Caffe Aroma used to be my GO-TO spot between classes when I attended Canisius College. I would sit on the cushioned bench in the back, put in my earphones and write my papers. Recently, I read a bunch of negative reviews (and heard a bunch of negative things). I'm gonna start by saying, it is NOT on par with how it used to be. I know there was a change in management and it was very obvious. I came in here about a year ago and it validated some of those concerning statements I heard. But this time around, I'm going to go ahead and say that I believe they're doing everything they can to change things around back to the positive atmosphere it used to be. The man behind the bar had SUCH a positive attitude (not sure what his name is), and didn't let anything affect it. The few concerns I have, mostly revolve around maintenance and customers. I ordered an Irish Coffee and said yes to whipped cream, however the heavy cream had gone bad. I don't blame the one (and only) person working, it didn't seem like it'd freshly gone bad. It seemed like it'd been bad for a couple of days. The employee happily replaced it with a drink on the house (thank you!) I worked for about 3 hours and in that time, noticed multiple homeless/unhygienic customers come in. They all ordered something, and I understand a paying customer, is a customer. But is it intimidating to all the young college students coming in solo? I presume so. It would have been intimidating for me, had this been when I was at Canisius. A Summary: I absolutely love this place, blame my nostalgia. The employee working was absolutely superb (wish I got his name, gray haired man working alone, give him a raise, unless he's the owner! lol). The clientele and the maintenance (like let's update those benches in the back, I've seen so many unhygienic people sit there, and also the glassware/silverware/plates) is not up to par. Every couple of years, I seem to block out what my experiences have been like at Caffe Aroma, and I return. After all, this is the kind of café I normally frequent: independent, locally-owned, community-focused, tucked right next to a bookstore. I should love this place. But then, as always, I regret going. The food is mid, the music is a touch too loud, but most importantly, the customer service is uncomfortably indifferent. It's this last detail that sticks with me. There is the odd feeling that the people working there don't like that I came in and don't care if I come back. I fully recognize that the above description is hard to quantify, so I would honestly encourage others to go and see if they have a different outcome. I've been here two other times. The first time was a couple years ago. I met with a friend and had a latte and some breakfast food. The barista had drawn a cool design in the latte. It was a leaf. The second time was a chai tea and a cookie to go after running in the neighborhood. Today was my third time coming here. I wanted to support them during the COVID-19 pandemic. I stopped in here while out for a long walk. I ordered a black coffee and added my own sugar and milk. I love the vibe of this place and I'm so glad that they're still open. read more

It's an ideal spot to meet up with a friend over coffee or to grab a table to catch up on work. If you want to support a local business rather than a place like Tims or Starbucks (NO disrespect to them), this is a great coffee shop to visit and support! There's adequate seating inside and there's also outdoor seating when weather permits. I've seen this place mobbed (outside) on nice summer days - now I understand why! I give four stars for their happy hour, 2 for their brunch. I know that this is a very popular place for brunch but I have been a couple times and found the breakfast bland and overpriced. For happy hour, all their pizzas are $10 (average is $17 regular price) and $3 wells. Their pizzas are delicious. Great flavors and tons of options. And the drinks are good too. Cute corner cafe. I have to admit the only time I find myself here is when Ashkers is closed, but it's also a great choice. The chia latte here might be my favorite in the City. And the last time I was here they had an apple/nutmeg/mint frittata which sounded crazy, but I trust them and it was delicious. I appreciate any place that offers unique food items that taste great. The interior seating is cozy. They also have a spacious outside patio, half of it covered if you would like to stay out of the sun/rain. My only complaint are the chairs on the patio. The slatted metal chairs are horribly uncomfortable. Unless you like striped imprints in your butt and thighs, then these chairs are perfect for you! Seriously these chairs are meant to have cushions not sit on directly. But overall this is a minor thing. My theory is they did this on purpose so you don't post up here all day (unless you BYOC - bring your own cushion) It's next to talking leaves bookstore, which I always have to stop in too, because who doesn't love a good cafe/bookstore combo? read more

I love trying coffee shops around Buffalo, and this is one I'm particularly fond of. I absolutely love their coffee - I get a cappuccino almost every time I'm there. The flavor is perfect and you can get different sizes, which I appreciate for sure. They also have super yummy breakfast sandwiches, which hit the spot on cold winter mornings! Their pricing is reasonable and I love the open mic poetry nights they host! They're so much fun and it's a great place to chat with new people. The staff is super friendly too. Ah, so happy to have Caffe Aroma be around the corner for me! This cafe advertises itself as a 'European-style' cafe and it's definitely cozy enough to feel like one. Aroma serves beer, wine, cheese plates, soups, panini's, frittata's, croissants, wraps and salads. For breakfast, if you're sick of frittata's and croissants, I suggest going to Ashker's across the street for a more varied breakfast menu (but also heavily egg-based). As the oldest independently owned cafe in Buffalo, Aroma has cemented itself into local consciousness as a hangout spot for many locals. If you spend a few hours here, even in the whee hours of early morning you will soon find the cafe come along with activity, banter and locals greeting each other. It's a true gathering spot and not a bad place to people watch either. As far as the interior, it's pleasant, cozy and intimate. The place is pretty small and it can get pretty crowded at times, with people reading, browsing the Internet and chatting. There's also a big plasma TV, which they sometimes turn on for various sport events and that adds a whole other dynamic to the cafe. Since they serve beer and wine, this is also not a bad place to grab a drink after work for their selection of beers is pretty varied. It can also be a good place for a first casual 'coffee-date' (or in this case you can make it a beer date!). Good non-threatening environment to talk and find out a little more about the person. As far as the food - it's good! It's casual cafe fare and it stacks up pretty good against the other local options..not much more to say about it. read more

Great hot beverages in a cozy European coffee house atmosphere. Or cold beverages, as Caffe Aroma also has a liquor license, and serves beer pints and glasses of wine, too. But our day drinking game is weak, so we personally stick with the caffeinated options. My husband loves the London Fog tea, infused with vanilla and lavender. I'm always happy with the house blend black coffee, which comes with a free refill if you have it served in a glass mug. No pour-over coffee here though, something I wish they'd add to the options. I do also enjoy a flavored steamer, which is steamed milk (I prefer almond milk) with a flavor shot of your choice. They have at least twenty or so flavors to choose from. Caffe Aroma carries almond, oat, and soy milk, so lots of vegan friendly drinks for our vegan daughter, as well. The baristas are very friendly and accommodating to any drink modifications you prefer. Prices are reasonable for a boutique coffee house, I'd say on par with Starbucks, about $4 - $6 per hot beverage, or less for just regular coffee. One thing lacking is vegan food or baked good options. They used to have vegan cookies and brownies, but stopped carrying them a while ago. They do carry an assortment of regular cookies and muffins, as well as food like quiches, paninis, pasta salads, and other sandwiches. There are vegetarian options. But we don't come here to eat, but rather to sip and set up shop at a table for a while to read, or work on something on a laptop, using the strong free WiFi connection. The tables are tiny and tight, mostly two-tops, maybe ten tables total, and maybe another half-dozen bar seats. It doesn't take much for it to fill up, so if you are heading over to camp out for a while and it is busy, you may be out of luck getting a seat. Caffe Aroma is hooked to Talking Leaves Bookstore, so if you forget your reading material, if the bookstore is open you are in luck to grab a fresh read. The bookstore and the caffe do share similar hours, but the bookstore is currently closed on Sunday. When we're in the mood for good coffee beverages and a charming place to chill for a while on the Elmwood Strip, Caffe Aroma is a solid pick. read more

Caffe Aroma holds a very special place in my heart. I used to work next door and would frequent this wonderful shop all the time during my shifts. Then, on my days off, I would come up here and grab a coffee and sit on the patio to people watch. Hands down this is the best place in the Elmwood Village to grab a drink and people watch. Right across from Bidwell Park, you see it all. Yoga, protests, farmers markets, concerts, people reading, people playing with their dogs, you name it and you'll see it. The service in here is always fast and friendly. They have tons of coffee/espresso options, teas, etc and they even have beer. I used to come here to sports as well, with a craft beer in hand it was the perfect atmosphere. They also have food for purchases, sandwiches, paninis, bagels, muffins etc and I've tried a fair few items and they are all good. I have since moved away from Elmwood but when I'm in the area I still try and stop in. Came in on Saturday before visiting the farmers market. It was jam packed inside and out. I got the iced hazelnut mocha, that was on special that day. It was so so delicious. My most favorite part about aroma is that it is connected to talking leaves. Coffee and a book is pretty much everything I need in life. Come check them out! read more

After spending the evening at the Erie County Fair, my parents and aunt wanted to take me out for a drink on Elmwood. As school isn't yet back in session in New York, the street was fairly dead, but we found what appeared to be a cozy bar/coffee shop called Caffe Aroma. The inside was painted warm hues of yellow and tan and the bar itself appeared to be a beautiful piece of history. Paintings from local artists hung on the walls, and one depicting cats seated around people bathing in a bathtub was my table's favorite. Originally, I ordered a lemon drop martini, but the bar was out of some of the ingredients, so I changed my order to an off-menu item, an Irish hot cocoa (hot chocolate with a shot of Bailey's and whipped cream). Having come from Kansas, the summer evening highs of 60 degrees or so felt like autumn to me, and the warm drink was appreciated. The brownie that I ordered was perfectly fudge-y and chocolate-y. The staff was fun and talkative. It's obvious that there aren't many visitors from Kansas as the cashier had trouble finding the birthdate on my ID, which we laughed about. The bartender was dressed in a sharp black shirt with an accompanying bow tie, making the experience feel a little more special. The next time I visit Buffalo, I'd love to stop by again, but maybe next time in the morning for a hot tea over a good book. read more

It's no wonder many of the long time regulars are gone and the new folks don't know what it used to be like. It was a center of the community, properly and effectively staffed, the quality of the products was excellent, and the vibe was everything a classic café could be; the right balance of young and old, neighborhood and visitor, and just enough "grit" to keep the Starbucks folks away.
