Popped in to support a local Latino-owned small business in light of the current environment. Found a lovely family-run establishment that I could not have been happier to support. Enjoyed a cheap drink while we waited for our takeout order. Food was plentiful, and while we intentionally overordered, I cannot say enough about affordability. Highlight was the sweet family that runs this place. The son served us, and engaged us in conversation. The mom was a sweetheart who helped take our order and even created a "dealer's choice" dish for a vegetarian in our party. East Charlotte is great because of businesses like this. Authentic !!!! Yessssss. This is where you can find real El Salvadoran food. I got the fried fish ($14) and it was very meaty and crispy. The sauce was a spicy chipotle that came with it. On the plate was a salad that had a light thousand island-like dressing. The beans were very unique. They were seemingly pureed with rice on the side. It was so much food, I could only finish one side of the fish. You MUST get the papusas ($2 each). Seriously, it's the reason to come here. They have pork and cheese, bean and cheese, and loroco (flower) and cheese. They are served with a vinegar slaw and light tomato-like watery sauce. Yummy !!! A gal with me got the bistec chipotle ($13). It had red, yellow, orange, and green peppers along with onions and I think carrots. It also came with a salad, rice and beans and she could not finish. Another gal got beef tacos. These looked like quality meat. The meat was larger pieces and not fatty. They looked excellent. Another gal got a bistec quesadilla and pastellitos de pollo. They reminded me of chicken pot pie empanadas. They had carrots and potato inside with a soup-like mixture. Finally SAVE ROOM FOR FLAN ! YESSS! ($3.50) They make it here themselves and you can tell the quality ! The owner took our order and other waitresses delivered the food. I got a horchata and it was good. This place has some delicious but I mean delicious pupusas! Tried a a handful of places nearby but these are my favorite. This is why: 1. They're cheap at just $1.50 each 2. They're huge (compared to other local places) 3. Curtido aka slaw that comes with pupusas is always fresh and plentiful 4. The pupusas are so meaty and full of cheese At other local places I need at least 4 to fill me up, this place fills me up with just 2! The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is the place is kinda empty and lacking some ambience. So although I love their pupusas I will most likely take them to go. Very good restaurant. We ended up here by accident. Apparently we were supposed to be at the place next door, but we'll call this a "happy accident". I liked everything I tried. I had a bit of papusa and it was great, so I ordered two to go. My own meal was the shrimp and rice. I don't know what made me order this, but I was quite pleased with my decision making skills. So good. Seriously. I'm trying to hurry with this review so I can go eat my leftovers. Also, I'm not sure if it's because we intimidated the waitress or just out of good customer service, but a man, presumably the manager, came by to help with the order taking. He was pleasant, as was the waitress...the woman at the register could have smiled a bit more, but she was pleasant enough. I will definitely be back. read more

Was very excited to try this restaurant on Central Avenue. Have not had much Salvadoran food and this restaurant not only had great reviews, but a very high sanitation score. First impression: fun decor and typical Salvadoran music playing. First food item delivered was a basket of chips with some salsa. Really good. I ordered a papusa with cheese (basically a fried tortilla filled with cheese), grilled chicken, rice, and guacamole. The papusa was served with maybe the best slaw that I have ever eaten. Instead of a mayo base, it had a lemony flavor. Totally delicious. The guacamole was a treat. I normally don't like guacamole. This was phenomenal. The fresh salsa that was served on the entree plate was so good that I didn't care that I would taste onions the rest of the day! The only thing a bit amiss was the service. As we were almost finished with our meal, we glanced at the basket of chips and saw a long black hair in the basket. I pointed it out to our young waitress and she took the basket away. No apologies or offer to do anything to make amends. The irony is that we saw the cook and she was wearing a hair net. I think all restaurants should require their servers with long hair to wear hair nets. This is something that could happen anywhere and it really never happens to me. Because the food was so great and the sanitation score so high, I will give them a pass. They do, however, need to train their wait staff on how to handle these kind of issues. One funny thing was that my friend, Virginia, ordered a bowl of the chicken soup with a papusa. She is not a big eater. Well, when her soup was served, it came with a huge plate of chicken and rice and other things. It took awhile to figure out that she was supposed to put these things in the bowl of soup. At first, she tasted the soup and pushed it aside. Was not impressed. Once we realized that all the stuff on her plate was meant for the soup, it became a different experience! The owner/manager or whoever he is does not like serving African Americans. I would always order papusas. Took my friend there to try something new. We got ceviche, papusas and lemonade. My friend didn't care for the food so a waiter asked if he wanted something else instead and he said no it was okay, he just doesn't want it. He barely took a bite of it. She brings the check and still charged him which he didn't want to pay for something he didn't like and literally didn't eat. The manager came out with an attitude like we're a small market and we can't afford to give out feee food. Offended AF I said nobody is asking for anything free we're sinoky asking for customer service which you clearly don't have and that I'll take care of the entire tab. As I get up and I pulled out cash that I am counting, he comes back up to me and says. Are you gonna pay or not? And that's my thing with you people if you wanted fried chicken you could've gone somewhere else! I said you people! ohh that's what it is? You're a racist piece of Shit and you think we're looking for a handout. F* you and this tab. He then look shock and tried to defend his racist comment. Me and my friend left and will never be back. The ambience was much better than some of the other Latin American restaurants in the area... Their portions are humongous and everything is priced reasonably.. We tried their yuca fries with chicharones and papusas.. Yuca fries were excellent but we've had better chicharones and papusas - these lacked flavor.. I bought a coupon for this restaurant on restaurant.com and they would not accept it. They said nobody there knew how use it. After explaining all you had to do is call the number on the certificate in English and Spanish mind you they still refused to accept. The food was delicious, just wish there customer service matched. They should not have signed up on that website if they did not know how to use the coupon. read more

This restaurant is amazing. Being a half El Salvadoran from Southern California I am hard to please, that being said when we got our plate of pupusas and they had the crispy chewy cheese that escaped on the grill we knew things were looking up for us. The pupasas taste great, are nice in size especially for the price, the cortido is crispy, salty, sour and slightly spicy, excellently done. The staff was very friendly and we met the owner wen we paid, he was extremely nice and spent a minute with us telling us about himself, his family, and the restaurant. We will be back!
