This is place falls in the category of hole-in-the-wall restaurants. They literally have four tables of seating in the entire place. Some people would say that makes it more intimate. I personally feel a little weird having the owners within arms reach of every customer..... The parking lot is a bit small, it's located in a strip center with about four other businesses and there is only one row of parking for everyone. The few times I've visited, there's been a few openings, so I guess I was lucky. The list of food items is pretty limited, but the prices are very reasonable. I stuck with the traditional bowl of Pho with sliced beef and noodles in beef broth. I'd say the noodles were average. I'm just glad there's a place near my office for me to grab a fresh bowl of Pho! Asian noodles will always have a soft spot in my heart.... mostly because I'm Chinese and grew up with it as my comfort food. read more

I got really excited to see a Vietnamese restaurant near my work. Finally! I can have my Bún Tht Nng Ch Giò (Pork and egg roll bun) and I don't have to drive all the way to Nicollet Ave to get it. So the first time I go in I order Bún Tht Nng Ch Giò (which was on the menu) and they tell me they are out of pork. So I ordered the Bún Gà Nng ( and ask for it with an egg roll. Turns out the egg roll was extra even though they did not have what I had asked for. I came in a second time and asked for Bún Tht Nng Ch Giò (still on the menu) "sorry no pork". Ordered the Bún Gà Nng again with the up-sell egg roll (as others have stated is tasty and huge). Same thing happens the third time I try to order. Keep in mind that I have lunch between 11 and 12 so they should not be out of pork yet unless they only order half a pound once a week. At this point I am fairly frustrated and stop going. I figured I would try again and both dishes are no longer on the menu so I left. I really had a craving for some Bún today so I figured I would try one more time. Still gone from the menu. I asked why it went away and I was told that no one ordered it. Of course no one ordered it! How can you order a dish you never have!?!? Then they tell me the pork takes too long to cook. Out of the dozens of Vietnamese cafes I have been to this is the only one that has that issue. This is really sad because the Bún Gà Nng they DID have was quite good and I probably would have gotten it again. At this rate I will probably not return as it is clear by their two entree Chinese-American lunch special and their dwindling Vietnamese menu that this is another of many "Vietnamese" restaurants out there. Besides my gripe, the Chicken Bun and the egg roll (see the image I posted for this restaurant) was good while they had it. It is a small space so I would plan to take out if you go. read more

Food was great but with a HUGE cleanliness issue. I have been here twice now and BOTH times the man took my money (bare handed) and have me a receipt.. Walked into the kitchen and immediately stuck his hand in the bamboo shoots, onion, basil, etc to pack up my pho. This is absolutely disgusting and unsanitary. Don't go looking for an exhaustive authentic viet menu, but what there is is excellent in a homestyle made for you two seconds ago way. I'm very picky about greasy Chinese food (when is it ever even worth it in MN?) , so I'm not even gonna go there here. I got my grease on with the vietnamese egg rolls - they're pretty freakin' good, not the best ever, but far better than I expected. Finally I am in the area at the right time of day to check out Cadao Express. Yes, the place is small, maybe seating less than 20. Yes, the parking lot is flat out dangerous, especially if you wind up parked next to a behemouth truck or SUV and have to back out blind. Yes, the food is good. I got an order of egg rolls and a rice noodle salad (bun) to go. Others have commented that the egg rolls are huge but they are not the biggest in town. The biggest I have seen have been at Wok in the Park and its seen better days neighbor Thanh Do. The rolls were good though with plenty of ground pork and seasoning that actually gave them a nice flavor on their own. The dipping sauce was the traditional variation on seasoned fish sauce with some pepper flakes. The salad seemed a bit short on the veggie components but the shrimp and onions had been caramelized on a flat top, some of the onions were a bit too caramelized for my taste but the shrimp were perfect. They had even gotten a slight smoky taste from their time on the grill with the onions. Service was quick and friendly and I would definitely return again if I am in the area at meal time. read more

This is a little hole in the wall that is part of a small strip mall in Richfield on Penn Ave across from bellies to babies maternity clothing store. They have about 3 tables and one high chair available so if you go with more than one child that needs a high chair, you'll be out of luck. I've only eaten in twice. We've mostly done take out. I haven't tried any of their Chinese dishes except for the cream cheese wontons. I mostly order their Vietnamese noodles soup: bun mam, bun bo hue, bun mang vit, bun rieu, or pho. They only serve pho after 6:30pm. Out of their specialty noodles soups, my favorites are the spicy beef noodles soup and bamboo shoots with duck noodles soup. I like it that they'll add extra bamboo shoots upon request. They cater but not on Sundays since they are closed. The cream cheese wontons is average here. It's hard to rate since we ordered it to go and by the time we got home it was not hot anymore. I like my cream cheese wontons to be a little crispy but not crunchy like it's been in the fryer too long. Their bun bo hue is in the top five of my list to order from when I'm craving it. The bun rieu is pretty good. It's balance of crabmeat flavor and tomatoes paste. Overall, this place is great whenever you're craving Vietnamese soups. read more

Pho had chunks o'meat in it, not your typical thin sliced rare beef. Broth was average. Vegetable plate had one sliced jalapeño on it. Egg roll was good but almost too big. "Dining room" (if you can actually call it that) is about 12 x 12 and has 4 stainless steel tables with metal stools. Very uncomfortable height and size for your average sized Minnesotan I think. If you are on the tall or hefty side its going to be uncomfortable. Overall its not bad, its just not good enough to go back or recommend to anybody. Drive 7 minutes north and go to Quangs or Pho 79 instead. read more

Found this place because I was looking for pho near friend's house. I like it! We got there about 30 minutes before it closed, so we were the only ones there. This place is very small...only about three or four tables. The owners were sooo nice! I ordered pho and my friend got a vermicelli salad. We both really liked our meals. My pho was really yummy. I have just moved to the area and walked by Cadao Express during off hours. I was excited to see a pho place so close to my house. I was then encouraged by the recommendation of my neighbor. This place has all the appeal that a mom and pop hole in the wall should have. A cramped space with a few stainless steal tables and a decade old tv with vietnamese advertisements playing. The faded menu up on the wall with stock photos and mismatched prices. I finally got to try it last night and unfortunately, I was disappointed. I ordered the sliced beef and meatballs pho and my wife ordered a tofu pho (not on the menu but available upon request). We also got egg rolls and the vegetable delight. The order came with the typical accoutrements; sprouts, noodles, basil leaves and jalapenos (only one slice). The noodles were cooked well but the broth was bland and the sliced beef was tough and looked more like pork. The meatballs also had no flavor. My wife commented that normally pho broth has been simmering for a long time in order to develop the traditional layers of great flavors. This tasted as if they threw it together right before we ordered it. The vegetable delight had a great sauce and came with white rice and cooked perfectly. However, the portion of the veggies and rice were small based on the $8 charge. The egg rolls were the best part of the order. Larger than the standard egg roll and taste was above average although the sauce had a fishy flavor. Total cost was $30+ a little high but I am willing to pay for quality. Too bad they did not match their prices. With all that being said, I have not completely written them off. Based on all the 5 star reviews they have received we may have caught them on an off night. What was really off putting was the ambience of the place. And I've never cared about ambience of a restaurant. First of all, be careful with parking. Second of all, the capacity of this place has gotta be around 10 people. There are maybe 4 small- to medium-sized tables. There are signs in this restaurant saying that people need to sit together. Third of all, remember those cylindrical chairs that are kinda short but you would occasionally sit on as a kid? They use those. It's a shame, because the food is decent. But if I'm desperate enough to ever come here again, I'm getting takeout. read more

I get take out here on a regular basis, they recognize my voice and I get "Hi, Mr ...." I love their food, wonderful flavors and plenty of vegetables. They have gotten to the point they know my tastes and customize the seasonings to match them, you can't beat that for service. I have enjoyed everything I have ever tried here as does my girlfriend. The folks that own and run this place are wonderful, I sure consider them an asset to the community and feel most fortunate they are only a few blocks from my home. This place used to be Cali's Express, but has changed ownership. It is now Cadao Express. I saw this place when I was out and about for PennFest, but didn't stop in. I was excited that they had pho on their menu so I had to drag the family in for a visit. The place is TINY - only 2 tables (they can seat a total of 6 people). Luckily, the offer delivery (limited delivery area) and take-out. The boys had the #8 pho (fresh sliced beef & meat balls) and I had the special. The bowls were large - enough to fill me up and satisfy my pho craving. The broth itself was good. I wouldn't say that it's as good as Quang's or Jasmine 26, but it's light years better than the pho at Bona or Lotus. It was a wee bit greasy and the tendon and tripe in my pho didn't taste as fresh as it does when I order from the restaurants on Nicollet. I would recommend sticking with the sliced beef & meat balls. I got plenty of meat with my bowl of pho (I hate it when I get all rice noodles and not enough meat) and there were plenty of condiments (bean sprouts, lime wedges, basil, cilantro, jalapeno) to go with the pho. Most of their menu is the typical Americanized Chinese fare, but they have bun salads and things that make me miss my mom - bun rieu and bun bo hue. Unfortunately, they don't have any banh mi. The service was great. The owners were very friendly and polite. They asked if my 6-year-old wanted onions in his pho, which I appreciated, because the 6-year-old hates onions. Most places don't ask. It's a family-owned business and it was really slow when we were there. If you are in the neighborhood or if you're not in the neighborhood but don't want to trek down to Nicollet, stop by and give them some business. Just be warned that it's not fine dining. This place is a small gem. It has great bun bo hue! So good and authentic. These dishes here are close to home. Plus it's a reasonable price. Been here in summer though, and they do not have AC! So beware. It gets really hot. There is a couple seats outside that they have. The water though there that they serve is tap water or sink water I'm pretty sure. You can see small particles in it, so just look out if you're picky. Otherwise the pho there is really good also! read more

It was our first time in Minnesota and my husband was craving for some pho. So we came to this place. Food was amazing, and service was excellent. We ordered cream cheese wontons, beef pho , chicken fried rice, & orange chicken. Food was delicious!! They did forget the wontons but we were so focused on our entree that we didn't mind, so we had that to go. They even gave my son (3yrs old) a hot wheels car that looks like a Japanese car, which was really cool! We're from Cali so it was surprising that they do that here and also in some Asian restaurants in Illinois. The place is small but it's soo worth sitting down. We came in early as soon as it opens and we saw that they had some people coming in to order take outs or dining in. Seriously a hole in the wall, but their bun rieu (crab noodle soup) was delicious. It had the right amount of tomato and lime flavor, and I know my bun rieu. For those of you who don't know, the crab is mostly crab cream and not crab meat. The chicken rice noodle was also good, but a bit greasy, definitely fried and not grilled. Cadao Express is located in a nondescript commercial development near the intersection of Penn and 66th St. You will have to look carefully to see the sign. The place itself is miniscule with 4 small tables inside and a couple outside. Decor is basic at best as is service. The staff appear to have limited English but they try to please. There is no air conditioning and when I ate there it was stifling inside. The menu is small consisting of a variety of Vietnamese soups, egg and spring rolls and some Vietnamese and Chinese style dishes. That said, the food I had was pretty good. I had the spring rolls and the Bun Bo Hue. The spring rolls were large and fresh; however, the peanut sauce lacked zip. Bun Bo Hue is a spicy noodle soup with chunks of beef with lemon grass flavor. The noodles are thicker and more cylindrical than those in pho. Mine was spicy but not overwhelmingly so and the meat was tasty but had a fair amount of gristle as to be expected. I would rate the Bun Bo Hue equal to what I have had at Quang, my bench mark for Vietnamese soups. All in all I would return but on a cooler day or try their take out. read more

Fab pho fer a good price. There are only 3 to 4 small tables so it's mainly a carry out joint but as hole in the wall places go, this is a great place to get something to eat. It's one of our gotos when we want to eat out but don't want to spend much. The flavor and authenticity is always there and we've never left dissatisfied. read more

Just a quick update. This place is still excellent, and I wanted to add that I *think* I've determined their beef pho and spring rolls are gluten-free. Both are made in-house from scratch. I had a long talk with the owner, and while his English is not perfect I felt like he understood what I was asking and was honest with me--for which he earns an extra star. (For example, he knew to tell me to not add the hoisin that the pho comes with, and to avoid the peanut sauce that comes with the spring rolls.) I eat here maybe once a month (more if I'm sick) and my TTG-IGA bloodwork has been normal. read more

The Pho (Fah) is Pho-fulous!!! Portions are enough to feed an army and don't get me started on the egg rolls and spring rolls. Forget about it! Delicious!
