Many people have grilled cheese and tomato soup. Lucky people have Ararat's spinach pie and chilled dill buttermilk soup.

Chef Ararat welcomes you into his restaurant like it is his home because it is his heart. You can see it in everything from the hand-selected wines and from-scratch food to the decor. We were privileged to sit at his 'Living Room' table in the front of the restaurant. He gave us a night of unexpected delights! From the bite of the beet carpacchio to the smooth finish of the dark chocolate torte with jalapeño chutney, the food was an adventure from start to finish. However, the true highlight of the evening was Ararat himself! He guides you through the menu and your night with humor, joy, and love. You feel like a regular after one course and will want to return and bring friends!

Mixed dessert platter. Citrus cake and baklava were the highlights

I was here with one other a while ago and we shared a bunch of dishes and if you're looking for a fun unique dining experience, I would suggest this spot. You feel like you're in someone's home with that someone being a very eccentric fun chef who makes everything, knows the daily menu by heart, gives recommendations and free things, and is a big of a character as the restaurant. It's not the best food I've ever had but the experience was so much fun and I would highly recommend this place and if I lived in Greenpoint, I would presumably stop here once a month just to support this place and try new things. The place has soft drinks and wine which consisted of a couple wines from Armenia as well as some Italian ones. I ordered a white wine which was light and minerally and went with most things. The prices here are very reasonable and that especially applies to the prix fixe which is $25 which comes with an appetizer, entree, and dessert but otherwise the ordering is simple with appetizers just being $8 and all entrees are $15. The chef gave us a freebee small portion of the Tabbouli listed as a classic Armenian salad with parsley, scallions, tomato, and bulghur wheat. I have always liked the mix of the texture of the bulghur/bulgur with the chopped tomatoes and this was no exception here. The veggies were fresh and this was a standard tasty version of this light refreshing salad. The Handy's Spinach Pie with butter softened onions, pine nuts, and cardamom seeds was my favorite of the appetizers. It was a unique take on a spinach pie as the cardamom seeds and pine nuts added a unique nuttiness and light spice. The filo dough was light and airy as well. Very tasty. Least favorite of the appetizers we ordered but still good were the Mussels listed as being steeped in white wine, garlic and herbs. There were plenty of them and the mussels were well prepared with all of them being fully open. The broth was a tad lighter than other spots but still tasty. For main dishes, we went with one order of the Armenian Plate each as well as one of the secret entrees. Said Armenian Plate had grilled marinated pork and chicken, lulu kebab, basmati rice, grape leaves, and grilled peppers/onions. The best of the bunch was the lulu/ground meat as normal for spots around this part of the world as the meat was very tender and well flavored. The pork was pretty tasty but unfortunately, the chicken was a tad dry but the yogurt on top helped with said dryness. Otherwise, the grilled veggies went with everything and the basmati rice could have been a bit more fluffy but it was fine. The grape leaves were also very solid even in comparison to the outstanding homemade ones I had recently. The entree at the day was a stuffed pepper with some sausage, cheese, and a bunch of other things which sounded tasty but we went with the "Secret Entree" which for the day was a Beef Bourguignon which came with said beef, potato, carrot, mushrooms, onions and orange zest flavored mashed potatoes which the chef split in half which was a nice touch for sharing and this was the best dish of the night. The beef (along with the mushrooms/carrots/onion) were all very tender and the wine sauce was well flavored with the mashed potatoes having a unique fun light fruity sweetness. I tend to find mashed potatoes to be my least favorite part of this dish but this was uniquely and very deliciously elevated. No complaints at all for this dish outside of thinking while eating it that I wish we went with the two daily entrees as I wanted a full portion of this. He asked us if we wanted a mixed platter for dessert which we said sure. The desserts include a walnut Baklava, a citrusy Cake, a Chocolate Lava Cake with a spiced fruit relish, and a Coffee Crème Brûlée which was adorably served in a coffee cup. The walnut baklava was barely sweetened which is definitely my preference, the citrus cake reminded me to an extent of portokalopita from Greek spots in terms of texture thought this had mango and was very moist and tasty, the lava cake had a unique spice and an alright texture, and the crème brûlée was well prepared with a light coffee flavor. All were tasty. The chef also gave us some Macaroons prior to the check which had some cherry I believe which were light very tasty. We left quite full for a reasonable price. If you don't mind an eccentric chef with pretty solid food, I would recommend this spot in a heartbeat. I can look past most of the faults (mostly the Armenian plate) for that reason along with the price point. If this was less reasonable or came with worse service, I'd probably give this spot an upper 3 but for said things, I'll bump it up to a bare 4.5.

Such an amazing experience! The food is incredible and the owner/chef really cares about your dining experience. Would choose this cafe over most restaurants in Manhattan any day!

Saw the reviews and decided to give Sevan Restaurant a try. First thing, this is an Armenian restaurant designed for catering a party or special event. Very opulent in its decor. Walked in and had to ask if they were serving food because the restaurant space was set up to cater to celebrations. The restaurant was empty except for a table with two women. My friend and I had a round table that normally seat more than 4 people and we ended up with a lot of table space! Our server was very polite and attentive. We ordered a babaganoush, a pita pizza that's folded in half with ground beef, a Mediterranean salad and a kabob combo over rice. Food was tasty and loved the salad dressing. If you want an elegant restaurant to yourselves, this is the place.

For many years - I mean many as in when I was a kid living in Ridgefield, we always had a bag of lahmajoun from Middle East Lahmajoun in Fairview in the fridge. But I thought that place had closed down because frankly it looks like it's not in business and every time I go it's closed. And every time I call it appeared to be closed. But a few weeks ago when we had a late lunch at the Greek restaurant across the street I asked and someone said oh no they still make them there but they're not open very often . So I put it on my mental to do list to follow up on that. But unless "Siri remind(s) me at 10 AM tomorrow" about them, items on my mental to-do list evaporate. Any hoo, then the other day I experienced an absolutely horrendous lahmajoun at a Turkish restaurant which jogged my memory to look. Well today the meat craving made me do it. I was driving by and said hmmm let me Google. Well it is only open until 2 pm. I called because it was 2 and he answered and said yeah I'll be here for about another 20 minutes! And I said OK cause I'm sitting outside (geez now he probably thinks I'm a stalker). So I got a bag of a dozen ($20). And lemme tell you.... it's as great as I remember!!! Everything was delicious. The hummus was well seasoned the falafel had a nice crunch. It went well with the warm puffy gyro bread that came to the table. The burrata was wasm and creamy. I love the vinaigrette on the fish. I ended up eating most of it. The scallops were the sweetest, most tender ones I have ever had. The tenderloin skewers were tender and well seasoned. I liked the grape leaves but the rice consistency was very soft almost mushy and you can barely tell there were mushrooms. There was barely any mushrooms flavor. Next we all chose an entree. I got the duck breast, my husband and daughter each had the beef tenderloin. The duck breast was smaller than i expected. The skin was nicely seared and very crispy but boy did it give my jaw a workout. It was done medium rare. It was juicy but tough. The small beef tenderloin was tender and smoky. The waiter poured the sauce over the tenderloin for added flavor. Finally dessert was a fruit plate with ice cream and pudding. The fruit was fresh and the flavors of the ice cream and pudding unique. It was a nice end to a good brunch. The price was a little expensive at $85 a person.
