If you just want to stop by in the middle of the day--or anytime for that matter--and grab a bite to eat and a soda, because your job might frown on you for smelling of alcohol on your return, this is the place to go! They don't talk down to you because you order a non-alcoholic beverage. That means a lot to me. Kris is amazing! I was shocked when she remembered my name after just one prior visit. That has happened to me maybe twice in my entire life. Now I can add her to my list of favorite bar staff in the area! The food is decent but don't expect a Cordon Bleu experience. C'mon! It's a bar-restaurant! People who complain about the food need to go to a haughty Scottsdale way-too-pricey-for-what-you-get restaurant. I personally like the food at Cactus Tavern! This place has become my husband and I's go-to spot because it is within walking distance of our house. The drinks are super cheap and the service is great. The food is amazing. I wings are crazy crispy and sauced perfectly. The shrimp basket is fantastic, battered and fried to perfection plus it comes with homemade shrimp cocktail sauce. My husband swears the French dip is better then Houston's. The onion strings are to die for as well, kind of like a better version of a blooming onion. I'm sober and ordered a soda water. Usually, soda water is free as there is no syrup in it. They charged me $3, so I questioned it. I saw the server ask the manager. We came here with the thought that it would be just like Wrecked at The Reef, it's sister property in Rocky Point. We we wrong! The guacamole came out very dark and ice cold, as if in the fridge & pre-made, as well as flavorless. Ordered a beer that tasted like the keg was old. Our daughter loved her chicken wings, my husbands burger was salty & the grilled cheese was mediocre. I did like my onion strings! We are used to fabulous food in Rocky Point, so this was a disappointment. It's no wonder their health score is 70/100!! The staff was nice, we didn't complain to them, just ate the food and left. The game had started but we still got a great table, with TV's everywhere. Got much busier after noon. Fun crowd, not overly obnoxious. Food was great! I had a couple of Blue Moons (I also had a couple jello shots...at $2 a pop why not?). There wasn't a huge beer selection, but I wouldn't expect there to be at a place like this. After graduation ceremonies for my daughter at Grand Canyon University on the 27th. It was getting late and we were pretty hungry. We decided to stop at Cactus Tavern and finish watching my Cowboys beat the Eagles. The bar area was nothing to look at but they had enough TVS to enjoy the game. My daughter says this is her go to place when she does not want to make herself up and just enjoy a beer. I ordered a LIT and it was prepared just right with a little sweetness in flavor. My wife ordered the Margarita which for her was kind of strong but very good. My daughter had her usual dark beer. We started with chips and salsa and Jalapeno poppers. The jalapeno poppers were oh so hot but cheesy and good, The salsa had a little bite and was very good, just a little strong for the wife and daughter. I ordered a combo of fish and shrimp platter w/fries. The battered fried fish was very good I was pleasantly surprised The battered fried shrimp were very big like a jumbo size and very tasty. After the poppers and chips and salsa my wife was not very hungry so she just had a jumbo shrimp off of my plate. Our daughter ordered a hamburger and fries which she enjoyed very much. The guy running the bar and dining room was very attentive and friendly (something we have not seen a lot of out West!) The place is definitely locals but the environment is quaint and inviting! This is my go to neighborhood bar. When I first came here I was unsure but I've grown to love it. The bartenders are always friendly and tentative. The Tito and sodas are only $5 bucks and strong. But what surprised me most is their food! Their burgers and fries are the best in the area. I've been told the fish and chips are good. Their wings are nice and crispy and everything is reasonably priced. It is definitely bar food but very tasty and well prepared bar food!
