I ordered the 8 pcs Byrds Chicken bites with fries and my husband got the 5 pcs fingers with fries and a drink. The chicken was well cook. It was very crunchy yet the meat remained a bit juicy. The 24k sauce was my husband favorite but I found it spicy for my taste. I requested ranch sauce instead. I also asked if I could try the cheese sauce for my fries. This is a challenging review to write. This Byrd's feels like an anomaly and a departure from the typical franchise operation. I say this, because the ambience in the space is cold and feels more like a mom-and-pop shop than a national franchise. The counter with the utensils and drinks was an absolute mess and didn't look like it had been cleaned in days. The laminated menus at the register looked like they were printed at the local FedEx and the kitchen was shielded from the dining room using cardboard. Aside from this, the service (at the counter) was great. The person gave us samples of the different sauces, stating that he would usually have to charge us, but was willing to let us try. Our food was hot and tasted fresh. I had the Byrd Bomb and my wife got tenders with the Byrd's Nest (green beans). So if I had to rate this place as a mom-and-pop restaurant, I'd go with 3.5/4 stars for the food and service. But I am rating this place as a franchise, which should be at a higher level of cleanliness, presentation, and ambience... so 3 stars. Also, due to the prices, I'm not sure we'd go back. read more

My husband really likes Byrd's, it's always been mid for me. I've never had service with a smile or anything more than a grunt. We've all read about the supposed "chicken wars" between the major fast-food chains. There's a new entrant, and without a doubt, they are the sure winner! Byrd's Hot Chicken, a mini-chain with locations in SoCal and Chicago, does one thing and does it well, chicken sandwiches, in your choice of heat level, ranging from none to so super it will make you sweat say some. The sandwiches are very crispy fried tenders on a nicely toasted bun, topped with pickles and slaw, and is that garlic aioli? (Tenders can also be ordered bunless or in a bowl-type meal. I tried two variations of the sandwich, no-spice, and medium, and the heat on the spice version does come with each bite, but more than that, it stays with you, pleasantly. It's the chicken itself that has the spice, it's not just in a spread like the one big chain. Crinkle-cut fries were my choice of side along with the ultra-creamy slaw. The fries, like the chicken, were perfectly cooked and nicely seasoned. A ramekin of slightly spicy dipping sauce is included. Such a nice chain from the ubiquitous ranch most places insist on serving. Coca-cola products on tap, including Dole Lemonade, which was a nice complement to the spice. I was struck by the immaculateness of the restaurant, and the meticulous nature of prep and packaging as I watched the extremely cheerful and polite employees serve us. Byrd's Hot Chicken has quickly become my family's favorite spot to get a spicy chicken sandwich. The chicken itself is perfectly crispy even after sitting in a car for 30 minutes. Their spices definitely pack a punch. I personally have to get the mild because the spice level is too much otherwise. The slaw on top helps cool down some of the spice though. My favorite part of this sandwich is the spicy sauce. They give you some on the sandwich as well as extra on the side to dip your sandwich or fries into. I have tried their other location in Schaumburg, but for some reason, I think the quality of the sandwich is better at this location. A new chicken place where the previous chicken place was. This one is Nashville Hot chicken. Enter through the revolving doors and walk up to the counter. There are large tv-like screens for the menu and also laminated menus on the counter where you place your order. Easy to order as there are only three items plus a kids menu. Chicken is ordered to your heat level: mild, medium, or hot. Their mild still has a little heat. Came with a friend who ordered a sandwich. She gave me a bite of the chicken. So juicy, tender and full of flavor. Not as sweet as I'm used to at other Nashville Hot chicken restaurants, but still very delicious. Since I didn't have my glasses I grabbed a paper menu and approached the counter. I was greeted by the cashier who helped us place our order. The chicken is made fresh and the dry rub seasoning appears to be in the batter and sprinkled on top of the chicken. I'd caution the restaurant to be careful of how much rub is placed on the chicken. There were moments where the taste god weird. We ordered the Byrd's nest, a two-piece chicken tender meal, and an order of kid's chicken nuggets. Our total came to a whopping $40! Whew! I wasn't expecting that. I took off a star based on the price. Maybe the price is high to cover the store rent in the commons. IDK. The gentleman brought our food to the table and I was impressed. The presentation was great and the portions were huge. The chicken was hot and tender and the sauce...oh the sauce...was delish! It's a garlic aioli and ketchup blend. The kids and I stopped by while we were in the area visiting family. I ordered a kid's chicken tender meal for each of them ($14 total), and a #2/chicken tenders meal ($13 total) for my relative. There must have been a mistake, because we only got drink cups for 2/3 of the meals. I didn't want the kids drinking caffeinated beverages, really, otherwise I might have asked about being short a drink cup. The tenders were good, the fries were plentiful, but they were on the soggier/floppier side. We all love fries, but none of us really enjoyed Byrd's fries. I was out fishing with my son and we had ended our fishing session. I asked him what he wanted to eat and he yelled out "chicken!" So begins my quest to find us chicken. Our standard go to chicken spot is Popeyes Chicken and I most certainly did not want that again. After a quick search for chicken on Yelp, Byrds Hot Chicken came out victorious and we made our maiden voyage towards this chicken joint. We arrived and this establishment is inside the Algonquin Commons. I walk through the revolving door with my son and the place is dead. There's one table with no music going on in the background and I could hear them crunching down on their chicken...weird. Regardless, I walked up to the front and scanned the menu. All I saw was #1 and $13.99! $13.99 for a chicken sandwich meal? YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME RIGHT?!? My son wanted nuggets and it was $6.99 for the meal! Man, are they growing their own chickens back there? Why was this so absurdly expensive? I digress and give in as I was already there. This better be some damn good Hot Chicken! The guy who rang me up said my total was $23 and some change. I reluctantly swiped my credit card and I couldn't get over spending $23 for a chicken sandwich and some nuggets. The guy gave me one cup and I said aren't you going to give me a cup for my son? He said "oh he's not supposed to get a drink but I'll give it to you anyways." WTF, it clearly says on your menu that my son's nugget meal comes with a small drink. Thanks but no thanks since I already paid for it... I placed my order to go and the gentlemen gave my son a crayon and a kids book to do some coloring for Easter. He had a stack of these and he was trying to just give away. Whatever, it gave my son something to do to pass the time. We waited about 10 mins for our food to be ready. And if I haven't already said we went with the #1 medium spice level and the kids nuggets meal. I get my food and it's nicely packaged and I make the 12 minute drive home. Once I arrive home I open up my sons food and it's like 8 nuggets over a bed of fries and some mysterious white sauce. The sauce wasn't ranch and till this day I have no idea what this white mystery sauce was. My son seemed to like the nuggets and it's really hard to mess up kids chicken nuggets. I open up my to go container and I'm greeted with the heaping pile of chicken that's between two slices of bread. I'm thinking at least I kinda get my monies worth. I first try the fries and it's sprinkled with some kind of cajun seasoning and has a nice kick. Then I tried the potato salad and that was actually really good. So far so good. Next was the main event, the Hot Chicken Sandwich, but it wasn't hot because I got medium. I asked the guy, "how hot is hot?" He said it's HOT. Ok that's why I went with medium. The chicken piece was so big that I actually had to cut it down to size. I took my first bite and boy that chicken was crispy, crunchy, good chicken. The medium sauce was perfect for me. It def had a kick and I would agree that hot would have been too spicy for me. I was pleased and happy about my lunch time decision. No longer was I mad, upset, regretting spending $23 plus change for our lunch. I had my wife try the fries, potato salad, and sandwich also and she agreed that everything was really good. The meal came with thier signature 24 kart sauce and that was delicious as well. Now after eating at Byrd's Hot Chicken I can calmly say that you're getting a gourmet chicken sandwich. The chicken is freshly made with quality meat and seasoned beautifully. The fries are decent and the potato salad is good. I'd give Byrd's Hot Chicken another go but next time I wanna try their Byrd Bomb for $14.99. Bryd's is good but I see this place as a maybe once every three to six months kind of deal. If I try to eat here once a week I'd be fat in the belly and slimmer in my wallet. I want it to be the other way around. I was stoked when I heard about another halal fried chicken spot. I don't live near either Illinois location, but we decided to make the trek on the way back home from Wisconsin. We were with a large group and found a table suitable for us. The interior of the Algonquin location is pretty spacious and trendy, but I found the music to be too loud. For me, my wife, and son, we ordered a Byrd Bomb (medium heat), a single sandwich (medium heat), and a single tender (mild heat). Even though each dish was different, there was something in common -- too much breading. I really liked the mouthwatering concept of the Byrd Bomb -- fried chicken on a bed of cheesy fries -- but there were too many fries and not enough chicken (although the cheesy fries were rather tasty). There was also toast on the bottom, but I don't really care about toast. Dave's Hot Chicken and Chi-Tea both use thick, juicy chicken breasts and an adequate amount of breading, whereas Byrd's chicken was mostly breading. If there was more chicken meat, all dishes would have been good and the price would have been just right. The medium seasoning, by the way, was not very spicy, so get hot if you want some spice. read more

Byrd has only been open for about a week at this point and they definitely had a few hiccups that you'd expect from a newly opened business. Most everything was just a systems management issue and can easily be fixed. My wife and I both got the two tender basket. She swapped out the potato salad for the Mac and cheese and we both got them medium. Once the order was clarified it went smoothly and we had our food within ten minutes. I would say that the medium level of heat is pretty darn hot and comparable to some of the hottest levels of sauce and rub at a BWW. The tenders were perfectly moist and coated in the fried breading! Fries were crisp and well spiced. I'm jealous as my wife's Mac and cheese was fantastic! Highly recommend! We will definitely be going back in a month to see how everything has been smoothed out. In any case, this place, while also specializing in finely spiced poultry, is much more focused on crispy fried chicken. Like, three entrees on the menu focused (though maybe this is just as they start). It was kinda slow, and their ticket system went down while I waited, but again, it's new. This was probably the best fried chicken I've had. Super crispy and flavorful and the sauce was devine. The bread they give was fluffy yet crunchy on the edges with a nice buttery taste. The potato salad was probably one of the best potato salads I've ever had and my sister agrees. The owner seemed very involved in the business and his service was attentive and professional. The drinks are self served from a fountain and it's nice because you can order and pay and then sit down and pick a seat! Great chicken! Super moist, large portions and super delicious! There are different levels of heat that are available, so children can enjoy the chicken as well. The restaurant was clean and provides a sink for washing hands out in the open so that we don't have to go into the (all gender) washroom, which is a great idea and big plus in my book. The service was friendly as well. Just a couple of things that need improvement: 1) the slaw wasn't good, which is a shame since it comes **on** the chicken sandwich and is also one of pre-selected sides on all meals; and 2) the side of cheese (for the fries) was kind of sweet due to the spices mixed into it. This is a new casual fried chicken restaurant where Port of Peri Peri used to be. They updated the inside with more colors and a modern vibe. Their new menu is small. Prices are a bit high for the food you get. We ordered two of the #2 Tenders with 2 sides (Supahot and No spice), Byrd's nest (crispy green beans), and Byrd bomb and a drink for a total of about $50. We also got the Byrd bomb which was the best of what we ordered because the mixture of the chicken tender, slaw, sauce and pickles with fries and toast is a nice combo. Their potato salad is also refreshing, especially to balance their spicy powder and if you get a spicier level of chicken. The chicken tender itself isn't too flavorful without their 24k sauce. We also got the Byrd's Nest to try their crispy green beans which was fine but didn't like enough to order again. All in all our favorites were the potato salad, fries and Byrd Bomb. Personally we miss the Port of Peri Peri food options especially their wings and cassava fries. It's a good place to go if you're craving fried chicken tenders but we probably won't be visiting too often. read more

Great chicken, LOUSY service This is frustrating. I love the chicken, but won't continue to go here because of REPEATED, TERRIBLE service. I hate giving up on it but enough is enough. On my second visit, I signed up for their "rewards" program (spend $X amount and Byrd's gives you $X reward to use in the store). On the third, fourth, fifth visits they said the rewards system was "down temporarily." No option for me to save my receipts or use the program - just that it was "down." On the sixth visit, again, system was "down" (and by this time, I had spent well over the amount to earn rewards a few times over but, of course, received nothing). My meal was prepared incorrectly - I ordered mild and got medium (significantly hotter) and when I went back to the counter, no one was there. I called out and finally someone came out who simply smiled and said "Yes, medium." Obviously totally didn't get that I had food was prepared incorrectly. When we were leaving, my husband wanted to get a food container and bag so he went to the counter, where, once again, noone was there so he also called out and no one came. He went behind the counter and got food container and bag himself. No employee ever even knew. I know service doesn't impact the taste of the food, but this was ridiculous. The service has been abysmal every time but not as bad as this final time. As I said before, enough is enough. read more

I am writing a mixed review from when we visited last month. I came with my 6 yr old to eat inside. It was SO cold we even saw someone walk out. Lucky enough we found a spot by the space heater so we stayed inside. The food was good and the cashier was super nice. There is a TV playing and between the content shown on the TV and the music choices I dashed out as it wasn't age appropriate and I didn't want her to ask about a few new word choices learned from the songs either.
