As you can tell, Cafe Karla isn't a cafe at all - in fact, this is their prep/distribution location. However, you're more than welcomed to stop by and pick up their boxed salads or tea leaf dressings here at a cheaper price since you're dealing directly with the distributor rather than the grocery stores. Plus, the ingredients is fresher and you're able to see these salads made in real time. From the outside, your looking at what you'd believe is apartment complex. There are no signs for indication, no public parking, and the front small building will make you question if you're even at the rite place. When you knock on the door you're instantly greeted by a smile. The owner is real nice and has always invited me into the apartment. The inside is really small. The inside of the apartment is extremely small and has noticeably turned into a industrial kitchen - no seating but a wall full of industrial fridges to keep their products cold. CASH ONLY. Packaged salads here are amazingly $5 and the tea leaf dressing is around $6 compared to $7-9 prices at Berkeley Bowl West. If you're in need of cash, there is a bank in the corner of University and San Pablo but you can also find an ATM at the corner liqueur store one block away (with a hideous debit charge). So far, I've only seen Cafe Karla's products at Berkeley Bowl West in both the small cafe and prepackaged refrigerated sections. I'm pretty sure Andronico's is a no go since they recently got bought out or is going through some major rebuilding. Don't bother looking for it at Whole Food's either. But if you're in luck to find it elsewhere, message me and let me know. LOVE both the regular tea leaf and garlic tea leaf salad dressings. It's amazing how the flavors blend together - I've been hoarding two to three bottles of dressings at a time! Don't pass this up. If you haven't tried the Tea Leaf Salad's before, try them from Cafe Karla. A lot of other competitors charge pretty high ($9-18) so $5 isn't much if you find out that you're not a tea leaf fan.

How did I ever navigate life without Yelp? There is likely no way I would have found this little gem. No signage, no idea it's there. Looks like a ground floor apartment, bars on door and windows facing San Pablo. Knocked on front door through bars. A face appears through drawn mini blinds pointing toward the north side of building. The door opens and a pleasant young lady greets me and inquires if I want to buy green tea salad? I ask for two and a jar of the green tea dressing. (Because my Yelp crew told me what's up!) I stood in door half open watching pleasant gent stir frying noodles over a sterno. I commenting "man that looks yummy, do you have other menu items"? He said no, they do cater events and also "subcontract" some of the prep and pre cooking for many area food trucks in area. The noodles were for a specific truck but I forgot what he said. We laughed as he said even food has contractors and sub contractors! I had no idea. So now onto the salad. I agree with fellow yelper how much thoughtful Plastic packaging went into this little salad kit considering it's Bezerkeley. However doing it this way, you do control the amounts of ingredients used. And I imagine too much of this and not enough of that, can totally throw off the balance. Speaking of balance... it was so refreshingly fresh, clean and awesome! Crunchy, savory, salty, spicy, sweet, zesty and OMG Umami, mi mommy. Packed full of veggie fresh protein, not oily or slimmy. I felt like going on a hike up mount Tam. Fortunately it's cold and raining sideways. So I'll settle for sipping a hot cup green tea and waxing poetic about this salad and how grateful I am that Yelp once again helps uncover small little businesses that are passionate artisans of their crafts. And because the reviews are honest and informative, we all win!

Their tea leaf salads are incredible!! I'm addicted. I get them from Andronico's market- I highly recommend them.

What a great find via Yelp. As others have said, there is no sign, just knock on the side door. The tea leaf salad hit the spot!

The two of us ordered the Fiery Beef and Spicy Noodles and both I would highly recommend. The Fiery Beef was extremely tender with great flavor, my favorite of the two. Things changed: more breading on the chicken (spicy crispy chicken) and reduced protein in some of the other dishes, too. But the flavors still hit and its popularity hasn't dimmed much on the nights I've gone over the last few years. I bought their cookbook years back but much of what I like isn't in it, so I keep coming back for the food and community vibes. There is a communal table, which I appreciate though I tend to sit at the bar when I go alone. It's worth it to get a view of what's happening all around you. The B S in Alameda doesn't have the same energy or coziness, but it is easier to access with safer parking (now windows broken there but I've had that here and been hassled walking to/from) and dramatically shorter waits. The diversity of the diners is much lower than this one though (Alameda is still mostly old white people) and the menu has more options here, so I'll continue to return again and again and recommend it to others ... and hope to not have to replace car windows.

After my office moved from Downtown Berkeley to South Berkeley during COVID, my supervisor and I ate at Royal Rangoon a couple of times for lunch. I've dined at both the SF and Oakland locations before. Oakland started off really strong for me…read morebut over time the food felt a little inconsistent, and the SF location personally just did not hit for me. But this Berkeley location? Okayyyy now let's get into it. Parking here is definitely challenging, so give yourself extra time. We came on Mother's Day with reservations at 2 PM, right before they closed for their dinner reset at 3, and we were still seated pretty quickly which I appreciated, especially with how busy it was. We sat outside on the patio and honestly it was such a nice vibe. They do have outdoor heaters if needed, but the weather was perfect that day. We did everything à la carte for a party of 7. Appetizers: Vegan Spring Rolls: 5/5 Super crispy and fresh. The chili peanut sauce was so good we kept going back for more. Crispy Pork Belly: 1/5 Way too overcooked for our liking. It came out super dry and chewy, almost like a thick pork jerky. Definitely not something we would order again. Main dishes: Panang Neua: 5/5 OMG. This was the dish I came for and it absolutely delivered. The meat literally falls off the bone and melts in your mouth. The sauce leans salty, so pairing it with the blue rice balances everything out perfectly. So rich and flavorful. Crab Fried Rice: 5/5 The large chunks of crab really made this dish stand out. It was flavorful, not dry, and not overly mushy either. Solid all around. Hat Yai Fried Chicken: 2/5 Too thin and too dry for us. I would not reorder this dish, but the roti it came with was actually really good dipped into the sauce. Beef Larb: 5/5 Wagyu beef? Say less. This dish was perfectly seasoned and packed with flavor. Straight chef's kiss. Yellow Curry: 4/5 Honestly you really can't go wrong with yellow curry here. Comforting, flavorful, and paired well with everything else we ordered. And of course we ended with the mango sticky rice to share because you simply have to. It was the mango on top to finish the meal. Overall, this Berkeley location easily gave us the best experience out of the three. Great service, beautiful patio seating, and several dishes that were genuinely memorable. We'll definitely be back for that Panang Neua alone.

Why is finding good Thai in the East Bay so hard?…read more We ordered pretty classic stuff--pad Thai that somehow leaned way too sweet, and a green chicken curry that was so watered down it felt more like a soup than an actual curry. My husband also ended up getting food poisoning, which really sealed the deal on this one. We're pretty sure it was the mai tai served in a novelty cat cup... and now I have questions about how often that thing is actually getting properly cleaned. Let's just say I'm not thinking about it too hard. Anyway. Another Thai spot crossed off the list. The search continues.

The Roti Dip was OUT OF THIS WORLD (6/5). It exceeded my expectations. The Roti was very soft and crispy and the dip had an amazing coconut/herby taste. The waiter saw how much we loved the dip and brought us another one to use for our rice. Big shout out to her! The chicken wings were okay. Not that spicy for me (I have a high spice tolerance) but I expected them to be more savory. They were cooked very well though. I would give it a 3/5 Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed with my main which was the crispy whole dried fish. I am a sucker for whole fish dishes so I was pretty excited and expectant for something spectacular. The fish itself was bland. It was very crispy and cooked well but not really seasoned. I had thought the sauce they serve with it was intended to impart flavor on the fish, but the sauce was just very tangy and not flavorful. I did finish the fish though but it's not something I would get again. Overall a 2.5/5. Their coconut rice was good though I was expecting more of a coconut flavor with it. I would rate that a 4/5. It was cooked very well. I think this is a really nice place though, perhaps I just did not order the right or more popular dishes. I'll be coming back for the ROTI WITH DIP (It was that good) and to try the other items in their menu.
