most display with funky, creamy, spicy, dried cheeses and meats. The mood seemed right to get a hunk of german gruyere, sharp cheddar with chives, and slices of fatty salami. The salami: salty, fatty, with just enough of an intense cured pork bite for enjoyment. The sharp cheddar is indeed a sharp cheddar made more intense by the chives within. It's a good cheese in small doses for me. The gruyere is the best of the bunch. It's creamy, with a flavor that starts somewhat strong but mellows out slowly. Just simply wonderful and I need more in my life. It's a neat little market with kindly staff and impressive assortment of Danish goods. The meat and cheese selection isn't half bad, with samples at the ready to help narrow down what you wanna take home. I give it a good 3.5 (rounded up on Yelp) as it's just a fine store with some rather great goods. read more

This shop has great wines and quality cheeses that are hard to find anywhere else. With that said, having to write a negative review about a small business doesn't sit well, especially, since so many of them have closed because of the pandemic. However, the two older ladies that work here have a bias toward people who aren't Caucasian, and that needs to be addressed. This isn't some rant about racism, this is a detailed write-up of what transpired at Vinhus, and you can decide for yourself if what I'm saying is an exaggeration. I don't shop here often, but the times that I have, these ladies have shown their complete disdain for my presence, and I don't say that lightly. The first encounter happened when I was with my bf, who happens to be of Irish/German descent, and we took turns going in because we had a dog with us. Upon entering, he was immediately given a red carpet treatment and encouraged that he try all the different flavors. Less than two minutes later, I walked in and I couldn't even get a hello from them. There weren't other customers, and they made eye contact, but with zero acknowledgment. I walked up to the cheese counter and asked to sample the cheeses, but the lady with glasses was rolled her eyes at my request and became visibly annoyed. Her reaction towards me was appalling, and in turn, I lowered my standards momentarily and met her level of pettiness, and addressed her in the same tone. She slammed the cheese on the counter when she had to cut a piece which infuriated me further especially, since she offered my bf several samples, but didn't extend the same courtesy to me. She handed me samples of two different kinds of cheese, and when I asked to try another flavor she stated that I wouldn't like anything else in a condescending tone. I was livid, and it took everything in me not to call her out, but I kept my composure. I'm sure bringing it to her attention would've only fed into her ignorant perception regarding people of color. During the checkout process, this woman continued to be ill-mannered. She saw me waiting for her at the cash register and circled the store touching items and pretending to adjust them. I watched her and nothing was adjusted. She finally looked over at me and rudely asked if I was ready since standing in front of the register for a while wasn't clear to her. Since my bf had already communicated which items he preferred, I reluctantly purchased the cheeses, wine, salami, crackers, and some sweets totaling $172. She answered the phone and proceeded to have a conversation instead of placing that person on hold while ringing me up. She then handed over the bag abruptly like she couldn't wait for me to leave the store like I was some peasant. She did this without so much as saying thank you or anything of that nature. Furthermore, as I was leaving a few customers walked in, and she greeted them warmly and was friendly to them. I hung around the doorway to observe their encounter, and the only obvious explanation is that they all appeared to be caucasian. This wasn't a figment of my imagination, and that distinction didn't go unnoticed. I don't know if these women are owners or simply employees, but I hope this review makes people aware of what's happening here. As a small business owner myself, this shouldn't be happening in a tourist town. Bad days can happen to the best of us, but as adults, they should know better than to carry that mentality with them to a place of business. Customer service is what keeps your business alive and thriving, and sometimes that includes attending to customers of other ethnicities. These customers bring in revenue, and when you have staff that provides great customer service the result is loyal customers. While I can't confirm if these women are owners, I find it ironic that they would have this outlook when this town, was founded by Danish settlers. On their website, it states that the owners come from a lineage of Danish immigrants, and America is a melting pot which is how the Danes settled here too. Having staff that treats customers differently from other customers is detrimental to your business. These ladies need to learn how to deal with their biases, prejudices, and high opinions of themselves. Sadly, this wasn't my only experience in Solvang. For the most part, everyone is nice with a few shops that have workers that share this ignorant way of thinking. If this bothers you, don't support their business. Write an honest review about your experience and share it with others. Don't do it out of anger or retribution because then we become like these uninformed degenerates. read more
