My first introduction to Pollo Campero wasn't in Charlotte. It was back in 2001 when I worked at Houston's international terminal. Flights from Guatemala would arrive, and passengers would walk off the plane carrying bags of Pollo Campero. The aroma was unforgettable. Ever since then, I've been curious about what made this chicken so special. Fast forward to Charlotte, and now I finally understand the hype. I stopped in for a quick lunch and ordered the four-piece roasted chicken meal with sweet plantains, coleslaw, and a roll. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The chicken was juicy and packed with spices that set it apart from your typical fast-food chicken chain. It's hard to explain until you try it, but the seasoning has a distinctive flavor that makes Pollo Campero uniquely its own. The sweet plantains were excellent. Soft, caramelized, and sweet with those slightly crispy edges that make plantains so addictive. The coleslaw was cold, creamy, and crunchy, which paired perfectly with the chicken. The service was friendly, the value was excellent, and my order was accurate. I always take a moment to check my order before leaving the drive-thru, and everything was exactly right. Charlotte is a fried chicken city. Aside from being the headquarters for Bojangles, we've got outlets for all the big chains - KFC, Church's, Popeye's and such. Several excellent local restaurants, too. So I had high hopes today for Pollo Campero. PC was clean when I arrived at 12:30. Quite busy with about a third of the tables in use and the remaining were clear of dirty dishes. Surprising because they don't have a trash can that I could see - the staff bus and clean tables, clearing them swiftly. I ordered a three piece at the counter and it didn't take long until a running found my tent card and I was able to start. The chicken was thoroughly cooked, still moist. Not much for flavor in the skin today, it needed some hot sauce to bring out the taste. The cole slaw was creamy and crisp. Still good but also a little bland. The small dinner roll wrapped in plastic was fresh and fluffy. Overall, it's a nice little fast food spot. They also have a very good rewards program if you use their app. Me and my wife went by tonight for a to-go order, and they were short a couple fryers tonight. My wife's chicken sandwich was going to take 15 minutes to cook, and so they offered us whatever we wanted to snack on while we waited. (We picked their beans, and an empanada with sauce.) I noticed this place had great reviews and I wanted to try something new. I went here on a week day and it wasn't too busy around noon. I came during the pandemic. Below are some notes for you to determine if this is the best place for you to visit. This place reminds me of los Hermanos pollos from the series in breaking bad When I entered I wasn't greeted, but they knew I was there as they looked at me. The cost of the food is reasonable. The location is good as you can get gas and stroll to a shopping center across the street. It seems like a high traffic area so be careful if you choose to walk. They have plenty of parking. Despite the place not being busy and only one other customer being in line while I was there, the place was not clean on the inside. They had tables in front of the register to ensure social distancing. The staff had on face masks but the masks did not cover their noses so this isn't effective or appropriate in a food establishment during a pandemic. The governor and CDC have guidelines and policies in place for protection if you can't follow them I wonder what else you choose not to follow. All the staff had on gloves, but not sure of the purpose of the gloves when they handled money and then food without changing them. They touched hair and their face and then even took back returns and never seemed to change the gloves. A customer came back in and returned some food items that weren't made properly. A young man working on the side took the items and gave them to the cashier. The lady at the register brought the food back to the cook and left it in the hot zone. I do not know where the food ended up. It should of immediately been thrown away and not brought back to the cooking area especially during COVID-19. I asked the the young man to change his gloves before picking up my bag to give me. If I didn't enter I would of never known that they touched several items and didn't change their gloves, but would be under the impression of safe practices. I was able to watch the person selecting my food, but felt I needed to after seeing questionable practices. The crispy/fried chicken and fries were okay. Pollo Campero has some of the best fried chicken anywhere. The crust is sort of like Tempura batter except a little heavier. When they cook the fried chicken they always ensure that the oil is hot enough so that it's not a greasy mess yet flavorful. I really enjoyed their sides as well so that's a big bonus over some canned baked beans or whatever they offer at other places. Not your usual fast food place! Causal on the inside so you can sit down and have lunch/dinner. But if you're in a rush you can go through the drive through! The chicken was so good! Had the baked chicken (with tortillas) and fried chicken. The baked chicken had a lime flavor to it, it was really tasty and delicious! The fried chicken was soo crispy. They offered a four piece mixed (2fried/2roasted), and 2 sides(I got the plantains and the rice) for about $16. My frugal side said "Oh Yeah" so I put in the order. Twenty minutes later it arrived to the office and l ripped open the bag and started in. I started with the plantains which had a really good taste and were soft how I like them. The rice was so good too with an incredible seasoning on it. Yes, I've always eaten the side before I start in on the protein. My wife always thought that it was weird. I took the roasted chicken and started biting into the breast. Good taste but as most checkin breast are, it was a little dry. Next up was the friend chicken...OMG. The fried chicken had an absolutely incredible crunch and oozed with flavor. It literally had me talking aloud in my office as I munched down on the second bite. I was absolutely pissed though....that I didn't get the four piece fried instead of the mixed. Tender, juicy, full of flavor, just how I like it. They no longer have grilled chicken and that is communicated as if you either have to take it or leave. I would recommend to train your staff in customer service. Whenever I travel to a city that I have never set foot in, I check out local Groupon deals. You can save a bit when you do. It also makes you discover great food and figure out where things are. I bought two Groupons before I headed to Charlotte. One of them was for Pollo Campero. I have been on a fried chicken kick for a bit. My eyes lit up when I found out that this place serves fried chicken. More importantly, this place also has empanadas, which is a weakness of mine. The funny thing about both restaurants with Groupon promotions is that I had a difficult time opening the main door at both places. Perhaps not working out for nearly a week made me weak and seek nourishment. A female staff member helped open the door for me. I had reviewed the online menu before coming here. I looked at the menu again to make sure that I had everything. I ordered the following items: - Four pieces of chicken - half fried and half grilled with a lemon herb mix - Campero beans - Campero rice - Coleslaw - Empanada trio - Peruvia verde, chicken chipotle, and Latin buffalo - Flan The chicken meal comes with a tortilla. It was a lot of food for $20. I went over by a dollar. There is a waiting area in the restaurant for those who are ordering takeout. You can also dine in. Since it was my last day in Charlotte, I wanted to have dinner in my room and start packing for my morning flight out the next day. Pollo Campero is like the Spanish version of Popeyes, but with more sides and dessert options. The verdict? Both the fried and lemon herb chicken pieces were delicious. The meat was tender, flavourful, crispy, and juicy. So good! I could simply eat the chicken and call it good. I loved the Campero beans and rice. They complemented the chicken beautifully. I was not a fan of the coleslaw, though. It was supposed to be creamy, but it was a mix of that and water. I simply didn't like how it tasted. I didn't enjoy the flan, either. I was disappointed. It was too sweet for my liking. There was so much food that I ended up taking the empanadas on the plane and eating them there for lunch. All three flavours were amazing. The service yesterday 4/20/2025, was horrible. This wasn't my first time ordering food. My sister and I waited for 40mins to get food and was told it would be 20 minutes at first for dark meat oh and we was told there wasn't any wings but another staff member said there was but it'll be 10 minutes and we're like okay, meanwhile the staff smirked and smile at each-other. 20 minutes went by and was told another 5 minute, but all the while they have taken out four pans of chicken that consisted of white and dark chicken and were fixing bags and plates for customers that came in after us. Mind you we have spent $50. Finally, the manager came to the front and I'm like we have waiting for an hour then he asked for my receipt and said it's only been 40 minutes and 5 more minutes on dark like that makes it any better. I already realized that they have catered to all the Hispanics first while we're waiting. Finally I asked for a refund because we felt very rationally profiled. I will never spend another dime at this place and if you're any race other than Hispanic I wouldn't either. all of that smirking they were doing with each other and knew darn well what they was doing cause the guy taking the pans of chicken out of the oven kept watching us watch him. After passing this place driving down South Blvd on the way to Penguin's Sno Cones, we finally made a point to stop in and ordered a full family meal, which was WAY too much for the three of us, at least as far as the sides were concerned. Good came out in family style platters and bowls, but we ended up having to get some Togo containers at the end of the meal. Enjoyed both the fried and grilled chicken and appreciated the option of rolls or tortillas. Corn salad was colorful and textured and I can't pass up fried yuca. Friendly service and clean bathrooms. I'm combining the 2nd & 3rd visit on this review. 2nd visit - I walked in and dined in. I think it was Saturday midday and I paid an upcharge for white meat and still received dark meat mixed in. Alrighty. No worries. I tried the juices and don't like any. HOWEVER, there's manzana on tap at the soda machine. It's caffeine free. Along with Root beer but they have Pepsi products. My receipt with the green lines going through is posted. I ordered two 4 pieces with the 2 sides. The coleslaw is not to my liking. They serve it cold with a lime base and some bell pepper pieces throughout but it's not sweet, just bland. The rice was still divine even with the corn mixed about. The fries are exactly like any Pico Pollo I've ever enjoyed throughout the Dominican republic. Thin and slender. Done well on Saturday - overcooked and cold today (Wed July 5th @ 12:45, EST). The manager took care of the inadvertent dark meat they gave me and I had help boxing things when it was time to go and we had leftovers. Someone as the restaurant will have to teach you how to close up the box. Yeah, honey - it's that serious. But the boxes are the BOMB as they get everything safely home. If you dine in - folks will cater to you and everyone is walking around to clean up and be helpful. There were a few feathers on the grilled and the fried had the tallon at the end of the wings. All this aside things were consistent in taste as the first visit for the grilled AND the fried chicken isn't for me. It's bland to me and comes off like a batter you'd find on some onion rings. Looked in the bag and noticed they're all overcooked so I wanted to return just the fries and noticed the chicken was dark and grilled. I think I have someone else's order. Anywhoo, everyone was sweet and funny about it. So I chatted with folks. They helped me out with a picture. We ordered the 12 piece family dinner with corn tortilla fries, beans, and rice w/corn. The mango and horchata drinks had a balance sweetness and didn't taste store bought. THE CHICKEN: 11/10 stars! The skin was reminiscent and better than PIONEER CHICKEN (for those who don't know, this was a franchise in southern California in the 90's). It was hot and delicious! I dipped it with the Thai chili sauce. Bangin'! ATMOSPHERE: ample parking, family friendly, employees working fast. I used to come by regularly but the service has gone downhill unfortunately. The lady always sounds rushed and annoyed when you order. Every time i have come back, there is always something that they've ran out of. I tried to order the empanada trio and was told they were out of every flavor except one. They stopped serving the cilantro sauce and honestly the one they replaced it with has absolutely no taste it is very disappointing. The rolls are never in the bag or the sour cream for the plantains each time i have come back since my first review. its so disappointing since the chicken is still very good but just not worth the hassle anymore so make sure you check everything if you do decide to come here. 10 years ago I visited El Salvador for a couple weeks. Our last day there we crossed the border into Guatemala and stopped for "very special chicken". On the plane back home, half the travelers had HUGE boxes of Pollo Campero aboard, destined for the states. Now I know why. Both the fried and grilled chicken are simply amazing. If there is better, I haven't found it. The sides are all delicious too. Opt for the Mexican street corn as your side. And go half grilled/half fried so you can try both styles. Came here for dinner one night with the hubs. We had an idea what we wanted but still wanted to look at the menu. We decided on what we wanted and waited in line. We were next in line and there were 4 women in a group in front of us. There was another girl behind the counter that was clearly doing the register as well but she was doing something else. A lady came in behind us while we were waiting and waited a bit. She finally went passed us and asked the girl at the register about placing an order and asked if we were in line. The girl at the register looked at us and said NO! And took her order. Are you serious? Finally, we ordered after her which was extremely rude and when we were asking her questions she was very short and didn't really want to answer. We told her we wanted the empanada trio which comes which all three to try. She kept asking us which ones we wanted and we were telling her we wanted the trio-one of each. She didn't seem like she knew what was on the menu. I was asking her about the sauces (the green one and the pink one) and what flavors they were and she said "Oh there is a green one and a pink one and you get those when you get your meal." So I asked what flavors they were and she said one was cilantro and she didn't know what the other flavor was. Strange since I saw so many people get the pink sauce. We sat down and waited on our food and the food was served to us. The that dropped off the food was nice but I noticed we only got the pink sauce. We went up and asked for the green sauce as well to try. Overall, the food was good. I liked the fried chicken better than the grilled chicken. Everything I've heard made me want to check this place out. I mean come on...Mexican with a drive through. Brilliant! We had a Groupon so we had to dine in. That created a high class problem however. The food was so inexpensive that I we had to struggle to use the entire $20. My wife wanted all wings but they unfortunately have the servings pre-made and don't allow substitutions. No big deal. They do however allow you to mix and match between their Citrus grilled chicken and fried chicken. We wanted rice but unfortunately there were out but the upside was that the up-charge for the signature size was only $0.30. We paid less than $10 for our $20 Groupon and only ended up paying $2 afterwards. That's great because I had some food leftover to take home. I had a three piece breast and wing combo but it only comes with one side. Additional sides are very inexpensive however. I got the Yuca fries and sweet plantains. It did take forever to come but In fairness they did say that the grilled chicken would be another 10 minutes. I was however surprised when they stop by the table to say that the fried chicken would also be an additional five minutes when we had already been waiting for about 20 minutes. It was well worth the wait though. Aside from soft drink beverages they have what they call fresh drinks and the options are guava, Jamaica (fruit punch) and Horchata which is a traditional cinnamon and not Mexican drink. I really enjoy coming to eat at Pollo Campero. The restaurant has a warm and inviting atmosphere and the food is way more than your average fast food chicken joint. To begin you can choose between fried chicken and grilled chicken and although the fried chicken has a great crisp and bite - the grilled chicken is phenomenal. The grilled chicken has grill marks and is flavored or spiced with several mouth watering tastes. The menu comes in the traditional breast and wing or 3-5 piece combo with sides. The sides are OK. They are not my favorite part of the menu. But I imagine that is because I do not enjoy cold sides and I would prefer corn on the cob instead of corn kernels. But the sides are really flavorful and my wife enjoys all the sides. Fries. - I think they have Yuka fries or they do not have fries all together. I really can not remember because I did not order fries which sucks as a fry lover :( That's pretty much the only down side to this whole place... they need seasoned crispy fries- I am sure to update this review because Pollo Campero is really affordable and provides a solid stable meal. read more
