Over all this was an enjoyable restaurant to try. Tucked away in a small alley it can be difficult to find. The restaurant is fairly small, has about 10 tables, and has a nautical theme. They specialize in seafood but also have meat items on the menu. The server recommended the tagliatelle with seafood, so I went with that. Seafood tasted fresh, and tagliatelle was good. The sauce could have been elevated with the addition of some garlic, lemon juice, or herbs - it was a bit flat to me, and for that reason I didn't give 5 stars. Food was nicely presented. Service was very good (though odd that there are 5 waiters for such a small restaurant). Bread was placed on the table and charged. Prices were fair. There were 8 of us who went to Taverna Scalinetto - Ristorante. A few of us ordered seared scallops as appetiser. They came with significant inconsistency in portion. Some had six big complete scallops while mine was 3 smaller whole ones and two incomplete ones. I 'complained' to the waiting staff, who informed us that the chef found it normal and there was nothing wrong about it. Since I already talked to two waiters and they confirmed it's their service and standard, I gave up. The seared scallops turned out to be overcooked and chewed like tough rubber. They probably don't know what 'seared' means and do seafood either raw or overcook it. I still finished them. The seafood pasta I had for my main was also overcooked. The clams and mussels and the sauce were bland. Yet I still finished them, like all the bad food I've had at home or at restaurants as long as it is edible. I didn't want to spoil the mood of my friends and chose to quietly write a review on Google after appetiser, mainly about the inconsistent quality control and also the scallops being overcooked and rubbery. The owner read it immediately and wrote a response. The manager came to our table and said, 'we need to talk!' He didn't come back and I forgot about it. However, when we had paid and were leaving, he stopped me at the front counter and insisted that he needed to tell me something. He then told me off for writing a review even before I ate my scallops, and me finishing them was evidence that I actually liked the taste. He even told me I should 't have finished the dish if I didn't like it. It was wrong of me to do. He raised his voice at me. I saw no point in arguing and left as he was still shouting out of the restaurant. The chef then came out of the alley and shouted at us as we were walking away. The owner then wrote a long email to me at midnight and we had had a few email exchanges. She basically said writing a review about the portion was ridiculous. And I shouldn't have finished it, and we shouldn't have continued the dinner, finished the food and ordered wine and desserts. She mentioned the server had 15 years of experience and the chef had 25 years. All restaurants in Venice were busy. They are a family-run restaurant and do not have a measuring tape to measure the size of the scallops. Then she said my payment transaction was reversed and suggested that I did something, and mentioned contacting the authorities. I checked with my bank and the payment was confirmed. Before we went, I hadn't checked the reviews on Google but I was curious after our dinner whether anyone else had a similar experience. Of course there are. And the owner did respond to many of the bad reviews, basically telling the reviewers they were stupid, ignorant, or not qualified to review on Venetian food. She also accused them of writing a review only to extort something from the restaurant, and that hey were not the customers they wanted anyway. I have a feeling that the restaurant has a long history. There are more than 2,000 reviews on Google but quite a few from the recent year were 1-to-3-star. The immaturity, biased judgment and impatient personality of the female owner, probably a young girl who has inherited the family business and is clueless about the effort it took to build up over the many years. read more

This place serves up authentic Venetian dishes. So if you want to try out pasta made with cuttlefish ink or lobster pasta, then come here. I was in Venice recently and ate here twice. The food is fantastic and because it's a bit further away from San Marco and the tourist madness there and is in the Castello district, the food is more authentic and has not been modified for American and Chinese palates, plus the vibe is much less frantic that in other heavily touristy areas in Venice, which let's face it, practically the entire city has been taken over by. I had the cuttle-fish ink pasta (added with Portabello mushrooms), bruschetta and the panna cotta, all of it was fantastic. A word of advice when eating in Italy, stay the hell away from restaurants that has a special "Tourist menu" posted outside or has a guy outside trying to attract you to come in. Also anything in the immediate vicinity of major tourist sites, the food is automatically garbage. Go further afield in to less-frequented areas and you'll be rewarded with more authentic, better-tasting food. read more

Came here with some trepidation because it's right off the main tourist area but what a good find! Highly recommend! We ordered fish of the day and black ravioli with sea bass filling. (See photos). Fish of the day came with veggies and small salad - fish was cooked perfectly and overall very clean eating that was executed to perfection. Great for anyone with dietary restrictions such as SIBO, just ask them to leave the garlic off. The black ravioli was a house specialty; didn't have black ink sauce but instead the ravioli dough had the ink mixed in to create the color and subtle flavor. This restaurant is fantastic! We are staying in a hotel nearby and were looking for a place to have a nice meal on our first night in Venice. My nana ordered the seafood risotto and it was amazing, it even made her change her favorite pasta to risotto! My tata ordered lasagna and it was very good but a slightly bigger portion than he was expecting. My Tagliatelle de bolognese (with added parmesan on top) was spectacular and I highly recommend to anyone worried about ordering a dish from a new restaurant. This is a fantastic spot for Italian food especially seafood. The appetizer platter has a wide selection. The lobster pasta and the fried calamari was delicious. The tiramisu, a bit pricey at 6 euro, is good as well. The restaurant has a 2 euro per person service charge. The wine is expensive at 25 euro per bottle from Italian standards. Tired and lost in Venice, we wandered in, looking for a refuge to replenish. Rather than face a menu,I asked the hostess what they were known for. She said this morning she picked some beautiful flounder and sea bass, and it would be a nice second to follow the house made ravioli. While the dishes were prepared my family shared fresh baked bread with oil and cheese and a nice salad. She swapped the house wine for a local white that gave us more venice flavor. The salmon ravioli and spinach ricotta burst with color and were perfect al dente. The fish arrived, a simple baked fish with olive and tomato sauce and perfectly flavored potatoes, She prepared four wonderful plates, and my wife declared it our best dinner in Italy. We skipped dessert as we still had a few hours to wander. High recommend this small escape from the summer crowds. read more

If I can give 0 stars I would. We came here because of all the good ratings. So we were very excited to get there and try out the food. It was 3 of us at first because our two family members weren't in the area yet. They sat us down and everything was ok. Adding to the fact we felt uncomfortable after that and my 2 cousins decided to just leave to avoid a situation. Keep reading it gets better... We noticed after that, that our service declined. Upon receiving our appetizer and drinks in a timely fashion all of a sudden our dinner took a long time. Two other tables who came after us got served first. At that point, along with feeling uncomfortable the entire time there because of the rude comment we chose to leave. They gave us a hard time complaining what they are going to do with the food. Not our problem for the bad service. All of a sudden the food was ready. I had told them I would pay, we just wanted to leave. Then the waiter had the nerve to say we have bad education. Instead of thinking about the customer she chose to defend her immature coworker who by the way was standing there quiet with his head down the entire time. Didnt say a single word. We have been to many countries, if there's one language that's universal is good manners. He could have simply and easily said "excuse me miss and mister but we don't allow that here but if you'd like we can set you up at another table." But no he chose the words "this isn't a bar." Randomly saying it. Upon paying and walking out the young waiter immaturely and FINALLY spoke up saying like a little 10 year old behind his mother "ciao ciao" while waving his hand. So due to this service I would not recommend them. There's other restaurants in Venice with better customer service who actually care about their customers.
