Pho 75 - Still My Favorite Bowl of Pho in Philly!…read more I've tried quite a few Vietnamese restaurants around Philadelphia, but I always find myself coming back to Pho 75. There's just something about their pho that keeps me hooked! Pho reminds me of Mom's homemade Italian gravy or chicken soup. The ingredients may be similar, but everyone's technique, spices, and little touches make their recipe special. And of course, everyone's taste buds are different! One thing to know before you go: Pho is pretty much ALL they serve! Don't expect fried rice, spring rolls, or a big menu of Vietnamese dishes. They specialize in pho, with plenty of beef combinations and chicken pho, too. I love a place that focuses on one thing and does it really well! The broth is rich, fragrant, and piping hot, with wonderful spices like star anise, cinnamon, and cloves. My favorites are the rare beef and brisket, and those Vietnamese meatballs are delicious! The thinly sliced beef is tender, and the hot broth cooks the rare beef right in your bowl. Yum! Add fresh bean sprouts, Thai basil, jalapeños, a squeeze of lime, and maybe a little Sriracha or hoisin sauce. I always taste the broth first because it's already so flavorful! And one thing I really appreciate? They don't chop up the rice noodles! I love those long noodles! Grab some with your chopsticks, add a little meat and veggies to your spoon, and dip everything into that wonderful broth. Getting all those flavors together in one bite is the best part! A few tips before you go: Bring cash because they don't take credit cards, and the ATM fees can be steep. The parking lot can get a little crazy, but don't let that scare you away! Service is superfast. Just indicate how many people are in your party when you walk in. With so many combinations, you might want to check out the menu beforehand. Your steaming bowl of pho usually arrives within minutes! It's a no-frills place. No fancy atmosphere or bar, just hot tea, coconut juice, sodas, and seriously good pho. Pay at the counter when you're done. For me, it's one of those places where I know exactly what I'm craving and exactly where to go to get it. Still my favorite bowl of pho in the Philly area, and I'll keep coming back!

Given that the vegetarian tofu was more expensive than any of the phos with meat, I expected vegetables to be somewhat robust...this was not the case. In addition to a fairly bland soup that lacked depth, the only vegetables the soup came with were bok choy and broccoli. The added tofu was fried and quite good but the portion was quite small...certainly not enough to justify an additional $3.00 cost. My soup also came in a different bowl and appeared to be a smaller potion than my friend's. She ordered the beef tofu and also complained of a bland broth; she said the brisket was well cooked. Sauces - The sauces at the table (Hoisin and Siracha) seemed to be water down, which is bad enough. But they also seemed a bit rancid and had a strange after taste. Lovely owners. Nice ambiance.
