The mustard and onions with the avocado and plantain are surprisingly good together. I ordered my sandwich with the madurros which were perfect- sweet and a little browned. My husband ordered the Cuban. The bread was perfect and the meat was abundant and flavorful. I agree-the bread is crispy on the outside and soft to get all the flavor on the inside. I came to this place to see what all the rave was about. My friend met reservations for us 2 on Sat 8/6/22. When we arrived we told them we had a reservation and they told us, "oh just so you know, we don't have pernil." Ok, we sat down and it took a bit long for our waitress to come over. She finally did and we ordered the taste of puerto rico platter and a pitcher of parcha sangria. We ordered our food and I wanted a cuban sandwich and I was reminded about there not being pernil. So I went with the bistec sandwich and maduros as a side. My friend ordered mofongo with arroz gon gandules. The sangria had way too much ice and then they gave us a glass with more ice!! It was watered down, couldn't even taste it. Then the waitress comes back n says sorry "the maduros are not ripe yet." So I ordered arroz con gandules. We really enjoyed the appetizer which came with alcapurrias, tostones, yuca fries, and empanadas. While we waited, I went to the bathroom and liked the sound of coqui. It reminded me of being in PR. The food however was disappointing, the arroz con gandules was so orange and had no flavor and the bistec sandwich had too much onions. We were halfway through our meal when the waitress came over and said "I'm sorry, we need this table for another reservation we have, if you want you can sit at the bar. Reservations are only 1 hour and a half long." Are you kidding me????? Mind you there were other empty tables around us, but we had to move???? The waitress then said let me talk to my manager, and came back and said "I'm sorry about that, you can stay there for another hour and 1/2." We didn't order dessert because of this disappointment, but I did want to try the famous cafe con leche. I got a coffee with too much cinnamon on it!!! I had the sangria flight they were all good and strong. Order a passion fruit one after I finished the flight, it hit. Started off with the Churrasco sliders they were fantastic and really tasteful. Wife had the shrimp mofongo and I had the Chicharron De Pollo white rice and red beans, classic and both plates didn't disappoint! The chicharron was breaded and fried but lightly you didn't feel gross after eating them and they weren't greasy at all. White rice and beans were very good as well. Portions were a good size as well, had my leftovers today...lol. We had a guava cheesecake to finish it off and just like every thing else that was delicious as well. Very creamy soft flavorful cheesecake. The tres leches looked amazing, next time. The decor was good, had a lot of authentic island vibe to it even the little sign that read abuela's room. Bathrooms were clean and it sounded like you were in EL Yunque, nice touch. We will be back ASAP, telling our friends to join us and being originally from the boros and moving up north this was a great surprise to have found such an authentic spot that felt like you were in your crib eating your titi's food. It's clear why Cafe con Leche won best Spanish food in the valley last year! It's not easy to make mofongo and pernil so moist, often times you get at least a few dry pieces in there. You guys nailed it and it was the best I ever had and don't even get me started on the yucca fries! Best yucca fries any of us have had! It almost tasted sweet and like, doughy? But not sweet? Can't even describe its perfection! The coquito cheesecake literally tasted like coquito but a light, fluffy version and it paired perfectly with the famous coquito latte! Excellent! From the service to how quickly we were seated the food the sangria all were excellent! We went for brunch and made reservations & were quickly seated upon arrival our excellent waitress came over to take our drink order ( I didn't get her name but she was a sweetheart) my husband got a Corona & I got the red sangria which was excellent I had multiple! The meat was seasoned perfectly, rice was spot on and tastes just like home. The mofongo was enormous, be ready to have some leftovers as the portions were abundant. Our family of 7 set out for an hour drive to get to this place after seeing it advertised on Instagram. It boasted authentic Latino food and appetizers that looked delicious. Well we should have realized it from the start. The GPS still shows their previous address and it took us a while to find the actual new location. After sitting down, we ordered Chuleta kan kan and 3 orders of Churrasco and the waitress started by saying that there wasn't any Chuleta kan kan and not nough for 3 Churrascos orders so we asked for 2. Another woman employees walked over and said that there wasn't any churrasco left at all. WTF. We should have gone with our original choice of Noches De Colombia in Newburgh. I have to say that after waiting to try the restaurant for weeks, we were very underwhelmed after our visit last night. We've previously enjoyed take out prior to the restaurant opening (When we tried to get takeout just after the restaurant opened, they said they were not doing takeout and but apparently takeout has resumed) and always enjoyed the food. We went last night for a date night and there are a few things that merit three stars. For weeks, I've been seeing on Facebook to email for reservations so when I emailed last week and got no response, I called on Wednesday. When I called, they told me that they don't take reservations anymore, it's first come first serve. So we arrived shortly after 6:30 last night and they asked if we called ahead. There's no mention of that on Facebook and they didn't tell me that on Wednesday but luckily they were able to seat us within a few minutes. In fact, when they posted yesterday, it mentioned "walk in only." They gave us a food menu and I was looking for drinks, but there's no drink menu. With all of the drinks advertised online, plus a bar, there should be a drink menu. Our waitress was very nice but we had to ask her to rattle off the drinks, half of which she seemed to forget. My husband asked if they had Sloop juice bomb, which they did but had to be sent back. There was either something wrong with the tap or it was not the right beer but it was not hazy and tasted "off." It didn't seem that they had any specials, sadly because I had been eyeing the chuletas kan kan for weeks. I'm not faulting them for that but then when we ordered, the waitress remembered that they were out of pernil. We started out with the taste of Puerto Rico sampler which was a variety platter of deep-fried, under-salted food. The pastelillos were hands down the best seasoned and most flavorful item on the platter. The tostones and yuca fries were dry and needed a dash of salt. The alcapurria was not good or well seasoned. I regretted that we had ordered an appetizer because at $16, it was disappointing. The two sauces that came with the food were fine but the one sauce seemed more like a dish of oil. Overall it was just a platter of dry deep-fried, heavy food which was not appealing. Also the wait staff brought one small plate for appetizer eating-there were two of us, so again, a service issue. Since they were out of the pernil that my husband wanted, he decided to go with the chicken sandwich. The flavor was good although he said the meat itself was dry. I decided to try the shrimp mofongo, which was also a miss in my book. The dish consisted of a gigantic dry ball of Mofongo which again, would've benefited greatly from salt and cooking the chunks of garlic through a bit more. It was only palatable when mixed with the sauce on the dish. It came with six shrimp which were equally bland and overcooked to the point of being hard. Overall the meal was definitely under seasoned and not well executed. The saving grace were the two Mojito's that I had which were absolutely delicious and fresh tasting. There's definitely potential but they need to work on formalizing reservations (or not), having drink menus (with prices), and having regular specials and training staff a bit more. We will probably not try the restaurant anytime soon but will order for takeout again. So as a new restaurant, I understand they are still trying to find a rhythm. Unfortunately we just did not have the best experience either with the service or the food. There's a lack of consistency and attention to detail that would go a long way to ensuring the restaurant's success. read more

There is something very special about Cafe Con Leche.. The food will make you feel like your eating in San Juan or Loiza right on the water... Some would say add Sofrito, Ajo etc to certain dishes but to each their own... I appreciate the effort to uphold great food. Decreasing Wait Time by adding Reservation system ( not email ) is the only suggestions I have. Waiting a hour to hour and half can be avoided if this restaurant would incorporate a computerized reservation system. I recommend Opentable, Resy , Thefork. Families and Large groups want to eat here, it would only help the success of the restaurant. read more

I had the utmost pleasure of a latin dining experience at Cafe Con Leche!!! It started with a warm & friendly greeting from the manager named Rosemary. This beautiful lady with her sweet( I think puerto-rican??) voice made me feel very welcome to the establishment. I asked for menu suggestions & she hit me with the Empenadas & Yuca fries. Wow!!! It was about 40 minutes for a table .. not bad.. the restaurant decor was nice .. staff very friendly.. service was fast, we got our food quickly! Now the food itself, unfortunately not impressed at all. I was disappointed and so was hubby. The tostones were not crispy and not salted enough. The garlic dip was way to "vinegary". The yuca fries were good and so were the empanadas. The presentation of the food was eye catching. The beans were like soup, my husband didn't even eat them. He ordered the pernil with yellow rice. I ordered bacalaitos, which are codfish fritters. What I received was a large pancake with an overwhelming amount of red and green bell peppers. It's definitely not a fritter. I also ordered mofungo, which are supposed to be made with mashed green plantains. The dish I received had large chunks of plantains mixed in with mashed plantains. This isn't how the dish should be prepared. I only ate a small portion and left with a horrible stomach ache. To add insult to injury, that horrible dish was very overpriced at $44. This place is absolutely amazing! Great authentic Puerto Rican food, real island atmosphere. It felt like being in Puerto Rico. We got there shortly after they opened for the day, so it wasn't really crowded yet, and we got seated immediately. In addition to the sit-down restaurant side, they have a small souvenir shop near the entrance, and they sell some prepackaged foods - we bought a couple of loaves of pan sobao while we were there, and we need to make a special trip back to get more!
