My date and I ordered a couple of desserts. She ordered the flan and I got a slice of the tres leches cake. She really enjoyed hers, taking at least half of it home in her to-go box. I have been dying to eat at Lempira. I had stopped in there one night to pick up take out for a friend and when I saw the severs going by with their plates I almost passed out. I haven't stopped thinking about eating there since. This was a couple weeks ago. I finally got some time to go. I got there late afternoon, around 4:00, not the busiest time in the restaurant business so I got seated right away. I was so excited to be here I couldn't wait to see the menu. And it was amazing. lempira serves Mexican, Salvadoran and Honduran dishes. I love ethnic, cultural food and any time I get a chance to eat authentic cultural cuisine I am in heaven. My waitress came to attend and I rather exuberantly attempted to convey my unbridled excitement at what I expected to be an experience I would not soon forget. She, however looked at me a bit quizzically and said uno momento. While she was gone, I gleefully pressed my nose into the enormous menu that was broken down into the three cultural cuisines they serve. She was gone a good bit. When she came back she was a little stressed out as she tried to explain to me that there was no one there that spoke English. Now I got even more excited. My head was screaming Jackpot!!! This is what authenticity is all about!!!! Fortunately the menu was in both English and Spanish. Now the drink menu.....not so much. So I picked a drink called Jarrito using the point to the pretty picture method. She completely understood. Jarrito as google reported to me is a Mexican Soda. This drink had Tequila in it, so I am assuming it was a Mexican Soda with Tequila. It was good. For my dinner I had the Parillada Mexicana. Which I just found out means Mexican Barbecue. It was amazing. It was a tender and delicious grilled steak (flat iron), Devil Shrimp, Chicken Quesadilla, and a salad. All extremely generous portions. I cant eat any south of the border food without including Tostones, so of course I ordered a side of them. It was a very large portion as well, but I can assure there was no lamenting over the overabundance of food. My only concern was not eating the leftovers in the car on the way home. I really wanted to relive this experience tomorrow. Everyone should eat here! It is some of the best food I have had, made in a humble atmosphere by people that do what they know and that is to prepare and serve the food they know..... and I cant think of a better thing!!! read more

It was a terrible idea bringing me here. Really, really bad idea. DELICIOSO! This place serves Mexican, Hondurean and Salvadorean food. The menu is EXTENSIVE, there is sure to be something here for everyone. The portions are BIG. I couldn't finish all my food. Casual environment, friendly servers. And best of all, the price is right. For a very decent price, you get a BIG MEAL and very delicious as well. In all actuality, this is arguably one of the best authentic South American cuisine in Charlotte. Yup, it's that serious. While the menu is in English and Spanish, I did a lot of translating between the waitress and my gringo boyfriend. ;) Food here is fairly authentic and so, so cheap. It's hard to believe the amount of food you get for the price. Papusas & tamales for $2, huaraches for $4, tacos for $6... Incredible! Quality is pretty inconsistent -- some dishes are great and others below average. The same dish might even be great on one visit and not good the next. Overall, worth a visit though, especially if you catch them on a good day! So, grab yourself a Spanish speaking friend and head to Lempira! I prefer weekend lunch when the place is full. read more

For the price you pay (which is good) you get a lot of food. The flavors in some dishes were good, but some lacked seasoning. When you have a restaurant that offers a variety of foods from different Latino countries it can get tricky. Mexican, Salvadoran, and Honduran all cook different and no dish is ever the same in other countries. For example I got a pupusa. The tomato sauce tasted off. Being Salvadoran I know the taste and no matter what restaurant you go to the flavor should be the same. Wasn't bad, just wasn't right. Both steak dishes needed flavor and the Churrasco steak wasn't the correct cut. I will say the atmosphere was great and so was the service. I look forward to returning and trying some other dishes. Picture this: it's almost 8 pm, you're about to turn in for the day, your friend calls and asks, "you want to get baleadas? Oh but we have to be there before 10". Mind you, you're in Greensboro but for some crazy idea, you agree and go after she describes baleadas as a taco burrito and that just leaves you confused. So now you're stuck in traffic hoping you can make it to this restaurant before 10 pm. Anyways, true story. And i will say, totally worth it. Baleadas are a Central American food and if I were to describe it it would be something like a really thick flour tortilla almost bordering the thickness and softness of naan with: beans, Honduran crema and cheese aka the "classic". My main question though was: Why do you have to a be at a restaurant before 10 though when they close at midnight? Baleadas are typically kind of tricky to make and the dough has to set and rise for a while;something the server explained no one wants to stay all night doing. Especially considering a batch of baleadas takes 30-50 minutes to make. For a first time experience trying a new really good item; I definitely recommend Lempira. Their menu alone is pretty huge: Mexican, Honduran, and Salvadoran food. The restaurant isn't exactly in the best of neighborhoods and it kind of reminded me of a cheesy strip club (it has neon bright purple lights framing the roof) but I would definitely be down to go again. Also, the horchata is slightly different from Mexican horchata because again, every region in central and Latin America has their own variation to such a classic. read more

I'm not sure if any of the servers speak English, but the menu is extensive with pictures and descriptions in Spanish and English so worst case scenario you could just point at what you want! First off, I ordered tamales de elote con crema and they were super good and it made me happy. My only disappointment was with the service. I walked into the restaurant during lunch time. The counter is right in front of the door and there were two hostess standing there. I walked in and was not greeted by anyone. I waited for a few minutes and the hostess took payment from two tables. I finally decided to take a menu from the counter myself and order to go. While I was looking at the menu 2-3 men walked in behind me and the hostess greeted them and asked them if they were dining in. The hostess then looked at me and just said "Are you going to order?". I placed my order and got my food quickly. I am just disappointed because I am 6 months pregnant and the waitresses walked by me several times to place their orders at the counter. read more

More Honduran than Mexican, forgive my categorization. Lempira's menu is huge, HUGE, like Greek Diner scale with many typical Mexican delicacies (minus Mole), Chile Rellenos, Fajitas, Burritos, Burritos Suizas, etc. We went for pupusas but ended up with more - Boltanos, like an open-faced brekkie burrito, cheese, eggs, beans, avocado. Some sort of empanada wrapped entirely in plantain and deep fried, filled with some sort of rice pudding. Deserty. But delicious. It can be a struggle to eat here if a) you don't speak a lot of spanish and b) if you're vegetarian, but both of those apply to me and I left very, very full. As we were poking at our various foods, enormous Platos Typicos were steadily streaming out of the kitchen, all large and enticing. Veggies will stick more to breakfast, empanadas, pupusas, and burritos. Be emphatic - some menu descriptions forget to mention ham, etc. Ask for the spicy salsa when you sit, as their gringo Red is mucho boring. They also do Botela Coke - enough for two to share. 6 dollar lunch specials daily. Breakfast combos served all day long. Lots of wood and curved doorways. Neato. read more

I still am shocked about this but our waitress didn't speak a lick of English nor did I hear anyone else speaking any English except for me and my buddy Paul. I'm still quite shocked about this. So was Paul! Down to the food. Well, that pesky Language barrier again. I was VERY clear in what I wanted. In fact, I POINTED TO THE MENU and said "aqui." I don't care if she only spoke Farsi pointing to WHAT I wanted should have done the trick. Well guess what? She brought something totally different. Was it good? YES! Very good actually. Then my dish was supposed to come with Chorizo. It didn't. Thankfully my buddy Paul TRIED to communicate to her what was going on and after about 30 minutes a Chorizo finally came out. What my friend Paul got was quite good as well. But he felt that his beef was over cooked. I tasted it and while I thought the flavors were excellent, it was clearly overdone. We both enjoyed the food. But when nobody in the restaurant does NOT speak any ENGLISH in your own COUNTRY, then I do have an issue. I'm ALL for speaking another language. Both my parents "Mother" languages were not English either (Tagalog and Croatian). But they learned. So we found this little treasure off of South Blvd, based solely on the awesome Yelp reviews. We walked in and were greeted and seated right away. Chips and salsa were presented immediately and then we got our menus. I loved the menu...there were tons of pages and options...anything you could possibly want chicken, seafood, beef, steak and great pictures under most all the dishes so you can see exactly what you will be getting which made me as a hungry and confused first timer very happy! After some questions and review of the menu we finally ordered I opted for the lunch special, burritos and cream sauce. Okay, first things first,I agree with the previous review portion size here is here is out of control!!! There were so many plates always coming out the kitchen loaded with tons of great food! I couldn't wait to get mine and I was not disappointed! When my burritos arrived all I could get out was OMG! They were huge! Packed with delicious shredded chicken and rice... My favorite part of the dish was the sauce. It was so flavorful and had a very nice kick, but if you want to kick it up make sure to ask for some of the hot sauce from the kitchen, it's so freaking good! Maybe I came in with the wrong expectations? Based on reviews I was let down. We stopped by on a Sunday evening late (around 10:30pm) the place had several tables available but surprisingly was pretty busy. Service was really bad, there were at least 6 or 7 servers all laughing and hanging around, you could hear music and laughter coming from the kitchen....to be honest it felt like there was no manager around and the employees were just having a good time. Food took a long time to come out, we got chips and salsa which were just ok, and no one checked on drink refills. Food finally came out, but one plate at a time, so it was either eat together or eat warm food...and the food was again just ok. Portions are large but quality is poor and not worth the price in my opinion. Pupusas were the only thing I'd come back for, meat was dry and over cooked, rice was bland, of a menu of over 6 pages everything tasted similar...which was not great. I'm always up for trying new places and my boyfriend loves Mexican so we thought we would venture out of our norm and try some place new. This place has a huge menu and the prices range along with it. Their lunch prices are what you would expect but if you don't find what you want there you'll pay a premium for their dinner prices. They have Mexican, Honduras and other south/central American food. The food was very good. Had great presentation, great flavor, and huge portions. The staff was friendly but the food took a long time. I probably wouldn't have noticed if we had chips and salsa to munch on. Our drinks were never refilled even though they sat empty half way through our meal. The highlight to any Mexican meal is the chips and salsa. This place is bomb!! The menu goes crazy, I have never seen one so large with Salvadorean, Honduran, and Mexican food. It's definitely a place you have to visit more than once to try everything. We ordered a torta de asada(which came with fries) 2 baleadas (they were huge) 2 pupusas, and tostones. Our total was only $33 and some change!! The torta was THE best I've ever had, the French fries were amazing, and the pupusas were delicious! I will say the baleadas weren't the best I've had, you can tell the tortillas are de la mano but tastes almost pancakey? And the tostones weren't the best I've had either, but everything else was phenomenal, they literally have over a hundred options, and the service was great! Our waitress was the sweetest. It is a Spanish speaking establishment and obviously we spoke in Spanish so I'm not sure if they speak English but I'd guess they do too!
