Wow oh wow. Spent a night close by and walked over to have dinner at Cafe Collage. We didn't have a reservation (our bad!) but the lovely couple who own and run the restaurant graciously invited us to stay for dinner. My husband ordered the beef tenderloin, perfectly cooked and fully flavored. I ordered the spinach and ricotta ravioli, also super flavorful and deeply satisfying. The restaurant is small and is open 3 days a week, so reservations are highly recommended. The chef and the hostess were kind, approachable, and seem genuinely interested in wowing their customers like they wowed us. The customer service was all-around outstanding. I took myself out on a date to this delightful restaurant during a solo trip to the area and had a wonderful experience. The food and ambiance were outstanding. The service was friendly and hospitable. I ordered the seafood risotto, which was the best I've had. The wine list was impressive and I enjoyed a glass of Malbec. For dessert I splurged on the panna cotta which was as beautifully presented and delicious. So I am not sure what I was expecting when we picked Cafe Collage, (in Oregon House ,CA)but let me say this... the building was once a house, so it doesn't look like much! However, when you go behind the curtains you will find a fine dining hole in the wall!!! I had the lamb shank, chicken and andouille sausage couscous and it was to die for! My husband had their pepperoni pizza and it was light, cheesy and crunchy all at the same time!!! It is a little spendy but well worth every penny!!! The Belgian Dark Chocolate Mousse is divine and the cream brûlée was fantastic! We will go again!!! read more

Last evening we ordered take-out from Cafe Collage. The food was wonderful. There are a lot of choices on the menu posted on their website. My favorite is the Collage Mirage an assortment of Middle-Eastern appetizers and fresh warm pita. My husband loved the meat pie stuffed with sirloin. After swimming on the Yuba River most of the day, we headed over here to have dinner. The food was amazing! We had the Collage Mirage (app) to start which gives you a taste of the Mediterranean/Middle East to start. The eggplant dip and salad are my favorites on the plate. They have local wines however we went for an Italian Primitivo, which was nice and refreshing after the river. I chose the lamb shank, delicious! The veggies with it were cooked and seasoned to perfection! The fingerling carrots were the highlight. My boyfriend had the seafood Couscous, he loved it! Our friends had a pizza (good) and a Cesar salad with chicken (good). The evening was just about to end when the owner said he had just finished a nectarine tart, so we ordered that too! That dessert was to die for! If you are ever in the area, I would go here for dinner! read more

I came across this place accidentally, when I had a meeting up in Dobbins at 1, and this place was the only restaurant open. I'm not from around the area, so we were lucky we found this awesome restaurant. First of all, the food was top quality. I ordered their burger, and it was made perfectly well-done. It came with these giant fries, and I'm not a big fan of fries... but the salad was amazing.. I've never had such a perfectly balanced salad. I don't know what the dressing was, but it was perfect, and the apples were a nice touch. The service there was also pretty good. We requested to do this fast, because of our meeting, and they totally honored that. The food came and asked if we still wanted our check early, but we told them the meeting was canceled, so we sat around and talked until they cleared our table. The interior is also pretty nice. We went on a sunny day, and they have an area to the side that was covered but really bright and airy. The furniture and decorations make this place a very cute place. I think couples would like it. A surprisingly good restaurant in the redneckian countryside with actual hummus and babaganoush - mediterranean treats hard to come by in a sit-down atmosphere anywhere in Nevada or Yuba Counties. The one drawback has to do with temperature. We visited during the winter and were seated in the main dining area which was freezing. Several space heaters had been turned on but should have been running hours earlier. I had to keep my down jacket on throughout dinner. The smaller, warmer seating area was open yet the hostess/waitress didn't offer to seat anyone in there. Probably best to visit in summer. read more

Our party of 4 dined here for the first time tonight. We loved it, Chef Salim was very welcoming and friendly. I had the Greek Moussaka (wonderful) a spinach salad with feta cheese (the Chef's suggestion). 2 had pizzas, the Pollo-Tomato-Chicken Breast & the Siciliam-Tomato-Capers-Anchovies etc. Both the guys said they were very good. The fourth dish was the Duck confit, judged delicious. The bread and hummus they serve was outstanding. Even 2 who don't normally like hummus said it had a great flavor. I loved the well decorated restaurant and will return again soon. We knew about the restaurant because of the food column Chef Salim writes weekly in the Appeal Democrat. read more

One of our favorite hidden treasures for absolutely delicious food! Salim, the owner and chef, is such a great guy - we always feel so welcome! It's out of the way, for sure, but we always find that making the hour long drive there is so worth it! We've introduced many friends to Salim's cooking and all have been so delightedly surprised, by this gem! My husband is so enamored with the Lamb Shank that he can't be convinced to try anything new. But wow, that Lamb Shank is so very rich, tender and flavorful! - yum! I like a variety of dishes besides the lamb - the duck, moussaka, fish and others are so tasty. I have lots of food restrictions and they are always so accommodating for my special diet. I can't eat the pizza, but some other patron was eating one the other night and it looked amazing! A real jewel at Oregon House well worth seeking out. Living on a close mountain we finally tried this (mainly)Greek home style restaurant cursing ourselves for not having done this sooner! One feels welcomed (usually by the owner) immediately upon arrival. We had reservations and glad of it as the place filled shortly after we were seated on a Sunday night. What a delightful experience. We live in a large metro area of about a million and there really isn't a place like this to go to so we cook our own food. It is almost impossible to find a place that uses quality local ingredients prepared properly without having to endure haute pretentiousness. Over a few days visit we enjoyed several enteres here and only wish we could take this place and the wonderful, experienced staff home with us. The service was as stellar as the menu. We have already booked another stay in large part so we can come back to Cafe Collage. In my mind it beats the French Laundry in Yountville. Bravo. read more

I am blown away. This place is a little gem in the middle of nowhere. I love food, I love to eat out and I live in LA. This is the best meal I've had in a really long time. The owners are lovely and you can taste the love in their food!! We had the linguini with duck ragu, lobster ravioli, Cesar salad, pana cotta and chocolate mousse and I highly recommend them all!! What an oasis in the middle of nowhere! Cafe Collage is a beautiful, mellow and friendly little restaurant serving mediterranean and middle eastern fare with a twist. Good, reasonable wines and attentive service, too. The gyro salad is great and so is the mousaka... Their fish choices are quite creative,too, and the portions are large. Last time I was there, I had the prawn noodles with coconut milk and my sister had the ahi tuna with quinoa...Yum and healthy too. We started by splitting the very Greek grilled feta. Been living in the area for over 15 years and just found this little gem. My expectations were high based on the other reviews and I was not disappointed. The place is small and has that casual elegance look. I had the salmon in parchment paper with crab and the wife the Moussaka. The fish was outstanding and you can taste the real crab. However what really stood out were the sides, the potato and eggplant ragout. Perhaps I am only saying this because most side dishes are only average but these stood up to the main course. The owners have some tie to fresh fish so it is ok to order it here even though it is breaking the don't order fish if you are 100 miles from the ocean rule. For dessert had the baklava. Very good and not overly sweet. The Chef came out at least 3 times and had a quick chat which was really nice but it was not over done. So no more driving to Nevada City for special dinners we will be coming back again and again. read more

GREAT food. I had the beef filet and my husband had the braised lamb shank. My steak was perfectly cooked. I said I wanted it medium and it was just the right pink in the center. Delicious syrah. Service was friendly and attentive. I had coffee with dessert and it was European style, made with an espresso machine, delightfully strong but not overpowering with the crema layer on top. The décor could use a little work but it's homey and in keeping with it's country location. All and all a very pleasant dining experience. We will definitely be returning. Perfect dinner. Staff cared for us and took the time to serve us properly and treat us as guests. Staff was attentive to our needs and questions without ever hovering or lingering. Food quality and the care in preparation was superb. Portions are a little larger and some entrees come with unexpected sides. Plan to bring some home. Order the Collage Mirage appetizer. Order one of the Oregon House area wines. They cost a little more, but well worth it. I recommend calling or writing ahead with dietary restrictions. Not knowing what to expect on our first trip to Café Collage, we were pleasantly surprised and delighted with our dining experience. The outside entrance could be improved as one wants to continue driving by and not stop. But once inside, with a welcoming greeting, the music playing caught my ear immediately and put me at ease! We enjoyed our table for 4 in a small dining room of only about 8 tables. Too many menu items (so different from any restaurant I have dined at) to choose from was fun in itself. Everything was a delight and desserts were so creative and well thought out in presentation. We will definitely return and tell others about our excellent dining experience. We would love to go on one of their tours in the future to Tunisia. And would like to know what the upcoming events for Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year Eve will be. This place is out in the middle of nowhere. You'd never guess a place this good was in tiny Oregon House. It's one of those hole in the wall places that is a real jewel. The ambiance is great, decorated on the inside with a wonderful Middle Eastern flare. Inside it's unpretentious outer walls you'll find warm inviting spaces, cubby holes for taking a date, spaces fit to party with friends, an indoor garden like dinning area it is all there. Service is great, the food is superb and they have an excellent wine selection (plus great desserts). I've been to Cafe Collage ,a few times now and have had delicious food, no matter what I ordered. What a menu, unusual and distinct....stuffed grape leaves to roasted lamb shanks, it is all yummy. From what I understand, much of the food is locally produced, I love supporting LOCAL. This place is wonderful! We had dinner in many small towns in the Gold Country, but rarely (ever?) did we have a treat like this - what a pleasant surprise. They really take pride in their food and the staff was super friendly. We came at a time when they just got super busy, almost overwhelmed - and this is a small place. But they handled it very well and we were seated / attended / served and even chatted with in no time. Which speaks for a good team of the entire restaurant.
