I love this place with all my heart. The coffee is the best and I can get work done with my laptop. It's expensive, yes, welcome New York. 3 Cons though... 1. I'm in my indie coffee phase so of course as I continue to travel far and wide, the first thing I do is to check out as many local indie cafes as I can. This place is a cafe in the middle of a residential neighborhood. I'm not so sure they can afford to piss off their customers. I requested an iced cappuccino. They said they don't do it and they could make me an iced latte. I had already made myself one earlier in the day and didn't terribly want another, but if they don't do foam on iced drinks then I wasn't going to push it. So I agreed. And then they asked me why I wanted an iced cappuccino in the first place. I like foam. The end. I was fine with this interaction. I sat down to read with my latte. A gentleman walked in a few minutes later and I'm not sure what he ordered, but the two baristas began handing him Cafe Grumpy paraphernalia and telling him to spread the love. My experience with these two women was a lot more difficult that this guys experience with them. Sadly, I nor my friends in the neighborhood, who warned me not to go in there, cannot support a local place that is hugely inconsistent in their customer service. I love the Cafe Grumpy chain, but this location is my least favorite because of the rude and snobby employees behind the counter. Which is unfortunate since I live 2 blocks away. Today was different, 7/29/18 at around 4:50 PM-ish the two employees behind the counter were the best. I will now return more often hoping the previous people have been replaced. I'm going to qualify this review by saying that I've only been to Grumpy one time. But, the one time I went, I was rather annoyed by the lack of breakfast item choices. When I go to a coffeeshop in the morning, I want coffee and a bagel, dammit! The morning I went, it was a Sunday, which is a popular time to head to the coffeeshop for breakfast. Their food choices were very limited - some croissants, biscotti, and a bunch of vegan sandwiches that I happen to like, but not for breakfast. Having ranted about the food, I do have to say that Grumpy has excellent coffee and a nice atmosphere. The space is bright and clean, on a quiet block in Greenpoint that customers trek to for the coffee. I don't know if Grumpy has expanded their munchables yet, but when they do, I will definitely go back. Until then, I'll stick to places where I can get something more substantial than a croissant and more breakfast-y than a BLT sandwich with fake bacon. read more

Leave it up to Yelp to allow more traffic to find itself at an outpost of a Brooklyn roastery such as Cafe Grumpy--see the Chelsea location, which doubles this mainstay in amount of reviews! The main praise I have to make for Cafe Grumpy is that they are truly offering some quality single origins. At the main "craft roasters" in America, you will find the typical Ethiopians (not people, mind you) such as Yirgacheffe and Sidima. Fortunately Grumpy cranks out some well-sourced Colombia. This specific location offers up ample seating, which is certainly not a plausible feature in the city. They are shipping out their quality beans all across the board, though! I found a bag of their Colombia a mere half day old, roasted and ready to go, in the city. They crank out amazing pourover in the cone, sans filter. I prefer this, as the oiliness character remains present. I highly urge you to make Cafe Grumpy a must-visit if you are around the hiphood in Green Point. If you are in that area, I am pretty much going to assume you are hipster enough, already. read more

Cute little coffee house in Greenpoint. Seemed a little out of place only 2 blocks away from a very Polish neighborhood. The vibe was low-key hipster, so it was tolerable and even enjoyable. I had an [homemade?] oatmeal/coconut cookie with my cappuccino, whose foam was artfully swirled. As an added bonus I was able to pick up 2 wifi networks on my pda-- though I'm not sure if they were providing the wifi or if it was just due to the cafe's residential location. I drove by a sign on a building in the rain in January and the sign had the best name of cafe ever. It was a place for me, that suited my peculiarities and my nuances. A place where I could feel free to imbibe undoubtably unheathy amount of coffee in my quest for the numerous phrases and intentionally run-on sentences which I need as I attempt to craft the vagaries and chaotics of language into meaning. It took me 3 months of circling, like a vulture, listening and sniffing and waiting, before I found that sign again. And you know what, it was worth it. So much space, such friendly servers, so many choices and treats, and all of it tucked nicely away in Greenpoint. It's a good place. I had to update and drop a star because they no longer have the big library-esque tables that made the entire back-room a destination, a haven, and a heaven for me. This place kept me going on many a long day after a long night, if you know what I mean. The staff is very friendly, even (especially?) if you're a bit odd looking and clearly hungover. The coffee is wonderful. A bit strong, so if you're not into that, make sure you get an espresso based beverage (which are pretty much always the same strength: 1 shot =1 shot = 1 shot, approximately) or add extra milk. Grumpy has been my favorite coffee in the city since I first moved to Brooklyn. Every once in a while I will go for a flat white, but in general I stick to their pour-over drip coffee, because it's just on another level of flavor. It puts other coffee to shame. I eventually made a habit of buying their beans to bring home, but nothing really beats having it made fresh by the experts. The Greenpoint location is very large, while still feeling cozy and intimate, and I have spent many cold afternoons there with my laptop or a good book, or in the company of a friend. But really, the main draw here is the coffee. I absolutely prefer the pour-over in Greenpoint to the Clover machine brew at Grumpy in Chelsea, even though that is also wonderful. I have been to the Park Slope location and know they also do pour-over, but I can't speak as to other newer Grumpy locations. I go to Greenpoint because it's convenient and also because it's the location where I first fell in love with Cafe Grumpy coffee. It is so very much worth the price that you pay for it. read more

This is probably the largest location next to Chelsea (although it is newer I believe) and also the hardest to get to. When I was informed days earlier of the Scavenger Hunt by the Park Slope staffers; I already had plans to visit my friend in Greenpoint so it seemed with that being the most far flung locale that I could dig in and get to the other 5 locations after this. This location does not have the ban on laptops that the others do and understandably it is bigger. I have had 7 servings of the Blueberry Hibiscus Iced Tea on this journey and can report that the taste varied significantly location to location. What will you find out if you attempt the challenge? tip: If you reside in Greenpoint the park slope location might have you wondering if you can do this-take the G train to 9th st or 15th street in Park Slope and this location is between the two-you can hang in Prospect Park on your way back. read more

I've lived in Greenpoint for a few years, and Grumpy has been always been my go-to spot when I need a fantastic, freshly brewed cup of coffee. Their pour-over selection changes often, as does the guest espresso, and the employees are always eager to discuss their offerings, make suggestions, and put their time into making a truly delicious cup of coffee. Even though I'm not there everyday, I feel as if the staff always greets me warmly and contributes the the neighborhood feel that makes me love living in a small community in Brooklyn. I see these reviews about the employees being pretentious and must conclude that other yelpers are reviewing the shop's portrayal on Girls rather than an actual experience in the shop, or perhaps are overly influenced by the puckered, angry 'Grumpy' face on the mugs. read more

Far and away the best cappuccino in the area. It has, almost, a little saltiness to it. I don't intend for that to be some play on words, the "salty" as some sort of colloquial synonym for "grumpy." And, I can't back this up with quantitative data, but I'm going to suggest that their iced coffee has a bit more caffeine in it than some other joints. I tend to get tense an hour after finishing a cup. This does however push me towards a speedy bike ride home. Prices here are slightly higher than most of the other nearby coffee shops, but I think that's intended to keep out the undesirables. This is a place for connoisseurship, for mighty and delicate palates to savor the sweet brews of rare beans. Good drip coffee - but not quite hot enough. I like it to BURN, so I can meander over it for a good hour before it turns cold. Wifi is a bit finicky - today there were a lot of laptop people so perhaps it was overloaded. I couldn't get on (but I did get OFF hehehehe thats what she said). Great music - I bring headphones and then never use them. Perfect volume, perfect work-tunes. Nice and sunny. Plenty of tables. Nice baristas. Great for hanging and great for getting work done. Top notch. As a member of the mobile workforce I've been searching for a good coffee shop for a while: semi-quiet, ample seating, chill atmosphere, and of course great coffee. Cafe Grumpy has all of the above, and beyond. Bonus: the front windows let in a lot of sunlight in the morning--a good way to start the day! In the never ending quest for the greatest latte in the world, it is only natural that I check out the original Cafe Grumpy. The decor is much more relaxed and a bit edgier than the Manhattan location. Lots of tables and lots of space to chill and do whatever you want to do. But on to the coffee. Definitely nice. Silky smooth on the way down, and it didn't last long at all. Not as hearty on the espresso side as others I have had, but still very well made. It's a shame this place so far away from where I live. So the guy working there was actually grumpy, and perhaps a little sickly, so he tried to close up early, but I walked a long bloody way from the subway, so I wasn't budging till he begged on his knees. Fortunately I didn't have to put him to that test because he closed on time (8pm). The wireless internet worked a-okay and the place is huge with lots of seating. There was even an outlet to plug my laptop into. But I shan't be back until summer because that's too long a walk through boring Greenpoint just for a grumpy cup of tea/coffee (no offense Greenpointers... love the Polish vibe you got going! Café Grumpy is the closest coffee shop to my work place. There's no competition here on Diamond. It's good but a bit expensive. The staff is very Grumpy although another shot of espresso might make them even grumpier. Lots of space to sit and do work but not enough space to fit all customers. Early bird def gets the worm? WHAT THEY DO WELL: The coffee is very good. WHAT THEY SHOULD DO DIFFERENTLY (in my opinion): 1) Customer Service: As much as it pains me to say it, the service is very consistent with the cafe's name: only a small portion of the staff is friendly and feels like they value their customers. To be sure, I can't read people's minds, so many I have it all wrong, but it seems that much of their staff doesn't want to be there, and sometimes seem to act like they're doing me a favor by preparing coffee or filling my order. I'm not someone who requires any kind of special treatment, but sometimes I'm genuinely hesitant to order from them because they seem like they don't want to be approached. (Note: not all of their baristas are like this, but ~70% of the time, this feels like the case.) 2) Facilities Upkeep: There is one restroom, which is in all-around poor condition. The door lock doesn't work very well. There is graffiti. The toilet doesn't flush properly; the sink doesn't dispense normal-temperature water--rather, it's often scalding hot, even when just the "cold" water is turned on. The furniture in the cafe is old and in rough shape (people have carved their names into the wooden community table) and the individual, circular wooden tables are warped. The interior is dark, particularly in the back, where there aren't many windows. I really want this place to be great, and I'm rooting for them, but I get the sense that all of the effort is put into making great coffee (which they succeed at), but not into creating a pleasant atmosphere for their customers. read more

When I stopped in here, the place was PACKED. The worst part, though, was their drink selection - or lack there of. I ended up ordering a cup of OK-but-nothing-special hot tea purely because I would've felt like a dope leaving empty-handed after asking the barista to name every type of drink they had available (which didn't take too long). Probably the best place in the neighborhood to sit and get some work done for a few hours. There's tons of space, a good amount of outlets to charge, and the people are super nice. And the chairs aren't uncomfortable. A lot of the coffeeshops in this area are super small, and though they have good coffee, you definitely can't sit down and get some stuff done. The chairs at other places like ovenly on Greenpoint ave and West St. are super uncomfortable... plus they don't have wifi -_- Today I ordered one chocolate chip cookie but they gave me a second cookie for free, just for kicks. They have tons of great pastry and drink choices. And they have tons of adorable merchandise. I have a grumpy shirt and mug at home :) read more

Finally made it out to the Greenpoint outpost... I never tire of Ritual roasted coffee, even when I'm on the East Coast! I really enjoyed this cafe, the music is cool and mellow, the place is really really spacious. Coffee is superb of course, perfect shot of espresso everytime. First off: This is my espresso roast of choice, period, no exceptions. I use their beans at home and nab a cortado here when I'm in the neighborhood. Tons of room, although during the workday it's eerily quiet save the nonstop keyboard clicking from dozens of laptop zombies. That said, if you're not afraid to be the only people in the room talking, it's a great place to meet up for a business meeting or a quick hello. Summary from my first time here: Pros- A non-pretentious cafe, with space to breathe, chill atmosphere, friendly customers and baristas, and really great coffee. I love it! Cons- No fresh food for lunch, and they close early. My americano was delicious. The ceramic cup was a little small, but the drink was so good it really made up for it. The carrot mango muffin I had was amazing- very fresh, soft and delicious as well. The atmosphere seems just right. The music (which can really distract me in most cafes) was nice; chill yet tasteful and it set a nice mood. It's also huge place with plenty of seating and I didn't have a problem finding a spot with an outlet for my laptop. Another plus, it basically seems hipster free- just nice people reading the paper, writing, some laptops. It seems like not so much to ask for but it's a rare combination around these parts. The coffee isn't bad, but it also doesn't stand out. I enjoy the space - it's cute and in a more residential location. My boyfriend tried to order an iced espresso, but the barista said, "I can't do that, it will turn the coffee rancid." This is really strange...many other coffee places serve iced espresso and the "turning rancid" part makes absolutely no sense. Best coffee in the city. It feels like a standard New England college town coffee shop, and I mean that in the best possible way. Service isn't what I'd call effusively upbeat but the barista usually starts pouring my regular order when she sees me walking in the door, and to me that's pretty great. Beans are hilariously expensive for 12 oz but they're also fantastic so I buy them anyway. If I had time to loiter in coffee shops during the day, this one would be my choice. Spacious and calm. The $3.50 plain donut is absurd but I guess someone must be buying them!
