Had some free time during a trip to Arcata and my friends and I decided to stop in at Cafe Phoenix. We were greeted by one of those colored chalk menus and I was immediiately intrigued; this wasn't going to be one of those ho-hum lunches...it was going to be an adventure. Before ordering, we scoped out the grounds for the perfect table. There is seating out front on the side of the building, under umbrellas, there is a semi-shaded patio set in the back garden area, and if that's not enough choice, there are tables and counters at various heights inside of the modernized building. Choosing an inside table with filtered sunlight, we set out to order (tables in the garden were understandably taken, but we found a table that allowed us to look out upon it.) There were dishes with which I was unfamiliar and very pleased that the young lady knew answers to the questions we posed. We each ordered a dish and then had several items "for the table". One of my dining guests is less adventurous and inquired about the possibility of a quesadillas, which was not on the menu, but they were happy to make her. Another of us chose the "Bowl of Good Food" and I decided on the vegetable curry with bread. We toured the garden, which is encouraged while touching anything in it is not (I appreciate that). The organic garden had an abundance of herbs along with squash, tomatoes, possibly developing Brussels sprouts, Fava beans and more. Talk about fresh and local! The food arrived and we had little space on our table. In addition to our individual orders, we had a blueberry scone, a garden salad (huge), and a plate of tacu tacu. My friends quesadilla was grand, with delicately sliced apple and golden cherry tomatoes adorning the plate. She smiled as she tasted it, telling us "you gotta try this". My other companion was starting through the layers of his "Bowl of Good Food" which included richly flavored rice, refried beans and I'm not sure what else, but I can report that he scraped the bowl at the end, so nuf said. The vegetable curry was artistic; pleasant to look at as well as pleasing to taste. I like some spice so received a bottle of their house made hot sauce and several shakes of this brought it to just the right combination of savory and spicy. So good. And the bread: I wasn't certain at first about spending $2 extra for bread and butter, but once it came, I understood. The bread is essentially a full small round loaf, partially sliced. It's incredibly good, crusty, rustic bread, baked by a local gentleman. The combination of this handcrafted bread with the thoughtful, perfect flavors of the curry was ideal. Tacu tacu, it was explained on the menu, is a Peruvian dish of rice, quinoa beans and spices, all mixed together then formed into patties and cooked. This came with a mildly spicy sauce drizzled over the plate and was quite delectable. Avocado slices adorning the tops of the patties just made it that much better. The pickled onions atop were it's crowning glory. The salad was enormous. It was layered and decorated with so many colorful and flavorful vegetables that I'm sure I'm leaving some out, but I recall 3 types of lettuce, grated carrot, cucumber slices and what I think was an olive oil dressing. Needless to say, we left with two to-go containers, which I was delighted to see were compostable products. There is a sign in the dining room asking you to leave unwanted food on your plates, so they can compost it! Way to be environmentally friendly, Cafe Phoenix! If traveling through the area, this is a must do for vegans, vegetarians, health conscious and people looking for a good meal. If you live in Arcata/Eureka/McKinleyville, you should already be a regular. read more

Cafe Phoenix is my favorite place to get breakfast or brunch in Arcata. The prices for the quality of food is superb. The staff is friendly, helpful, and have been doing a great job with covid and the busy atmosphere. I've been here a few times and have never been disappointed with what I've ordered, but I have to admit that I love their breakfast menu more than anything. My personal favorite is the hash, as the potatoes are cooked to perfection and the spices make you salivate! The chia seed pudding was something that I put off trying for a while because I've made it at home and why spend $5-8 on something you can diy....but I will never make my own again! I'm coming straight here to get my chia pudding fix because their chia pudding is heavenly! It's light, fluffy, and the fruits they serve with it are delicious. Their outdoor seating is beautiful and comfortable, there are multiple tables but they're all spaced out well enough so that it doesn't feel chaotic and busy even when every table is full. During my last visit, I decided to dine outside and have my pup with me. I appreciated that they have water bowls for their four legged guests. A few months ago I had come in with my pup & the woman who served me had said that only service dogs were allowed to be at the cafe- understandable, but was rather frustrating for me because my dog is a service dog. Just because I'm young and look healthy doesn't mean I don't have a disability (: I decided to just take my food to go rather than eating there because I felt so uncomfortable after. Highly recommend the staff keeps this in mind when acknowledging furry friends at the cafe. Overall, this cafe is a warm, welcoming, and the staff is very friendly. read more

You'll definitely want to eat here next time you are in Arcata, CA. There's a large, hip outdoor garden where they grow their own food and where you can rub shoulders with many of the in-the-know-locals. The tables are spaciously placed, so there will be no fear of germ sharing. Everything will be made fresh, so expect to wait a good 10 - 15 minutes, or order in advance. I suggest the chicken pesto sandwich on local bread, I forget the name, maybe FishHook bread or something similar. They add white cheddar. Their miso soup, which comes with, is very hippy, and very good-- reminds me of my college days. I'd happily return here a thousand times, and I hope I make it back here at least once again, but I don't find myself in Arcata all too often. Maybe that will change. read more

Espresso machine barista knows how to brew a good cuppa joe. Larger tables that can seat seven, a window bar if you come alone and varied seating with hj and low tables has something for all. The bowl of good food is just that. All fresh ingredients delight your tastebuds and belly. It is easy to recognize this business is a labor of love. I can taste it in every bite. read more

First and foremost Cassandra provided exceptional customer service and that is one of the main reasons why Cafe Phoenix deserves 5 stars. She was very attentive and made sure to check up on us. The Chia vanilla pudding which also contains pieces of fruit is delicious. Their Yerba mate drink that also contains limeade is a great drink to satisfy the thirst and it tastes good. This is by far one of the best restaurants in Arcata. Great friendly service and their food is super high quality with all organic and local ingredients (from what I understand). They have wonderful gluten free options as well as vegan options and yummy high quality meats, too. The smoothies are amazing! Everything on the menu is healthy and hearty and delish. My wife is vegan, and I'm an omnivore, but Cafe Phoenix accomodates us both nicely. The food is good, with a tofu scramble being my wife's fave so far, and for me the phatty omelet with side of bacon is the bomb. Decor is homey though clean. I was excited to try this place after seeing all these pictures of the types of food they serve and reading about all the good reviews below but after my lunch here today, I do not think I will be returning or recommending this place to anyone. Upon entering, we greeted the cashier with a hello and a smile and she completely ignored us. She had no personality and was not friendly or pleasant at all. I ordered the Classic Phoenix and my fiancé ordered the 'omlet' (which is how they spelled it on their menu). $35 later for 2 meals, a smoothie, and a cappuccino, the food arrived at our table and it looked delicious! It tasted, however, like nothing. There was absolutely no seasoning on the potatoes or the grilled vegetables. My fiancé said his 'omlet' would have been tasteless if not for the small amount of feta cheese inside. There were no seasonings or flavorings fried into the 'omlet' at all. At least my vegetables tasted fresh and were grilled very nicely. I had ordered my $3.50 8oz cappuccino with whole milk and some vanilla flavoring but I could not taste vanilla in it at all nor any creaminess from the whole milk. My fiancé said his $7 16oz smoothie was room temperature and he could not taste some of the key ingredients of the smoothie such as mint & honey. This leads me to believe that those ingredients were missing or substituted with other fillers. Overall, I paid $25 for a huge amount of left over tasteless potatoes and eggs that I now have to take home to re-heat and season myself for another meal. And $10 for drinks that were not worth that price at all. Maybe their cold meals are worth the price but their coffee & hot breakfast/brunch items are not. read more

The grilled toast was a divine shmorgishborg of poached egg, spinach, caramelized onion, mushrooms, and tomato. Overall we recommend. This place is incredibly over priced for the limited menu they offer. I tried to get a salad and add a protein, but they didn't even have chicken, let alone quinoa which really surprised me since this is supposed to be a vegan friendly "heath food" restaurant. Even without a protein, the salad was still $10 which is frankly ridiculous for a plate of greens. I also got a smoothie that was $8 and had 4 ingredients in it and tasted literally like slightly flavored milk. Very disappointed with what I thought would be a great new place to eat. read more

Cafe Phoenix offers generous portions made with fresh ingredients. I heard that the kitchen uses vegetables grown onsite; it can't get much fresher than that! Our son, who is vegan, introduced us to his favorite restaurant in Arcata, Cafe Phoenix. It can be tricky to find places to eat that offer a good selection for both vegan and non-vegan diners; Cafe Phoenix satisfies both with ease! My husband and I ordered the Hash with eggs (vs tofu), and we loved it! It was the most satisfying meal we have had during our weekend stay in the Arcata/Eureka area. We ordered the Ham n' Cheese sandwich for our 12yr old son, substituting in cheddar cheese. Unfortunately, it wasn't what we expected; I couldn't place what was used in the sandwich, but the closest thing I could think of was that it tasted like they used ginger (which sadly, neither of us are fond of). My husband and I are visiting our grown children and helping them with their new son and work schedule . I yelped some places for us to try and Cafe Phoenix came up . We were so pleasantly surprised . The cafe is small and quaint. Cute. A beautiful garden setting in the back with some seating and some seating inside as well. We shared a bowl of good food and a small chia pudding . Both were simply delicious !!! We will definitely return . You can make your choices vegan if you like on most dishes . They do have turkey . I LOVE CAFE PHOENIX! The staff is amazing. So warm and friendly. I bring people there all the time. I feel like I eat there once a week. The food is so clean and delicious. They have so many great specials to choose from daily. Some of my favorites have been there cornbread breakfast, the arugula salad. If you have never been you should definitely change that. The only thing I would change is I want them open everyday of the week, but only out of my own selfish needs. They are absolutely fabulous. Love love love! I admit I always get an omelette with salad and potatoes with a side of sausage BUT the entire menu is AMAZING! I live the owner and Chef Connie and her dedication to local organicc. Cafe Phoenix is exactly what Arcata needs! It's like the food you make at home- but better! Farm fresh meals prepared beautifully with reasonable prices in a sunny restaurant with friendly staff and an all around great atmosphere. The menu changes daily, and reflects available produce that is in season. Personally I find the menu being different every day a little much- it doesn't allow for a consistent favorite dish, but many of the menu items share a similar theme/structure. They also have some great espresso drinks and smoothies. My only complain is that many of the menu items seem very meat and egg centered - I've tried to substitute them out, but they usually taste like the recipe is relying on animal products. Not great for a restaurant with their image, hopefully soon there will be more vegetarian and vegan friendly options! read more

Side salad had a heavenly light dressing, and the potatoes had a great surface area to mass ratio that provided near perfect balance between crispy and tender. Farm to table yum, nutritiously dense delicious food. - Turmeric milk is fantastic. - The salads satisfy. -easily negotiated substitutions - Menu changes with availability - I find the smoothies lackluster (sounding better than they taste, have tried the different protein powders but they're too chalky for me). - baked goods range from omg to meh - freshly brewed cup of coffee is too pricy for mid range coffee experience. - awesome house made hot sauces - killer patio!! - stick with the entrees. I find this to be what this place excels best at. never been disappointed with this place. It's healthy brunch done local & well. There has often been "one thing off" or not tasting so good on the table, occasionally a very airy (forgetting everything, missing things on the order) sort of customer service experience... but we tend to go here in a group and order a ton of food...
