Special- seafood risotto with jumbo prawn, scallops, asparagus
    Josephine F.

Comforting Italian food at this little restaurant. There isn't a ton of seating, so it's a good idea to make a reservation. I called around 4 on a Saturday and left a voicemail requesting a 5:30 reservation and was able to secure one. I was pleasantly surprised because it was so last minute! When we got there, we saw a group get turned away because they didn't have a reservation. I heard them being told they could get a table if the reservation didn't show up, but we showed up, so they were out of luck. I ordered the seafood risotto special. It was excellent, and they didn't skimp on the seafood. A huge prawn, a bunch of good sized scallops, complemented with asparagus. I finished my plate and wanted more! Two types of bread for the table, both very good. Service is a bit slow, but the kitchen seemed small, so not surprising.

They were packed on a Tuesday night and they were there for the food. The space is small, but they have used all the space that they have very well. I started with Butternut squash soup, was very good. Came hot, and smelled lovely while I let it cool. Was worth the wait, and gave me sometime to catch up with friends. The Sol was very good as well. All the desserts were really yummy. Our waiter sang to us a lovely Italian song. Will be going back again soon.

    Us at dinner.

We were fortunate enough that two adjacent tables were free so they were able to push the tables together and seat our party after a quick wait. Service here was attentive, and I appreciate the table-side cheese and fresh cracked pepper offering after you entree arrives. The top-up on the table bread throughout the evening was nice as well. The food was my biggest issue at Trattoria Roma. While the meatball appetizer was delicious -- super tender, seasoned well, and sauce was tomato forward with just the right amount of tartness, the pasta dishes missed the mark. The texture of the house-made gnocchi was not what I'm used to. When the gnocchi arrived, the gnocchi held its form just fine. However, no more than a few minutes into eating the dish, the gnocchi lost its shape and turned into mush, and the whole dish took on the texture of cheesy mashed potatoes. The pesto sauce I opted for with the gnocchi was heavily diluted and the whole dish needed more salt. My wife's clam linguini dish had overcooked noodles. It's a shame because the clam flavor was quite good in the dish. For a family of four, our dinner came out to about $150 for four pastas and two orders of meatballs. I wouldn't say this was my favorite meal in Downtown Petaluma.

Not to mention it's Italian and you can never go wrong there. After we walked in the Host asked us if we had a Reservation and we said no we didnt. He then said "Well let me go check and see if we can seat you without a reservation, I'll be right back!" After coming back a couple of minutes he had said that while they can't sit us inside they can sit us outside by the Heat Lamps, we said no problem. After a couple of minutes the waiter came over and began describing ALL of the Specials that they had last night and then asked what we would like to have to drink. My wife ordered a Ginger Ale and I ordered the Limonata San Pelegrino. Let me tell you, I think I have had the Limonata San Pelegrino before but last night it just hit differently. It was very refreshing and about 3 minutes after the waiter came back to ask us about our Entree's. I ordered the Eggplant Parmigiana and my wife ordered the Lobster Mushroom Risoto. Both plates came out hot, fresh and they were both very tasty. My wife let me have a bite of her Risoto. While it was cold outside, the Heat Lamps did a great job keeping us warm. The food, the service and the atmosphere was perfect for a good dinner.

I had a 6:30 p.m. reservation and even received a text the night before asking me to confirm, which I did. When we arrived, however, the person at the front, who also ended up being our waiter, seemed unaware of our reservation and didn't appear to check for it. He simply said he could still seat us and took us to a table in the back of the restaurant. The back area did not have nearly the same ambience as the front, which was disappointing because the atmosphere mentioned in several reviews was one of the reasons I chose the restaurant for a special occasion. I mentioned this to him but decided not to make an issue of it since we were there to celebrate. The pasta choices were also somewhat limited for anyone who doesn't eat pork or certain types of seafood. Several sauces contained a combination of pork and beef, while others included cod or anchovies. They were kind enough to prepare my pasta with a tomato sauce containing capers and black olives, but unfortunately I found the sauce extremely tart. The biggest disappointment, however, was the service. Once our food and drinks arrived, we barely saw our waiter. My partner eventually had to go to the bar herself to order a cola. As she was walking back to our table, a waiter came rushing out of the kitchen and collided with her, causing the drink to spill, including some on her blouse. He quickly apologized, but no one returned with a replacement. She eventually had to flag someone down to get another drink. We had also brought our own mini cakes for my son's birthday. When it was time for dessert, I had to find our waiter and ask for them. He simply handed us the bag containing the desserts along with a lighter. He did offer to bring us a candle, but we had brought our own. I certainly wasn't expecting anything elaborate, but for a birthday celebration I would have appreciated the cakes being placed on plates and brought to the table, perhaps with the candle lit. We also were never asked if we wanted coffee or anything else with dessert. Our waiter was polite, but unfortunately he was simply not attentive. I chose not to complain that evening because it was my son's birthday, we had guests with us, and I didn't want to put a damper on the celebration. By the end of the meal, I was honestly just ready for the evening to be over. One final surprise was discovering on the bill that there is an additional charge for paying by credit card rather than cash. Despite our experience, I still left an 18% gratuity. I normally tip more when the service is excellent. I really wanted to love this restaurant, especially after reading so many good reviews and choosing it for such a special occasion. Perhaps we simply caught them on an off night, but unfortunately our first experience was disappointing and not the birthday dinner I had hoped to give my son.

It did not seem like an Italian dish, but it was tasty. The garlic bread was really good and i love the cheese on it. The eggplant Parmesan was different than others I have tried. It's served like two big pieces of eggplant that have been breaded, fried, and covered in melted cheese and marinara. It was delicious! It came with some spaghetti and marinara. Speaking of their marinara, it's a sweet and chunky style that tastes totally homemade. It's not the kind of marinara I grew up with but I liked it a lot. The best dish was their bolognese. I love the flavors in this dish. A good bolognese tastes likes its been summed for hours and this had that wonderful home cooked quality. Next time, I will have dinner at the restaurant. The menu is on the smaller side - a few options each of appetizers, salads, pastas and entrees - and a couple of specials. We went with the bruschetta trio (the winner of the entire meal) and chose the traditional, the prosciutto and the salmon of which the traditional was the favorite. The entrees were ok. I went with the chicken piccata which was not prepared in the traditional manner of pan-frying the chicken; I'm guessing by its white anemic color it was maybe poached separately first before being added to the piccata sauce. The sauce was missing the acidity of white wine and lemon (although I'm sure they were in there) and even the capers couldn't help punch up the flavor. Between the underwhelming seasoning/flavor and the chicken missing that crispy exterior the dish just didn't deliver. My partner's salmon pasta Alfredo was also just ok, again it could have used more seasoning and the sauce was so watery it was impossible to get it to coat the fish and the pasta. I can see why a lot people enjoy Sugo - the food is good enough relative to the very reasonable menu prices and the staff is great; just know that at least some of the dishes deviate from the traditional preparations. Next time I'd stick with the bruschetta and add a salad to round out the meal.

Service - the gal behind oysters bar was very skilled, very informative, and kept the food comin'. She created I wish I could call her out by name but it wasn't on the receipt that was texted to me. Food - on a scale of 1 to 10 it was an 11! * Lemonade was had good lemon taste and just the right acid/sugar balance. I learned that a batch is made each day, and occasionally two. The best I've had anywhere in Sonoma County or Marin County! * I order the first three items on the oyster list (this time two of each) and came up with a new favorite. Then I added four more to the favorite. At 81 I don't do well on short term memory! I love that what was done so right was the lemon and the mignonette (sp?) sauce that was exactly balanced. The last restaurant in Ptown and two absolutely terrible with a red and a white. * Next I ordered a Shrimp Cocktail. They screamed fresh, perfectly boiled that let the shrimp flavor out, and again the red sauce was perfectly balanced between flavor and heat. Had to made in house. And they just nicely crisply cool, not in a cold place that overwhelms the flavor. I don't think I've every had one this good! * Next was a pair of fried oysters. I was prepared for some oily, bready things that would ruin all of the above. BUT NO, the perfect balance was incredible!! * Last was the clam chowder. I'm soooo fussy about this after growing up in the NorthEast (Connecticut) and 4 years of college in Maine blew this one away. It lacked the perfection and freshness of my East Coast standard. But I finished with the last of lemonade and all was well. My standard has never been "perfect." I don't meet that standard, so the chef shouldn't have to either. Hey, maybe he's never been in Maine!
