So I'm sitting here as I write. I came in around 4:30, because I was desperate to find somewhere I could order food and drink AND work on my laptop (and therefore, plug in my laptop). There were 3 other tables in the restaurant when I arrived, but I still asked the girl who greeted me if it would be okay to plug in and work for a bit, or if they'd rather I didn't, if I'd kill the vibe. I don't like to be the annoying person who is working in a spot that's meant to have some sweet ambiance. She cheerfully said I was more than welcome! Score! I've sat here for a bit and a few more bodies are in the door now... A handful of people have gone out back to their super cute and sunshiney and renovated patio. I checked it out to see if I could work out there (there is a plug!) but it was too hot for me. Food was good. I stuck with an old favourite from pre-renovation-- the chicken and avocado wrap. Their fries are SO good, kind of peppery and just what I wanted to eat as a cheat food today. The girl let me do half fries, half salad-- so it wasn't a full cheat either. Hahaha. The only thing lacking on my plate was the salad. The spinach was a bit old and I should have asked for the dressing on the side so it wouldn't be soggy. I'm picky that way. I came here on my first visit to BC few years back... I remember the place being so-so. However, I felt a wave of fun energy in this place on my return. I have yet to discover all the hot spots of the city but the staff were great and made this meal super memorable.. I enjoyed my savoury bacon linguini and my party went nuts for their briskets. Staff said there is a new chef as menu changed since I had been there. Seems like major improvement and the environment even seemed friendlier, inviting and a bit spruced up. This place is mouth-wateringly delicious! I went here on a weekday afternoon for brunch- and it was absolutely amazing... the portions are huge (definitely not finishable!) but you will definitely try your best to finish it!! I had a pesto tofu scramble and orange juice - yum! The service is a little slow, and they don't really customize (i.e. i wanted egg whites only, but it wasn't possible), but it was still finger lickin' good! =) I would definitely recommend this place for brunch! read more

Definitely not going back to this cafe. Service is extremely slow. We came after the lunch rush and there were only 3 other tables seated. Waited over an hour for a chicken wrap and a Caesar salad. When asked how much longer after an hour, the response we got was "they're putting the chicken on the grill now and it should take 4-5 minutes". For a burger joint, I can't imagine the orders for the other tables taking an hour. This place needs to learn to manage their time better. My favourite brunch place in Vancouver! Either location is great but the South Granville one is my fave. I can go there with friends, family or the boyfriend. Seriously, amazing brunch. Breakfast potatoes? AMAZING. The Scramblers is what my boyfriend always gets, on a bagel, and it is a huge meal but so yummy. I love the eggs benny, huevos rancheros, and even just the plain normal breakfast. Caesars are a must, the mimosas are so good, and they serve beer in the morning as well - which usually appeals to the guys in the group. When our parents were visting from Toronto we went here three times on their request! For lunch they have really yummy club sandwiches and burgers! One of the things that make me feel at home in a city is having a 'local pub' that I can call home (in a totally positive-coping-mechanisms sort of way, not an alcoholic sort of way). For me, in this South Granville neighborhood in which I live, Barney's is it. And I'm pretty happy to call it 'home'. I come here for breakfast quite often - even though that sometimes means waiting out the door - and in the evening to meet up with friends in a welcoming atmosphere. Most of the time that I go here I just really enjoy the music, the atmosphere, the art on the walls, and the almost invariably friendly service. This is what keeps me coming back. It's what makes a home a home. ;) Just a note that the breakfast food is great (I love the breakfast burrito), as is the dinner menu (yummy avocado and brie stuffed chicken with mashed potatoes). And a nice wine list too. My only thing with Barneys (which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5) is that it doesn't stay open until 2:30 like I wish that it would. But Barney, I'm only saying that because I like you so much. read more

I went once before the renovation for brunch and it was pretty good. Classic brunch options served in big portions. I went again today and the renovations were a big improvement. I was really hoping for a burger for lunch but they only serve their brunch menu until 4pm on Saturday and burgers were not on it. I ordered a chicken wrap with a side salad to go. I waiting close to 30 minutes, and they didn't have takeout cutlery (couldn't eat my salad). The wrap was good, lots of moist chicken, bacon, avocado, and tomatoes. When I went to eat the second half of my wrap I found a hair in it. Needless to say I threw it out after that, but I was also unimpressed with the salad as the arugula was wilted and looked old. read more

Recently moved to the neighbourhood, and this is my new FAVE brunch place!!!! Yesterday my friends and I came for brunch, we had waffles and chicken, an omelette and absolutely fantastic rancheros! Our server was great and friendly, she suggested to move us so we had more space and be comfortable. That extra step was very appreciated as we ordered a lot of side food and drinks. Do you realize they have brunch until 4pm EVEN ON WEEKDAYS??? Hells yes, that means on a Friday I can go out for lunch with co-workers and get an eggs benny if I want! AND I DID. The place is nice, I like when restaurants have real art on the walls for sale. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was really chill. Despite being pretty small it wasn't super busy over lunch and we easily got a table. Our food arrived promptly, which is important when you're on lunch from work. One of my lunchmates got the chicken wrap which was HUGE and she said she really liked. My salmon eggs benny was delightful (just as it is at the place on Main street I often frequent) and everything was good. It seems as though most of my reviews are about drinking.... well friends, so begins my month of sobriety. This month my reviews will not be funny, but be boring and dry - literally. So here we go.... I had brunch here with the BF - he had the asparagus, pesto and cheese sandwich thing and I had some veggie omelet and subbed fries for the hash - never been a fan of hash personally. I was happy to get some Frank's red hot on that shit to spice it up a bit, cuz it was pretty average (like this review so far). I sat, I ate I conquered, I don't know what else to say... something really feels like it's missing.... oh right probably the drinks. Who's idea was this again? Survival of day one accomplished. What is up with this place? I was exhausted from shopping on South Granville and walked into this place just to feed my empty stomach. And, that was the worst decision of the day. I'll be straightforward. The BLTC (bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheddar) that I had... worse than the sandwich that I make at home (and I SUCK at cooking.) I wanted fresh and crisp lettuce but what I got was.... (sigh) what a shame. I paid $11 for this shit. If I could go back in time, I would rather to go starbucks and have their $4 breakfast sandwich. Sandwich board. I think they should definitely get one so I don't walk completely past it again. The 'Caffe' bit is a little misleading, it really is a pub. This place is pretty cozy with it's narrow design, several skylights, and a 'secret' patio in the back (which I didn't find out about until I paid my bill). Having never tried the famous Kobe Beef, I went with their Kobe burger with salad. The kobe had a distinct flavour compared to regular bovine. I also sampled their blackened Cajun-style Ahi Tuna burger, now that was amazing. Perfectly seared and seasoned, it was one of the best burgers I've had. read more

We had brunch here on a monday around 10:30am. The food was good and surprisingly large portions for the price. I had the chorizo omelette for 9.50CAD and my wife had .. i forget now. But I remember that she added on a side of fruit and it was a really good fruit side. They had sliced strawberry's, pineapple and all the good fruits that you don't normally get with a side. The hashbrowns are more what i would call quartered potatos and they were really good. The toast was not too toasted and it came with what seamed like fresh strawberry jam...excellent. The only weird thing was that they don't accept debit cards but they do accept credit cards. However i feel I might have been their on an 'off' day... we waited forever outside on the deck for the server, as did everyone else. Cafe Barney's is #1 on my Brunch list, which says a lot since I am a brunch enthusiast. They have consistently amazing food. I especially suggest the Salmon, Pesto, Cream cheese omlette (my personal fave). Some helpful notes: - The food is DELICIOUS, the service is shit. You practically have to tackle the servers for a refill on anything, or even to ask for another fork, napkin, cream for the coffee, etc. It's part of it. If you want better service, go to the Main street location of Cafe Barney's (Main and 13th), WAY better service and less wait due to a bigger location. read more

Came back for brunch and was definitely very impressed. Same laid back atmosphere as last time, with less loud music and more coffee. I had the smoked salmon, pesto and cheese omelette (I substituted mozzerella for cream cheese). It was huge, perfectly cooked and extremely tasty. It also came with a very generous portion of smoked salmon inside. I substituted toast for a side salad for $1.50 but I didn't mind paying a bit extra because the salad, when it came, looked more like a full-size salad and I asked the server if there had been a mistake. I was skeptical when my friends wanted to grab a bite to eat in this neighborhood, however, I was pleasantly surprised. The menu caters to vegetarians (veg. poutine, yay) and they have a nice tap list to quench your thirst. The staff is unpretentious and this place is just the right size to eat in a group or have an intimate affair. Ended up here because the sushi place nearby happened to be closed. Luckily they had room for our group of 8 on such short notice (it's not a large place, and it was already crowded). I got the chicken and cheddar quesadilla. It was delicious and crispy, so no complaints there. Our table got a pitcher of water, but we emptied it pretty quickly and it never got refilled, only taken away. Other than that, the service was fine. As bestie Matt C. can attest, the food at Caffe Barney is top-notch, and I'll be damned if I can find a $12 eggs benny with delicious smoked salmon and mushrooms anywhere else. Coffee is also bottomless and our server was around frequently to top up our cups, though I'm not a fan of the teensy half-and-half disposables that they keep at the table -- being a fan of cream in my coffee, the supply dissipated rather quickly. As bestie is a considerably tall person, he requested that we sit at one of the tall tables, and unfortunately I had trouble finding a comfortable seat what with having short legs. The hi-tops also don't have much surface area, so it quickly got cramped once our breakfast landed home. However, there's plenty of space at the bar and at the other booths, so there are better options if you'd like to spread out more. All in all, Caffe Barney is a fantastic, cheap place to come for a hangover-curing brunch, a nice cuppa, and lovely conversation with a dear friend. read more

I have been here numerous times for lunch, but was until my recent experience that I decided to write a review. The food is tasty but the service can range from great to really awful. On my last visit I'd called in for take-out but the when I arrived to pick it up they'd completely forgotten about my order. So they offered me a free beer till my food would arrive! I was fine with the offer but it took an hour or so for my food to get ready! Considering that I'd called in half an hour before their busy lunch time, it was too long of a wait. I went here for brunch and was immediately put off by this "cafe" actually being a full service bar. Maybe the night hours are better than the day but I just was not overwhelmed. My greatest joy in the culinary world is breakfast and I could eat it all day long so, naturally, I am constantly on the search for new breakfast joints to call my own. This one will not be making it on my "where to eat' list for Vancouver. I think what initially turned me off was the quality of my cappuccino was mediocre at best. Yes. I get it. It's a bar. But still, I value a good cappuccino and this was not a good cappuccino. A bit too bitter, too wet, and the milk tasted a wee bit old which is never a good sign. I ordered the traditional eggs Benny with ham and my friend got the salmon omlette. Neither of these was bad but neither really bowled us over and the meal was far from memorable. Notably, the hashbrowns could have been nice if they were warm and the ham was too thinly sliced for the ammount of hollandaise sauce that was smeared on top. On a more positive note... I thought the service was quite good and its always fun to eat somewhere that a lot of people have gathered. Good people watching but not a great meal. I've been here a few times with girlfriends for drinks and food later in the evening, and it's been decent. However I went with my husband today for lunch and was a little disappointed. The food took forever, the waitress wasn't very attentive, and I felt the value I got for my dollar was pretty poor. $15 for a "Crab Cake Salad" which involved 2 small crab cakes that probably came out of a package, a head of butter lettuce sliced and hardly even separated, a half an avocado, and about a 1/4 each of an apple and a tomato on top of the lettuce. It tasted fine but definitely too expensive. They didn't even seat us properly. She said "For two? Lots of room." (There wasn't.) Short version - decent for drinks in the evening, but I don't think I'll go there for lunch again. read more

Came here on a recommendation from a friend. Even so, I was pleasantly surprised. The prices are great - best Ive seen for this area. I went during happy hour and they have a nice collection of beers on tap, all looked local including the specials, which is kinda cool. I had a chicken avocado wrap. Holy, was it good. Cheese was just the right amount of melty, and they dont skimp on the good stuff (wasnt all lettuce). Servers were attentive but not pushy - a fine line, especially in a nice area like this. I've passed by this place so many times thinking it was just a bar/cafe type place. Just this weekend, I was searching on Yelp for brunch places after I picked up BF from an eye exam he was having. As soon as I saw there were eggs benedict I was sold. I have a severe weakness for poached eggs smothered in hollandaise sauce with tasty vegetable goodies. PATIO ALERT! It was a lovely sunny afternoon and we got to sit out on the patio. There were some big umbrellas for shade, and some full-sun spots too. We started out with an iced tea for BF and an iced coffee for me. I had the Commando Eggs Benny with brie, asparagus, and fresh tomatoes. There was a miniscule amount of brie, but a nice helping of asparagus and tomatoes, and definitely no stinginess on the hollandaise. BF had the BLTC (bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheddar). He said it was good, but he would have preferred the bacon made fresh (it was cold, like it'd been prepped in the morning) and maybe a bit saucier (more mayo?). Overall though he said it was good--a good size with lots of fillings like romaine lettuce not iceberg. Unfortunately both our taters (BF had french fries, I had hash browns) were overdone, like they'd been left in the deep fryer too long. The fries came without salt and the hash browns had no seasoning either. Our server was attentive, prompt, and friendly. It wasn't too busy, but we were there on a weekday around noon. The patio was half-full and from the looks of it, she was the only server on duty (not counting the bartender at the front or the kitchen staff). I found barney to be one of those inexpensive and dependable breakfast places where the food will always be good and the coffee fresh. The feel in there was very relaxed and comfortable. I ordered the traditional benny and a coffee. Most of their meals are between 10-12 dollars; inexpensive. I usually have my coffees black and theres was strong and tasty. There are many places where after you take a sip, theres this gross after taste or a long lingering bitterness. Their coffee was good. The traditional benny as tasy aswell. There was a good portion of ham and the eggs were cooked perfectly; Runnnnnnyyyyyyyy. yum. Please yelp, I would like the 3.5 option!! Hangover Breakfast. YES The original Caffe Barney never fails to impress. I have been coming here for about a decade to have my breakfasts with friends or even alone. Breakfasts are served late into the day so don't fret if you wake up late. Everything on the menu is reliable and tasty but MOST of all I ADORE getting the Chorizo sausage omlette. Everything I want in a filling omlette- i wish i could have this as my 3 square meals a day. If you are here on the weekends get ready to LINE up!. Goodt hing Bean Around the World is right besde this palce- get yourself a coffee and then patiently wait .. It only gets more delicious. the cozy interior wilk make you want to stay and drink a hangover beer = ) (which you can do) Dinners here are dimly lit and nice. But the gem of this place is definitely brunch-time and PS: the JAM in this place is the only breakfast jam that is worth eating all that bread for- no longer will you devour the breakfast and leave the toast behind Warniing- do NOT expect the Main street location to be as cool. read more

Most of the menu options at Barney's are pretty generic (burgers, quesadillas, pasta, etc.) and there isn't a lot of selection for vegetarians. I ended up going with a spinach/artichoke/feta quesadilla. While it was pretty good, it would have been nice if it came with sides like some rice or refried beans. I really did enjoy the homemade salsa though. Overall my visit to Caffe Barney was pretty average. There wasn't too much to differentiate it from a typical chain restaurant like Earls or Moxies. Pro-tip: they have a patio out back that they don't really advertise. If it's a nice night, make sure to ask if they have space. It is pretty small but you might get lucky. read more

Caffe Barney is a fun and hip joint on groovy Granville Street. The food is delicious (especially the chicken wings), and the service is friendly and fast. This particular Caffe Barney has an old rustic feel to it, with wooden furniture and flooring. There's a bar you can sit at, high tables and chairs, or normal lower tables and chairs. This is a great place to come with a few friends to enjoy a bevvie and a catch up. read more

I went for brunch with a couple friends a couple Saturdays ago. I have no complaints about the service, it was typical - neither excellent nor terrible, just average. This review isn't based on service, it's the food. I had the basic 2 eggs, bacon, potato & toast option. I think it was $11. If you're going to charge $11 for something it should be better than what I can pay $2.95 for at Bon's. Eggs were ordered scrambled and came undercooked and slimy, bacon was limp and mediocre in flavour, and the potatoes were just deep fried chunks that tasted like they had been using the same oil for days. Absolutely underwhelmed. I will not return. read more

I like Caffe Barney for the food, the price point, the convenience factor and the COFFEE! The service is indeed terrible. The aloof staff are often huddling behind the bar gossiping about the bender they were on the night before, and they really do look the part, but the food makes up for it. I love a good benny and this place delivers. The music is way too loud, but it seems that they want this place to be a 'hangover hangout' so I suppose it fits the bill which is always very reasonable due to the great prices! read more

We stopped in to Caffe Barney this past weekend for lunch and a pint. The tables were packed with young hipsters and the walls were filled with art - I was immediately hopeful it was going to be a new fun spot for us to frequent! The service was quite prompt and friendly, but unfortunately where the experience lacked was on the meal itself. Both of our dishes were sub par and kind of greasy. It's not to say it was inedible, it's just not likely we'll be raving to all our family and friends about how great it was. I would probably recommend this place for beers and appys, but if you want an awesome brunch or lunch you might want to look somewhere else. read more
