All…read moreI can say is good luck finding it because they literally have no sign on the front of the store. If you're searching, it is located near Hotel Ala. There's a small bridge on the side of the hotel. Take the bridge and walk down the road. If you reach another square, you've gone too far. We bought two slices and headed back to our hotel for the evening. The slices are good. They are reasonably priced. They also sell pizza by the pie. Not bad if you're looking to have a romantic evening inside or just to get away from the crowds.

After much studying, debating, and staring at menus, it was finally time to order. I went with the Tagliatelle alla Bolognese, and the wife and I shared a salad. When that salad hit the table, it nearly stole the entire show. We drizzled on a little balsamic vinaigrette, added a shake of salt and pepper, and suddenly we were ready to dance right there in the alley. Fresh tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, crisp greens--every ingredient tasted like it had been picked that morning. It was outstanding. The pasta was very good, but today the salad was the undisputed champion of the meal. Of course, dining outside along Venice's busy walkways only adds to the experience. Watching people pass by while enjoying great food is one of those simple pleasures that makes Venice such a special place. Rossopomodoro delivered a fantastic meal and a great evening. The newcomers survived their first full day in Italy, and I'd say they're off to a pretty good start.

Both of those places certainly get their share of tourists but one look at the menu at Birraria La Corte, one of the spots he recommended, made clear that this was quite an elevated offering. Here, the pasta is homemade and the menu descriptions read like poetry. To wit, our orders: * Mezze maniche with nettle pesto, goat cheese "Gran Cao" & cardamom (20€); and * Homemade ravioli stuffed with lamb, fresh peas, yogurt and chive (22€) Both dishes were fresh, creative, and made with care but about nettle pesto I'll admit I've no desire to sample it again. The ravioli, shared a similar consensus. Both dishes were listed as "first courses" and would benefit from being shared and accompanied by, say, the glazed short ribs listed as a "second course". Birraria La Corte accepts reservations and those who fail to secure them will likely be seated in the stone-enclosed patio, open to the sky. It was from this location that I watched many diners settle into their pizza orders, as elevated an offering as the pastas. I think the optimal experience here would be to come with a group and advance reservations, and sample widely from the menu offerings. As a party of two we were unable to fulfill that mission, but if you're in Venice and looking for a menu that feels creative and different than most every place else, Birraria La Corte is a good choice.
