We had been here previously and enjoyed the experience, so we stopped in for dinner. Service is fantastic. You are barely in the seat, and chips and salsa are served! We ordered the queso this time and it was a good choice! Staff is attentive and checks in often. We ordered la mejor and pollo con chorizo, and both were delicious. I took most of it home to enjoy tomorrow! Portion sizes are large. Prices have gone up a bit since our last visit, but this is the case everywhere it seems . They have a full bar as well as beer and wine. read more

Great service, ok food. Quite expensive drinks- almost $20 for the skinny margarita. Our server, however, was very friendly and proactive. The shrimp and chicken fajitas were not bad by any means, but were a bit oily and lacked a bit of flavor for my liking. The chips and salsa were great! read more

Amazing experience at Monterrey in Matthews. Service, quality of food was wonderful. HANDMADE guac to DIE FOR!!! Seriously I filled up on THAT!!! Omg and the cheese!!! Do not go for the regular guacamole. Go for HOMEMADE! Best decision you will ever make! Don't get me wrong. The mixed guacamole is not bad - but it's what you could make it home. The handmade guacamole?! Oh my gosh, I would be happy eating it all by itself with the chips. Cannot say enough about the service, from the minute you walk in the door they are very attentive and gracious. The portions? Extremely generous. The quality of the food on par with what I expected. Which was five star. When I asked for something that was on the chalk menu at the front? Beef Birra? They had no problem making it. I opened it up and took pictures of it so you could see it, so flavorful! It even tasted better the next day because I had leftovers, it was so generous. Place was clean, food portions were great, highly highly recommend this for good affordable meals - we even had leftovers to take home! Probably because I stuffed my face on the handmade guacamole lol! Seriously? It's the best I've had anywhere. And that cheese dip? Make sure you try it! read more

Monterreys is a Mexican food staple! The service is quick, there are really good lunch specials and you know you can get in and out quickly. I really like their tacos, enchiladas and queso! I could eat a whole tub of queso and chips The chips are homemade and delicious. Monterreys also has drink specials and they make celebrating a birthday fun with a sombrero and singing. read more

So, after seeing a fellow yelper post some pictures on Instagram, and being in the area, I had to visit Monterray as it has been years since I have been and remember it being okay. Unfortunately this experience was so disappointing I am not sure I would return. We arrived shortly after 12:00pm on a Sunday. Once we were seated it took more than 10 minutes for someone to come to our table. No water, no chips and salsa, which I always remember being delivered upon arrival. Once we ordered drinks, and asked for Chips and Salsa, it took another 15 minutes for the waitress to return. And, before I go further, they were not busy what so ever, so not sure why it took so long. Move on. I ordered the #18, burrito, taco with rice and beans, and added a tostado and a side of pickled jalapeños and sour cream. Within 5 minutes the food arrived, which makes me question how things are prepped. Needless to say, very disappointing. I'll break my meal down: Chicken Burrito. Chicken was cooked well and had good flavor, but the red sauce definitely is not home made, and if it is taste like ketchup. Horrible. The taco, as you will see, nothing but a scoop of meat, not seasoned what so ever, and cheese. As for the tostado, it was the same bland ground beef so didn't eat it at all. The only promising thing was the chips and salsa. I will say the chips were fried just right, and I do like their salsa. With so many other Mexican restaurants that I love not sure I would return. Oh, one more thing. $2.95 for a Sprite, really?? Is that what a soda cost at other restaurants? If I would have known that I would have just had water. read more

Best Mexican Restaurant in the area of Monroe and Indian Trail!! We go there once a week - the location in Monroe is excellent! Always great service. Margaritas, salsa and all entrees are delicious! I love the enchiladas, the fajitas and they have some wonderful verde sauce. Would highly recommend. read more

The waitress was incredible! She was friendly, polite, and attentive. My toddler loved her and she ran out to return my phone when I accidentally forgot it. The food I ordered was nice, it was standard fare which is what I wanted. Everything was at a good quality and decent price. My husband's meal was fantastic, he got the special of the day which was a burrito el pastor. It was well balanced and well seasoned. The soup that it came with was tasty as well. Atmosphere was nice and the place was clean, the seats were comfortable. read more

Over-priced and mediocre. I know rent has gone up in Matthews, but there too many corners are being cut at this spot. It's Mexican. Nothing special. read more

Every time I order from here my food is delicious! The only thing I don't like with this restaurant is you can tell that they overly use vegetables in their dishes to divert or distract from the small amounts of meat in your dish, this restaurant isn't cheap either so I feel like for $25+ 1 meal I should get more meat than onions in my dish lol. I always ask for light onion for this reason but still always end up w a bunch of peppers & onions & barely any chicken. read more

Great food, great friendly service. Definitely recommend the Monterey Quesadilla if you are undecided as they have a large menu.

Four years ago my mom moved from downtown Matthews to right near Monterrey. I was SO hesitant to give up El Valle as that had been our staple for decades. Finally she got me to go and there is no turning back. Monterrey is the best Mexican food in Matthews. I love El Valle, I promise, and Azteca, and there is no last place here but Monterrey is a cut above. They use legit enchilada sauce, they give you super-sized Dos Equis for next to nothing, and they get crazy with their specials, something I don't see El Valle or Azteca doing. This place is going to be where I go with family for years forward. I love it. read more

Having been to the Monterrey in the University area several times for lunch, we decided to give this Monterrey on Independence a try for dinner this past weekend, and we weren't disappointed. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside, as it's in a strip mall near Outback Steakhouse. Once you get inside, though, you can see that they took the extra effort to actually do something with their square footage. It's not just one big room; they divided it up into sections and included high-backed booths for additional privacy during your dinner. The Mexican decor is very fitting and creates the ambiance. The dinner menu is a lot more extensive than lunch, but they still have combos from which you can choose. Although instead of about 6 or 7 combos, there's about 30. And those are just the numbered ones. There are many, many more with names. Ay, chihuahua! The thing to do is, if you know what you'd like Mexican-wise, keep that in your head and look for a meal that has those combinations. That's the quickest way to get through the menu! I had "La Mejor" (translated = "the best"). It came with a beef soft taco, chalupa (different from Taco Bell's), and chile relleno (which isn't really a stuffed chile, it's more of a pile of mush of cheese and meat (?) on top of a tiny chile pepper, but oh-so-good). And while the meal was good, I wouldn't call it the best. We'll go back, but I'll try something different next time. The chips and salsa they bring to your table are nothing out of the ordinary, but they always taste so good to whet your appetite. The salsa comes in a little decanter which you can then pour into your salsa bowl(s). It's unnecessary, but the presentation of it is very nice. It's also a good place for kids and groups. There is plenty of seating and they have a good number of choices for kids' meals. read more

Love love their pollo con crema plate! Best one in town! And their salsa is very good- that comes with chips!

This is my first time at this location and I was overall pretty pleased. The menu is slightly different compared to the other Monterrey's I've been to in the area. We came here for lunch and service was good and quick. The salsa is good but not that spicy. My husband got the chicken fajitas and I got the speedy gonzalez. Food was flavorful and filling. I would definitely come back if I was in the area again! read more

Definitely some of the better Mexican food in Matthews. Not sure why people are giving this place bad reviews. Just ignore them and go try it for yourself, like we did. The quesabirria tacos are really excellent (5/5 would order again / almost every time); and the arroz con pollo was pretty good, slightly Tex-Mex, but great if you like Tex-Mex). Seated very quickly, with chips and salsa; service was good (not much to complain about). read more

ALWAYS double check your order if you order to go. They NEVER EVER get it righT or they forget something...

Always great good and good price. Staff is always friendly and the facility is super clean.

I try to shy away from "chain" restaurants, but this one is exceptionally good. I'm a sucker for Mexican food anyway - heck I used to frequent this place at least once a week. The prices are great, usually the place is not that busy, so you get a good, hot meal without dinging the wallet (or purse) to hard. The dining room is split up to 2 sides, I guess at one point it was smoking and non-smoking (is my best guess)... but it was always exciting to come in and figure out which side they would seat you on. For the longest time my roommate and I kept getting seated on one side and couldn't figure out if the other side was much better. The grass is always greener...LOL but in this case, I don't think it matters. The chips and salsa that are offered with everything are pretty good, the salsa has a bit of a kick to it so I like it. You can easily fill up fast on chips, so be careful. read more

Monterrey Mexican Restaurant - Mexican Near Me - Matthews, North Carolina

I ate here last night for the first time for dinner. I was craving Mexican and decided I would venture away from my typical Azteca and try something new. Monterrey is tucked back in an unassuming strip mall. The inside is completely different than what you would expect on the outside. It is really nicely decorated and very "Mexican restaurant". We were promptly greeted with warm chips and salsa. I got the enchiladas verdes and they were pretty good. My boyfriend got the chicken and cheese (queso con pollo) and it was okay. I have definitely had better Mexican food, but this is a solid place for cheap, American-Mexican cuisine. I was disappointed that they only had chicken or ground beef tacos. I like shredded pork or beef tacos and would like to see that added to the options. read more

Authentic food. Great service. I've been there for both lunch and dinner. Always our go to place for real Mexican cuisine

One star because the service was quick and friendly. The food is something to be desired. The best way to describe it is the food is definitely geared to Anglo taste buds. Translation - generous amounts of cheese and skipped on flavor. My 9 year old added salt to his chips! Underflavored, and my taco came with shredded lettuce?? We should have looked at the available pictures a bit more bc they are pictured that way. What that doesn't account for is the Chile relleno on their lunch menu is just a mush of cheese and meat - not a Chile at all. The waitress apologized and said it is strange and what I was likely expecting was what on the menu is called a poblano relleno. I had that and was again underwhelmed. No crunch to the fried Chile, swimming in red sauce and I'm pretty sure the "crema" was just sour cream on top. If you expect REAL flavor this is not it. read more

The food was cold . Fast service . Rice tasted burnt and cold . Tasted like it's been sitting for 3 hours and they just kept adding water to keep it moist . Manager was very nice . Didn't ask for a refund because I tipped $10 in hopes it go to him but his staff look clueless as ever and they came by 3 times as if they were gonna place the chips and dip . They did the 4th time . Do I recommend going there ?? Only if you don't want to eat McDonald's near by . read more

I've been to this location 3x now & every single time it's been super delicious! I've ordered their "pollo con queso" pollo con chorizo" & stuffed quesadillas! All the food has so much flavor! I've been on a busy Friday night, which surprisingly there was no wait(maybe we just got lucky) the food comes out almost instantly, always hot & fresh. Also I'd recommend the Tamarindo margarita on the rocks with Tajin(sooo good) read more

I didn't expect much from a strip mall Mexican restaurant, but wow was I surprised. The chips and salsa was average. Where I thought this place shined was the entree. I had a vegetarian burrito with a cheese sauce on it and it was hands down one of the best burritos I've ever tasted. This was one of the first Mexican restaurants that had a separate section for vegetarian options (8 of them plus a few others throughout the menu). The service was friendly and quick. My girlfriend and I both had a margarita that was good, but not worth the $12 it cost. My girlfriend lives about 2 miles from here so we will definitely be back. read more

Tried the restaurant since we had a coupon from an Attraction Book (Eat Save) - bad choice. Saturday night, very empty, yet no time to do a good job. Waiter forgot we ordered an appetizer, the brought the entrees out....apparently he also forgot we said guacamole on the side, it was in wife's taco salad instead....she doesn't like guacamole.....and my meal included a chicken burrito with chick freshly removed from the refrigerator ICE COLD....they remade the food, no apologies, no comp for piss poor service, good margarita, but not the one ordered, ......paid bill leaving no tip and no return. read more

We ventured over here since Outback next door was a nightmare. SO GLAD WE DID. THIS PLACE IS GOOD! We walked next door and entered. The entrance seemed slightly seedy with tinted glass windows. It had the feeling like you were about to enter a low class titty bar. When we got inside...it was nice and clean. The food was EXCELLENT, FRESH, and seasoned just right. I think we will put this place in our normal rotation of eating. It could quite possibly be the best Mexican food ive had in Charlotte. read more

Sometimes I get mad at Yelp because I just don't understand how places get such bad ratings. I was hesitant to eat here and thankfully I decided to ignore the Yelp review. Monterrey Mexican Restaurant - Mexican Near Me - Matthews, North Carolina

My favorite Mexican restaurant of all times; from Cali to Texas and back home to NC, this place is still my favorite. The cheese dip is one-of-a-kind & the special nachos (I prefer chicken) are a meal all by themselves. Service is normally good, but peak times, like any place, can be a little slow. I prefer this location but the University is good too (and bigger). read more

This is one of our go-to inexpensive dinner places. Their margarita's are good and very large if you get anything but the small. The food is good, I'm a fan of the La Mejor and my hubby always gets Pollo con Crema. Take home boxes are standard for us at Monterrey having left overs for the next day. The service can be hit of miss, but typically they are very attentive and food comes out quickly. The dining room is a bit of a dive and sad. The booths and tables have seen better days. It could certainly use a face-lift. read more

Have been here a couple of times since 1. New to the area and 2. Love Mexican! Sadly disappointed the last 2 times we have gone. Queso was cold but tasty. ordered fajitas which was 2/3 onions and peppers. Asked for no guacamole salad which the waitress interpreted as no lettuce and sour cream as well. Asked for side of black beans which tasted like the came straight from the can and weren't even hot enough to melt the cheese that was sprinkled on top. Took 10 minutes to get the check and it wasn't until we walked to the front after another 10 minutes of waiting for our waitress to come get our money to find out that the person behind the cash register can't take money and still had to wait for the waitress. read more
