Stopped by Cafe Kubal for a little grab and go. This location is in a pretty nondescript strip mall (love a strip mall gem!). Parking was easy peasy. I arrived late morning and they were pretty slow so I was able to order right away. They have a fun seasonal latte menu, which I always love. I tried to get their lumberjack latte but they were out of maple, so I opted for the sugar cookie latte, which was a warm, vanilla, cup of comfort. For my breakfast, I was hoping to get their oatmeal, but they were also out of that (I get it, it was after 10am) so I opted for an egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. During my business trips, i'm always on the hunt for the best coffee shop in the city that I'm visiting. On this particular trip I tried five different coffee shops and it came down to Cafe Kubal & Recess Coffee. Both are different in comparison, not overwhelmingly good but still very worthy of a visit. My go to is the cappuccino. To me is like judging a good Italian restaurant by how good they make a lasagna. To me, Kubal might get the edge over Recess for its distinct taste, but it's close, in the end you cant go wrong with either one. I'll give Recess the nod on ambiance, much more comfy and inviting. If you are bouyei with your coffee, give Kubal a try. It's a solid option. read more

The coffee here was actually good. After seeing rave reviews, and given that's what we were after, it just made sense to try it out. It's kind of out of the way if you're trying to make a quick pitstop off the freeway, but it's not terrible. The ordering experience was a little weird. We did the drive through option. The worker seemed confused by what was on the menu....we had to tell her what "pick 2" meant. Kind of odd. She didn't offer us different muffins, and just said "we have pumpkin...is that ok?" We really enjoyed our visit here and we usually make it a point to come to this location when we're in town as it's convenient for the places we stay near carrier circle. They have awesome drinks and food with good prices. They have cute art for sale all over the place that you can buy and we got a super cute cat picture. There are a good number of tables and chairs to eat inside and some tables outside as well. My only complaint about this place is the one staff member with the blonde /brown hair. She's got a bad attitude and is very rude to customers and seems genuinely unhappy to be there. Cafe kubal is our go to place for coffee, brunch sandwiches whether we order through Grubhub or we are walking in. They are super quick and have always been super nice! They also just expanded so it's much bigger with an extra room where you can sit and do work! When we order for delivery, everything comes wrapped, tidy, and still warm. Some of their sandwiches have changed and are not updated on the menu; however, they are very good at calling you for substitutions, which is greatly appreciated. The past two times when we have ordered, our coffee was made incorrectly and a sandwich was incorrect. Maybe a glitch! But their coffee is great even with nothing extra in it!! read more

We stopped in to this Cafe Kubal on a wends early afternoon.we had never been to this location . A young man and young woman were working.We frequently go to Manlius and North Syracuse locations ( which we love) The ambience was very different at this location. No one was speaking . Neither staff member spoke to us.We had to pull answers from the young man at register and he couldn't answer questions about coffee. We order Lg Carmel late , and light roast reg. Med coffees. We ordered 2 scones, Blueberry Jalapeño. And Strawberry. Both were dry and seemed stale . ( we have gotten this many times b4 at other Cace Kubals) When I asked about the art work the girl said . This is the worst run of all the Kubal locations and it's really a shame. I went in 4 times this week and I am done trying. One day it was after 7 am and they hadn't opened yet. The next they were out of iced coffee lids which is annoying to try to take coffee to go without a lid, the next day they were just straight out of iced coffee at 730 am and then the next time I went in the person behind the counter had started waiting on some people who then walked away to the seating room for some reason and didn't finish their order. Kubal is a regular staple for me in my quest for caffeination. The coffee itself always seems to be a little under roasted for my tastes so I usually stick with espresso based beverages here. My go to being a vanilla latte. The vanilla here is pretty mild and gives just enough boost to the natural sweetness of steamed milk and espresso. I haven't had any food from this location but if it's anything like what is prepared downtown do yourself a favor and order something if you have a hankering. This location can be a little tricky to get out of if you need to head towards Thompson Rd and the parking lot can be tough to maneuver if you have a truck. For these reasons I tend to only go on lunch one every week or two. The café is homey and cute and has sufficient comfy seats for the size of the building. It is generally kept very clean which is a definite plus. The baristas are generally very nice though sometimes a bit pretentious. One scoffed at me when they had found out that I had worked at Starbucks for many years. Sorry I liked my barista job to come with a side of health benefits and tuition reimbursement! I stop here on my way to work about 3:30 pm. Coffee is delicious, I grab a cup of dark. They offer a variety of both dairy and non dairy creamer, along with a full slate of hand crafted drinks. All coffee is roasted locally, and beats the big box coffee place by miles (and flavor). This place smells weird. Like roasted burnt coffee beans. Anyway we stopped in while waiting for The Lion King across the street at the Landmark. It was around 6:30 and they closed at 7 (thank you for not kicking us out in the cold). Boyfriend ordered a coffee and I opted for blueberry tea. It was super flavorful but 3,000 degrees too hot. I can't comment on the coffee but boyfriend didn't complain. The vibe is pretty laid back and they make fresh wraps and sell "healthy" baked goods. A small was $7 and change. I pay $7 for Starbucks so whatever, I don't mind supporting a small local business, but I at least expect it to taste good. About half way through watching the barista prepare my drink I'm watching him pour whole milk into a hot coffee thinking maybe someone was ahead of me (even though it was dead inside) and I said "just wanted to make sure you heard my order correctly. Turns out he didn't, which was fine I understand lines get crossed. But then I watched him fill my 12 oz cup with ~7 oz oatmilk, then dissolve a tsp of literal brown sugar into 3 oz of hot water and swirl it around and dump it into my drink, then pour the hot espresso in, and add some ice cubes. My latte tastes like oatmilk and a hint of watered down espresso. I normally don't have an issue flavor wise with the north Syracuse location so I'll still offer 2 stars for the business, but if this is the quality of coffee they are putting out regularly, then some QA/QI is long overdue on the managements part. read more

Sorry Kubal, I wish I could give you more stars. Based on coffee alone, Cafe Kubal is spot-on but if you throw food into the mix, not so much. I don't come here often for lunch and know I remember why. Last time, my order was wrong and I discovered it when I got home. Today at least I found it before I left the cafe. After a 20 minute wait, I got my turkey and brie panini only to discover it was turkey and feta. The guy actually handed it to me and said "turkey with brie". When I asked him about it (I had watched him make it and assumed it was for someone else - silly me!) and inquired if it was feta he said "nope, brie". I open the box, turkey with feta. Another 10 minutes and I left with the correct sandwich sans the lettuce that they forgot to put on after toasting it. They offered me the other sandwich too as well as a couple free coffee coupons. I'll come back for the coffees but get my lunch somewhere else. It's too bad because the sandwiches really are quite tasty but not when they take a half hour to make. read more

I'm a coffee addict, and Cafe Kubal on James street is right by my school. I love coming here in the summer, however. I know there are several other locations spotted around Syracuse, including the one by Original Grain (need to go there soon, I've been stalking their Instagram and thinking about their wildly gorgeous healthy food for far too long) and the one by Dinosaur BBQ. In the winters, I like to order a vanilla latte. It's classic, and you can't really go wrong. Ordering this means it's simple; you can really taste the espresso. When I go to a new coffee shop I like to get a vanilla latte, because then you can discern the quality of the coffee. I work at Starbucks, and I adore hipster, distinct, and characteristic coffee shops. I kind of hate Starbucks espresso. Also the espresso at Cafe Kubal is caramel-y and deep. I've never had bitter espresso here (looking at you Starbucks). Back to the point, Cafe Kubal is the OG of coffee shops in Syracuse. I think my favorite location is the one by Original Grain, but they're all similar. I have yet to try their sandwiches, but I know their big, bakery-style cookies are a sweet and fulfilling complement to any coffee. They also have tea selections. When I last visited with my mom, she got the iced coconut oolong. It was absolutely refreshing, light, and such a perfect pick for a hot, sticky June day. For the summer, I typically get an iced latte with half vanilla, half rosemary. Rosemary is their signature syrup. It's not overly strong if you do half vanilla, half rosemary, but you still get some subtle flavor from the rosemary. Cafe Kubal also has lots of sandwiches and wraps, with some vegetarian selections. I just signed up for their reward system today, and you can receive points to add up to a free drink. Service: (SU) fairly absent. The skill of the baristas is impressive, with fancy latte pours. I've never noticed much friendly treatment, but that maybe the culture of traffic at SU. Food: Avoid. Or at least, be very careful. My mother-in-law ordered quiche, which was tossed in a microwave and served tepid. Environment: Furniture is made from pallets and coffee crates. While it is aesthetically and thematically pleasing, it is awful to sit on. Splintery cracked dry pine at odd angles. Fuel the roaster with this shit and get some proper furniture. Countless times I find myself heading up Midler to stop here before going home on 690 west. It is out of the way, but worth if for the awesome coffee they serve. I drink my coffee black, so it is important for it to have a solid flavor that does not have to drown in milk for it to be drinkable.
