My first review of 2023 and we're off to an unforgettable start! The empanadas here are to die for, it was literally love at first bite. I tried their kale and butternut one, it was extremely creamy and flavorful. The other one I tried was their mushroom one and it was just as good if not even better. I highly recommend giving this place a try, there are so many flavors to choose from and definitely something for everyone! I can't wait to go back and try something else on the menu. 5 stars for sure! read more

The filling had a good amount of the main ingredient. Flavoring was not bad on both. Chorizo filling was kinda lacking. Didn't really notice any chorizo nor egg and was mostly potato. read more

I stopped in for a coffee got an apple pie empanada and was swayed to get a dulce de leche bar while I was at it. Both were delicious. The place smells great when you walk inside. The sign painting outside is incredible. Can't wait to come back and try all the empanadas. read more

So impressed by this cute cafe that serves some great Empanadas - huge meat and vegetarian variety too! Also love that it's baked and another positive is the chimichuri sauce that comes with it is so flavorful! I honestly didn't think this place would slap based on the hours. Compared to the other Argentinian place in the Bay Area, this one wins. One can tell if its made with love if the dough is made by hand(rather than a machine) and also served with chimichurri. We came here on a Sunday afternoon. The owner was super friendly, and you could tell people like her. In a nutshell, minus 1 star because the empanadas are too expensive for what you get. We got 1 beef and 1 chicken empanada. They're delicious for sure, but a little on the small side. And at $4.99 each, too expensive. It can take 10-15 minutes to get the empanadas, probably because they're made to order. I appreciate that. In all I do like this place, and I like businesses like it. The food was very tasty. I love that the filling portions are generous. The doughs are super soft and it's well proportioned. My fiancé and I like to go to different places to taste empanadas. No shade to Javi's cooking- their dough is a bit flaky & firm. Ham & cheese, chorizo empanadas are perfect choices for breakfast here at Buenos Aires. Awesome customer service with a smile. The ambiance is in a calm area of Berkeley. The tables & chairs were clean. As a healthcare worker, I automatically have a watchful eye for cleanliness, and the surrounding is Kempt. I love this little spot. I don't know if they're open during the quarantine, but if they are doing takeout you should definitely swing by. They have some of the best baked empanadas in town. Very lovely service, and like I said it's small so don't expect much. But trust me, it's worth swinging by. UPDATE after owner's harsh response: I was simply trying to help your business during this crucial time. It appears that help is unwanted. No problem. I am all for supporting small businesses, hence why I tried to give you four stars as a good review.. I am also someone who works as a cook in a restaurant in your neighborhood. I, myself am unemployed at the moment. These are definitely trying times and we should support each other as best we can in my opinion! People are still entitled to that.. I also don't appreciate you twisting my words. Unfortunately witnessed some unacceptable practices at this cafe. First, I watched the employee steam milk, then oat milk, then milk again on the steamer wand without ever cleaning the steamer wand. You're supposed to clean that wand after each use so that 1) if folks are getting plant based milk vs. milk there's no cross. And more importantly, so that milk doesn't get crusted inside the tube of the steamer wand and blow dry chunks into someone's drink. Ordered an oat milk latte, watched the woman grind the espresso beans but she never tamped the grounds down --- she just inserted the basket into the espresso machine. Espresso grounds are required to be pressed into the basket (and for those running legit shops, at a certain amount of lbs of pressure) in order for the hot water to extract from the grounds correctly. She had also made an oat milk latte before me, and as she went to go steam my milk she stared at the carafe she just used with leftover steamed oat milk, contemplated that there was some left in there and instead of disposing of it she just added cold oat milk on top of the luke warm oat milk (as she had attended to the oven a while before making my drink, so that carafe was sitting on the counter for a time) then proceeded to steam it on the steamer wand that was crusted over. I was in such disbelief and had waited so long I had no time to address this with her. She was nice enough but you could tell this was normal practice. The name of the employee was on my receipt, Maria. All these 5 star reviews mean that folks are probably not watching what is happening back there. I suggest you do. read more

Went here to have some coffee and a snack. Coffee was good and really liked the empanada. We had the mozzarella one with that chimichurri sauce. They have a few tables outside which is nice during the pandemic if you want to catch some air and sun. Staff was really nice. Would come here again to try some other empanada flavors. read more

I came here for breakfast after visiting from out of state for a tango event. I had a mushroom empanada and a veggie one. They were both fresh and savory. I also had an espresso full of flavor that reminded me of the coffee I was used to back in Europe. The host, Diana was very warm and welcoming. They even have tango music playing in the background. Are they struggling? If they're struggling they should just update their times, because every time I've come here trying to meet with someone until 5:30 (since there aren't many cafes open until 5:30), they've told me they're shutting early). The first time, I got a few empanadas to-go and yes, the chimichurri is GREAT and the mushroom empanadas are amazing. The apple/sweet one, not so much. The second time, I called ahead and wanted to *make sure* they were open until 5:30. When I got there, they said no, it was closing early. She offered to keep it open for a while, for me, but I felt bad.. because that would be like 1.5 more hours. Then I waited outside for my friend so we could relocate and the woman walked out to tell me that the guy said 4:30, not 5:30. I'm like... okay, I'm pretty sure I said 5:30. Because I don't normally call a cafe before I go in.. but then she insisted the guy said 4:30. And I said "Cool. Okay..." But like.. why? Can't we entertain the possibility that he misheard? Or do I need to be the one to say, "I must have said 4:30"? Either way, even if it's a gorgeous cute little place, I can't even suggest that you call ahead to make sure it's open because that won't even guarantee anything.... ugh. Awesome food and awesome people! I've tried almost all the veggie empanadas and their hot chocolate (oat milk). Their empanadas are So delicious! Oh and their mini Beignets are so yummy. The owner is genuinely so sweet and hilarious. My hubby's blood sugar dropped when we were waiting for food yesterday. The owner gave us some honey and water; he walked to the car to turn the ac on and started feeling better. They ended up bringing our order to our car. Super sweet! We were invited to try Argentine empanadas on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. We get to the place & were slightly disappointed that it was only for take out as the tables on the side walk were limited. We walk up to the entrance & immediately was greeted by a very friendly woman. She patiently described the flavors, and made recommendations. Two empanadas per person would be sufficient for lunch. Beef, chicken, mushroom were most popular. Alfajores were cookies with caramel or chocolate. We ordered her recommended flavors plus Spinach & Feta & Humita. For dessert we ordered the Alfajores & Beignets. We each paired these with their hand crafted coffees. After a 15-minute, we received 2 boxes. Each empanada was individually wrapped & labeled. So excited! We then drove a few blocks to a park she suggested. Yes! She even searched for a park where we enjoyed a picnic. Talk about customer service that goes above & beyond!!! Taste? Empanada fillings were each very flavor-full. I had the Humita & Spinach with Feta. 2 pieces were very filling. It paired perfectly with a Chai Latte! I really like this spot. Very friendly staff and empanadas are made fresh daily. At some places empanadas have too much dough and not enough filling, but these basically use the least dough for the most filling. $5/each is a good deal IMO. The spinach and feta is 5/5 and I'm kind of addicted. I've also tried the beef and chicken (good), the caprese (good but lots of basil makes it a flavor mismatch with the chimchurri), and the chorizo (fine). Coffee drinks are good. I'll update if/when I try the sweets. Overall, a great neighborhood spot and don't sleep on the spinach and feta! read more

Delicious! I had the chicken and beef empanadas and both were amazing!! The service is fast and the only thing you have to wait for is them reheating them. They heat them for 6 mins but I recommend doing it for 3 mins if you don't like your food scorching hot if you're in Berkeley and want a quick but tasty meal go here! read more

This cafe used to be Roxie Delicatessen. I walked by with my dog on the way to the Ashby flea market and noticed the food and water bowls and a dog inside. I thought I must have never come by Roxie when it was open because I didn't know they were dog-friendly, but then I saw that it was a different restaurant now! The food is Argentinean style, with goodies like empanadas and alfajores. I picked the caprese empanada for $4.99 and a bottled cherry limeade. The empanada probably isn't the best deal on the menu, because they come from a shop in San Francisco and cost a lot for the owner to buy, too. She makes her own, too, including beef and chicken that she is pricing for about a dollar less, but they were popular during the week and had sold out by Saturday afternoon. The caprese empanada still tasted fresh and had a beautiful flaky crust. The owner is so kind! If you are into having conversations with new people, she is really easy going and will sit and talk with you like a friend you haven't seen in a while. She brought out a sample of the chocolate alfajor for me to try and it was delicious! She also checked the temperature of the water bowl and replaced it for my dog. If you are looking for somewhere to stop for some great Argentinean pastries, conversation, and a place where your dog is welcome, this is it. read more

Food: spinach and feta empanada - my friend really liked it (4/5). Ham&cheese empanada - 3/5. The spicy sauce (almost like a chimichurri) was delicious but oily. Highlight of our meal was the chocolate croissant. Hot, flaky, and the chocolate was slightly bitter and spiced which balanced the croissant. I would come back to try more of their baked goods. I feel like the empanada is smaller than I'd expect considering the price but I'd love to try more things. read more
