This was my first visit to Cafe South in Charlotte. The restaurant looks like it was an old Bob Evan's. I liked the country vibes. I ordered the Hobo breakfast and a biscuit. The gravy and overall flavors were delicious! The hash browns were a little overcooked and there was a bit of egg shell in my eggs. Good southern breakfast! My husband and I got the Hobo Breakfast. The gravy was amazing and the biscuit was so fluffy! However, the hash browns were sub par. They were kind of chewy, and I would not get them again. The dish also appeared to have a slice of Kraft American Cheese on it, which wasn't what I would have chosen. Accidentally ordered a Country 'Style' Steak instead of a Country 'Fried' Steak, but was pleasantly surprised by the bed of fresh steamed rice that my steak sat on top when I opened the container. The cube steak was perfectly cooked and the gravy complimented everything. The mash potatoes and mac n cheese filled me up to the brim and the cornbread finished me off. when I first moved down here, I was excited and I came to this place because it was highly recommended. The first time I came, the service was great and the food was great. The second time I came, the eggs were absolutely horrible. The third time I came I called ahead first and asked what time breakfast ended and I was told to be there by 11:30. I get there at 11:28 waited in line and made it up to the front by 1129 and they not serving breakfast anymore. Back to Cafe South after eight years and it's still a good experience. This building used to be a Bob Evans and they've changed none of the structure. I think the dentist poster by the hostess stand might be exactly the same! We arrived at 11:30 on a sunny Saturday morning and the hostess took my name and promised a 10 minute wait. My name was called about 10 minutes later and we were brought to a comfortable though low booth. It's amazing how one person can ruin an experience. Came on day 1 and rolled in. Service was fine. Food was average but did its purpose. Day 2 came in with another group but this time the receptionist refused to seat us until everyone in a large party was present. We are in a group at the surrounding hotel so there is always going to be one straggler. But can't sit. Can't get coffee until everyone is present. The ambiance is so nice!! I loved sitting in the colorful dining room. The food was delish (perfection!), we got the French toast, eggs, bacon, hash browns, grits, and biscuit, and it was all amazing. Didn't even hurt my stomach which breakfast food often does!! Super impressed by this place. It gave off a small town feel with the way the restaurant layout was as well as the menu. The food was delicious and plentiful. Our portions were enormous. Nobody in our party was able to eat their entire meal. The waitress was impressive as well. She came and took our order quickly, checked up on us frequently without feeling too often, and memorized our order perfectly. Is this fine dining? I'll start by saying the food was very good. Our waitress was sweet and attentive....that's the good part. My husband and I sat there 45 minutes before we received our food. Mine was lukewarm. The people across from us, that came in after us, got their food and offered us toast because we were sitting there with no food and no one came and apologized for our wait. When the food came the couple across from us clapped. I asked for the manager and he gave a half-hearted apology and excuses. I asked him to comp my lukewarm breakfast because I wasn't going to send it back to the kitchen. He said no at first and then changed his mind probably because of the look he was getting from me. Read some qood reviews about this place so decided to give them a try for our normal Sunday Brunch. Church let out in Davidson around 10:30am and what should have only been a 30 minutes drive down took a bit over and hour because of a traffic accident at the junction with 1-277 which had all lanes blocked except for one. Six lanes going to one slows things down considerably. We got to the the restaurant about 11:45 and were promptly seated. First impression was "this is a Bob Evans". Asked the hostess and she confirmed that this restaurant had been previously a Bob Evans When the new owners bought it, they did not do much to change the feel. Looked over the menu and we both ordered the Meatloaf plate. In my case I got a side house salad and fried okra and for the Meatloaf, tomato sauce on top. My wife ordered her Meatloaf with Brown Gravy and for sides, fried Okra and Mashed Potatoes. They messed up here order and brougnt Mac and Cheese but promptly corrected it. My wife liked her Meatloaf but I found mine to a bit bland. Sides were very good however. Portions are large and service is very good. It's at Exit 3 on I-77 just to the east of the intersection. Good place for the traveler because it's north of the Carowinds Congestion but before you get to the Charlotte traffic snarl. read more
