I was in Greenpoint for a gig and met my friend at Cafe Grumpy before heading over to my gig. I like the overall atmosphere of this coffee shop. There were a lot of people on their laptops working and it seemed like a chill type of coffee shop. The barista was pleasant--I got regular coffee (added almond milk and sugar) and my friend got an almond milk cappuccino. I like that they offer almond and soy milk here. The coffee is okay--it's not my favorite, but it did the job. Overall, I really like the environment of this coffee shop and I would come back if i'm in the neighborhood. This is the closest cafe to my workplace (they are conveniently wedged right between a residential area and a factory/warehousing area where my office is) but I only come here when I'm in a hurry. Main reason is the same reason I had to take off two stars in this review. 1 star: Their pricing is exorbitant and they way overcharge for the quality of the pastries and coffee they serve. To be fair, their pastries are GOOD... but not $5 for a chocolate chip cookie good; the coffee is kinda meh but it's neither watered-down nor strong and they have a refill policy, which is nice. 2nd star: Their customer service is passable but can be hit or miss. The waiting in line is also a killer sometimes and I'm usually astounded at how long it can take to get served. So that's my feedback on this cafe. It's average. Not terrible but not great either. If they could make their process a little more efficient and maybe reduce their prices just a LITTLE I would probably come here a lot more often. read more

This place was comfortable and spacious, but I wasn't too impressed with anything else. The hot chocolate I got and the cappuccino my boyfriend got were nothing special. They tasted just about the same as at every other decent cafe or even a chain coffee place. We also got a biscotti to share, which could have been the saving grace of the place, but it seemed a old and little stale. What I really disliked about our visit was the attitude of the man at the counter. He was not friendly or nice at all when I was ordering for us or when I came back to try to order a second time to go before leaving. We did walk in at about an hour and a half before closing time, so giving him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he had just had a long and tiring day. Regardless, it didn't leave a good impression on me. They do have wifi which would come in handy if I had gone alone, but since I was with someone, neither of us bothered to try signing in to see if it even works, so I can't speak to that. All in all, I didn't find anything spectacular that would make me interested in coming back, especially when there are many other cafés and coffee shops around the area I have yet to explore. read more

12 dollar cup of coffee. Do you dare? When asked about the price, the seemingly-hipster-but-trying-not-to-be barista girl gave us a diatribe of what the coffee represents. Her tone suggested she's repeated this thousands of times, similar to a child reciting a poem in front of his or her second grade class. This is what I heard. An African clawless Otter eats the special coffee cherries and then poops it out. Because of the black market, coffee farmers want to get to the turds before all the poachers do. Poachers don't only hunt elephants and giraffes, but otter doodoo as well. So once the farmers get a hold of the doodies, they fry it up in a pan and the beans just magically pop out, like popcorn but grosser. Now that the process is over, shipping has to happen. This is impossible because of the Last King of Scotland. Not the movie, but the actual last king. He says, "No! You cannot sheep this!" And the farmers are saying, "Oh, sillyface. You know you want to." So then they do. Ship it out, I mean. That's why it costs 12 dollars. Because of otter poop and the Last King of Scotland. Not the movie. In my continuing mission to boldly go to every Cafe Grumpy in the city, I had my helmsman lay in a course for Diamond and Meserole, through the McGuinness nebula. Greenpoint. Warp 9, engage. "Captain, none of the controls are responding." "It's the G train ensign. It sucks." Nerd moment aside, I'm firmly convinced that Grumpy is among the best coffee in the city, if not the best. But only the Greenpoint location pays more than lip service to comfort or space, the others being basically coffee stalls. This Grumpy is bright, low key, and deceptively large with impressive amenities like seats and public bathrooms. The tradeoff for all this is a not inconsiderable walk from the justly maligned G train, across crusty and fugly McGuinness boulevard. No joke, I passed a guy on my way who was listening to music from a tiny netbook tucked into the crotch of his pants. Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Williamsburg anymore. It's the new boombox on the shoulder (seriously, someone buy this guy an iPod, think of the [his future] children). But once you get there, the neighborhood gets quietly busy and beautiful. This Grumpy gets love from a wide range of mid twenties to thirties hipsters, freelancers, and locals. Inside you'll find communal and private tables, free wi-fi, outlets, reasonably friendly baristas, and that coffee. I had a pour over cup of the Honduras, which is ridiculous at 3.75, but less ridiculous than the Rwandan, which at 6 dollars better paint your house too. But the flavor profile said "peach" and I tasted peach, with flavors so strong I start to think maybe these baristas aren't full of it and maybe I don't have the taste buds of a clam. Suitably caffeinated, and having taken enough advantage of their hospitality, I headed back. Ensign, take us out. read more

The quality of the coffee tea, and espresso drinks here is very good. I also like the big table (not that there's anything wrong with the little tables) and how they rotate the local art occasionally. The wi-fi is FREE! And if you plan on coming back, get the punch card to start earning you way towards a free drink. But minus two stars for the baristas. I found them to be unfriendly and too hipstery (yes, I know, we are in a hipster part of town here, but I know some very friendly hipsters, so not all of them are too cool for coffee/school). They have a nice loose tea selection, and I asked them to describe one of the teas to me, and the girl made a face like I was asking her what 2+2 equaled. Really? I'm supposed to know everything you do about tea? You who work with it everyday, and me who works elsewhere? Just because your place is named Grumpy doesn't mean you have to act that way. And then when I finished the tea, which came in a ceramic pot, I knew there were enough good bits left in the tea for another brew. I asked for some more hot water, but they would not give it to me! OK, can I buy some? Yes, it costs the same amount as a whole new order. I should have expected that from Ms. Grumpy herself. It's not destination: coffee, but if you are in the area, your taste buds will thank you for stopping here. Just don't expect too much from the staff. I've been here twice, both times being extremely crowded. First time, I had their room temperature hot chocolate. It gave me explosive diarrhea. Second time, I had a watery coffee and their chunky chip cookie which was made up of 90% chocolate and 10% cookie holding it together. Wifi is extremely slow. Why it took me so long to find my way to the Grump is beyond me! A short walk away from my apartment, the cafe is a way welcome addition to the neighborhood. Very light and open, the cafe sports an interesting orange color theme and has about 10 small tables. Now that I'm working from home, I hope to find a number of comfortable places to work, and this is on the top of my short list. The proprietors, who frequently hang out at the big corner table, seem friendly enough. The wifi is a little slow, but one can't complain about what's free. And their coffee -- $1.25 a mug -- is great. They even have a frequent buyer card. I'll be back -- early and often. read more

Would give negative stars to the large barista if I could! Terrible customer service. Rude, snobby baristas who aren't interested in customer service at all. This is my second very negative experience there (I've been 4 times!). Was buying a drink for a well-known director (we were shooting down the street), and the barista flat out refused "I'm not going to do that" to make a triple expression to go. I patiently explained it wasn't my drink, and the director is extremely selective, so I asked if she would make the drink to stay, charge me for another coffee to go, and just let me pour the expression into the to-go cup. She again refused (the 2nd refusal). I was floored. She then proceeded to attempt to berate me about the name of the drink, instead of working with me to get what I needed. The other instance, I had called to ask a simple question, I was again spoken to rudely, and then hung up on, in the middle of explaining me question. I will not be going back. Nor will I be sending any of my crew there, and will be sure to mention my negative experience if the opportunity arises. You really disappointed me an lived up to your Grumpy name. read more

Great coffee! Strong!~~ I've realized that if i get a morning coffee there i get jiltery all day b/c i am not really a coffee person. But definitely need some to wake up. I have to say that the quality of coffee there is far above average than most of coffee houses I've been. The flavor is definitely more roasty and darker. Coffee they have are from Seattle. I have to say that ones from seattle are more moist and strongly flavored usually. I got some bags there It seems a bit pricey like $12-14 per lbs at first (other places, i get $7-8 per lbs)but, it lasted pretty well for a long time without losing the flavor. Most ones, even from some coffee stores/houses usually dry out and you need to double the amount time goes by. Also I bought some chocolate Rooibos there which I'd really enjoyed for sometime. Grumpy is quite spacious and cute, and holds some art exibitions in the back gallery and in front, plenty of place to hang out for your reading, work with your laptop, playing board games that they have or sit outside in the side benches. Friendly and cute baristas in my experience and time to time, they have live music. read more

Having been obsessed with the HBO show Girls, I (like a loser) purchased a book of the Girls' Guide to New York City and found myself at Cafe Grumpy of Greenpoint with my mother. I LOVED the ambiance of this adorable place! Hipsters and work-a-holics typing away on their Macs feverishly pounding down tiny cups of coffee. Cafe Grumpy has a rustic, almost vintage meets modern, artsy feel to it. There are plenty of interesting pieces of art hanging around. Best way I can describe this place is DARLING and cozy. After I got over the initial geeky shock that I was standing in the same place as Hannah and Ray *gasp* we proceeded to order. Quite honestly, I do not spend much time in coffee cafes, and I am used to the Starbucks scene. The baked treats all looked absolutely adorable and amazing. I was kind of confused about the coffee on the menu and asked the person working the counter for his suggestion and to explain some of the coffees. "I really dont know what to tell you, we don't have the caramel and hazelnut frilly things you're probably looking for, we serve coffee." WOW Cafe Grumpy really lives up to its name, huh? I understand you live in Brooklyn, and near Williamsburg, so inherently your "thing" is to act like you're too cool to care, but this is your JOB. Cafe Grumpy is the reason I drink so much coffee these days! I work right across the street and get my Grumpy fix usually once or twice a day. The regular coffee and the Americano are my favorite. Until I started working here I had coffee once in a blue moon - once a week at most, but usually 1-2 times a month, just as a special treat. Look what you've done to me now, Grumpy! It's a good thing a small coffee is just $1.50 or I'd truly be in the poor house. I've become so obsessed with Grumpy's coffee that nothing else can really compare for me. So when the sad day comes when I no longer work right across the street, I'm totally buying their bags of coffee to brew at home so I can get my fix. read more

Cafe Grumpy is HANDS DOWN, the greatest coffee shop in New York. I fully plan on searching for, and visiting as many coffee shops as humany possible while I live in NYC, but this place has a place in my heart. From the moment my sister brought me there for the first time, I've been a Believer. These people really know their coffee. Moreover, they're not snobs about it - although they've caught me off guard a couple times (we won't hold that against them). Their coffee is delicious! Everything of theirs that I've tried has been impressive. I LOVE their cappucino's. I would get one EVERY TIME I went there during the cooler months. Then after my first cap, i'd move on to regular coffee for the rest of my stay. In the summer months I prefer their iced coffees. Cafe Grumpy uses this special "one cup" style machine for specialty (non-espresso) coffees, by the name of "Clover". It truly makes a delicious cup of coffee, and can be quite entertaining to watch. These cups are priced according to the type of bean you choose. This selection is always changing, but it seems like they might try to retain a few popular choices. This specialty "Clover" cup is a tad expensive, but it's definitely worth trying. Two of my siblings get this everytime. Rumor has it that Starbucks bought out the manufacturer, but for the time being Grumpy has the machines at both locations. Speaking of "both locations" -- I forgot to mention that they have TWO locations in NYC, and are possibly opening more soon. The other spot is in Chelsea, and is different enough to warrant a second review by me. Their barristas are incredibly talented, and clearly love what they do. Their appreciation for coffee, and the skills they display while preparing coffee drinks is second to none. Quite a few of them make delicate, complex decorations with milk in their espresso drinks. I've seen a series of hearts, leaves, etc. They're quite impressive. Grumpy has a nice website as well -- at http://www.cafegrumpy.com - where you'll find their story, as well as information about both locations, AND a link to their Blog. That's right - you can read all about their love of coffee, and the crazy things they do. Training parties are hosted by employees, where they perfect their tricks of the trade. It was actually a very enjoyable read. The Greenpoint location is considerably larger than the Chelsea joint. They both have free WiFi, but Greenpoint's size accomodates more people, and allows you the luxury of camping out for a while. This likely works in their favor, unlike many other coffee shops - because when I'm there for the afternoon (or sometimes the better part of the day) I've been known to buy 5-10 drinks, as well as food. I don't care if you already have a favorite coffee shop. If you haven't tried Cafe Grumpy, then you really don't know what you're missing. It was also really good that they take credit cards because after my exploration I was left cashless (and immensely caffeinated.) I had a blueberry mango bran muffin that was really good. Truly the best soy latte in town. I wasn't too picky before I found this place and I wouldn't have found it if a friend hadn't recommended it. A little out of the way for me, but it reminds me of what I love about Greenpoint--you never know what you'll find on the most unassuming street. When I lived in Greenpoint and was freelancing, Café Grumpy was like my second home. If I don't leave my house, I'll spend like six hours putting on drag queen make-up or dancing around to Moondog or watching those SyFy original movies with titles like "Haunted Prison"- so a good coffee shop is pretty essential to my work productivity. Café Grumpy definitely filled the bill. It's basically populated by people just like me- practically everyone in there would come with laptop and books handy, and I would see the same people pretty much day in, day out. The coffee is really quite good. I didn't avail myself of all the varieties all the time, because I'm not a coffee snob, I just want to be alert. But I've definitely had enough bitter Starbucks coffee to know that the coffee at Grumpy is not hyped- it is definitely full-flavored and really tasty.To eat I'd usually get myself a pastry like a scone (which were really, really good, not dry at all) or a couple of hard-boiled eggs. They do have a whole fridge full of vegan sandwiches and noodles and stuff, but you know how packaged vegan food tends to be. I hope one day they make their own sandwiches. Generally the vibe in there was pretty good. They play very good music. Mostly people were working, but they were kind enough to keep an eye on your stuff when you went to the bathroom and such; one time this guy spent an inordinate amount of time helping me with a computer issue I was having, which was super-nice. The staff was variable, but there were a few regular employees who truly were grumpy, at least to the customers. They'd be nice to each other, screaming in these obnoxious hipster voices about whatever hipsters talk about, but then if you went up to ask for another spoon or something, they'd look at you like you just ruined everything. I'd always thought about complaining to a manager, but I think at one point I figured out who the manager was and she was totally doing it too, so another dream deferred. But if you sit in the back, you can mostly avoid them. In general, good assessment. Any place that stops me from procrastinating gets a gold star from me. read more

My boyfriend is practically incompetent in the kitchen but he makes up for it almost entirely with his ability to make an amazingly good cup of coffee. He is, hands down, the biggest coffee snob I have ever known. So, when we walked over to Cafe Grumpy on a beautiful Saturday morning and he started geeking out with the barista about the new Bunn Trifecta machine and the differences between it and the Clover (at the Chelsea location), I thought nothing of it. I squinted at the board for the available types of coffee and settled on one from Guatemala. The name escapes me but it was described with some of my favorite adjectives... "chocolate" being one of them. I sat down at a table and scanned the room as I nonchalantly took a sip. HOLY. DELICIOUS. CUP. OF. COFFEE. BATMAN. Boyfriend sat down, giddy from his coffee chat, and split open the pumpkin cream cheese muffin between us. My eyes were still rolling into the back of my head from my coffee but he hardly noticed. He began raving about the coffee and the muffin - this is not the junk you see festering in Starbucks and the likes. It's spacious and clean. Relatively quiet. The foam is like whipped egg whites before being folded into a cake and the body of the milk ideally matches the exceptional flavor of the coffee. It is light and strong. This place is a cafe in the middle of a residential neighborhood. I'm not so sure they can afford to piss off their customers. I requested an iced cappuccino. They said they don't do it and they could make me an iced latte. I had already made myself one earlier in the day and didn't terribly want another, but if they don't do foam on iced drinks then I wasn't going to push it. So I agreed. And then they asked me why I wanted an iced cappuccino in the first place. I like foam. The end. I was fine with this interaction. I sat down to read with my latte. A gentleman walked in a few minutes later and I'm not sure what he ordered, but the two baristas began handing him Cafe Grumpy paraphernalia and telling him to spread the love. My experience with these two women was a lot more difficult that this guys experience with them. Sadly, I nor my friends in the neighborhood, who warned me not to go in there, cannot support a local place that is hugely inconsistent in their customer service. Honestly I wish the place was grumpy, the workers there are drunk I think. maybe not, maybe they are just on some kind of drugs, I got it, Caffeine! its an OK place, the frowning face logo is poop, and the workers are goofy, but the coffee is good. read more
